Philip Simon is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. From 2010 to 2017, Simon served as chief judge of the district court.

Early life and education

A native of Pittsburgh, Simon graduated from the University of Iowa-Iowa City with his bachelor's degree in 1984 and graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 1987.

Professional career

After finishing law school in 1987, Simon entered into private practice in Chicago. From 1990 to 2003, Simon served as a US Attorney in three different capacities, first, from 1990 to 1997 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, then from 1997 to 1999 as an Assistant US Attorney for the District of Arizona. In 1999, he returned to the Northern District of Indiana to be the Chief of the Criminal Division handling criminal cases. He served in this position until his nomination to the Federal bench in 2003.

From 1996 to 1997 and then from 1999 to 2000, Simon served as an adjunct professor of law at the Valparaiso University School of Law.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Indiana

On the recommendation of Senator Dick Lugar, Simon was nominated by President George W. Bush on January 29, 2003 to a seat vacated by William Lee as Lee assumed senior status. Simon was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 27, 2003 on a full senate vote and received commission on March 27, 2003.[1]
