John Jarvey
John Jarvey was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He joined the court in 2007 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). Jarvey served as chief judge from 2015 until his retirement on March 18, 2022.[1]
Early life and education
Jarvey graduated from the University of Akron with a B.S. degree in 1978 and then from Drake University School of Law with his J.D. in 1981.[1]
Professional career
Jarvey started his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Donald O'Brien in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa from 1981 to 1983. From 1983 until his appointed to the federal bench in 1987, Jarvey was the trial attorney in the Criminal Division for the U.S. Department of Justice.[1]
Judicial career
Southern District of Iowa
Jarvey started his federal judicial career as a federal magistrate judge for the Southern District of Iowa, being first appointed to a full eight-year term in 1987. He was re-appointed in 1995 and 2003 before being nominated to an Article III judgeship in 2007. On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, Jarvey was nominated by President George W. Bush (R) on January 9, 2007, to a seat vacated by Ronald Longstaff. Jarvey was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 8, 2007, on a unopposed 95-0-5 vote and received commission on March 14, 2007. He served as chief judge from 2015 to 2022 and he retired from the court on March 18, 2022.[1]
