Liam O'Grady is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 2007 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). O'Grady assumed senior status on May 1, 2020.

O'Grady was a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on August 21, 2020 and retired on July 5, 2023.[1]

Born in Newark, New Jersey, O'Grady graduated from Franklin & Marshall College with his bachelor's degree in 1973 and from George Mason University School of Law with his J.D. in 1977.[2]

O'Grady was first nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President George W. Bush (R) on August 2, 2006, to a seat vacated by Claude Hilton. Under Rule XXXI, paragraph six of the standing rules of the Senate, O'Grady's nomination was returned to the president on December 9, 2006. President Bush resubmitted O'Grady's nomination on January 9, 2007.

The American Bar Association unanimously rated O'Grady well qualified for the nomination. Hearings on O'Grady's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 10, 2007, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on May 24, 2007.

O'Grady was confirmed on a recorded 88-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on July 9, 2007, and he received his commission on July 11, 2007. He assumed senior status on May 1, 2020.[2][4][5][6]
