Candidate Connection

Arden Andersen participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on July 30, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Arden Andersen's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Healthcare, esp. Medicaid overhaul and expansion reducing cost per person and extend to 380,000 uninsured Kansans
Education revitalization beginning with more money to the classroom to cover teachers, classroom supplies and paraprofessionals
Human rights reform elevating the LGBTQ discussion to the medical and constitutional platform it deserves - developmental embryology proves that people can be born with a male body and a female brain and vice versa esp. considering all the endocrine disruptors in the environment today; further Article 1, Sec. 10 of the US Constitution says that everyone has the right of contract and every interaction a person has with the state, including a marriage license, is a contract.[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Healthcare as I am a family and occupational medicine physician working in the system which has continued to get worse, more cumbersome and less patient/doctor friendly over the 21 years I have practiced. I already mentioned education and human rights above. Another issue is agricultural independence from the Feds and real sustainability. I have taught sustainable farming principles for over 30 years. As Governor I will bring that technology to Kansas farmers to improve farm productivity, increase soil humus and thus water holding capacity and thus reduce water demand and improve drought tolerance; improve diversity in crops to include hemp, marijuana, sweet sorghum and organics that yield more than conventional and pay significantly more to the farmer and are not subject to the standard tariffs. We can make Kansas carbon neutral in 5 years with this appropriate technology. The other area in which I am passionate is developmental delay. 26% of school aged children are now classified as DD. Autism is on the severe end of DD and is increasing at an exponential rate. It is perhaps the single most threatening even in our society as it threatened our future work force and cost society 2-10 times the educational expenses as mainstream children and subsequent public expenses in caring for these people as adults. No one is wanting to discuss this imposing issue let alone address the possible causes and go after reversing this devastating trend. We know the causes lie with mercury, aluminum, pesticides and industrial chemicals. Democrat or Republican, Independent or Libertarian, Autism/Developmental Delay strikes all equally. We can reverse this trend and must for the future of our society.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Arden Andersen answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy as these men challenged the system, weren't afraid to make mistakes and still pursued helping America especially regarding human rights.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Oliver Stone's: The Untold History of the United States[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Competence in the major issues of our times, e.g. healthcare, education, environment, infrastructure, leadership.[4]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
As a family physician, occupational medicine physician, Colonel and flight surgeon in the USAF Reserves, former vo-ag teacher, sustainable agriculture teacher/consultant/author I possess the experience and competence in the key issues of our time: healthcare, education, environment/sustainable food production and leadership.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Public service. We elect people to represent us, the people and to run the government which is supposed to be to serve the people. Elected officials should have life experience is the real world as doctors, engineers, teachers, farmers, etc. so that experience is transferred to the public office. Career politicians fail in this category as evidenced by their ridiculous legislative activity and the appalling effectiveness of governmental programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, VA, USDA, etc.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
Revitalizing of healthcare to include affordable healthcare for all Kansans in a model for the rest of the country to replicate similar, not the same as, Australia where there is both a government and private healthcare system spending only about $4300 per person compared to $10,000 to $11,000 per person in the US. Reversing the trend in DD/Autism. Independence of Kansas farming in an environmentally revitalizing and sustainable model for the rest of the country to replicate. This would include real water conservation and carbon sequestration making Kansas carbon neutral w/I 5 years.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The assignation of JFK, I was age 5.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Worked on my father's dairy farm through HS and then summers through college milking cows, feeding animals, baling hay, etc.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas. I love the decorations and especially my wife decorates the entire house with 3 different trees and themes. I love to give gifts and watch people smile when they see what they have received. I enjoy remembering what Christmas is really all about, the gift of Christ.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Love, Medicine and Miracle by Bernie Segal, MD; This is my number one book I recommend to my very ill patients as it gives them hope and tells them how to take charge of their healthcare. My second favorite is Proof of Heaven by Eban Alexander, MD as it provides people hope and calms their fears.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Captain America[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Our back deck because it is so peaceful viewing all the plants, flowers, birds, etc. It is a common place we sit and talk and meet with friends and family.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Perfect by Ed Sheeran[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Back pain and post concussion syndrome.[4]
Governors have many responsibilities, which vary from state to state. Which of those do you personally consider the most important in your state?
Mutual working agreement is best. there will be differences in opinions but if we stick to outcomes and mission then we can come to mutually agreeable solutions.[4]
Different states require governors to have different degrees of responsibility for the state budgeting process. If it were your choice, what do you believe is the appropriate degree of gubernatorial involvement with this process in your state?
Human rights, healthcare solutions, an adequately trained workforce which means we must address that to out education plan. Perhaps the greatest is the continued increase in developmentally delayed children, esp. the continued rising autism rate. It my be resolved and reversed.[4]
In most states, governors have the power to make line-item vetoes. If that is true in your state, what would be your philosophy for how and when to use this power?
I believe that the governor should have significant involvement[4]
If the governor's office in your state does not have the line-item veto power, do you believe it should? Why or why not?
Setting out the State Budget as it sets the tone for what is important to people and public service. Also the governor is the leader of the state and has the opportunity to be a teacher, an advocate for people, causes and technology that advances the citizens of the state. As governor I will lead the way in teaching about sustainable farming, new technologies for renewable energy, holistic medicine and healthcare reform.[4]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?
It would be part of the negotiation with the legislature to work out win-win solutions. Each side will have to compromise here and there to get the business of the people done.[4]
What do you love most about your state?
The diversity of our state is people, topography and opportunities.[4]

Ballotpedia biographical submission form

The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:

What is your political philosophy?

I believe the Constitution of the US is the foundation of our laws and our country and is as applicable today as when out founding fathers put in place. I believe that the amendments to the constitution were well thought out and need to be respected and honored today. In this theme, I will champion human rights starting with the elevation of LBGTQ issue to the medical and constitutional platform it deserves just as does any other group born as they are from Down's to Marfan's, from Thalidamide to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome of no fault of their own. I will lead the way to overhauling Medicaid starting with deprivatization, revamping drugs pricing and the contracting of radiology and laboratory services with the target of cutting the cost of Medicaid in half, the goal is $4300 per person equivalent to what Australia spends on healthcare. I will put in my budget proposal the amount of money needed, per teacher recommendations, for classroom supplies and paraprofessional staffing in public school classrooms. I will lead the way in teaching farmer about holistic sustainable farming practices that actually increase farm production, reduce environmental impact, reduce water use, increase farm profit, increase food quality/nutrient density and Kansas farm independence. I will lead the way to negotiating peace between the State of Kansas and the Indian tribes of the State. I will lead the way to setting a new culture in State government regarding treatment of workers, human rights, work ethic, oversight of state funds and the contracting of infrastructure contractors.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I am a scientist, family and occupational medicine doctor, Air Force Reserve Colonel, farmer and a former high school teacher. I deal with Medicaid daily; I teach sustainable farming. As an Air Force Colonel, I council young people in careers and life's challenges. I make life and death decisions daily in my practice so I actually know, first hand, the issues about which I speak. Because of these multiple professions, I bring hands-on solutions to Help Heal Kansas.[4]
