The paper aims to trace, through a selection of texts, the evolution of the norms of the Homeric ethical code that come into play in lines 438-451 of Aristophanes' "Wealth" (of which only the tragic nuances have been identified so far), in order to shed better light on how Aristophanes constructed the scene. In particular, I focus my attention on the social sanction that befalls the man incapable of adhering to this behavioral code: the "deminutio" of his virility, manifested in the equalization or assimilation to a woman.

Pol. I 1253b–1260b 24 e sulla menzione aristotelica del personaggio di Menelao dell’Oreste di Euripide come παράδειγμα πονηρίας ἤθους μὴ ἀναγκαίας (Po. 1454a 28–29).

A well-known tradition has it that after the victory of the Greeks over the Persian army at the battle of Marathon (490 B.C.E.) one of the Athenians ran forty kilometres from Marathon to Athens and died soon after his arrival in the city, after giving the good news. However, the story is more complicated than it seems, and several issues have claimed the attention of scholars, such as what the Marathon runner's name was, what form of greeting he used and whether the episode really happened or not. The first part of my paper offers a reconsideration of the extant sources in order to express my point of view on the abovementioned issues. The second part aims at showing a selection of parallel passages which could possibly prove useful in trying to illustrate how the legend of the Marathon runner evolved into the shape it assumed in the Lucianean account, which is still considered as the 'official' version of the story.

This paper aims to shed light on the interaction between the comic text of Aristophanes’ 'Birds' and the underlying juridical situation. The analysis of lines 1642–1670 shows how the poet managed to obtain certain comic effects by framing Solon’s law regarding the inheritance rights of illegitimate children and Pericles’ law of citizenship within the fantastic city of Nubicuculia. Lines 30–38 and 761–779 are adduced as vivid evidence for the discontent of the Athenian citizens concerning the illegal introduction of ‘false citizens’ into the civic body at the time of the Peloponnesian War.

This contribution aims at analysing as far as possible the critical tradition as regards the language of the female characters of the Euripidean tragedies which is rooted in the critique of their λαλιά and φιλοσοφεῖν in the comedies of Aristophanes (e.g. in Ranae, Lysistrata and Thesmophoriazusae). In the fourth century BCE Plato recalls the Aristophanean moralistic attacks on the Euripidean women and their language in R. 3.395d 5-e 3, while Aristoteles, in Po. 1454a 16-36, seems more interested in the artistic aspect, criticizing the lack of τὸ ἀναγκαῖον and τὸ εἰκός in the rational and highly philosophic rhesis pronounced by Melanippe in the Melanippe sophe, considered as being not ἁρμόττον with a female character. Important exponents of the Second Sophistic, such as Plutarchus and Aelius Aristides, and others from the Imperial Age, like Origenes, keep the Aristophanean critique of the language of the Euripidean ‘women’ alive in a more or less filtered form according to the Platonic or the Aristotelian point of view. Moreover, it is also well attested in the scholia, from the scholia vetera to those written by Tzetzes, who seems particularly annoyed by the inappropriate language of the Euripidean female characters (e.g. in the schol. ad v. 949 Koster of Ranae). In this section of the paper fr. 638 Kn., frequently attributed to the Euripidean tragedy Poliido, is also analysed. The present survey thus demonstrates not only the rarity of positive critiques – such as, for example, the one by the so-called defensor Euripidis or that appearing in Oratio 14. In mortem Annae caesarissae by the Byzantine author Georgius Tornices –, but, above all, that the critical strand rooted in the comedies of Aristophanes, and which labelled the language of the Euripidean female character as ‘inadequate’ and ‘inopportune’, seems to maintain a strong vitality until at least the Late Antiquity.

Archaic Greek thought on language conceives the ‘word/object’ relation as responding to a sort of one-to-one principle of correspondence, which presupposes an ontological link between a name and denoted object. In this phase asymmetry (i.e. polysemy, homonymy, synonymy, etc.) is conceived as an exception to the regular correspondence between language and reality and is often justified by means of paretymology. The pre-Socratic reflection on language gradually leads to a new conception of the ‘word/object’ relation as a merely conventional one and of asymmetry as part of the convention itself.
The present article analyses some passages from Aristophanes’ comedies in an attempt to shed light on how he took part in the new pre-Socratic conception of language. Ec. 256-257 is compared with fr. 68 B 26 DK by Democritus; Ec. 547-550 could be a case of denotatio in absentia; polysemy in Av. 1286-1289 is similar to that of fr. 79 Kahn by Heraclitus; Ran. 683-684 is comparable with fr. 116 Kahn; ll. 1226-1272 of the so-called ‘battle of prologues’ in Ranae could reveal some details on the analysis of synonyms from Prodicus.
The second aim of the present contribution is to demonstrate that the several common points between the Aristophanic passages considered here and their philosophical models reveal processes of circulation of written texts. This consideration leads to a detailed re-examination of all the traces of the circulation of theatrical texts amongst a chosen circle of intellectuals. In fact, several noteworthy pieces of evidence prove that at the end of the fifth century the circulation of βιβλία in Athens was increasing, which could also better explain the allusion to βιβλίον in Aristoph. Ran. 1114.

This contribution aims at showing that the several common points between lines 255-305 of Euripides’ Helen and Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen demonstrate the close link between the two. The analysis of the two texts makes it possible to argue that the Euripidean lines were modelled in the Encomium, which, thus, allows several thorny issues to be solved, such as the authenticity of lines 257-259, Euripides’ choice of Leda as Helen’s mother and the meaning of agalma in line 262.

Many scholars have interpreted Eur. Hel. 286 as an expression of the antithesis between reality and appearance. However Hermann thought that it expresses an opposition between suffering and voluntary action (Helen perhaps claims to be heartbroken for her suffering - τοῖς πράγμασιν -, but not for her action - τοῖς ἔργοισιν). This exegesis has been partially accepted by Kannicht who offered a comparison with the Anonymous Iamblichi fragment 89 7.3-8 DK.
After a detailed review of the exegetical positions of the scholars from the nineteenth-century until now, my paper aims to corroborate Kannicht’s exegesis by means of a comparison between Hel. 286 and some passages (Lys. 12.90, Dem. 21.155 and 160, Aeschin. 1.126, Isoc. 6.93-94, Ar. Pl. 649-652, 856-860 and 899-908) in which πρᾶγμα/-τα and words with the same root refer to events not dependent on one’s will.
Finally, the analysis of the whole of Helen’s ῥῆσις (255-305) aims to point out its connections with the Gorgian Encominum of Helen and the way in which Euripides in Hel. 286 makes use of the Gorgian antithesis.

In Euripides’ Orestes 485-489 Menelaus has a heated discussion with Tyndareos about the way to behave towards Orestes. Tyndareos affirms that Greek law prohibits to have contacts with murderers and that the observance of law is typical of the identity of the Hellenic people. Menelaus points out that having respect for consanguineous is “ἑλληνικόν” as well, and that everything that results from “ἀνάγχη” is servile, according to the opinion of the “σοφοί”.
The discussion between Tyndareos and Menelaus recalls the conflict between the “ἄγραπτα θεῶν νόμιμα” and the human laws in Sophocles’ Antigone, but Euripides’ approach to the problem is different.
This paper wants to show that at lines 485-489 Euripides most probably reflects the conflict between two conceptions: an ancient and democratic one, represented by Tyndareos, according to which the observance of law is not under discussion, as laws are the guarantee of the democratic freedom; a contemporary and anti-democratic one, represented by Menelaos, according to which laws are a form of slavery imposed by the weak onto those who are strong and better fit for governing.
The democratic conception of law has its highest moment after the victory of the Greeks over the Persians in the Persian wars. Passages as the fr. 169 Snell-Mähler by Pindar, Aesch. Pers. 241-244 and Hdt. 7. 103. 4 - 104. 4-5 are great evidence. The anti-democratic conception of law has its origin in some sophistic theories born in the last years of the Peloponnesian war, when the Athenian democratic institutions went into crisis. The Sisyphus (TrGF 19, 1 N., 88 B 25 DK, ll. 5-10) and Pirithous (TrGF 11, 597 N., 88 B 22 DK) by Critias, Plato’s Gorgias 483e - 484b and Protagoras 337c-d , Antipho. 6. 4-5, are great evidence of the conception of laws as slavery and even a kind of “τυραννίς”.

(eng) - The trial of Jason in the Argonautica (Ap. 3. 1278-1407): reinterpretation of a myth in the context of the poetry of an Alexandrian.
In the narration of the trial that Jason has to face to conquer the Golden Fleece there are some strange elements that need to be explicated: the muzzle of the bulls of Eeta is made of bronze (Ap. 3. 230-231) and Jason uses hisweapons inappropriately: the helmet is first used as container of the dragon’s teeth that the hero has to sow (3.1281, 1321-1322) and then to contain water (3. 1348-1349), while the spear is used to prick the bulls.
Beginning with the parallel with the main model, the fourth Pythian Ode of Pindar, in which these elements donot appear, and through a series of comparisons with the texts of the Greek and Latin literary tradition in whichthe bulls are described, this article finds a plausible explanation in the realistic attitude that characterizes the wayin which Apollonius narrates the mythical adventures of the Argonauts. This attitude, as it seems, has beenunderstood by Ovid, as his description of the bulls in Metamorphoses 7. 104 and particularly in the twelfth epistle of Heroides (vv. 41-44) shows. Moreover, the inappropriate use that Jason makes of the helmet and of the spear can be justified by the will of the Hellenistic author to avoid superposing the figure of his character with that of a peasant.
(fr.)

Constructing and losing memories: the case of the Marathon runner //
Plutarchus (de glor. Ath. 347c) tells us that, according to Heraclides Ponticus, the name of the hoplite who died after running to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persians following the battle of Marathon (490 BCE) was Thersippus Eroeus, commonly known as Eukles; Lucianus (Laps. 3) maintains that he was a hemerodromos ('courier') whose name was Philippides. Despite his chronological closeness to the facts, Herodotus (6.105.1) does not mention this episode, but instead says that the Athenians sent a hemerodromos to Sparta to claim help before the battle of Marathon and that his name was Pheidippides (according to manuscript A) or Philippides (according to D) 1. After trying to solve the problem of the correct form of the name of the hemerodromos decribed by Herodotus by making a comparison with extant sources 2 , my first aim is to clarify the lost identity of the Marathon runner who announced the Greek victory over the Persians. My second aim is to show that the episode of the hoplite who dies after running many miles to announce victory could be a memory of a real fact that was deformed by mythicizing processes. Parallel examples can be found in the accounts of the extraordinary deaths and injuries of Kynegiros, Kallimachos and Polyzelos/Epizelos (Hdt. 6.114; Plut. Parall. gr. et rom. 305c). Myths describing heroes who died after athletic performances, such as Kleobis and Biton (Hdt. 1.31), could have been the model for the afore-mentioned episodes, which aimed to strengthen Greek identity after the glorious victory over the Persians.

Tale concezione è ancora forte in Eraclito (frr.

V. Melis, "Miseria e povertà: ptocheia, penia e filosofie ellenistiche secondo Luciano di Samosata". In Aristophanes’ Pluto (ll. 548, 552-554), Penia, the personification of Poverty, clearly distinguishes between πτωχεία and πενία, reproaching Cremilus for confusing the two concepts and their respective lifestyles: for the farmer, carrying a naive and “blunt” perspective of life, misery and poverty are twins; for Penia, bearer of a philosophical view of existence, beggary consists of living without having anything, while the poor person lives frugally and dedicates themselves to work, not possessing the superfluous but not lacking the necessary. The antithesis between the two positions reflects a proliferation of reflections on the issue of poverty that gave rise to the various conceptions of the major Hellenistic philosophies. Cynicism, skepticism, Epicureanism, and Stoicism developed different responses to this existential problem, each consistent with its own philosophical system. However, in his sharp satire, Lucian of Samosata exposed that philosophers were not equally consistent in adhering to the lifestyles they professed. Although criticism has often emphasized how Lucian explored the theme of wealth and poverty using his keen wit to challenge the social and philosophical conventions of his time, the issue can be further examined. My contribution aims, in particular, to study the relationship between πενία and πτωχεία in Lucian'’s works (e.g., in Nigr., JTr., Gall., Par., Nec., DMort., DMeretr., Pod.) to verify whether and how the framework offered by Lucian can be useful in reconstructing how this relationship was configured in the Hellenistic philosophical currents that Lucian draws upon.

Italy and Sardinia in particular are the scenery of a debate whose central theme is communication and cultural changes, with a focus on social communication and health, public communication and non-discriminatory communication. The conference represents an important opportunity for academics, structured and independent researchers, artists and professionals who revolve around the world of communication and media. Communication professionals, scholars, researchers are involved. Medcom is now a fundamental event in the world of communication because it offers an opportunity of dialogue and, every year, it gives hundreds of researchers and experts from all over the world, not only Western, the chance to discuss.
