Ballotpedia candidate survey

Krizek participated in a survey created by Ballotpedia. The survey was designed to let our readers know more about the candidates and feel confident that they are voting for the best person to represent them. The survey questions appear bolded, and Krizek's responses follow below.

Who are your constituents?
The 44th Delegate District of Virginia (Mount Vernon and Lee portion of Fairfax County)[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
What is the primary job of a state legislator in your view?
To exercise the legislative power of the Commonwealth[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?
I represent all of the people of the 44th Delegate District and attend many community/civic, philanthropic, faith, business and local Chamber community meetings, etc... I also host town meetings and attend constituent requested meetings and events.[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
What is your general philosophy when it comes to economics, jobs, and growth? Do you have any more specific ideas related to these concepts?
I am a big proponent of infrastructure investment to create and retain jobs and grow the economy. We must increase Virginia's infrastructure investment to fuel a first-class economy. Indeed, a serious investment in infrastructure will have a "multiplier effect" on the region's economy, benefiting employment, GDP, worker incomes, more transportation options, consumer activity, public health and safety, tax revenues and our state's overall competitiveness.[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
What kind of legacy would you like to leave?
That I always listened to my constituents and worked tirelessly to find solutions to both big and small matters, and that I was willing to work across the aisle when necessary to get things done for the good of the Commonwealth.[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
What should the legislature's relationship with the governor be, and how would you personally work towards actualizing that?
It should be a strong partnership, even if at times adversarial, working towards a common goal to make Virginia the best place to live, work and raise a family.[9]
—Paul E. Krizek
What news sources do you follow? What factors do you consider when selecting a news source? How do you think the public views the media?
I read as many Virginia papers as possible through the Virginia News (Virginia Public Access Project) daily feed. I am also an avid reader of The Economist.[9]
—Paul E. Krizek

Candidate website

As of August 2017, Krizek's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Support Transit Options on Richmond Highway/U.S. 1

My top priority is securing the funding to keep transportation improvements along the Richmond Highway corridor moving along as fast as possible. Last October officials signed a resolution recommending that Rt. 1 be expanded to six-lanes with multi-use paths, a median with a dedicated bus rapid transit system to Woodbridge, and a two-station Yellow Line Metro extension to Hybla Valley. The $2 million for the study that resulted in this recommendation was secured by Sen. Toddy Puller and Del. Scott Surovell. I will work with Sen. Surovell and other legislators to secure $4 million for the next phase for environmental reviews and preliminary engineering.

Increase Teachers’ Salaries/ Engage Parents in School Decisions
Great public schools are the cornerstone of a vibrant, thriving community. I support a meaningful increase in pay for our hard-working teachers to continue to attract and maintain the best educators in the country for our children. Right now, we are losing teachers to Arlington and other higher-paying neighboring jurisdictions. Fairfax school enrollment, especially along the Richmond Highway corridor, is growing fast and our facilities desperately need to catch up. I will fight for more state funding as well as work with local elected officials to find more funding. I agree with Delegate Krupicka's effort to raise our cigarette tax rate from $0.30 to $2.00 per pack and dedicate that revenue to our schools. Such a "sin" tax would provide an estimated increase of up to an additional $500 million a year for our schools. (Only one state has a lower cigarette tax rate than Virginia.) Most importantly, as a parent with a child in the Fairfax County Public School system, I believe the community must always be involved in a transparent, engaging process regarding any changes to our local school boundaries and new school construction projects. I am a strong proponent of expanding access to early childhood education, preschool, and quality childcare. Every dollar spent on education creates a greater savings down the line, and makes Virginia stronger.

Fair State Funding for Our Public Schools
Current State school funding formulas favor rural localities whose elected officials control the House of Delegates. The existing formulas give too much weight to income and property values and do not adequately take into consideration the higher cost of running schools in Northern Virginia or the diversity of our student population. The state’s education funding needs to be updated to reflect our unique challenges in Fairfax County.

Raise the Minimum Wage
Nobody working full-time in Virginia should be forced to live in poverty. As a longtime charity executive, I recognize that working people cannot survive on the current minimum wage, especially in this region. I strongly support legislation to raise the Virginia minimum wage to at least $10 an hour as soon as possible. Increasing the minimum wage will improve Virginia’s economy and reward the hard work of our friends and neighbors in the district.

Offer an Alternative to Predatory Lending
Anyone driving down Richmond Highway through the 44th Delegate District can't help but notice the large number of car title loan lenders; it is out of control. These lenders charge astronomical interest rates and prey on people in the most desperate of circumstances. I will work to find funding for alternative lending opportunities by working with local nonprofits and the faith community to come up with creative low-interest small-dollar loans.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Virginia

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states. To contribute to the list of Virginia scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
