Pine Tree Hoodie

My name is Ava, and I'm a high school entrepreneur! I run Akonna, which offers a variety of embroidered apparel such as hoodies, crewnecks and shirts, along with other items such as totes and patches. Entrepreneurship is one of my greatest passions, and one of my favourite parts about running a small business are the real connections and relationships you get to build - from talking to customers all around the world, but also meeting other passionate business owners in Vancouver. One of my main goals is to inspire other youth and prove that younger entrepreneurs are just as capable as anyone else in running a successful business! I also donate 10% of all proceeds to the Vancouver General Hospital for cancer research. Tell us about how your product is made. What is your favourite part?

Upside Down Happy Face Hoodie

I first create the design either on paper or digitally, then I transfer it over to my embroidery digitizing software. Depending on the type of design, it can either be super quick or a very long process! From there, I transfer the file to my embroidery machine, hoop the product, and the machine handles the last mile! My favourite part is probably the initial design - there's so many different possibilities and it's exciting to see what it can turn out like in the end . Is your workshop / creative space neat & tidy or a beautiful mess? Extremely messy! I have my embroidery machine and stock all upstairs, but there's so many boxes! It's definitely better now than it was before though :)

I achieve this by offering stand-out designs on high quality paper goods & gifts. How do you stay creative? A change in scenery or escaping of the everyday, is so important to keeping my mind fresh. To do that, I like to spend time in nature, take my dog on an adventure, spend a long weekend away with friends, or take extended periods of time to travel to places I've never been before. Is your workshop / creative space neat & tidy or a beautiful mess?

Environmental Sticker Pack

Since my place is quite small, my inventory and working space fits where it can. My desk is in my living room which is next to the front door and near my kitchen so it's a bit of an "all-in-one" deal right now. Hopefully one day I can have a space that is strictly dedicated to my business, instead of having it strewn across my house.

Anja Jane Shop

Anja Sheriden Bowen Island, BC Introduce yourself and your business

BC Flora & Fauna

There is magic and a quiet sense of tranquility in Anja Jane’s work. The Vancouver-based artist has translated her deep connection to Mother Nature into intricate art prints and postcards featuring nature scenes from North America, from the lavish jungle of Hawaii to the enchanting British Columbia coastline or quaint tree-lined Montreal streets. In her nature scenes of luscious forests, vibrant flowers, whimsical creatures and sun-kissed mountains over turquoise waters, the folksy charm of her Norwegian and Polish heritage intertwines with the breathtaking landscape of the Pacific Northwest – now home for her. Being kind to the environment is an integral part to the business using her illustrations to inspire wonder in others. So they too will become passionate and protect this beautiful planet we all share. (Paperblanks) How do you stay creative? My spiritual practice keeps me present and in a space of gratitude and devotion tapping into the divine, a space where the creates flows. I spend most of my time in nature, hiking, kayaking, skiing or working in my garden. Mother nature gives us so much, she feeds me and my creative soul.

Were you born and raised in the Vancouver area or do you come from afar? I was born 8000 km away! So pretty far. I grew up in Suffolk, England and just before I moved to Canada and was living in London. Art Cards by Valerie Shop

Valerie Gilbert Coquitlam, BC Introduce yourself and your business Over the years I have dabbled in various crafts, in fact, I owned a chocolate shop/handcrafted gift store in Coquitlam for many years. While living in Australia, I wanted something to do with my hands that didn’t take a lot of room (that’s funny)! While holidaying back in Canada I found an iris folding kit and the rest is history. I returned to Canada in 2009 and started card making almost full time . I now create a number of my own designs, often from customer requests. I am able to import papers from around the world and enjoy creating unique, one-of-a-kind cards and framed art. How do you stay creative? There are always new paper designs and customer requests which can, at times, be challenging.

How long have you been doing this for? I opened my Etsy shop after a big move to Vancouver from the middle of Siberia in 2012. Over the years I've been juggling a full-time job and my art business for a few years and then in 2017 I decided to jump into my biz full time. Etsy helped me a lot with this important decision, because I knew I could rely on my average monthly sales and see a huge opportunity to grow my line and online presence. How do you stay creative? Nature is my favourite source of inspiration and creativity. If I need a boost, I go to the mountains! I'm lucky to live very close to two amazing spots Golden Ears Provincial Park and Grant Narrows Regional Park.

People ask us all the time if we’re sisters. Hey, Asians don’t all look the same, you know. (We kid... sorta.)

Veespoke Shop

Valerie Braacx Vancouver, BC Introduce yourself and your business My name is Val and I'm the founder of Veespoke! I started this business when I was on mat leave with my first son. It started with the infinity scarf and expanded to triangle and blanket scarves. In 2020, I stepped into the world of mask making! How do you stay creative? I love experimenting with new fabrics and textures - most recently I started dyeing fabric (specifically tie dye). Is this your full time gig? If not, what is your day job? Funny enough, I decided to work on Veespoke (and Vancouver Etsy Co) full time as of March 2020!

Boho Fringe Scarf

I've been crocheting since I was a teenager, so that's a solid 20 years since I started. I grew up in small town Saskatchewan into a family who was resourceful and crafty and I learned to hand sew and crochet at a young age. It was just something that was a part of growing up. In 2011 I picked up my hook after a crochet hiatus and haven't put it down since. How do you stay creative? 'm pretty lucky that my whole life is creative. Whether I'm making a dance or a piece of clothing, a good portion of my day is spent creating. Creating, in one way or another, is essentially my full time job - some days I can't even believe it! Music really fuels my creativity, so there's always a jam playing either in my dance studio or my home studio!

You + Me Shop

Patty Abbott Vancouver, BC Introduce yourself and your business Growing up in Revelstoke, BC I have always had a passion for creating. Wanting to know how things are created and trying new ideas. Candles have always been a love of mine but 7 years ago I was found out that a lot of the candles that I owned were made out of petroleum and used lead wicks. My partner was diagnosed with ALS and we eliminated all toxins from our home to help him deal with his illness. Since then I have been on the hunt for a clean burning candle. I did a lot of research with the different types of wax and choose a premium unique apricot and coconut blend. Tell us about how your product is made. What is your favourite part?

Enchanted Forest, Sierra and Amber & Smoke Glass Candles

We use a custom blend of apricot and coconut wax that is eco-friendly and clean burning, paired with lead-free wicks. All of our products are cruelty-free and vegan. Each candle is crafted by hand from start to finish in our studio in Vancouver, BC. The unique and delicate aroma of a You + Me Candle fills the room to help you create, relax and rejuvenate. What do you wish customers knew about you or your business? Candles bring instant happiness. I love watching people experience our candles for the first time. Watching their expressions as a scent brings back a special memory brings me joy. Knowing that they bring that candle home and it becomes part of new family memories make my heart full.
