OurMission

Vancouver Etsy Co empowers creative entrepreneurs by providing resources, education, and opportunities to grow. The goal is to create a community of inclusive and supportive Designers, Creatives and Makers from the greater Vancouver area who are interested in sharing knowledge, building their business and making meaningful community connections.

PlanningTeam

VALERIE BRAACX

ANITA CHOW

Born and raised in the Vancouver area, Val never thought she would be a creative/maker. Armed with her degree in Criminology from SFU, she worked at Dress for Success Vancouver until she welcomed her first child. From there, the creative (and entrepreneurial) bug hit, and she started her Etsy shop, Veespoke.

Since then, she dove head first into the craft world, participating in markets (some of her favourites include Got Craft and Portobello West), then organizing markets as part of the Vancouver Etsy Co. She’s passionate about empowering creatives and makers in their business journey by providing opportunities and a community for them to be part of and thrive in

When she’s not working on VEC or Veespoke, she is focusing on her most important job as a mom of three boys

A forever entrepreneur, a supporter of cute + funny animal vids, and an adamant optimist (until she's not).

A born-and-raised Vancouverite who made her mark in the craft world with her (now retired) knitwear business. Anita now spends her time as a consumer and cheerleader of local and handmade goods and services. She claims she is “efficient because I’m lazy” and therefore a pro at streamlining processes to just make things work better After many years of being a vendor and customer, she has a keen eye for in-person market displays, online product photos, and effective lookbooks

When she is not delving into the craft world, she also works at BC Cancer and deep into true crime stories and her pup, Penny

Bluefish Bohemian offers a collection of handmade Artisan jewelry with a free-spirited, boho vibe. Designs are influenced by the beauty of the West Coast and feature hand picked, semiprecious stones, sterling silver, and gold fill. Each piece is made thoughtfully with intention and attention to detail. From larger, one-of-a-kind crystal pendants, to limited edition wrap bracelets and sterling silver necklaces, there is something offered for all in our collection!

A day in my life:

On a typical weekday the focus starts with being sure kids are ed and out the door on time. These days I am down to 2 as one s away at University in Ontario. Then I catch up on emails, heck on materials and/or order supplies. Next I'm packing online orders which have been made the previous day(s), and heading to my shipping company to drop off packages.

ometimes I meet up with a fellow creative-a kindred spirit-for unch. In the afternoon, I work on any new orders that have ome in, which often carries into the evening. On bright days I ake photos of new products, as I prefer the natural light. And of ourse, I always fit in at least one dog walk, on the beautiful trails in the forest near my home.

How do you stay creative?

o much of my creative inspiration comes from the beautiful materials that I find in my sourcing. I'm passionate about finding unique and interesting stones and beads. Sometimes I select hings having no idea what they will become, other times, I see a ision for them instantly. What I've learned over the years is, reative energy ebbs and flows, and you have to enjoy every part of the process - even the failures. For failure is success in progress!

CLAXTON GROVE

Lauren, Vancouver

Introduce yourself and your business

@claxton

www.claxtongrove.com

claxtongrove

Claxton Grove is a line of paper goods and botanical gifts that celebrate the beauty and symbolism of flowers. A self-described flower enthusiast, my goal is to create beautiful items to be gifted, or admired in your home. I've long been fascinated by the historic, symbolic, and cultural meanings associated with flowers and foliage. I'm excited to share them with you now!

did you come up with your business name?

How is your product made? What is your fave part?

First, I pick and press each flower myself. Come spring and summer, my little house is full of flower presses!

For the prints, I create original art prints, which I scan using a high-resolution scanner. After a little finessing and editing, I send the digital art to a local independent printer who turns my original work into realistic-looking prints! I also make each magnet and jewelry piece by hand, which each has its own process. However, each product I make involves several small steps, including tweezers, delicately pressed flowers, and a generous amount of patience.

Addalittlebitofbodytext

name Claxton Grove comes from my time living in London, UK. Claxton Grove was the name of the street I lived on in a Victorian-era house in West London. I always liked the name and it felt fitting for the botanical-inspired line I dreamt up whilst living there. The Claxon Grove name is a fond tribute to a wonderful time in my life, exploring the parks, gardens, and history the city and surrounding countryside had to offer. grove

COVE CAP COMPANY

Jenn

Introduce yourself and your business

Hi, we are Cove Cap Co. - a local (we both grew up / live in North Van, with one of us in the Cove!) mama owned brand that focuses on gender neutral minimalist five panel hats for toddlers/kids. All of our hats are made in Canada, using GOTS certified organic cotton with natural dyes in muted colours inspired by natureusing ethical and sustainable practices.

How did you come up with your business name?

Jenn (one of the founders) grew up in Deep Cove! Jenn and Krissy (the other founder) spent a lot of their youth down in the Cove - enjoying its natural beauty!

How did you get started?

Our venture was sparked by motherhood - while shopping for our littles in our lives, we quickly realized that much of kids’ apparel is loud, low quality and not made locally. we are striving to change that with an organic collection of hats in muted colours, inspired by our natural surroundings, go with every outfit and are suitable for any occasion. Our products are made in Canada and are built to last - easily adjustable to last many years and durable enough to be passed on to siblings.

Best thing about your business?

We LOVE what we do! We love working with our local partners to help keep Vancouver businesses thriving. We love working with other Mamas and kiddos. It’s all about balancing motherhood with business and having some fun along the way!

Give us a brief snapshot of “a day in your life”

Stroller walks / conferences calls + entertaining kids while developing marketing strategies. Busy nap times and late night order packing. It’s all a fun balancing act!

Introduce yourself and your business

My name is Josie Thomas and I am a Canadian artist who works from my home studio in Surrey, BC. My passion for art, nature and the outdoors inspired me to start my jewelry business in 2020.

ForestialFriends uses eco friendly epoxy to preserve botanicals such as mushrooms, flowers and plants. Mainly specializing in jewelry design, we also create larger terrarium-style pieces.

This intricate process begins with foraging and drying or pressing each forest treasure by hand, from the tiny pieces of moss, to the bold, magical mushrooms All of the botanicals used in our artwork are native to British Columbia, Canada.

Hi, my name is Anna and I am the founder of Good Smelling Things. I hand-pour soy wax candles that are sustainable, vegan and non-toxic.

How did you get started?

Good Smelling Things started as a passion project almost two years ago. The field I was working in back then completely disappeared due to covid and it was time for me to re-invent myself. I found it was extremely difficult to purchase nice and personalized gifts at the start of the pandemic as most places were in a lockdown and stores were closed. This is when I opened up my online store and offered customers to personalize their own candle.

What do you wish customers knew about you or your business?

That my candles are all customizable from the jar, the scent to the label to make the perfect gift.

How do you stay creative?

I enjoy finding brands that prioritize slow fashion, sustainability, and supporting hand-loom artisans. Researching new weaves and their history inspires me to create products that promote wellness. Connecting with nature also inspires me and influenced our line of linen lavender sachets and yoga eye pillows.

Tell us about how your product is made

I work with our fabric suppliers to select hand-loom fabrics that have an interesting history and story behind them. I also look at how and where they are made, if they are made in a sustainable manner, and if the artisans are treated and paid fairly. If they pass this criteria, they are included in our collection.

From there, we go onto my favourite part, the design process. Depending on the material and its properties, I accordingly assign them to a specific product

How do you stay creative?

That I get to exposed Kallpana to everyone that appreciates handmade garments.

How did you come up with your business name?

Kallpana in Quechua means to flow. I have let this whole process flow to see where it will take me, I am enjoying every part of the process, flowing with all.

What's your favorite part of being an Etsy Seller?

IThat I get to exposed Kallpana to everyone that appreciates handmade garments.

Tell us about how your product is made. What is your favourite part?

The jumpsuits are made with natural fibers such as 100% linen and 100% cotton. Each garment is not designed with anticipation, the applique comes at any time, that is what I enjoy the most, how the details come spontaneously; I love that it surprises me every time, it's like the cherry on top.

Give us a brief snapshot of “a day in your life”

I usually go for a morning walk with my dog Jasper and exercise at the gym right after I prepare meals; lunch and dinner, and I go to my studio most of the afternoon to work on sewing projects.

KELSY RENEE STUDIO

Kelsy, Abbotsford

Introduce yourself and your business

Hi I’m Kelsy, the artist at Kelsy Renee Studio. I specialize in storytelling through knotted fibre art tapestries. (Aka macrame) If there’s ever a memory or story you’d like captured in a piece of fibre art, my commissions are open!

Tell us about how your product is made. Fave part?

To make my designs I typically sketch out a rough idea on Procreate. I’ll play with colour palettes at this point too sometimes. Once I have a design laid out, the structured part has to happen. I measure everything, so that I have a clear pattern that I can replicate, if need be, in the future. I measure every piece of cord before I use it (I’ve gotten quite quick at this). I use my hands to knot all the cords onto the dowel and then proceed to knot the design I’ve sketched, The final touches include a trim (this can change the whole feeling of a piece) and my signature piece of raffia tied to the back, so there’s no confusion as to which way to hang it against the wall

What’s the most challenging part of your business?

Marketing is the most challenging for me. However, I’ve learned a lot and I do enjoy this aspect. There’s just never enough time or energy to do all the things in a day!

LANABETTY

Lana, Vancouver

Introduce yourself and your business

My name is Lana and I am the goldsmith of my business, LanaBetty. I make geometric contemporary jewelry using a combination of 3d printing and traditional jewelry design. My newest collection, Mantra, is a combination of thoughtful art and gentle reminders to support and guide you through your day. Each pendant is imbued with a mystical formula of invocation, each inscribed with its own unique mantra; a small message of strength and encouragement to find your path, wherever it may lead. I sincerely hope you will join me to explore this new way to share my art!

What's your favorite part of being an Etsy Seller?

I love connecting with shoppers from all over the world.

Tell us about how your product is made. Fave part?

There are many many steps to create a cast metal pendant in sterling silver or bronze. For me, it starts with the 3d model that I design. Being able to hold the 3d print in my hands to understand the size and scale is really helpful in the design process. With a finalized 3d print, I will use it to create a mold and use lost wax casting to create multiples. It is a labour intensive and time intensive process and I am deeply proud of it!

Hey there! I'm Steph, the founder and one-woman business owner of Ridge Bidge. I'm so excited to share my story with you. I was born in New West, but I spent my early childhood in the Lower Mainland and Lillooet. However, I've spent most of my life in Germany, where I worked a really ungrateful office job that left me feeling unfulfilled and struggling with depression.

Eventually, I knew that something had to change. I decided to move back to BC with my newborn and partner, eager to start a new chapter in my life. For almost three years, I was a stay-at-home mom, focused on raising my little one and settling into my new home. But deep down, I knew that I wanted more. I wanted to do something creative and fulfilling that would allow me to express myself and share my passion with others.

It was on a warm fall day while gazing out at the majestic Golden Ears in Maple Ridge that the idea for Ridge Bidge came to me. I wanted to create leisure apparel that spoke to mountain lovers like me, featuring unique and stylish embroidery that would help people show off their love for the great outdoors.

And now, here I am, living my dream as the proud owner of Ridge Bidge. It hasn't always been easy, but it's been worth it every step of the way. I'm thrilled to be able to share my passion with others and to create clothing that brings joy and inspiration to people's lives. Thanks for joining me on this journey!

Best thing about your business?

I turned our basement into my embroidery studio, complete with all my supplies and trusty machine. It's a lifesaver during market seasons, despite the organized chaos and lack of natural light. Grateful for this dedicated workspace to pursue my passion.

I wanted to share my craft with everyone, and hus, Seed to Sky Wood Company was born.

How did you come up with your business name?

Based in Squamish, serving the sea to sky region I came up with the name as a clever word play on the beautiful Sea to Sky highway. Seed to Sky is the journey a tree takes from the moment it is planted, growing upward reaching for the sky and for every sale we make we plants 1 - 5 trees

What’s the most challenging part of your business?

Definitely the business side, and "wearing all the hats" of my small business. My skill and experience is in the woodworking side. I didnt have any experience in running a business, nor was it really something I aspired to do, but had to learn if I wanted to pursue my passion of woodworking in the realm of high end hand made furniture and home décor. So its been a challenging journey through that side of things.

Aside from that, time management is also a big challenge. I often spend way longer than I quoted for on a project, making sure every detail is perfect and finished to the highest of quality.

What do you wish customers knew about you or your business?

What it costs to purchase sustainably sourced solid hard wood slabs and the amount of time and work that goes into every piece I make.

TO THE NEXT JOURNEY

Pegah, Squamish

Introduce yourself and your business

My name is Pegah, and TTNJ is a brand of no-bullshit food products that elevate your gastronomic experience. It's fairly simple, we're not mass producing. Instead, we're setting out to do a few items and do them really darn well. For now, we're slinging hot sauce.

How did you come up with your name?

To The Next Journey was initially our travel blog over a decade ago. It documented our wanderlust tales, rattling around in a 60s series Land Cruiser, cooking and eating along the way.

Tell us abouthow your product is made?

I use the ingredients listed, cook up batches of hot sauce, put it in to bottles and label them. My favourite part is transforming what are relatively ordinary ingredients in to a unique flavour profile to stimulate the olfactory system

What do you wish customers knew about you or your business?

VICTORIA YAHARA STUDIO

Victoria, North Vancouver

Introduce yourself and your business

My name is Victoria and I live in North Vancouver with my husband and our two young boys. I am a Linocut printmaker who is inspired by Canadian wildlife, Motherhood and the botanical symbolism from the Victorian Language of flowers All of which is reflected in my linocut series that uses flowers to depict different themes such as Love, Friendship & Motherhood.

How did you get started?

I became very inspired to create during my maternity leave after the birth of each of my sons. Both times I wanted to honour my new baby. With my first son I created my Canadian Wildlife Alphabet tea towel / wall hanging. For my second son, I honoured my breastfeeding journey with a Linocut print of a silhouette of Mother and Baby.

Tell us about how your product is made. What is your favourite part?

I design and draw illustrations that I transfer to a Lino block and delicately carve the image out. I then ink the block & print it onto watercolour paper with my small hand-operated printing press. Everything is hand done from start to finish by myself.

The first test print of a new block is always thrilling! It’s the first time you see all your hard work of carving come to life. It is also where you see details that need finalizing.

WEST END WICKS

Emily, Vancouver

Introduce yourself and your business

We are West End Wicks, a local homemade candle business with a penchant for local wildlife! Our duo consists of Emily who creates the scents and pours the candles and Kevin who designs the artwork and branding. Our passion for nature and the environment inspired the names and scents of our candles. Each candle is named after a bird that can be spotted in the Lower Mainland. We also give back to organizations working to support our wildlife and donate $1 from each candle to the Wildlife Rescue of BC.

How did you get started?

Finding a creative outlet to pursue during quarantine in March 2020 led to the creation of West End Wicks. Emily has always loved the way candles enhance the feeling of a space through the fragrance and warmth they bring. Designing candles allowed her to experiment and create a product that embodies the environment around her. While spending time at home during COVID, she began to notice all of the different birds that would land on our balcony. The excitement they would bring to the day inspired the names of each candle.

The uninhibited experimentation. Neither of us comes from a business background or has entrepreneurial roots. Every decision; from scent development, to staging a photo shoot, to the type of labels we use develops from discussions between us. Although it can be draining at times, we enjoy the successes and challenges that come from our collaborative creative process. West End Wicks started as a creative outlet, and it hasn’t strayed far from that.
