Palmers Green

the 8th May 1905, Miss Alice Hum welcomed 12 girls to her School in the heart of Palmers Green. In 1918, the School moved to Avondale Hall on Hoppers Road in Winchmore Hill, where local Suffragettes had held their meetings, and where we are still based today.

We value and nurture the individuality of all pupils within our one-school family and take great pride in the unique contribution they make to PGHS.

What aspects of the school are you most well-known for?

Our class sizes and exceptional pastoral care offer a level of personal attention that is unrivalled, and which allows every pupil to be their individual, authentic self.

Our pupils achieve excellent examination results. In 2023, the overall percentage of A*/9/8 grades was a magnificent 41% and A*/9 to A/7 is 69%, placing them amongst the top performers in the country.

We believe passionately in girls’ education. Focused teaching groups ensure outstanding pupil engagement, collaboration and communication in lessons and allow our inspirational teachers to provide individualised support and challenge. This contributes to our excellent results and pupils’ readiness to lead

At PGHS, girls excel in a wide range of sports, owing to the excellent facilities available to us at The Walker Ground, Southgate and Southbury Leisure Centres. From rugby to rounders, swimming to street dance, tennis to trampolining, sport at PGHS has something for everyone.

Originating as rural settlements in the medieval period, they gradually evolved into bustling communities as London expanded. Totteridge, with its picturesque countryside and historic manors, was once home to prosperous landowners and served as a retreat for affluent city dwellers. Today, Totteridge and Whetstone retain much of their charm while embracing modernity, characterized by a mix of quaint cottages, Victorian architecture, and contemporary amenities, making them sought-after residential neighborhoods with a fascinating past.

After a lot of hard work and major transformation works, the new Caffe Vero was born in 2010! Today, it remains as one of the most popular places in Woodside Park for meeting friends, quick lunches and a relaxing afternoon coffee. Salcombe Prep & Nursery

Once children start at our Prep School, they are ready to build upon the strong foundations already laid. They are proud of their school and the pupils who have gone before. Our Alumni speaks for itself, with Professor Lord Robert Winston, Karren Brady, Maro Itoje and Ricky Boletto among our former pupils. Our children are encouraged to learn through failure, to not give up but find different ways of approaching a problem. They are critical thinkers and love to learn. Salcombe pupils leave us, ready to take on the next challenges of their academic and social journey. Through innovative Ed-Tech provision, excellent Drama, Music and Art experiences, alongside challenging core and non-core subjects, our pupils are ready and prepared.

Ivy House School

At Ivy House School, we believe that children reach their true potential when they feel safe, secure and valued as part of the community. Ivy House School’s pupils learn in an environment which is deeply focused on nurturing the individual; where they enjoy learning and develop a passion for knowledge. Our individualised approach enables us to tailor learning to the needs of each child, therefore enabling success in all curriculum areas; academic, creative and sporting. Learning is further enhanced through our wide range of extra-curricular activities taught by specialist teachers.

King Alfred School

King Alfred School is an informal independent day school situated on the edge of Hampstead Heath in London. With over 700 students from Reception age through to a flourishing Sixth Form, we are a vibrant and friendly community where the emphasis, both academically and socially, is on discovering and maximising the potential of each child. The school stands out from the prevailing

educational environment as a school which achieves academic success without unnecessary pressures and social success through the development of relationships and responsibility rather than external discipline. At the heart of our ethos is a child-centred approach. We appreciate that every child is unique, and we get to know every individual.  It is a school that is genuinely loved by students, parents and staff alike.

Goodwyn School

We have endeavoured to portray ourselves by painting with words and pictures, but realise this can only suggest to you the unique characteristics that make Goodwyn the school it is.

There is a certain something about the school that exudes warmth, happiness and wellbeing, which in turn generates confidence. Second generation families return to the school and, on setting foot back inside, instantly remember happy memories of yesteryear. The fact that Goodwyn has endeared itself to so many staff, pupils and parents indicates that we maintained its ethos. Many have contributed towards the school and now others continue to uphold the Goodwyn name. Yes, one must make changes, but we endeavour to maintain the uniqueness that is Goodwyn Goodwyn School Hammers Lane, Mill Hill, London, NW7 4DB T. +44 020 8959 3756

Help and support from your local Council

You should inform your Local Authority of where you are moving from and where you are moving to around a month before you move. You can do this here. https://system8.rbwm.gov.uk/ publicaccesslive/selfservice/services/ changeofaddress/coastart.htm

You’ll need to include the forwarding addresses for every adult in the property that pays council tax.

Planning & Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

www.barnet.gov.uk/planning-andbuilding-control/planning

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
