A little bit of history

“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

www.hamptons.co.uk

The history of Surbiton dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is mentioned as part of the Manor of Kingston. The area was primarily agricultural and sparsely populated for much of its early history. Surbiton began to undergo significant development in the 19th century, particularly with the arrival of the railway. The opening of Surbiton railway station in 1838, as part of the London and Southampton Railway, played a crucial role in transforming Surbiton into a commuter suburb. The railway made it easier for people to travel to and from central London, leading to an increase in residential development. The Victorian era saw a boom in residential construction in Surbiton. The area became popular among affluent Londoners looking for a suburban escape. Victorian and Edwardian architecture characterizes many of the homes built during this period. Surbiton became known for its cultural and social scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area attracted artists, writers, and intellectuals, contributing to a vibrant community. Some notable residents included writer Thomas Hardy and artist Richard Jefferies.

Family days out

Surbiton is a great destination for a family trip offering entertainment for kids of all ages. We’ve picked some of the most popular family-friendly things to do and sorted them into a handy list.

Fishponds Park Fishponds is a small municipal park in Surbiton - a haven for people, plants, and animals alike, with two ponds, woodland spaces, a community orchard and garden, and an area of rich grassland managed as a meadow. The park was originally within the grounds of a mid-18th century estate, The Fishponds. Now the park is managed by Kingston Council, supported by us - the active Friends of Fishponds group. We run regular friendly Action Days for volunteers to undertake maintenance, planting and litter picking in the park. Everyone is welcome to take part -follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram or check out the events page on our website to stay up to date with our events and activities. 22 Hollyfield Rd, Surbiton KT5 9AL

Victoria Recreation Ground As part of the Community parks programme, we have improved access around the park and created two new connecting footpaths, as well as repairing and resurfacing existing footpaths. We also asked for the communities’ views on our draft plans for playground improvements at Victoria Recreation. Feedback was very positive, and we have now installed new play equipment for young children, including cradle seat swings for toddlers, a bigger trampoline, and new vibrant surface playing areas throughout. There are also two items of equipment suitable for youngsters with disabilities. There are four tennis courts open to the public, all up to play deck standard. These courts are leased to a qualified LTA coach who organises various tennis sessions for adults and children of all abilities. The courts have just been refurbished and now have a bright, attractive colour scheme. All courts are serviced by an automatic Pay and Display machine so please purchase a ticket to play. There is usually an attendant who periodically checks the courts. Our two bowling greens are very popular, especially in the summer. Several clubs use the greens and there are tournaments held throughout the season, the Surrey competition being the bowls calendar highlight.
