A little bit of history

“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

www.hamptons.co.uk

Stroud is a historic market town located in Gloucestershire, England. Its history is rich and diverse, spanning centuries of development and cultural change. This article will provide a concise overview of the history of Stroud. Stroud’s early history can be traced back to Roman times when it was a small settlement known as “Stred.” The name “Stroud” is believed to have originated from the Old English word “strod,” meaning “marshy ground,” which described the landscape of the area. During the medieval period, Stroud developed into a market town, benefiting from its location on the important trade route between Gloucester and Bristol. In 1258, Stroud was granted a market charter, formalizing its role as a center of commerce. The town’s growth was further catalyzed during the Industrial Revolution. Stroud became a hub for the booming textile industry, particularly known for its production of high-quality woolen cloth. The Stroudwater Navigation, a canal built in the 18th century, connected Stroud to the Severn Estuary, making the transportation of goods much easier and facilitating industrial expansion. This period of industrialization brought significant wealth and population growth to the town.

Interview with Thomson Design & Build Tell us a little about the background of your firm? I come from a building family, my father’s business was established in 1968. Thomson Design & Build was established with a new approach with professional project management, providing a customer-focused experience. The company has an established reputation for high-quality work and outstanding warranty support. We offer lifetime guarantees, and that has proven to be very popular, allowing our customers to be confident that any issues will not become a burden to them. The range of our work is very broad, and that is a testament to the wide range of skills instilled in our tradespeople. Our fully qualified staff support the up-and-coming younger generation, ensuring that we retain the best people. Over the years, we have invested in quality equipment, an in-house joinery workshop and staff training. We maintain the business as a whole so that we are not reliant on others, and we are ready to take on a broad range of work with minimal fuss.

our clients on the best way to insulate their homes, reducing heating requirements and creating more comfort. We also work closely with our partners for the installation of sustainable energy solutions, advising on the best ways to reduce emissions and costs with modern solutions. Do you work with investors and landlords? We work with a variety of clients and business owners whose primary income is from their properties. Therefore, we understand the time pressures and efficiency requirements to keep these businesses profitable. A large percentage of our work is made up of returning customers who either own very large homes, in need of constant attention, or developers and landlords whose primary focus is maximising the potential of their property assets. Looking back, is there a job that you are most proud of? We regularly carry out work on properties with difficult access. A few years ago, we were asked to build an extension but there seemed to be no way in or out for delivering materials. Eventually, we moved over 100 tons of earth from the garden, enabling a new driveway to be built, and consequently, a beautiful extension made from the best Cotswold stone. The vision to carry out this work has facilitated the potential for many projects in the future as relocating all of this earth has reclaimed land that was previously inaccessible.

What type of projects have you been working on recently? Most of our work is local to Gloucestershire and so we have been very lucky to have been selected to work on some beautiful properties around the Five Valleys area. We are currently building an extension to a country home which will become a home studio office for the client, whose business is run from their home. Our constitution can be found here. We typically stage five or six productions of our own each year, from classics to musicals, drama to pantomime. And we increasingly take our productions out into the community: we have recently performed at the Stroud Theatre Festival, the Stroud Shakespeare Festival, St Laurence Church and Stroud Brewery. We also make the facilities available to visiting companies, schools, dance classes, toddler groups and many more. Everything is run by volunteers, so we are always keen to welcome new members.
