Interview with Chris Dyson

Tell us a little of the background of your architects practice?

Chris Dyson Architects is based in central London; we work all over the capital and surrounding counties, as well as further afield – last year we even completed our first refurbishment of an Italian palazzo. The studio brings together architects of different backgrounds and ages, young and less young, and it’s wonderful to see our team’s work often recognised with awards.

Do you offer pre-exchange assessments to residential clients?

Yes, we find this can be very helpful. It allows both parties to get to know each other and develop an understanding of the needs and scope of a project, and to highlight some of the opportunities and limitations of a property. As Carlo Scarpa once said, “our duty is to give buildings a new lease of life.”

What are the most popular requests from residential clients?

Our portfolio is a mix of heritage and contemporary buildings, so many clients come to us for the extension or refurbishment of listed

architecture, from Georgian terraces to country estates. We have a lot of expertise in seeing these kinds of projects through planning, which can offer reassurance. Other clients are looking for a contemporary extension or completely new building, and the potential held in the blank page of a sketchbook is equally exciting. Whether existing or new build, we enjoy working with clients to identify the opportunities that their particular property offers – in some cases, this can be a relatively modest intervention to help to create a better sense of flow between rooms, or to extend into the basement or eaves. In others, such as Maison Colbert, it can be removing all the internal walls dividing a row of terraced houses to create a single, spectacular galleried living space.

Is there a project you are most proud of?

All have a special place in the studio, and all feel personal to the team. I suppose our recent work most easily springs to mind: last year we completed Mr Barrow’s House, a very elegant, curved extension to a grand Highgate home. I’m fond of our houses on Wapping Pierhead for the fine detailing of the brick. There’s the endless variety of our work in Spitalfields, and all the ways the area’s Huguenot houses can be adapted. Then there is our house in Suffolk, where we added a contemporary timber garden room to a thatched cottage. As you see, too hard to choose just one! We are proud of all our projects, but we’re always learning and it’s nice to think our best work is ahead of us.

Some words of encouragement to the family who are hesitating to make that first call to an architect.

There is nothing to lose but much to be gained from a conversation. We are a friendly team with a lot of experience, and we’re connected to a wide professional network, able to draw on specialist knowledge if it’s needed. Describe your design style?

Established in 2017, award-winning East Londonbased LOUD specialises in mainly residential dwellings, providing innovative design and architectural solutions. Loud do not do ‘box on the back of the house’ designs.

Kate and her team place great emphasis on having fun with their clients and, above all, making the impossible come to life. Embodying the belief that architecture should create joy, they love to create one-off living spaces using an innovative and unique mix of building materials, shapes, and colours.

At loud, we create one of a kind, unique spaces. We love using texture and colour in a sensitive and blended way. We use a mixture of high end finishes with more affordable finishes. This creates a high-end look for mid-range budgets.

You are passionate about making the impossible possible and you aim to have fun with your clients.

Can you tell us more?

Each project is so different, we love to introduce new materials or techniques into projects but also work closely with clients budgets to have one or two WOW ‘moments’ in their home - making their project truly unique.

Talking about WOW, what is your favourite project so far?

I have three stand out favourites; Our East London Grade II Listed Townhouse, our project in Canterbury for the Channel 5 presenter Whinnie Williams (an interior designer) and our PinkHouse project, which was a UK first for the interchangeable cladding and was featured on Channel 4’s Extraordinary Extensions and George Clark’s Old House New Home.

Has being on TV changed the types of projects you work on?

We treat every client the same. Every project has the same amount of love and attention, this is why we ask clients who come to us to have a minimum construction budget of £120,000+vat

LOUD is doing fantastically well, how do you win interesting clients open to creative vision?

I started our Instagram back in 2017 [@loudarchitects], clients can see our previous work and upcoming work which is constantly evolving.

What would you say makes your team successful?

Being open with each other, and checking in regularly on the well-being and the happiness in the firm, asking regularly if there is anything that could be done better We are continuously evolving.

One last question before you go…. Where do you want LOUD to be in 5 years time?

I would like to continue what we are doing in the residential market.

I would also love to see LOUD be more in the commercial market than we are now and design a few more restaurants and bars in the city as we are a multi-sector firm.

Interview with Inner Pieces

Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project?

I believe designers bring not just a sense of style but also a wealth of knowledge about maximising a space’s potential and appealing to the intended audience. It’s important not to be just visually pleasing but also strategically executed for the best outcome.

Clients understandably often have their own personal tastes and preferences, which may not always align with what’s most marketable or profitable. Designers, on the other hand, can maintain a clear focus on the project’s objectives, whether it’s maximising the property’s value for sale or ensuring it appeals to the widest range of potential tenants.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

I don’t really have any role models specifically but I take influence from restaurants and hotels especially when I travel. Artists are also a huge influence for me. I draw inspiration from various sources and incorporate them into my projects through mood boards. Jake Arnold’s journey and growth in his business has been an inspiration as he grew up with lots of my close friends and has some amazing talent. I

find it valuable to find figures whose paths and accomplishments I admire, as they can serve as sources of motivation and guidance in my own projects.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort? It’s important to tailor the process to suit specific needs and preferences of each client and project.

Developers are usually happy for you to take the lead whereas an end user would normally want to be involved in the entire process but we love for all our clients to get involved if they take interest. I think its always nice to have a collaborative effort as the client always has the best knowledge of the site and we are there to bring that knowledge to life.

Is there a project that you are most proud of?

I take joy and commitment to delivering quality work that I feel proud of in all our projects.

One of my favourite properties was probably a warehouse we completed when I first started as I loved sourcing all the industry style pieces. I would say it was the most fun, we got to be extremely playful.

The Ambassadors Theatre

The Ambassadors Theatre opened on 5th June 1913. The theatre presented Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones starring Paul Robeson, The Mask of Virtue in 1935 which saw the West End stage debut of a 22-year-old Vivien Leigh and Spring Meeting in 1938 with Margaret Rutherford. The Conservatory was designed by the Barbican architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, and surrounds the Barbican Theatre’s fly tower, from which scenery for productions taking place on the stage six stories below is lowered into place.
