Byron Region Community College acknowledges and recognises the Bundjalung Nation, the traditional custodians from where we are based. We pay our respects to all of our region’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and towards our shared future.

G re e tings, Welcome to the latest edition of the Byron Community College brochure! We imagine you’ll find courses, workshops, or certificate programs that will genuinely rock your world. I recommend a long, deep read through the range of opportunities, and advise a look beyond what you know you might want to study. Be adventurous, open-minded and flexible, to optimise your lifelong learning within our welcoming world of practical, creative, and life-altering learning. With the assurance of over 25 years involvement with our mighty institution, I predict that along the way to new passions, hobbies and skills, you’ll meet memorable local characters, inspiring and accomplished teachers, supremely supportive staff and probably some lifelong friends. ‘Inclusion’ and ‘diversity’ are veritable buzzwords these days; at Byron Community College we’ve been practising inclusion and diversity since our humble beginnings in a defunct railway office, in 1993. People here are everything, and we invite you to come on in, find your new mob, maybe your old mob, and feel a part of this vibrant, sustainable, award-winning, and always evolving community hub. Longevity also comes to mind when we talk about Byron Community College as we farewell Lance Hopson, Senior Administration and Student Support Officer after 10 years of service to the College as he starts a new chapter of retirement.

So too for Mandy Nolan one of our longest standing tutors of almost 23 years as she recently took her final bow on comedy classes to pursue new projects. To both Lance and Mandy, we cannot thank you enough for the lives you have touched and the smiles you have brought to all the students over the years. Happy trails, Alison Pearl, President

Introd u cing Laura Kavanagh

Tutor: Certificate IV in Massage Therapy

After being introduced to massage during my natropathy degree, I have worked and taught in the field for over two decades.

I have taught massage at the College since 2019. I love seeing students gain confidence and get in in touch with their own bodies. Massage is very grounding and, for many, the course is a transformative process. Some students come with related experiences, like dance, surfing or art therapy. Everyone learns from each other and everyone gains valuable self-care and other life skills. Some go on from the course to work as a massage therapist, while others use the skills in combination with existing work. Adult education is so different to school. A lot of people don’t realise that there can be huge joy in re-engaging with learning. My main passion in my teaching is communication. I am fortunate to have had mentors who have communication as their main skill set, as this is so crucial within massage therapy. If you are considering studying massage or another course at the College, my advice is not to hesitate. The commitment can seem daunting at the outset but students quickly integrate the structure into their lifestyle. You don’t need any prior experience to get started. All you need is curiosity.

NATIONALLY RECOGNISED TRAINING

I first worked as a massage therapist during travels in Greece, where I would walk along the beach with a simple sign! I have since completed an Advanced Diploma in massage therapy, worked full-time in a clinic and taught massage at the Canberra Institute of Technology. My love of anatomy and physiology was further deepened through qualification and work as a pilates instructor.

The new Byron Centre for Permaculture was officially launched at the Byron Community College’s outdoor campus by permaculture pioneer Robyn Francis of Permaculture Australia and Djangbung Gardens and Simon Richardson, Byron Shire Mayor. As the leading provider of permaculture and sustainability courses and resources in the Northern Rivers, the success of the Byron Centre for Permaculture courses is evident within our community and across Australia by the many and inspiring student stories over the past seven years. “It is really exciting to see the Permaculture Centre officially launch here in the Byron region and being a wonderful beacon for not only Northern Rivers but for the rest of the country” says Robyn Franics. The appreciation that permaculture is more than just growing healthy nourishing food, but rather meeting all our social and environmental needs and responsibilities, including working together positively in our communities, was acknowledged by Simon Richardson.

P ER MAC ULTU RE

“The community values of the programs and the examples of learning and its practical application can be seen here the centre’s thriving permaculture site within the Mullumbimby Community Gardens.’ says Simon. “There have been some wonderful people come through the courses over the years. What gives me the greatest joy is seeing what people then go and do with that knowledge once they’re empowered with the solutions”, concludes Robyn. Expanding on the vision for the new Centre and its next steps, Richard Vinycomb, Byron Community College Director says “Community and business participation and collaboration in permaculture projects and partnerships will be vital to our future work in the Northern Rivers. We welcome hearing from anyone who would like to jointly consider new ideas and proposals.” www.byronpermaculture.org.au

In tr od u cing Peter Critch

Student: Certificate III in Permaculture

As a co-founder and compost expert for Subpod, the Byron-based composting system start-up, I help people easily understand composting and gardening. The permaculture course I finished three years ago at the Byron Community College was the springboard to this role. After finishing high school, I completed an Environmental Science degree and came out wanting to save the world. But I was naïve. So I started looking into permaculture. I moved from Melbourne within two weeks of being accepted into the course. Knowing I’d be secure with Centrelink during the year allowed me to sink my teeth into something I’d been craving. I admit I struggled for the first couple of months thinking: “I’m not learning enough” but what was really happening is that I was unlearning some of what I’d been taught. I was getting into my body rather than my mind. I was expecting it to be like university – heaps of homework and no direct guidance but the teachers showed so much care and the practical lessons at the community gardens were so great. One of the best parts of the course were the other students, who had so much zest and life. Overall, there was a sense of tight community, guidance and care. One of the key things I learned was a sense of building connections. This fits perfectly with permaculture, as the term is a big umbrella connecting water, soil, air, design and more. I decided to focus on soil. At the gardens, I met Joel Orchard, and he introduced me to the Soil Food Institute, where I did a course and internship. Then I went to Renew Fest. I was screaming ‘soil’ from the rooftop and Andrew Hayim De Vries, the inventor of Subpod, heard me. I followed him to Santos, where Subpod prototypes were set up. Since then, we’ve had two successful crowd funding campaigns and are very close to our goal of getting 20,000 people composting by 2020. Adult education gives people hope and, like it has for me, can change lives. If you are thinking of enrolling in a course, I’d encourage you to pick up the phone to have a first conversation, as it’s not only about education but the people you meet along the way. The college is like a web – the students, the teachers and the relationships. In life, that’s what gets work done. It’s from the sense of building connections that I developed during my permaculture course that I have this job now.

In tr od u cing Polly Berry

Student: Certificate III in Horticulture & 2020 Community Colleges Australia Student of the Year Award Finalist

Polly started studying with the Byron Community College when her parents were desperately trying to find something to build some much needed social skills, following on from her late diagnosis of autism in her early teenage years and her negative experience of schooling and ongoing bullying from peers. Born in Cambodia and adopted by Australian parents, a move from Queensland to NSW, saw Polly leave school at Year 9. Without her Year 10 School Certificate, many pathways were closed to her and so she started enrolling in some non-accredited art courses in 2018. Fast forward to the end of 2019, and Polly had completed 11 short courses. At each course, Polly’s confidence in social groups grew as she connected regularly with members of the community. With careful consideration and the backing of her parents, tutors and College staff, Polly enrolled in the Certificate III in Horticulture in January 2020. Starting out with a carer by her side, she resigned after a few weeks, as Polly wanted to go it alone. She became an integral part of the class and her commitment to learning and uptake of knowledge throughout has been a joy to watch. Polly was one of the first students in her class to complete and achieve her certificate of attainment. Surrounded by great tutors and mature age students, provided a safe and supportive learning environment giving her a new stability in her life. Polly’s self-awareness and resilience grew as she witnessed fellow students experiencing their own issues, which provided a previously unknown perspective for her situation. Maria speaks of the College being a life saver for her daughter, as she watches Polly’s confidence and willingness to try new things and set goals gaining momentum daily. Polly has secured a job with a local Herb Nursery that specialises in employing people living with a Disability. Maria says at the beginning of this journey they needed a win with Polly. She now calls Polly’s story ‘A Miracle’ and shares Polly’s story for other parents and young people like Polly to find inspiration and hope from it.

Tutor: Introduction to Floristry

Leena Martens

My career in floristry was inspired by a flower arrangement given to my Mum when I was a teenager. I remember thinking: “I’d like to know how to make that.” After completing Year 10, I was fortunate to be offered full-time employment in the florist shop where I had done my school work-experience. That led to a career that I love. As well as formal study early on, I benefitted from on-the job training and mentoring. Floristry is a career where you have to work your way up. I did a lot of scrubbing buckets and basic flower preparation in my early years! I am now a freelance florist as well as teaching others who share my love of flowers. There’s no experience needed for the classes I run at the College. They are an opportunity for anyone to dip their toe into floristry. Some students are keen to learn about the industry and others simply want to indulge their creativity or learn a new skill. One of the best parts of the classes is that everyone walks away with something – maybe a Christmas wreath or a hand tied bouquet – that they can proudly display in their home. I love seeing the sense of achievement students have at the end of a class. Adult education is so important in offering people the opportunity to pursue a creative skill, whether for personal interest or career prospects. For anyone considering floristry or another course, I’d say don’t hesitate. My career started from small things and is proof that you never know where an interest can lead.
