Welcome to the Autumn edition of our brochure!

The first term has flown past with lots of new students and initiatives bringing our campus alive. We now find ourselves settling into the year with some exciting new programs. These include two new courses: CUA31120 Certificate III in Visual Arts and CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health. We are thrilled to offer these courses, funded by the NSW government (based on eligibility).

The Certificate III in Visual Arts will coincide with the opening of our new Community Arts Hub, located in the building beside the college, previously and fondly known as the Chincogan Mower Shop. We have great plans for this space, including a gallery, community arts space, and artists’ working space. Our focus is on accessible and inclusive arts, and we welcome everyone to participate and enjoy being creative.

We are also excited about offering our second Youth Program following the success of the first two held at our Mullumbimby campus and at Byron Youth Centre. Approximately 20 young people participated in the program, and many are moving on to other courses focused on getting them employment. One such course is a collaboration with Novaskill, which will see the delivery a Certificate II in Construction Pathways at the Mullumbimby Campus. This is a great opportunity for our young people to explore various aspects of the construction industry in the hope that they find something they love and can move into an apprenticeship. Students aged from 15 are welcome to join us.

Another exciting addition is a Conversation Series hosted by Mark Swivel. Mark has put together an amazing program titled “Crisis? What Crisis? How History, Law and Policy can save the world.” With fantastic guest speakers, these sessions will be engaging and entertaining, held at the Drill Hall and the new Community Arts Hub at the College.

We are also happy to kick off two collaborations with SEFA and Business NSW. The EmpowerHer program is being run by SEFA for female social enterprises. The second collaboration we are launching is the Sourdough Regeneration Connection Program at the Northern Rivers region’s premier agricultural field day event – NORCO PRIMEX on May 16-18, 2024. This wonderful initiative provides an opportunity for the ecosystem of people who thrive around regenerative agriculture opportunities to come together to learn, share, create, and innovate.

On a final note, please remember we now have rolling enrolments so you can join our courses throughout the year. It’s so great to see the campus busy and being enjoyed by many. We often have our coffee caravan on a Wednesday operated by our youth, so please join us for cuppa and a chat and enjoy your beautiful Mullum campus.

Warm regards,

STUDENT STORY

Kayla Briggs

CERTIFICATE IV IN MASSAGE THERAPY 2023

Kayla was not long out of high school when she started the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy course. “Full time study in adult education is pretty different from high school so at first, I had to adjust. Part of what I had to learn to be a successful student and a good massage practitioner was also learning how to make sure I was taking care of my own wellbeing”.

“Student Support at the College helped me become more aware of that and once I became more mindful of my health, my course attendance and progress also improved. The course trainer was amazing and encouraged a real hands-on style of learning which made it so easy to retain the theory we were learning. My advice to students is to take the opportunity of studying seriously. I know for some students, fee-free courses mean it’s easy come easy go, but for me it was such an opportunity, I knew I had to take it seriously to achieve what I wanted.” Wise words! In the last days of class, Kayla celebrated her 18th birthday and now has a fantastic new job using her Certificate IV qualification at a clinic in Byron Bay.
