Mui Yuen Wong CERTIFICATE III IN INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT -2023 When Mui applied to study Certificate III in Individual Support, she knew she wanted to do something to help people. She was ready for a career change after 15 years working as a yoga teacher and helping with food catering on health retreats; both jobs that require a people centred focus. “The first 2-4 weeks were hard! So much new information to learn and I didn’t completely understand what it all looked like in real life. But I persisted and it all began to make sense. Bridget (Mui’s Trainer) was amazing and gave us lots of great examples of her own experience working in the industry. Plus, I had so much support from my classmates and the College.”

I’ll be honest, it’s not always easy! My partner and friends sometimes ask me why I want to do this work when I’m tired after a big day at work. Yes, it’s hard sometimes, but it’s also a really rewarding job. Each client is completely different and I learn so much about people and about myself each day. My other advice is that you need to be prepared for some physical work, lifting and moving because it’s part of the job and it can be quite physical job, so I’m lucky; being a yoga teacher meant this is fine for me.” Students returning to study or transitioning to a different career can sometimes experience low self-confidence. Mui’s success shows that dedication and persistence count for a lot. She now has a great new job at Northcott Disability Services that combines her newly acquired skills with her caring and compassionate nature. The increased confidence, new friends and connections she made through the course have contributed to a great outcome and we are so excited that she has started her new career.

NATION AL LY R ECO GN I SE D T R AI NI N G

Initially, Mui questioned whether she’d be psychologically ready for the work placement part of the course, but when the time came, she found the class had prepared her well. “My advice to people who want to do this job is to have an open heart. I’ve learnt to have patience and to really listen to what the client needs, even when they aren’t able to tell you directly. I’m a Buddhist so I really try to practise being there with them and making a connection.
