Welcome to the Term course brochure 4

My name is Anne Stovin, and I am the new CEO at Byron Community College. I am honoured to take on the role after the long-term tenure of past CEO Richard Vinycomb. In my short time in the position, I have been very impressed with the board, administration, trainer/tutor team and the students at the College. The organisation has a great culture and there is a high level of commitment to serve our students and community.

Byron Community College is a community asset. As a not-for-profit charity, the College is all about delivering quality and meaningful training in the community. The scope and depth of the programming is outstanding with such a wide variety of courses on offer. There is also a strong commitment to sustainability principles and practices, sharing knowledge and our goal of embedding sustainability into our operations and teaching.

The past few years for the College and team have been challenging due to the pandemic and the impact of the floods. The Mullumbimby Campus College facilities have recently returned to full operation, and we have been busy planning programming for 2024.

My initial focus as CEO has been on understanding operations and establishing important relationships with key stakeholders. As a Community College our relationships are key for identification and delivery of programs that meet community needs and expectations. There has also been a focus on increasing capacity, and I am delighted to announce that we will be moving to rolling enrolments in 2024 which means people can join our programs monthly or quarterly if they miss the beginning of the year intake.

The final focus area is on working more closely with disadvantaged groups in the community. Our priority areas for 2024 will be on youth, people with a disability, and other minority groups. Through the power of education and learning we hope to build capacity, resilience, and confidence so that students can move onto further study, into employment or pursue their passion.

I look forward to working with our team and community to deliver benefit that has far reaching impacts for individuals and community in a positive way. A huge thank you to the Board, staff and students for the warm welcome. I hope to see you at the College soon.

Study locally and take your career to the next level

Promoting social inclusion, these fully subsidised courses are a great way to connect with the local community. To enhance the quality of learning, students can only enrol in a single skill set at any given time and can explore each skill set just once.

Student Story - Certificate IV in Permaculture

Growing up on a small hobby farm on the mid north coast, my childhood was spent exploring the bush and riding my horse. I grew up with an atlas on my wall and postcards from exotic places, dreaming of adventure.

So when I turned 17 I went to Uni to study a Bachelor of Peace Studies. For the next 9 years I travelled and studied, backpacking mostly in South & Central America, India and Nepal… living the 20’s dream. Whilst doing this I finished a Masters in International and Community Development, learning to speak both Spanish and Portuguese fluently….I clearly enjoy learning.

After living in a favela in Rio de Janeiro for almost a year, and becoming disillusioned with the common idea of community development, I discovered a documentary about permaculture and the regreening of a big area in China, which really showcased to me true community development and its potential for good. So I came home to study this wonderful new concept.

I first completed a PDC (Permaculture Design Course), volunteered with more experienced permies and started working any job I could find in the horticulture industry (nurseries, landscaping, garden maintenance). In 2017 I felt I was ready to take my new found passion and knowledge to the next level and found the Certificate IV in Permaculture at Byron College!

The course content was just spot on for me and my interests. I remember struggling to get assessments in on time at Uni but for this course I willingly locked myself away for hours reading and learning, even able to hand assessments in EARLY haha. The hardest part is finding a balance between work and study. I also struggle to sit still for long periods of time…so I love the active components of this course, and being outdoors. It gave me the knowledge and confidence to tackle the challenge or running my own business and making the dream of an income from permaculture possible.

If you have a dream or an interest, follow it. Courses are also a great way of finding out what our interests are! I am living my goals. I make a comfortable living from my passion. I continue to be challenged with new projects and work, doing work that brings me great joy. Turns out I’ve made a ‘career’ out of it… Everything has happened as it should, and things only get better.

Thinking about studying? Do it. Train your brain! Learn something new! Stimulation like that is so important and can be so much fun.
