THANK YOU FANS

JOHN BOLLINGER

OWNER/CHIEF EXPERIENCE OFFICER

DEAR FLOCK, What a difference a year can make. On behalf of our entire team, I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for helping the Larks use FUN to make a difference this summer. Since our inception, I’ve always viewed the Larks as something bigger than baseball. I’ve dreamt that if we create memorable experiences centered around FUN, family and community, we can make a real difference in people’s lives and build a happier world. Coming out of COVID, our team believed we needed to live that mission more than ever. We took on the mantra “The POWER of FUN.” For us, that meant flocking together and using the POWER of FUN to overcome anything. And boy did you help us accomplish that. 2021 has been everything we’ve wanted and more. You helped us bring back sold out crowds, high fives and a sense of normal that we all desperately needed. Because of you, the Larks were able to give 22 returning players from our 2020 roster a chance to experience what a true Northwoods League and Larks season is all about. Every player raves about their experience in Bismarck. On top of this, your support helped produce four NWL All-Stars, a few walk off wins, and we had our highest player ever drafted in the 2021 MLB Draft (Cooper Bowman, 2019 alum, 4th Round, Chicago Cubs). Your support gave Larks employees and our 2021 intern team an experience they will never forget. 2020 was a tough year to work in sports. Our new employees and interns weren’t even sure they would have opportunities this year. But because of you, we are now 13 full time employees strong. And finally, your support helped us make the largest impact on our community to date. Whether it’s recordbreaking dollars raised through our jersey auctions, the largest food drive in North Dakota, or even helping our local Tires Plus break their oil change record (95 cars), YOU, our fans, are using FUN to make a difference right here in our backyard. Ultimately, your support has helped this dream come true. The Larks are more than just a baseball team. Together we are using FUN to make a difference and there is so much more ahead. Normal never sounded so good this summer, but the word normal has never been a part of our vocabulary. As we head into 2022 and beyond, know that the Larks ownership and team are committed to investing our resources and time into building the best experience possible for our fans. So thank you again for your continued support and an amazing season. Let’s continue to use FUN to make a difference! Sincerely,

John Bollinger Owner / Chief Experience Officer Bismarck Larks

RHP 6-2 BY JAMISON BROWN Nate Boyle has played for 5 different colleges in 5 years. “I was a late bloomer in the sport and was not highly recruited out of high school, but I really hit my stride in college by taking the junior college route” Boyle said. “The juco route is a program designed to help high school athletes extend their baseball careers into college.” Boyle has played in Ohio, Illinois, Mississippi, Virginia, Tennessee and now North Dakota. “Of all the teams I have played for, my best memories come from playing for the Bull Moose and the Larks,” Boyle said.

HOMETOWN FARMERSVILLE, OHIO

Boyle played for the Bismarck Bull Moose last year. He says he built a great relationship with Mitch [Gallagher] and Joey [Cooper], which led him back to Bismarck for another season. “I enjoyed my time in Bismarck last summer,” Boyle said. “I just couldn’t wait to get back out here to play this summer.” Boyle is currently 1-1 on the season with a 6.19 ERA. He’s collected 16 strikeouts in 16 innings as of July 27.

HIDDEN HOMETOWN HEROES LAILA NEHLS & HAIDEN FARIS

Laila and Haiden are best friends. Their friendship began in kindergarten and has continued to grow the last six years. They have formed an unbreakable bond and despite continual changes, they have been able to enjoy their school lunch together every day, which is the highlight of both of their days. Both girls learn from each other and encourage each other as they grow. Laila sees Haiden simply as her friend, helping and supporting her in any way she can. Haiden’s friendship is rewarding for Laila, just on its own terms. “It makes me feel special knowing that someone else cares about me too and I know that I care about her,” says Laila. Laila goes out of her way to plan around Haiden’s needs, not because she has a disability, but because Haiden is her friend, ensuring she will be included in things like birthday parties. Laila also holds Haiden to the same standards she holds everyone else, not lowering the bar, and encouraging her to be her best. She cheers on Haiden and celebrates with her when she accomplishes something great. Haiden is a determined and spunky girl who has overcome so many obstacles. Despite these struggles, Haiden is still cheerful and optimistic, always going out of her way to be friendly and make other people happy. Even though speaking is not easy for her, she is always mindful of saying please and thank you. Haiden has a remarkable presence that makes everyone she meets smile. “Haiden definitely lights up any room she walks into,” says Kari, Laila’s mom. The friendship of these two extraordinary girls is an example of true love and is an example of hope for the future. “So much can be learned from these two remarkable kids who think they are just being kids while in reality they are leaving a huge impact on the world around them,” Kari said.

A SURVIVOR

WITH A SMILE In July of 2020, Lilah Newton was visiting her grandma when she came down with a bacterial infection. Her grandma took her to see a doctor who prescribed antibiotics for treatment. When Lilah’s mom picked her up, she still wasn’t feeling better, so she went back to the doctor’s office. Then Lilah was admitted to the hospital and put on fluids along with more antibiotics. Through a series of lab tests, Lilah’s results showed she had developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) from her infection. This meant that the small blood vessels in her kidneys were becoming inflamed and damaged. Lilah was then flown to two different hospitals as her condition worsened. She started receiving dialysis and during one of her sessions, she had a seizure and hemorrhagic stroke. The hemorrhagic stroke was caused by a ruptured blood vessel in her brain. To stop the bleeding, she underwent immediate surgery before she was put in a medically induced coma and placed on a ventilator for 22 days while she battled brain swelling. Lilah stayed in the pediatric intensive care unit for 39 days and inpatient rehabilitation for 46 days. Although she has not yet regained full use of her left side, Lilah has made huge strides in her recovery and continues to go to physical, occupational and speech therapy three times a week. Through it all, Lilah has had a positive attitude and an infectious smile. Sanford Health and the Bismarck Larks would like to honor Lilah and her family for their bravery and heart throughout Lilah’s journey.

Having a personal attachment to the team and being emotionally invested in the games. Our two young boys love the players and look up to them as older brothers. We’re excited to follow them throughout their career. We also enjoy building relationships with other host families and being a part of a community WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF A LARKS GAME?

The actual game itself, along with the food and the electric atmosphere. My kids love participating in the games and playing in the bounce house. Every aspect about a Larks game is great for the family. HOW DO YOU MAKE PLAYERS EXPERIENCES UNIQUE AS A HOST FAMILY?

Learning about their interests and hobbies has been very educational. Their interests led to getting the boys golf passes to go golfing with them. However, even though we enjoy their company, we value their personal space and let them come and go as they please. Zac and Chelsae Flurer are in their first season as a Larks host family, hosting Ryan Curran and Ben Teel. From the Northwoods League’s inception in 1994, generous families and individuals have warmly offered their homes and provided welcoming food and lodging for student-athletes traveling from far and wide. This has created an immediate “booster club” and a dedicated fan base within each Northwoods League community. HOME RUN DERBY CHAMPS

BEEFY

BOYS Every Saturday, the Larks big hitters show off their power by competing for the title of beefiest hitter. We call these boys the Beefy Boys. Repping yellow sleeveless uniforms adorned with a black angus cow, these boys really know how to get the ball moo-ving.

CHECK OUT THE 2021 BEEFY BOYS HOME RUN DERBY CHAMPIONS Jarrett Bickel | Palm Beach State College | SCORE: 45 points Bickel won the first Beefy Boys Home Run Derby when he defeated Ryan Curran with a home run on his last swing to secure the victory. Bickel is an infielder for the Larks, and is hitting .207 with 17 hits this season. FUN FACT: Bickel enjoys fishing in his spare time.

Derek Shoen | Univ. of Mary | SCORE: 42 points Shoen won the third Beefy Boys Home Run Derby, putting on an unprecedented power display to take home the win. Shoen provides the pop in the Larks lineup, as he leads the team in RBIs (29) and has hit 2 home runs this season. FUN FACT: Derek grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota.

Blake Gallagher | Minot State Univ. | SCORE: 39 points Gallagher won the second Beefy Boys Home Run Derby in a battle of the pitchers. His 39 points were seven points better than his next closest opponent, a beefy victory for the Larks pitcher. Gallagher has never hit in a game for the Larks, but we think coach should give him an at-bat after his performance... FUN FACT: Blake is a native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada and has been living in the United States for 11 years. Seth Brewer | Northern State | SCORE: 35 points Brewer put on a clinic in the fourth Beefy Boys Home Run Derby, once hitting 6 home runs in a span of 8 pitches during the derby. He evened the score between the pitchers and the hitters at 2-2, and like Gallagher, is providing plenty of reasons for why he needs to hit in a game this season. FUN FACT: Brewer played in 2011 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

STEM ALL-STARS

Every summer, the Larks make it their mission to recognize six all-star students who exhibit hard work, dedication and a commitment to using STEM to serve their school and their community. Students are nominated by their teacher for their love of learning. Students in grades 1-12 attending North Dakota schools are eligible to be nominated by their teachers, and six are selected as STEM all-stars. Congratulations to the 2021 STEM All-Stars! Learn more about our all-stars by reading their stories below!

THE 2021 STEM ALL STARS Kallen Albers | Center Stanton Elementary School | 6th Grade “Scientists are noted for their careful observations, wild experiments, and close questioning. As a 6th grade student, Kallen has demonstrated that he is not only well on his way to being a scientist, but already is,” Ms. Gusewelle wrote in the nomination of her student. After completing his assignments, Kallen enjoys tinkering with whatever he has in his desk to create something new or to create something differently. Kallen not only demonstrates the 4 C’s – Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity – but has an excitement and enthusiasm for them. Mackenzie Johnson | Century High School (Bismarck) | 12th Grade At the top of her class with a diverse set of interests and accomplishments, Mackenzie is a driven and focused student. “Mackenzie has been a leader in Century High School’s Science Olympiad program for all four of the years she has been a student at the school, and has won first place in most of her events over the four years of competing,” noted her anatomy teacher, Mr. Johnson. Mackenzie has completed seven AP-level courses throughout her high school career and is looking forward to the next step in her education. Her college goals are to become a forensic pathologist, one who works on cadavers to determine the cause of death and/or pathology of the body systems to determine the cause of certain disorders and diseases.

Larks Program Edition Nine | 45

THE 2021 STEM ALL STARS Braden Ficklin | Mandan Middle School | 8th Grade Braden’s critical thinking skills and creativity were highlighted while learning HTML during a web design unit. He was able to find and use code that was not taught in class to make his website really stand out. Braden is looking into business opportunities, designing a new website, and dabbling with video game design. In the classroom, he often is a great help to his fellow students. According to his teacher Mr. Dossenko, “Braden’s ability to work in groups and help students who need a different point of view to learn is a real gift.” Classmates agree, with one noting, “It was like having two teachers in the classroom.” Lydia Wolfe | Mandan Middle School | 7th Grade Lydia has a deep fascination for how things work and may enjoy a career in engineering. She has a strong motivation to learn and develop an understanding of topics, and shows a wonderful depth of understanding and the ability to connect classroom concepts to real-life scenarios. “Lydia works well with classmates and lab group members,” observed nominating teacher Mr. Long. “She communicates and collaborates so naturally to the point that each member in her group feels like a valued teammate and contributor to the learning process.” Kiara Irizarry | Mandan Middle School | 7th Grade Born in Puerto Rico, Kiara’s family moved to the United States when she was eight years old and in second grade. “While Kiara does well in all her classes, her favorite is science. She has a real passion for it,” according to her teacher Ms. Dagman. Kiara is very inquisitive and able to apply new information to other areas of existing knowledge. She asks insightful questions in class and then works out the answers on her own or in a small group. Her teachers agree she is impressive when it comes to how hard of a worker she is and that she will be an asset to any class or community she is a part of. David Bettenhausen | Myhre Elementary School (Bismarck) | 4th Grade David puts the 4C’s to use every day in his classroom and is often found assisting his fellow students. His class created a map of tourist attractions in North Dakota and coded an Ozobot to travel to each place. “Many students had a hard time coding their Ozobot, and David went to other students and helped them with the coding,” noted classroom teacher Ms. Hjelmstad. David enjoys going to STEM camp and creating things; he is going to be working on a free little library for his yard.

BEHIND THE LENS

TOM

STROMME Tom Stromme just might have photographed everyone in town. The Bismarck Tribune photojournalist thinks that’s the reason Larks fans voted for him in the Media Madness Bobblehead Bracket last March. “The whole thing surprised me,” said Stromme, who has been photographing BismarckMandan for 33 years. Stromme can often be found on the sidelines of Larks games and other sporting events, capturing the action for Tribune readers. He’s recorded some big moments in North Dakota history, such as the recent Dakota Access Pipeline protests, 18 legislative sessions and record-breaking droughts and floods. Stromme is known for doing what it takes to get the photo. While covering the recent wildfire that prompted residents of Medora to evacuate, he gained access to the fire zone by agreeing to deliver sandwiches to emergency responders. During the 1997 Grand Forks flood, Stromme got help processing his photos using water from a hotel pool to develop film in a bathtub. That same year, he hitchhiked during a blizzard to get what became an iconic photo of vehicles buried in the snow at Kirkwood Mall. Stromme has had photos published by national media outlets including the New York Times and The Associated Press, including a recent photo of coronavirus testing at the Bismarck Event Center and a 2009 photo of a National Guard helicopter landing on the frozen Missouri River to break up an ice jam that threatened Bismarck. Stromme, a Navy veteran, is active in the local community, including volunteering for the Huff Hills Ski Patrol and the Bismarck Historical Society board of directors. He and his wife, Kari, have three children, Thomas, Liv and Andrew. Stromme says he’s a fan of how well the Larks have become integrated in the Bismarck-Mandan community. “They reach out to everybody, from the little kids to the seniors,” he said.
