ACC is one of 529 non-profits in the Sacramento region that participated in the 2nd annual Big Day of Giving on May 5, 2015. The Big Day is an online 24-hour giving challenge brought to the region by the local community foundations, including the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Exceptional Rehabilitation and Nursing Services

By Melanie Segar, Care Center Administrator

To reflect our focus on rehabilitation the Nursing Home Committee and the ACC Board approved a name change from ACC Nursing Home to ACC Care Center. Getting people back home after a hospital stay is something we do well - over the past four years our return to home rate has grown by 400%. Our Care Center has been named as one of the best skilled nursing facilities in the state by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Health Services Advisory Group, and the state of California. We have maintained a 5 star rating on the CMS Nursing Home Compare website for the last two years.

You Can Help ACC Go Green! ACC Senior Services (ACC) now offers an electronic version of the ACC Newsletter. If you are interested in receiving the ACC e-Newsletter, please send a message to Kimberly Feng, ACC Fund Development Assistant, at kfeng@accsv.org . Be sure to include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address in your message so that we can match your request to the correct record in our mailing list. Once you are registered to receive the ACC e-Newsletter, you may choose to opt out at any time by sending us another email to let us know. ACC Senior Services does not sell our mailing list or share it with other organizations.

In my mind, the greatest asset at ACC Senior Services is our dedicated group of volunteers. It is well known that volunteerism is the foundation of our culture at ACC. Each year hundreds of committed volunteers have provided ACC with the precious gift of time to support ACC programs, services, and special events since the beginning days when ACC started as a neighborhood senior center. What’s more astonishing is the number of volunteers that comprise the roster of the ACC Volunteer Hall of Fame which recognizes more than 20 years of volunteer service at ACC. At the April Volunteer Luncheon, Pam Fong and Lorna Fong were recognized for their years of service and inducted into the Hall of Fame which now lists 83 inductees. There are many opportunities to volunteer at annual ACC fundraising events such as the February Crab Feed, the May Golf Tournament, the September Car Center Fundraiser, and the November Craft & Bake Sale at Greenhaven Terrace. At any of these events, you will surely recognize a friend or family member who volunteers. While the fundraising events help raise funds to support the many services that benefit the community, there are many more ways that volunteers directly impact our service program clients and the residents at Greenhaven

Terrace and the Care Center (nursing home). Most recently at the ACC Campus, you are now greeted as you enter by a volunteer member of the newly formed ACC Welcome Center Team. Members of the team help staff the welcome center to make our new campus an inviting place to visit. The ACC Rides program transports older adults and their caregivers to medical appointments, dialysis, social day programs, grocery stores, and to run errands. Over 100 caring volunteer drivers and escorts provide more than 4,000 round-trip rides a month. Through the Friendly Visitors program, volunteers allow family caregivers an opportunity to take a much needed break and offer friendly companions to seniors or family members with disabilities in the family home. At Greenhaven Terrace, Joyce Sahara and Nancy Ito host a monthly arts and crafts activity, and Wayne Shimizu leads “Brain Fitness” classes. Other volunteers help with various tasks to coordinate fun events and holiday potluck meals for residents. There are dinner socials hosted by the “Kids of GT Residents” that are extremely popular with over 40 residents participating. Another popular activity is the ukulele lessons taught to the assisted living residents by volunteer instructor, Glenn Watanabe.

For all our residents at the Care Center, volunteers provide musical performances, concerts, oneto-one visits, nature walks around the Care Center grounds, tai chi classes, music therapy, massage therapy, pet therapy, and special evening activities such as drive-in movie night and casino night. Our volunteers at the Care Center are a unique group that includes high school and college students, retirees, church groups, Chinese speaking groups, musical groups, residents’ family members, and staff members during their off hours. Collectively, these volunteers reach out to build personal relationships with the residents and their family. In addition to the ACC volunteers, let’s not forget the 500 volunteers at Meals on Wheels by ACC who provided 4,877 seniors with nutritious meals delivered to homes or served at 23 cafés throughout Sacramento and West Placer counties in 2014. I want to express my appreciation to all the volunteers for the thousands of hours of precious time gifted to ACC. If you have yet to make a gift of time and would like information about volunteer opportunities with ACC, please contact Khonnie Lattasima, Volunteer Manager at 916-394-6399, ext. 143 or by e-mail at klattasima@accsv.org.

ACC Celebrates National Volunteer Appreciation Week at Annual Volunteer Luncheon Every April, ACC celebrates the work of 600+ wonderful volunteers who help keep our programs and services running in tip-top shape! Guests Get Crackin’ at 7th Annual ACC Crab Feed By Mandy Hwang, Fund Development Assistant

With endless trays of crab and a wave of “aloha,” the 7th Annual ACC Crab Feed was another booming success. Before the February 28 feast, masses of people milled about with looks of hungry excitement on their faces at the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation. Boisterous Hawaiian-themed decorations and compelling aromas filled the room in anticipation of the meal ahead. Before dinner, guests strolled around the facility perusing the various home-baked goods at the bake sale table while others quenched their thirsts at the bar. Those who were feeling fortunate tried their luck at the Last Person Standing table for a chance at $1,000 or took a chance in the raffle to win one-of-a-kind Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings memorabilia. The Last Person Standing boards sold out incredibly early in the evening this year. General Lorna Fong once again announced the numbers, an entertaining event in its own right. With two boards this year, the chances of winning doubled, and the final four contestants decided to split their winnings equally, each walking away with $250 -congratulations to our winners! As in previous years, the bake sale coordinated by Jean Shiomoto was as popular as ever. With a vast variety of treats home made by numerous volunteer bakers, every sweet tooth was surely satisfied. For parched guests, eyecatching, vivid colors adorned the bar while behind it volunteers, led by Don Morishita, served up beer, wine, and craft cocktails in addition to non-alcoholic selections. But the real star of the night was, as always, Don Lee’s signature ginger garlic crab. The murmuring voices that once filled the room faded and were replaced by the sound of cracking crustaceans. Diners feasted on round after round of mouth-watering crab and sides of fried rice, pork spare ribs, and salad. At the end of the night, guests left with full bellies and smiling faces. This year’s event could not have happened without the hard work of co-chairs Lori Lee, Debbie Seid, and the rest of the Crab Feed Committee. ACC would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to the SASF staff and the many volunteers who helped with this event for their amazing support and cooperation. It is because of their tireless work and tremendous efforts, that the 2015 ACC Crab Feed was such a successful event. Thank you to everyone who joined us for another incredible evening, and we’ll see you all again next year!

Does Your Health Plan Cover ACC Care Center?

As a longtime supporter of ACC I always thought that if my wife or I ever needed to go to a facility for rehabilitation I would be able to go to our Nursing Home. I was surprised to learn that, since I have the Kaiser Advantage plan for my Medicare and Kaiser does not have a contract with ACC, I do not have that choice. There are many things I really like about Kaiser but this is not one of them. I am planning to write to Kaiser Member Services to ask them to correct this situation - I hope you will join me. Please email your letter to Kaiser Member Services at mscc@kp.org. Be sure to include your name, address, phone number, and Kaiser member number. Tell them that, as a Kaiser member, you want to be able to go to ACC Care Center for rehabilitation if the need arises. Let’s work together to make sure we have the right to choose the best nursing home if we ever need help getting back on our feet! Howard Harris, ACC Board Member Page 4

Cloudy With a Chance Of…FORE! By Mandy Hwang, Fund Development Assistant

Golfers hit the links and teed off at the 9th Annual ACC Golf Tournament on May 14, 2015! Despite the rainy forecast in the preceding days, Mother Nature surprised everyone with a whisper of sunshine throughout the day and conditions were dry and pleasant. More than 35 teams drove, chipped and putted their way through 18 holes at Teal Bend Golf Course. Golfers were greeted in the early morning with warm smiles and a stylish new ACC golf sweater in addition to tee prizes provided by Golden 1 Credit Union, Lewis and Associates, and our very own ACC Greenhaven Terrace. Team High Gross, consisting of General Lorna Fong, Beverly Shimizu, Wendy Kagiyama-Yee, and Carol Kudow, lived up to their name as the highest grossing team for the ninth consecutive year. Congratulations to all of the golf winners of the day (see page 15 for results)!

The lunch and awards ceremony was hosted at the new ACC Campus for the very first time. Food was served in the new spacious community room, and golfers and other attendees socialized on the lively patio outside. L&L Hawaiian BBQ provided the mouth-watering lunch of barbeque chicken, kalua pork, macaroni salad, saimin, and lolo freezes. Diners were also treated to fresh fruit and delectable homemade desserts contributed by volunteer bakers. This year’s golf tournament was surely a hole-in-one, and it could not have happened without the commitment of co-chairs Don Morishita and Brian Chin as well as all of the dedicated individuals who serve on the golf committee. A special thank you to our sponsors and donors – only with their support can ACC continue to succeed and thrive. For a full list of sponsors, see page 15. We would also like to thank our assiduous volunteers and all the staff members who devoted their time and efforts towards making this event another success. Thank you to everyone who participated and joined us for another thrilling event. We hope to see you back next year!

ACC Announces our Capital Campaign ACC Senior Services has recently embarked upon a capital campaign. The campaign supports our efforts to implement our Master Plan, designed to ensure ACC’s ability to meet the needs of each older individual and family the varying points of the aging cycle – whether it’s to support independence, living with a family caregiver, assisted living, or skilled nursing. The three-phase plan includes: • The licensed fully functional Assisted Living facility at ACC Greenhaven Terrace; • The new ACC Senior Services Campus with expanded classroom space and consolidated administrative and program areas; and • The renovation of resident rooms at the ACC Care Center (formerly named the ACC Nursing Home). Looking ahead, privacy concerns of the next wave of seniors indicates three-and four-bed rooms sharing a bath are less likely to be care environments of choice in the next three or five years. We want to assure that ACC’s legacy facility continues to adapt and support

the quality of care and quality of life that sustains and further contributes to the stellar reputation of the ACC Care Center. ACC has taken the initiative and has invested its own funds and credit in good faith to jumpstart phases I and II. The Board of Directors have identified a “capacity building campaign” focused on raising funds to support “where the need is greatest” to shore up the holes in the continuum of services for all seniors in our community. The campaign will offset costs already incurred, and allow us to ensure that we retain the highest standard of care in our skilled nursing center. The campaign is off to a strong start, with 100% board participation, and employees donating more than $73,000 toward the efforts. We are deeply grateful for those who have supported the campaign, and invite you to call Brenda Page at (916) 503-0294 for a tour of the new facilities or to learn more about how you can help support ACC.

What’s New at ACC? By Susan Sarinas, Program Manager

It’s been four months since ACC’s Lifelong Learning & Wellness Program (LLWP) moved into the new campus. When we first moved, it seemed as though we had too much room, more than we could ever fill. Along with additional classrooms, we now have dedicated rooms for music classes and computers, a demonstration kitchen, and a large community room. Our new location has brought us many new participants and many previous participants that had stopped coming have returned, as well. Since January, we have 72 new participants and the number of students in our classes has also increased. In addition, previous instructors have returned and we are attracting new instructors to ACC. Some of the new offerings this year include bonsai, origami, hula, keyboard, Spanish, pickleball, and a walking club. This summer we are looking forward to tap dance, yoga for those with cancer, evening tai chi, Chinese calligraphy and painting, and self-defense for seniors. We will also have trips to the Marysville Peach festival and to the town of Locke.

Another new focus this year is on health, wellness, and personal safety. Last quarter, we had workshops on nutrition, hearing and vision loss, as well as emergency preparedness and financial exploitation. This summer, look for special workshops on Medicare fraud and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design, and Better Choices, Better Health Workshops. September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month and we have two Fall Prevention workshops scheduled and we hoping to have a third special Fall Prevention mini event. If there is a class that you would like to see, please feel free to give us your suggestions. In addition, we will be doing our annual LLWP survey in June. If you like our new campus, enjoy our new classes, we would love get your feedback. Many of the changes you see have come from suggestions made by you, our students. Also, if you have a skill or ability that you would be willing to teach others, please contact Anna Su at (916) 393-9026, ext. 330, classes@accsv.org.

We celebrated the day with a special “BIG Day Thank You Event.” We had a variety of free classes for BIG Day
