Rhonda Halushka talks to Anna Su from ACC Programs about a new class.

By Linda Revilla Mike Oyama has had many different occupations during his work career. He drove trucks for a while, cooked in restaurants in Waikiki and on Maui, and retired from the UC Davis Primate Center after more than 20 years. A constant in his life, however, has been music. Rhonda Halushka grew up in San Francisco’s Richmond district surrounded by Asian kids. She fell in love with Japanese culture and moved to Japan after college to teach English. She learned weaving, dyeing, Kimono making, book binding, and how to conduct a tea ceremony. And she learned how to speak Japanese.

Mike and Rhonda are different in many ways, but there’s one thing they have in common — ACC Senior Services. After retiring in 2014, Mike says he was “floating” for a few months. “Then I got the ACC News in Mike Oyama is an ACC frequent flyer. the mail and noticed all of the things going on.” Mike’s first class with ACC was acrylic painting with Zimei. Kevin was the Executive Director of Rainbow Community Center of Contra Costa. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director for California Coalition for Youth where he and his team successfully advocated for $10M to be put into the State budget to support homeless youth in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Los Angeles and San Diego. “Our search for a new Executive Director yielded over three hundred applications,” says MOW Board President Brian Chin. “Fourteen candidates interviewed for the top position. Kevin stood out because he had been in non-profit leadership

It was important to find someone who had a passion for serving disadvantaged and underserved populations.” One experience that solidified Kevin’s call- Welcome on board, Kevin! ing happened while he was a program coordinator at the Solano Family Justice Center. “I saw a lot of bad things happen to people including an elderly client who was a victim of financial abuse by another family member. A Joint Message from the CEO and Board President In early April, ACC undertook a change in business direction with the Fund Development Department to improve operational efficiencies and donor services. To that end, ACC has appointed Ted Fong as the Interim Director of Development. As the Board President and CEO for ACC, we sincerely apologize to our donors and supporters for problems you may have encountered with donation processing and related customer service activities. Ted is focusing on improving our software configuration, reducing human errors, and getting donor acknowledgement letters out accurately and on time. He has created a bug reporting system to capture errors, omissions, and, yes, complaints. You can submit your case online at tinyurl.com/acc7070, or email Ted at tfong@accsv.org. Ted is also meeting with the various Board, Standing Committees and Special Event Committees to discuss what we want to see as the ideal donor and volunteer experience at ACC. These findings will inform the long-term direction of Fund Development at ACC and the level of funding the Department requires. On a lighter note, we would like to thank all the volunteers and donors for supporting our Big Day of Giving 2019 which raised over $50,000 on May 2nd and our 13th Annual Golf Tournament which raised over $30,000 on May 7th. We would thank Maeley Tom who starred in our epic music video “Rollin’ at ACC” and our sponsors who are listed on pages 4 and 16 of this issue.

ACC Board President Winston Ashizawa and CEO Darrick Lam

ACC was also one of the recipients at the 2nd Annual Pride of the Pocket Awards Ceremony which was held on Thursday, May 30th, at the Didion School Park. Nominated by Supervisory Patrick Kennedy, ACC was joined by other awardees which included Pocket-Greenhaven Moms Group; Friends of the Robbie Waters Library; Matsuyama Principal Judy Farina and Teacher Stephanie Berry; Pocket Little League; Lieutanant Paul Freeman; Lane Shapiro; and Friends of the Sacramento River Parkway. ACC’s head of HR Tony Waterford and our Guitar Ensemble also provided entertainment. Last but not least, the ACC Board of Directors will lead the development of a new Five-Year Strategic Plan for ACC entitled “Honoring the Past; Building for the Future.” Input will be solicited from clients, employees, volunteers, and other community stakeholders to ensure that our plan will become realistic. Thank you again for your ongoing support to help ACC with our growth and improvement on our operational efficiencies and customer services.

Helping Families with Big Transitions Over the course of many years working in assisted living and other long-term care settings, ACC Maple Tree Village Administrator Kyle Fredrickson has had numerous interactions with residents and families who struggle with making decisions regarding care and housing for their loved ones. In some cases, the parties involved are aligned, and in others, they are in conflict. In the past four months, Kyle has been working with dozens of families who are interested in ACC Maple Tree Village for assisted living and memory care services. She holds group informational sessions and also private meetings. Some people have come to her informational sessions two or three times, almost like attending a support group. “Guilt, fear and anxiety are frequent emotions families and their elders experience,” says Kyle. “As a gerontologist, elder care advocate and assisted

community,” says Kevin. “Many of our participants are house-bound and would be much worse off without us. They get very excited when we show up at their door. We get to know them like family.” Kevin replaces David Morikawa who led the organization for the past seven-plus years. Today, Meals on Wheels by ACC has 500 volunteers Page 2

Marching to Her Own Drum Beat

“My parents immigrated from Mexico. My dad was a laborer in the timber industry, and my mom worked for a linen company. I was an ESL student in grade school and the first in my family to go to college.” Yesenia Jones is the Director of Independent Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace. She has three small children and a Masters in Social Work from CSUS. She’s done so much for a person who started working at the age of 16. In 2010, she earned her A.A. degree from Cosumnes River College. Two years later, she got married, and had her first child, Brice.

“I’m here for a reason,” says Yesenia Jones.

In 2015, Yesenia started working at ACC Greenhaven Terrace as a Resident Services Manager. Being a mom and working fulltime did not dampen her desire

for more schooling. In 2015, Yesenia got accepted into Chico State’s online sociology program and had another child, Gia. “My husband is my greatest support system. We worked as a team to get things done,” she says. Yesenia graduated with her B.A. degree in 2017. Back at ACC Greenhaven Terrace, Yesenia learned about aging, psycho-social risks within the older adult population, how to conduct crisis interventions and case management skills. Thirsting for more knowledge,

Yesenia enrolled in the Masters of Social Work at CSU Sacramento while continuing to work fulltime. Donna Yee, PhD, ACC’s former CEO, was Yesenia’s field instructor. Yesenia worked with ACC’s Bridge to Healthy Families conducting client assessments and planning their care. In the second year of her Master’s program, ACC’s CEO Darrick Lam, MSW, MBA, became Yesenia’s field instructor. He mentor her on macro topics such as program development, policy, and the business side of

non-profit organizations. “Donna and Darrick didn’t have to do this for me,” says Yesenia. I guess, as trained social workers themselves, that’s what they do.” Over the years at ACC, Yesenia has learned to be transparent with her residents. “They want to know what’s happening before it happens. I mingle with them constantly” says Yesenia. Yesenia has also learned to detect changes in behavior, memory, and health status, so she can connect them with resources to help them maintain their independence. While studying for her Masters degree, Yesenia had her third child, Aria. On May 18, 2019, she graduated with her Masters in Social Work. Her parents attended the ceremony along with her workplace parents Darrick Lam and Donna Yee.

Social workers unite. Donna Yee and Darrick Lam watched Yesenia get her MSW from CSU Sacramento.

ACC Operations Update By Melanie Segar My first year as ACC’s Chief Operations Officer has been a busy and productive one! Since breaking ground last September on Maple Tree Village, ACC’s new 102 unit Assisted Living and Memory Care facility, progress has been consistent (despite all the rain!) and we are now about 70% completed. Many of you have gotten a chance to meet Kyle Fredrickson, our Maple Tree Village Administrator, who joined ACC in January. Kyle has been working with Ted Fong to develop a Priority Waiting List for folks interested in moving into MTV. The response has been overwhelming and we now have over 100 people on the list! For more information or to be added to the list, please email KFredrickson@ accsv.org. We look forward to the Grand Opening this Fall – watch for more information. If you have not been to Greenhaven Terrace lately you will notice lots of great changes

when you visit. Yesenia Jones, the Independent Living Director, has been working on refurbishing the common areas including the community room, kitchen, conference room, and the library. These changes have been met with enthusiasm and positive feedback by our residents, with some even donating to the effort. When you stop by, make sure to congratulate Yesenia on graduating with her Masters in Social Work degree this May! ACC Care Center continues to be one of the top performing skilled nursing facilities in California under the direction of Tamara Kario, who was promoted to the Administrator position in January. The Care Center has consistently maintained a Five Star rating since 2013 on the CMS Nursing Home Compare, which measures all of the skilled nursing facilities in the US. In addition, ACC just received a Quality Award Supplemental Payment from the State of

California in the amount of $217,000. This award is given to facilities with the highest quality outcomes who take care of MediCal residents. The money will be used to continue to enhance quality by recognizing our hard working staff and making upgrades to our equipment and physical plant. There has been much in the news lately about the difficulty skilled nursing facilities are facing – high cost of wages, aging facilities and equipment, ever increasing regulation – and some will not continue to operate. Care Center remains committed to serving the community with quality and compassion. With our mission driven focus we have been able to maintain 97% occupancy this year when many are struggling. With our attention to quality, we have been able to maintain positive cash flow when others have not. This is not to say that it is not a difficult time in our history, but your continuing support has made it possible. Thank you for your partnership and we look forward to what comes next.

ACC to Host Free RMD Workshop on June 19 You’re getting closer to the age of 70 and you keep hearing the term “RMD.” But what does that term “RMD” mean and, more specifically, what does it mean for you? If you’ve participated in a qualified retirement plan you cannot enjoy the tax-deferred

earnings indefinitely. Eventually, you must begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) starting in the year you turn 70½ - a gift from the IRS that you may not be happy about. Failure to do so may result in a hefty 50% penalty on the amount that should have been withdrawn! If you have more questions than answers about RMDs, please join financial advisors Esther Aw, CLTC & CAP, and Mark J. Pratt, CLTC, on

Wednesday, June 19, 2019 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm ACC Senior Services 7334 Park City Drive, Sacramento

Join our informative discussion about RMDs, including about how to maximize benefits to you and potentially minimize your taxes. Hosted by ACC Fund Development Committee, this workshop will help you understand what RMD really means. Seating is limited so reserve your seat today. Register online at tinyurl.com/acc6554 or call Anna Su at (916) 393-9026 ext. 330. The speakers are: Esther Aw, CLTC & CAP, is a financial advisor with over 22 years of experience of holistic financial planning in the arena of protection, accumulation, retirement, distribution, preservation and legacy of wealth management. She started her practice in the South and East Bay and has lived in Sacramento region since 1997. Mark J. Pratt, CLTC, is also a financial advisor with more than 30 years of investment management, including retirement planning, wealth accumulation and preservation, and portfolio management. He has a built a solid practice with a diverse client base spanning in the Sacramento and Bay areas to as far north as Redding California. Esther and Mark are qualifying and life members of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), the Premier Advisory Association of Financial Professionals. They are also registered investment advisers, offering investment advisory services through NYLIFE Securities, LLC, and Eagle Strategies, LLC.

Big Day of Giving Raises $50,000 Hundreds of donations poured into ACC on May 2nd, Big Day of Giving. All the money went to ACC Programs which offers social services, classes, and transportation for older adults and their caregivers. “We rely on donations to cover our teaching and staffing costs,” says Program Director Linda Revilla. “I want to thank all of our donor and sponsors for another successful Big Day of Giving.” Highlights of the day included food, live

entertainment, demonstrations, and a craft fair. The ACC Care Center staff dazzled with a special dance number during a segment called “ACC’s Got Talent.” Nami Berg and Darrick Lam graced the dance floor with a perfectly executived waltz. It was matched by a beautifully staged fashion show featuring employees in their native attire.

Grand Opening of Jimmie R. Yee Park By Donna Yee It is no surprise that the Southgate Recreation and Park District recently named a new park for Jimmie R. Yee on April 27, 2019. It is also no surprise that so many family, friends, and colleagues showed up to honor him. What is surprising is continuing to learn more about all of the ways that Jimmie has fostered a sense of community and generated goodwill throughout the community. During my tenure as CEO at ACC Senior Services, I never had time to ask what Jimmie had “done for us lately” because he was constantly clearing the way for ACC’s building projects, helping families find needed care, and assuring programs that received local funds were accountable and fairly treated by officials.

Surrounded by friends and family, Jimmie and his wife Mary prepare to cut the ceremonial ribbon at Jimmie R. Yee Park.

County Supervisor Don Notolli, Honorable Jimmie R. Yee and General Manager of Southgate Recreation and Park District Ward Winchell.

Yes, he was the County Supervisor for the 2nd District (2007-2015), yes, he was the 53rd Mayor of Sacramento (1999-2000), and yes, he served on the City Council representing the 4th District (1992-1999), a longtime public official who sorted through knotty problems of local government, and (sometimes) the family and business problems of his constituents. I say we should keep piling on the accolades and recognition of Jimmie’s talents and accomplishments. Congratulations again, Jimmie, for so many jobs well done!!

ACC Job Training Finds a Great Match By Dave Lin Kaley Wong had been out of work for 10 years when she decided she wanted to make a change in her life. Tired of being at home and wanting to help support her family, Kaley enrolled in the ACC’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) in order to find a regular job. When ACC started SCSEP in February of 2017, Kaley was assigned as a clerk at a Goodwill Store. While the work there kept her busy and she learned a great deal about retail, Kaley was looking for something that was a better fit not only for her language skills (she is bilingual in English and Cantonese), but focused more on caregiving. The ACC SCSEP staff worked with her to redefine her job career goals and found a match for Kaley at our own Care Center in Activities. Kaley began her assignment in April of 2018. This turned out to be a great match. The Care Center needed help with keeping their residents active and stimulated, and her ability to communicate in Cantonese really helped her bond with many of the clients there. Kaley helps clients with entertainment, physical activities and socializing. As the months passed, Kaley developed great relationships with the residents and they soon came to really look forward to and enjoy their time with her. Kaley really also www.accsv.org

appreciated being able to use her native language to help as well. Eleven months later, the ACC Care Center decided to make Kaley a permanent member of their Activities staff, and both Kaley and management could not be happier. Activity Director Debbie Williams described Kaley as an easy person to train because she was already a perfect fit for the role,

especially given her language ability. Add to that the fact that the clients really love Kaley, hiring her was an easy decision to make. Kaley is grateful for the opportunity that SCSEP offered her and would like all older people to know that even though it may be challenging, you can find work again and you just have to stay positive.

Kaley Wong helped City Councilmember Rick Jennings celebrate Lam Luc’s 100th birthday at ACC Care Center last year. Tamara Kario looks on.

ACC’s CEO Darrick Lam as he presents a workshop entitled: You Could Be Next: How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Medicare Fraud & Scams Friday, June 14, 2019 • 10:30 am to 11:30 am at ACC Greenhaven Terrace Community Room, and at On June 15, 2019, communities in the US and all over the world will sponsor events to highlight solutions to this systemic social challenge. As Americans, we believe in justice for all. Yet we fail to live up to this promise when we allow older members of our society to be abused or neglected. Older adults are vital, contributing members of American society, and their maltreatment diminishes all of us. Just as we have confronted and addressed the social issues of child abuse and domestic violence, so too can we find solutions to address issues like elder abuse, which also threatens the well-being of our community. The policies and practices in this nation make it hard for older adults to stay involved with and connected to our communities as

they age. As a result, they are more likely to experience social isolation, which increases the likelihood of abuse and neglect. We can design stronger societal supports to keep our older adults connected and protect them from abuse, whether financial, emotional, physical or sexual. When we address a root cause, like social isolation, we also make it less likely that people will neglect themselves. Older adults who are socially connected and protected from harm are less likely to be hospitalized, less likely to go into nursing homes and less likely to die. We can and must also create healthier and safer living environments for older adults, including their homes, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. To participate in this conversation, join

• 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at ACC Campus Community Room Pre-registration required. Call 916-503-5807. It is up to all of us to prevent and address elder abuse. Talk to our leaders at the local, state and national levels to advocate for elder abuse prevention and intervention programs. Be a friendly visitor to an older person living in our community. Report concerns to our local Adult Protective Services program or law enforcement. In the meantime, you can get more information about how to make a difference by visiting the National Center on Elder Abuse https://ncea.acl.gov or by calling the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 to explore local community services and support.

calligraphy and took many wellness workshops with Jan Polin. Then he joined the Folk Guitar Club. After a few months, he started focusing his energy into music. He started taking an ukulele class with Loretta Lew, and joined the Pocket Pickers. He also joined the ACC Show Stoppers choir. Rhonda took a different path. She became a school teacher and spent the last 17 years teaching science at James Rutter Middleschool in South Sacramento. Her mother died of Alzheimers, so when Rhonda retired, she made a conscious choice to keep her brain and body active. She wanted to relearn Japanese which she had not used for decades. A friend recommended ACC, and she never stopped going. “I took teacher Nora’s Mike Oyama (far left) has been playing with the ACC Pocket Pickers for several years.

Japanese class as a refresher and, wow, it all came back. As a retiree, I had time to pursue new things, and that’s what ACC offered. In fact, the only reason why I remain in Sacramento is because of ACC.” On Wednesday, Rhonda volunteers for Meals on Wheels by ACC at the Japanese United Methodist Church. “I see these women there who are so vibrant and active in Page 6

their 80s and 90.” At the end of her shift she records around 8,000 steps on her Fitbit. At age 67, Mike Oyama gets around too. He joined other music groups in the community including the Chinese Community Church Ukulele Fellowship, Ohana Dance Group, and the Fremont Presbyterian Church choir. Mike likes coming to ACC because, “everybody is friendly and you learn a lot of things. I have made a lot of friends here. At 66, Rhonda describes this phase of her life as a “rebirth.” She says, “I’ve always been a curious person. Now I have time to do anything I want to do. I can travel, take classes, start new hobbies. It’s the best time of my life.”
