On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, over 60 long-time donors and supporters celebrated the installation of new artwork at the ACC Campus at 7334 Park City Drive in Sacramento. The artwork recognizes major donors to ACC. “Oohs” and “Ahhs” were heard as the unveiling occurred and the Joyce and Harvey Shinozaki artwork lights went on. “Here’s a photo of my class in Walnut Grove,” said one person, and “Oh, our names are right there,” said another. Several recalled the Capital Campaign to build the ACC Nursing Home (now the ACC Care Center) around 1986 – 30 years ago, and recognized how much ACC has accomplished with the community’s support. The new donor wall spans an entire wall facing the main entrance of the building. The new artwork was designed and fabricated by Kaz “Tony” Naganuma of nddCreative in San Francisco. The work incorporates historic photos, many of which were from the family photo albums of ACC volunteers. Donors are recognized at various giving levels for Capital Campaign gifts (Cornerstone) and for Major Gifts and Planned Gifts (Legacy Circles). “All of these efforts will enable ACC Senior Services to be the community resource you envision. Your ongoing support as a donor and Left to Right: Donna Yee, William Yee, and Winston Ashizawa as a volunteer ensures we will always be a community of caring,” remarked Winston Ashizawa, Capital Campaign Chair. A short program included a review of the planned improvements at the ACC Care Center and the possible development of new Memory Care and Assisted Living services. Board President William Yee and ACC CEO Donna Yee also addressed the Left to Right: Florence Wong, Mollie Oto, gathering and thanked the current Cheryl Inouye & Morgan Oto donors and supporters of ACC. President’s Message

Eagle Scout Projects at ACC

By William Yee

While attending a recent meeting of volunteer members of the committee hosting the 30th Annual Care Center Fundraiser event scheduled for September 17, 2016, I came across a plywood sign leaning against the outdoor storage shed behind the Care Center. The sign was a remnant from the early 1980s that told of a vision that was to become a reality. The sign read “Site of Asian Community Nursing Home” a project of the Asian Community Center of Sacramento Valley.” This sign was erected on an empty field on 3.5 acres of land donated by Angelo Tsakopoulos for the ACC nursing home project. After a successful capital campaign and the ongoing fundraising efforts of our bingo volunteers, construction of the nursing home commenced in 1985 and was completed just a little over a year later. Since the beginning, the ACC nursing home strived to provide exceptional care and skilled nursing services for our residents with cultural sensitivity. Over the last three decades, the ACC Care Center achieved and maintained a reputation for excellence. The Care Center continued to receive a 5-Star quality rating from the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Also in recent years, the California Department of Public Health recognized the ACC Care Center for health care quality by awarding annual financial incentives. More recently, the ACC Care Center was awarded the 2016 Bronze National Quality Award by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living. The Bronze award recognized the ACC Care Center for its “Commitment to Quality” and, more importantly, qualified the Care Center to move up to the next step to compete for the “Achievement in Quality” Silver Award in 2017. All of these awards and recognitions reflect the dedication and hard work of the entire Care Center staff and the direct leadership of Administrator Melanie Segar. Page 2

Recently, the American College of Health Care Administrators named Melanie as the recipient of the 2016 Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award in recognition of leadership excellence as administrator of a post-acute and aging services facility. While awards and high ratings for quality care are important to reflect the great reputation of the ACC Care Center, the ongoing physical need for major building improvements are equally important as the building itself has been in daily use and operating for 30 years. At last year’s Care Center Fundraiser event, concept architectural drawings were displayed for viewing to show the plans for renovation of the three-bed and four-bed rooms to provide more patient privacy and expansion of the facility to respond to new federal guidelines for skilled nursing facilities. The Care Center renovation project is a key aspect of Phase II of the ACC Capital Campaign. Through the tireless efforts and personal contribution of architect Ed Kado, construction plans are in the making. As we are all anxious to see the start of actual construction, ACC must first seek permitting, certification and licensing approval from various local and state agencies. These agencies are charged with the responsibility for plan review for building standards and safety concerns as well as reviewing plans for daily operation of a skilled nursing facility for patient care during actual renovation. Although each agency operates independently and on its own timeline, once all the approvals, permits and certifications are obtained, the vision to complete the Care Center renovations that will continue to meet ACC quality care standards and community expectations for the next 30 plus year will become a reality. CHEERS to another 30 years!

FALL 2016 ACC NEWS

“My name is Nick Morrow, and I am a Boy Scout for Troop 136. Starting up, my vision from the beginning has always been to make a difference in the community. From a young cub scout, I always envisioned the day when I would start my Eagle Project. That day is today. Today is the day I plan to do what I and the young boy inside me have planned for my entire life. Although I have changed, my goals and values have not shifted.”

as well: Patrick Wiseman from Troop 1 redesigned part of Greenhaven Terrace’s parking area to recreate two spaces for a green passenger loading zone, installed sign poles, and built and installed a bench for residents to use on their way in and out of the building. Drew Tanaka from Troop 50 installed a bike rack at Greenhaven Terrace for residents and visitors to not only park their bikes but to encourage more seniors to bike toward a healthy lifestyle. This summer, Nick Morrow and crew built paths around the garden beds to make them more accessible for seniors. The pictures only show some of the hard work that Nick, fellow Scouts, and friends and family did to complete the job. The paths were completed in a few very long, very hot, days in July. ACC wants to thank Nick, Brent, George, Patrick, Drew, and all of the other Eagle Scouts that selected ACC as the beneficiary of their Eagle Scout projects. We are appreciative of their efforts and are happy that we have an opportunity to help these fine young men reach the ultimate goal in scouting.

ACC Rides 13th Annual Get Together

Special thanks to Paratransit Inc. staff for joining the celebration! The men and women of ACC Rides Transportation Program “My life changed dramatically on January 5, 2011 when I was suddenly diagnosed as being legally blind. Unable to drive, I was left confused and frightened trying to make sense of how I would take care of my personal and medical needs. After much searching with doctors and other health care professionals, I turned to the ACC Senior Services where I learned about ACC Rides. This offered me my first glimmer of hope! During this initial time of vulnerability, the personal care and concern of the drivers in providing me with safe and secure transportation allowed me to begin to rebuild my life. Initially, looking forward to a life of depression, isolation and dependency on family and society, their drivers opened the door for me to a brighter and a more independent future. ACC Rides allows me to plan and perform my daily activities such as weekly medical treatments, doctor’s appointments, medical tests, pharmacy runs, grocery shopping, banking, etc. Perhaps the most fulfilling benefit is how it allows me to maintain my social contacts with family and friends and participate in community activities, such as classes at the Society for the Blind. There I am able to gain personal satisfaction and contribute back to society by volunteering as a mentor for the newly blind and visually impaired seniors. So you can see why ACC Rides is essential in allowing me to continue to be a fully functioning and contributing member of society.” -D. Kumasaki, ACC Rides Client www.accsv.org

AND THE SURVEY SAYS... At the end of June and beginning of July, we conducted our annual ACC Lifelong Learning and Wellness Program (LLWP) Survey. We received a total of 283 surveys, which was a record number! Those who completed a survey were entered into a drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card and Keith Kato was the lucky winner. As in previous surveys, most of the respondents were women and live in the 95831 zip code. Last year, the majority of respondents were born in the 1940’s and 1950’s. This year, the majority of the respondents were born in the 1940’s and 1930’s. Last year, most of the respondents heard about our classes and programs from friends and family with ACC News a close second. This year, most of the respondents heard about our classes and programs from ACC News with family and friends a close second. Similar to last year, the majority of our

respondents have been participating in ACC classes for less than 5 years. We also received a lot of helpful feedback on other types of paid classes that would be of interest (stretching and self-defense) preferred days and times for classes or workshops (Tuesdays or Wednesdays/11:00am-2:00pm), willingness to pay a nominal fee for free classes, and other ideas for improvement. We will be reviewing those in the next few months to see what can be implemented. We are constantly working to improve on the classes and workshops that we offer. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Please feel free to contact Susan Sarinas at (916) 393-9026 ext. 339 or ssarinas@accsv.org.
