It Pays to Understand Your Medicare BEFORE you Really Need to Use It By Melanie Segar, ACC Care Center Administrator

In 1965, the year Medicare was born, the average income was $6,450 per year; cost of a new house was $13,600; gas was 31cents per gallon; cost of a new car was $2,650; and a loaf of bread was 21 cents. A lot has changed in the last 50 years and we all know Medicare has gotten much more complicated. So you can imagine how many questions we get about what Medicare will pay for when a person needs to come to ACC Care Center. We will try to answer your questions and provide information to help you become a more informed consumer. One of the most important questions

is “What type of Medicare Insurance do you have?” You will need to know if you have Original fee-for-service Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. With Original fee-for-service Medicare, you can choose to go to any skilled nursing facility you want. If ACC Care Center is your first choice, you need to let your doctors and the case manager at the hospital know that right away. You can direct where you go for care. Be aware of your rights to choose where you go for care and insist that the hospital honor your wishes. With Medicare Advantage plans the Continued on page 5

I am pleased to report that ACC Senior Services reached another milestone by announcing and hosting a “Mortgage Paid-Off Party” to celebrate the completed payoff of the ACC Care Center bonds that financed construction of the facility. What started in 1972 as a concern for Asian elders experiencing social and language isolation and the lack of familiar foods in nursing homes, resulted in an ambitious vision to build the Asian Community Nursing Home. The vision became a reality when the 99-bed nursing facility opened its doors in 1987 to provide skilled care that improved the quality of life for those needing placement. Through hard work and financial support of the community, it is a major achievement to own the building free of loans. Getting to this point required leadership to carry out the vision in planning, building and operating a successful skilled nursing center. At the party I had the honor to recognize Chewy Ito as one community leader who stepped up to the challenge to lead as ACC Board President for 19 years. As a visionary and through his forceful leadership style, Chewy personally cajoled his many friends, acquaintances, and anyone who would listen to see the importance of the vision to support the effort to build

President’s Message

the nursing facility. During its years of operation, it was common knowledge that Chewy frequently visited the facility to check on residents as well as staff. What comes next for the Care Center should be no surprise. After living in your own home for 28 years, you are sure to have many ideas to remodel your home to make it more comfortable and usable. With the Care Center, many have shared ideas to improve the function of the building for nursing and rehabilitation services and to provide greater privacy and accessible areas for the residents and their visitors. The ideas being considered are more than a wish list of simple improvements. Rather, we are looking at a major renovation of the Care Center as a new vision for the future. On that note, architect Ed Kado launched his own personal mission by volunteering to develop conceptual designs for renovation and expansion of the Care Center to modernize the building and increase resident safety features. Included in these designs is the plan to improve privacy for all residents by converting existing three-bed and fourbed suites to private and semi-private rooms as well as the possibility of adding new resident rooms to the

Care Center. The designs also address the need for expansion of the rehabilitation area due to the increased number of residents requiring rehabilitation services. In his commitment to improve the Care Center, Ed has enabled staff and family members to participate with ideas and input. For his contributions, Ed Kado was unanimously selected as the honoree for the 29th Annual ACC Care Center Fundraiser. A vision to start such an ambitious renovation project of this magnitude starts with a successful Capital Campaign to underwrite the project and ensure that ACC continues to retain the highest standard of care in our skilled nursing center. If you want to share in the vision, I invite you to join the dozens of early supporters with a pledge to the Capital Campaign by calling Brenda Page, Fund Development Officer, at (916) 503-0294. In closing, I want to give a shout-out to Sacramento Councilman Rick Jennings, District 7, for presenting ACC Senior Services with a resolution signed by the Mayor and the City Council that recognizes ACC for its community partnership and outstanding efforts in enriching the lives of seniors, their families and the community.

Fall Prevention and More at ACC’s Lifelong Learning and Wellness Program By Susan Sarinas, Program Manager

In June, we distributed our annual Lifelong Learning and Wellness Program Survey. We received a total of 252 surveys, which was a 30% increase over the number of surveys we received in 2014. Other highlights: 62% of respondents rated our new facility as excellent, 69% rated our instructors as excellent, and 52% rated our class offerings as excellent. These all reflected increases over the ratings we received in 2014. Thank you to everyone who participated. We look forward to sharing other results with you and implementing some of the suggestions we received. The winning tickets in our drawing to win two free classes are #4157820 and #4157784! See Anna Su to claim your prize. Annual Fall Prevention Awareness week is September 20-26. This year’s theme is “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls.” To encourage Fall Prevention Awareness, we will have a Fall Prevention workshop on Tuesday, 9/22, taught by Wayne Shimizu, and on Wednesday, 9/23, Kelly Ward, The Fall Prevention Lady, will be teaching Fall Prevention 101. On Friday, 9/25, we will have a special StopFalls Sacramento Fall Prevention Week Screening event, sponsored by UC Davis Medical Center. We will be offering fall risk senior fitness tests, shoe assessments, and medication reviews. Speaking of fall prevention, a new offering this fall is a three-month Balance, Mobility and Coordination class based on the Alexander Technique. This class is and will be taught by Kimiye Touchi starting in October. “The Alexander Technique is a way of learning how you can get

rid of harmful tension in your body.” October is National Crime Prevention Month, and we have scheduled speakers on Holiday Safety and Stalking and Harassment. Speakers from HICAP will be providing information on Medicare Fraud and will also talk about everything you need to know about Medicare just in time for open enrollment in October. October is also Financial Planning Month. According to an article in USA Today, a 2015 Rocket Lawyer estateplanning survey by Harris Poll indicated that 64% of Americans don’t have a will. We will have a speaker from the Senior Legal Hotline to talk about wills and estate planning. Another article in USA Today also noted that 54% of people in a new national poll conducted for the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council have never spoken to a financial advisor. We will have two Certified Financial Planners to talk about planning for retirement. December is National Identity Theft Prevention Month. Join us for the Money Smart for Older Adults: Prevent Financial Exploitation workshop. We will talk about the common types of Elder Financial Exploitation like telephone scams, identity theft, and scams that target homeowners and veterans. Check out our Fall Class Schedule for new cooking classes, excursions, and workshops planned for the next quarter. For more information or to register for a class, contact Anna Su at (916) 393-9026, ext. 330, or classes@accsv.org.

Better Choices, Better Health® By Serena Van, VA/Americorps Service Coordinator

According to the National Council on Aging, 80% of older adults have one chronic condition such as diabetes, arthritis, and congestive heart failure. Chronic conditions may affect not only an individual’s physical well-being, but also mental well-being. Treating chronic conditions can be a complicated matter that involves the individual’s physician, a caregiver and most importantly—the patient. The patient is actually the best person to understand his or her own symptoms and should be in control of managing his or her pain or treatment options. To address the complexity of managing chronic conditions, a team of clinicians and researchers at Stanford School of Medicine developed the Better Choices, Better Health® workshop series. These six weeks of interactive classes are designed to give participants the confidence and skills to become active managers of their chronic conditions and lead a healthier lifestyle. For those who are already confident in their current state of health, the workshops allow further discussion regarding nutrition, fatigue management, and relaxation techniques. The classes also encourage individuals to talk to their physicians about their conditions and needs. For example, how do you tell your physician that your medications cause constant drowsiness and prevent you from spending time with your family? Equally important, the workshops will also offer advice on how to deal with difficult emotions that patients experience when they feel their voice is not being heard. To evaluate the success of their workshop series, the Stanford researchers followed 1,000 people with chronic

conditions who completed the series. These individuals were monitored for three years, and the study revealed that those who completed the workshop series showed improvement in exercise, cognitive symptom management, and spent fewer days in the hospital than individuals who did not enroll in the workshops. Below are testimonials from past participants of the Better Choices, Better Health® workshops: “At every class, I learned many new things and ways to live my life differently, pragmatically with health and nutrition at the forefront of my thoughts and action”Veteran “It was nice to share with likewise people. It was fun and informative” – Veteran Overall, the Better Choices, Better Health® workshop has been proven effective in providing participants with the skills and knowledge to better manage the pain and stress brought about by their chronic conditions. ACC Senior Services has offered the Better Choices, Better Health® series since 2009. Caregivers are encouraged to attend the workshops with their loved one as it will help both parties to understand and manage chronic conditions more effectively. The next series begins on Friday, October 2, from 2:004:30 p.m. To register for this free workshop series, contact Anna Su at (916) 393-9026, ext. 330. For the complete schedule, visit the ACC website at www. accsv.org.

I had the pleasure of meeting Greenhaven Terrace’s Walk and Talk walking group on a Wednesday morning. Aurelia Chavarriaz, a walking group member, joked how their walks were getting shorter because they looked forward to the rest stop at the Welcome Center. A giggle broke out among the group. Siok Oen, the organizer, told me she started the group three months ago. Walking has had such a positive effect on her health that Siok www.accsv.org

encouraged her fellow neighbors to join her. She takes a brisk walk at 7am and swings back to Greenhaven Terrace to meet with the rest of the group. They take a walk around Lake Crest Village mall and around ACC with a stop at the Welcome Center. They found out about the Welcome Center’s beverage service a month ago and since then have made it a regular stop on their walks. The Welcome Center has expanded their beverage service to include iced tea and cold water in addition to their coffee and hot tea. Beverage service is daily from 9:30am – 4:30pm. LLWP instructor Sabitre Rodriguez passes Level 3 of The Duan Wei System in Yang Style Tai Chi By Linda Revilla, Program Director

On a spring trip to China, Sabitre Rodriguez attended the X’ian International Yang Taiji Quan Social Event 2015. As part of the event, Sabitre took the test for certification in the The Chinese Wushu Duanwei System. According to their website, “The evaluation targets of the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System embrace wushu ethics and etiquette, theory, technique and skills. The professional level of players can be graded from low to high as follows: primary Duan (levels 1~3), middle Duan (4th~6th Duan) and advanced Duan (7th~9th Duan)… To that end, each level has its own form. Each form can be used firstly as solo practice, next as choreographed fighting with a partner, and finally each move in the form can be studied for its real-world martial application. This progression follows the methods of traditional wushu training which combines practice and fighting, and embodies the essence of wushu. The

practitioner can master the techniques and also understand their meaning.” Congratulations to Sabitre, who passed Level 3 of The Duan Wei System in Yang Style Tai Chi! Sabitre also competed in a Tai Chi competition. She achieved 2nd place in doing the Yang 37 form. More congratulations for this “silver” accomplishment! In addition to competing, Sabitre’s tour group of tai chi practitioners, which included former LLWP instructor Janny Wu, visited X’ian, Mount Hua, Shanghai, Luoyang, Pingyao, Heibei, and more . They also were in China for World Tai Chi Day (April 25th). Sabitre observed, “But it appears, World Tai Chi Day is not recognized here in China maybe because every day is Tai Chi Day here!” We are very fortunate to have Sabitre as one of our LLWP instructors. Sabitre teaches Easy Tai Chi, Tai Chi Gong, and Senior Yoga at ACC. For more information on Duan Wei System http://www. yulong.com.au/fish-tales/an-introduction-to-the-chinesewushy-duanwei-system. ACC Senior Services was recognized by Councilman Rick Jennings at the Sacramento City Council meeting on July 12, 2015.

Everything You Need to Know About Being a Trustee What You Don’t Know Could Really Hurt You! Most people feel honored when they are asked to serve as a trustee of a family trust; a trustee is the most pivotal and critical part of any trust. However, the role of the trustee and the importance of that role are virtually unknown to the average person. The trustee often has no idea about the extent of personal liability if he/she makes a mistake. This seminar will cover the ins and outs of what a trustee must do to perform his/her duties in a satisfactory manner. It is a must for those of you who have been named trustee of an estate. It will also be very helpful for individuals who have set up a trust or are considering one. The focus of this seminar will be how to prepare and how to plan in the event of a death, which is necessary to prevent potential liability.
