A Great Day of Golf Golfers hit the links at Teal Bend Golf Club to tee off at the 11th Annual ACC Senior Services golf tournament on May 11, 2017. A cool morning, sunny skies and warm smiling faces greeted 137 golfers early in the morning. An ACC embroidered puffy vest, provided by A-1 Embroidery, kept golfers warm while they got reacquainted with old friends and warmed up at the driving range and practice greens. Additional tee prizes were donated by Rosie Day Spa and East Lawn Cemetery. All the golfers teed off at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Later in the afternoon, ACC Senior Services hosted a luncheon and award ceremony at the ACC Campus. Golfers and other attendees socialized on the patio, basking in the mid-70s warmth provided by the gentle sunshine. They dined on a delicious variety of poke salads, kalua pork, fresh fruit, and tons of homemade desserts.

By: Brian Chin Lynn and Wayne Kurahara and their team of volunteers did a phenomenal job organizing and preparing all the food for the luncheon. ACC would like to extend a huge thank you to L&L Hawaiian BBQ, located at the Lakecrest Shopping Center, for graciously donating the main course at the luncheon for the 11th consecutive year! Stephen Kashiwada was the emcee for the luncheon program and awards ceremony. The winner of the Open Flight Low Gross, Continued on Page 6

President’s Message The first four months of 2017 have been remarkable in the success of the everyday services of ACC’s senior communities centered at the ACC Care Center, Greenhaven Terrace Senior Living and Assisted Living, and the Wellness Campus. We can celebrate the steady collaborative achievements that occur daily through staff, volunteers, donors, and participants/residents. And really, this is happening every year, not just 2017 – a remarkable devotion to the quality of life for our seniors. The many “threads” of ACC individuals creates a “Tapestry” of artful experience that is continuous in my recollection back to the early 1970’s when ACC was located in a simple, wooden house by Southside Park.

That first ACC location was where senior recreation classes and gatherings took place - this was a house owned by George and Toshi Tambara. I recall that the single car detached garage was where we held both pottery classes and our bigger meetings when we could not fit into the dining room and living room. From this beginning where ACC dwelled in the Tambara house, some forty years later George Tambara lived at the ACC Care Center with Toshi’s constant visits. Sadly, they have both passed since last December with lives of community leadership. With a grateful heart, let’s remember our wonderful past as

we create our future. In this issue of ACC News, you will read about a number of notable events from the February Crab Feed, April’s Nihonmachi – a place to be, and Growing Up Sansei performances supported by both the Buddhist Church and the Japanese United Methodist Church, and May’s Big Day of Giving and the 11th Annual Golf Tournament. All of these events were highly successful in both Friend-raising and Fund Raising. This is especially important as we devote most fund raising to the ACC Capital Campaign which has a 2017 intermediate goal of raising $600,000. Supporting the Capital Campaign means making a gift that is going above and beyond in your generosity. Your purchase of fund raising event tickets and attending events, or paying for classes and other services are all important. But to update and expand the ACC Care Home, only meaningful extra gifts will make it possible to achieve major construction. So what does the word meaningful translate to in dollars? Let me suggest that if you give ACC $100 per year, which doesn’t include event ticket cost, then a range of an extra Five to Ten times that amount to the Capital Campaign, which would be $500 to $1000 per year. We are grateful that some Campaign donors are pledging at even greater levels of $5,000 or more per year.

Pen Pal Program Comes to Greenhaven Terrace The Pen Pal Program provides an opportunity for students and seniors to develop a friendship, while allowing students to develop their writing and communication skills, and providing socialization for seniors. There were a hand-full of Assisted Living residents from Greenhaven Terrace and students from Smythe Academy of Sciences K-6 who participated in this program. Each of the residents was paired up with at least one student. They wrote and exchanged wonderful letters. At the end of March, they were able to meet each other and had lunch together for the first time. It was an incredible experience for both the residents and the students.

Required Minimum Distribution: Windfall or Time Bomb?

How does this work? How are the withdrawal rates determined? Is this a good or bad thing? How does it impact my current income tax situation? How does this impact my estate to my beneficiaries? It Is there a way to defer withdrawals beyond age 70 ½ without penalty?

Public policies emphasize saving for retirement. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), and the Revenue Act of 1978, encouraged Americans to contribute to a variety of “qualified retirement plans” often called a 401(k), 457, or a 403(b).

The two primary benefits of these deferral plans are that: 1) we don’t pay taxes as the investments grow/decline during the deferral period; and 2) it is a great way to have savings regularly deducted from our paychecks before we

Congratulations ACC Rides ACC Rides Transportation Services is the winner of the National Volunteer Transportation Center 2016 STAR Award for Excellence. ACC Rides will receive a cash award of $10,000 to be used for transportation volunteer program expansion and promotion. The STAR Awards program began in 2000 by the Beverly Foundation. They exist to “award the best of the best” for programs that service senior passengers. For over thirteen years they collected enough data to create a database that includes information on passengers, vehicles, and transport needs. The STAR Award istelf has been handed out only 143 times to only 100 organizations. In addition to the award, ACC Rides client Dorothy Kumasaki’s story was chosen as one of the sixty five stories to be featured and published nationally in, “Passenger Stories from The Road,” the book is a compilation of the stories from riders using transportation volunteer programs. This Award allows ACC Rides to continue to fulfill it’s mission to provide a lifeline and a measure of independence to people who cannot drive, due to mobility or other disabilities, or lack other means of transport. An excellent alternative to public transit, we are honored to be a part of this nationally .

The place to be was the Sacramento Buddhist Church kaikan. An audience of 440 people saw the performance of Nihonmachi. Northern California’s first script reading of “Growing Up Sansei – Garage Door Opener” had nearly 400 attendees. A group of local underwriters financed the production, with volunteers from the sponsoring organizations handling every contingency, led by Hiroshi F. Kashiwagi. Osaka-Ya sold manju and mochi for both days. “Nihonmachi: The Place to Be,” is a musical journey about Japantown as told through the eyes of three generations of a local manju-making family. A story about family, history and finding one’s roots, it features nostalgic Japanese and American songs which took us back through time to the special place where it all began: Nihonmachi.

“Growing up Sansei – Garage Door Opener” is a combination of a script reading with a dialogue/Q&A facilitated by Soji Kashiwagi and Satsuki Ina, PhD. Satsuki answered questions and discussed how the trauma Japanese Americans faced in American concentration camps, and how the trauma manifested itself in the ways the Nisei brought up their Sansei children. The play opens with Sansei brother and sister Glenn and Sharon Tanaka, who face with the daunting task of cleaning out their parents’ garage after they have passed away.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER By Susan Sarinas, Program Manager If it’s Summer, then it’s time for the annual ACC Lifelong Learning and Wellness Program (LLWP) Survey. Each year, we survey our class participants to see how we are doing and to get feedback on the classes and workshops that we offer at ACC. Your responses help us to decide how to advertise our classes and what classes or activities you would like to see at ACC. Last year, 283 surveys were returned and the majority of respondents heard about classes and programs from friends or family, are female, live in 95831 zip code and were born in the 1930’s and 1940’s. An overwhelming majority of respondents were willing to pay a fee for workshops that we previously offered for free and the amount that got the most votes was $5. The top three classes or activities that participants wanted were: stretching, selfdefense, and CPR. Those who are interested in stretching should check out Senior Fit with Joanna Yanez. This class is designed to help increase flexibility through stretching. In addition, new this year is Music and Motion with Rowena Alberto. This class starts with slow music for stretching and is a combination of Tai Chi, Yoga and Zumba moves. Anyone interested in self-defense should try Tai Chi Self-Defense with George Hom. Because of the slow, graceful movements, many people may not realize that tai chi was

developed as a martial art for defending against attackers. In response to the increase in violence against women, we are offering a class in Self-Defense for Women. It is a series of 4 classes that starts July 28 and will be taught by Irving Lee, a black belt in Jujitsu, and Valen Lee, Tai Chi instructor. We hope to bring a CPR class to ACC in the Fall. Other new classes this quarter are Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Office/ PowerPoint taught by Heman Lee. Welcome back to Donna Tanaka, who will be providing some needed Cell Phone Tutoring. Also coming back to ACC, is Janny Wu, who is teaching Tai Chi Chuan. In addition, returning to teach at ACC are Judie Higashi, RN, and Joaquin Ngarangad. Judie and Joaquin will be leading a 7-week workshop called Stepping On to help you learn how to reduce your risk for falling. Local artist, Marie Taylor, will be bringing her class, Mandalas: The Art of Meditation to ACC. Originally scheduled for January, the class was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We are fortunate to have Marie teach in July and August. Another addition to the schedule is Geneology 101 taught by Barb Chandler. So, look for the 2016 LLWP Survey during the month of July and let us know what you think and what interests you. Also, check out the new classes and workshops for this quarter, you’ll find a lot to look forward to this summer! For any questions or to register for classes, call (916) 393-9026 ext. 330 or email classes@accsv.org.

ACC’S SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM (SCSEP)

SCSEP is the largest federallyfunded program specifically targeting older adults seeking employment and training assistance. The goal of SCSEP is to help participants gain work experience and overcome barriers by receiving on-the-job training at not-for-profit, 501(c)3 community based organizations or government agencies. The dual purpose of the SCSEP program is to provide community service while also improving participants’ job skills to enable them to find full or part-time unsubsidized employment. Currently, SCSEP participants job train at host agencies such as ACC, Meals on Wheels by ACC, Goodwill, state agencies, Eskaton Foundation, Sacramento Food Bank and other nonprofits and government agencies.

Interested in becoming a host agency for the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)? Host Agencies are the heart of the SCSEP program. Agencies must be community-based organizations, government agencies, or non-profit agencies that are able to provide jobtraining skills and supervision to participants. Work training in a realistic job environment will provide learning and feedback that will help participants be successful in finding employment. . If you are interested in becoming a host agency, please call the ACC SCSEP office at (916) 503-5390.

For more information about the program and on how to become a participant, please call the ACC SCSEP office at (916) 503-5390. Summer 2017 ACC NEWS

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED AND VOLUNTEERED!

“On behalf of the Philippine National Day Association (PNDA), it was an honor for our Board members to participate in ACC’s fashion show and attend their Big Day of Giving Party. Our Board is very familiar with the many things ACC does for the community, and we were happy to support the organization in any way we could. We will continue partnering with them again this summer to provide free resources, including health screenings, to many individuals and families-Chris Mateo. “ Another special guest, Tina Macuha from Good Day Sacramento (pictured above) judged our first ever Beautiful Cake Contest. Home baker Barbara Bisson (who has a cake business) won in her category, with Mirror Flowers. Kristy Heittman receiving an honorable mention for her cake “Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Rose.” Our dessert silent auction was also popular. At the Culinary Center, Debbie Seid and her cheerful volunteers sold arena dogs, cookies, smoothies, iced coffee drinks, spam musubi, sticky rice, chicken salad, trifles, and more! Most of the food sold out! The Big Day funds will be used to support existing community-based programs and expand ACC Rides, the Caregiver Support Program, and no- or low-cost Lifelong Learning classes. While ACC obtains some grants to support these programs, none of the grants fully funds any program. We rely on community support to help fill in the gaps in funding. We will be using these funds in 2017, thanks to all who supported us during the Big Day of Giving event.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!
