ACC Assisted Living Staff Wins Sacramento’s Prestigous Caregiver of the Year Award By: Brittant Yamada, Activity Coordinator

Padum Lata, a Med Tech at ACC Assisted Living, received the 2016 Caregiver of the Year Award. Presented by Vice Mayor Rick Jennings at the City of Sacramento Compassion Awards, the purpose of this award is to recognize the compassionate work being done by caregivers in the residential care and skilled nursing facilities within District 7. Padum started with ACC in 2014, she is one of the original staff members that helped open the Assisted Living section of Greenhaven Terrace. Padum is described by her supervisor, Allison Rogers, as “being especially attentive to residents, as if they are members of her extended family. She is a model for providing person centered care and is always willing to mentor new staff. The residents in Assisted Living speak highly of Padum as well.”

Mary Orite, a resident in Assisted Living says that, “Padum is always happy which makes everyone around her happy as well. She is the epitome of a perfect caregiver.” Continued on page 4

President’s Message By Winston Ashizawa

Happy New Year from ACC Senior Services! Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers who support everyone we serve! Congratulations to our staff for a great 2016 and their continuing commitment to excellence! And big thanks to William Yee, our past Board President, and his fellow 2016 Board members for their leadership. It is my pleasure to again serve as ACC President in 2017.

OFFICERS

ACC tries very hard to be deliberative in making plans and implementing them to ensure our services and facilities are ones we can be proud of to provide the best possible environment supporting wellness and quality of life for seniors, their families and caregivers.

about the Capital Campaign. We will answer questions and be able to discuss approaches for making one-time gifts or pledges. Besides supporting the Campaign as individuals and couples, consider family gifts, especially to recognize a loved one. We already have a number of gifts in tribute to special people in our lives.

Ed Kado, continues to give more of his time as “ACC Architect,” in work with ACC board members, staff, and committee members to refine design ideas for the renovation of our Care Center/Skilled Nursing Home. We are in the final design stages for the Care Home design work and look forward to regulatory approvals as the next step.

Also, Campaign supporters have become “Visionaries”, who have made a planned gift, often through their Trust document, but also in other cases by a simple written designation in their life insurance company beneficiary document. Becoming a Visionary is very easy: you just let us know by using our Visionary membership form.

The ACC Senior Services Capital Campaign supports this major renovation and during this year we ask you to step forward to join the campaign. We look for supporters who will make an immediate gift of $1,000. For those who can make a pledge over five years for a total of $5,000, wonderful! Of course we are seeking pledges in larger amounts and at gift totals of $5,000 and more, upon completion, there is a place for recognition on our Donor Wall. Already, ACC has received pledges for over $1 million and we see our goal of $3 Million being attainable given the broad base of volunteers and donors and family members who can directly vouch for the quality of ACC services. For larger pledges/gifts, there are room naming opportunities as well.

The Capital Campaign is a critical element of your support. These gifts are over-and-above what is normally done to support ACC. The Capital Campaign has already made possible key projects like Assisted Living at Greenhaven Terrace Senior Apartments, all the ACC Campus improvements, the preparation steps for the Care Center remodel, and more. It has been about 30 years since ACC had its first Capital Campaign that made construction of the Care Center possible. Together, we can make renewal of the Care Center possible.

On Tuesday, March 21st at 5:00 pm and Friday, March 24th at 3:00 pm you are invited to the ACC Campus for a briefing to learn more

Now is the key time to contact us to formalize your Capital Campaign plans. William Yee, Donna Yee or myself are available to you as are our Fund Development staff person Monica Thompson at 916 394-6399 extension141.

Hope Found at the Society for the Blind By Peter Chan

ACC Senior Services 7334 Park City Drive Sacramento, CA 95831

I am a student at Society for the Blind where I am learning skills to live well while being legally blind. When I came to Society two years ago, they told me about an 8-day training program for blind and low vision seniors. For the 8-day program, free transportation, and lunch are provided. Along with cooking lessons, I received a long white cane and learned how to travel safely up and down curbs, across the street and along the sidewalk. I used to drop toothpaste in the sink missing my toothbrush. Now I squeeze it right into my mouth. I learned solutions like that at Society. I used to dread seeing the doctor with all the bad news, but since I discovered Society for the Blind, I am no longer anxious about losing my vision. I am too busy finding new ways to enhance my many senses. Following the training program for seniors, I began taking more extensive classes in Independent Living Skills, Orientation and Mobility, Braille, and Adaptive Technology through Society for the Blind’s CORE program. These classes will prepare me for employment. When one of my blind instructors shows me how to do something without vision, it gives me hope that I can do it too. Being blind and retired does not

have to be the end. The Society for the Blind has much to offer to the community. It is the door by which I have re-gained my dignity, confidence, and independence. If you have vision loss, go where there’s hope. Go straight to Society for the Blind. You can learn more at SocietyfortheBlind.org or call 916-452-8271. On Monday, May 1, 2017, Toni Boom, Occupational Therapist at the Society for the Blind, will be at ACC Senior Services to speak about the low vision clinic services, the referral process, and magnification devices. Additional topics covered include: adjustment to vision loss, resources, and training through the Senior Impact Project. Join us on Monday, May 1, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Contact (916) 393-9026 to RSVP.

ACC’s Newest Community Program: Paid Job Training for Seniors (SCSEP) Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is the largest federally-funded program specifically targeting older adults seeking employment and training assistance. In January, ACC was selected as subgrantee of the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging to manage Sacramento County’s SCSEP, which helps low-income participants gain work experience and overcome barriers by receiving paid onthe-job training at a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 community-based organization or government agency. The dual purpose of SCSEP is to provide community service to organizations and government agencies while also improving participants’ job skills to enable them to find full or part-time unsubsidized employment. Introduced to SCSEP in 2010, Meals on Wheels by ACC has found great benefit in hosting and providing job training to participants. Jennifer Massello, Office Manager, says SCSEP participants have supported all aspects of the program from assisting the administrative team in the myriad administrative tasks of the program to creating forms and documents, and even coordinating, planning, and assisting volunteer activities. “The goal has always been to help them learn new skills while becoming a part of the Meals on Wheels team. Their support and assistance over the years have been invaluable!” Meals on Wheels by ACC is one of many organizations/agencies benefiting from SCSEP, including American Red Cross, California State departments, Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity, Eskaton, Sierra 2 Center, SSPCA, and more! ACC’s two SCSEP participants, Walter and Nicole, have helped the program off to a great start! With Nicole’s interest in clerical work and Walter’s passion for working with people, the office has been well-balanced. Nicole wishes to gain more experience with Microsoft applications while Walter welcomes additional roles in interacting with other SCSEP participants and host agencies. Both have been a valuable addition to ACC’s team!

How SCSEP Works

Individuals selected in the program are assigned to a host agency where they will be provided supervision and training. Participants will work part-time up to 20 hours a week and will be paid the state or federal minimum wage. Periodic individual employment plans and assessments will be conducted to provide further assistance to participants. Skills learned through the host agency and training sessions will be useful in assisting participants to transition into subsidized employment. SCSEP started at ACC on February 1, 2017. We are excited to add SCSEP to our repertoire of community-based services that assist older adults with maintaining their independence and aging with dignity. ACC looks forward to working with more seniors and expanding our network of partner agencies serving the community.

For additional information about SCSEP, please contact Khonnie Lattasima, Program Manager, at (916) 394-6399 ext. 143 or klattasima@accsv.org. .
