ACC NEWS PRESTIGIOUS QUALITY AWARD RECEIVED BY ACC CARE CENTER

By: Bill Clearwater

ACC Care Center has been recognized as a Silver Achievement in Quality Award recipient by the American Health Care Association. AHCA represents more than 12,000 nonprofit and proprietary skilled nursing centers and assisted living communities nationwide. ACC Care Center was one of only four skilled nursing facilities that received the Silver Award in California this year. Last year was the first year that ACC applied for the progressive award, receiving the first level Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award. The Silver Achievement in Quality Award received this year is the second achievement on the journey to the Gold – Excellence in Quality Award. The recipients of the prestigious Silver Award have demonstrated a commitment to a rigorous journey of continuous quality improvement and dedication to providing excellent care to their residents. With this award, ACC Care Center has been recognized as one of the best providers in the long term care profession.

“It is an honor to be recognized for the quality care and dedicated service that our staff provides to our residents on a daily basis,” said Melanie Segar, Administrator of ACC Care Center. Bill Clearwater, Chief Operating Officer for ACC stated “Applying for the award has helped to focus our staff and leadership team to achieve ever higher levels of quality and exceptional health care outcomes for our residents. Our team will continue to work toward our ultimate goal of being recognized at the Gold Award level”. Chiang Wang, ACC Board Member

stated “This prestigious award is a clear testimony of commitment to excellence in quality care to the residents from all the staff at the ACC Care Center. It is also an outstanding accomplishment from the Care Center leadership team.” The award will be presented to honorees during AHCA/NCAL’s 68th Annual Convention in October. More information on the program can be found on the AHCA Quality Award. https://www.ahcancal.org/quality_ improvement/quality_award/Pages/ default.aspx .

ACTIVE AT EVERY AGE: Sherry’s Story

By: Monica Thompson

Thursday morning commutes look different for everyone and ACC Greenhaven Terrace resident Sherry Yamazumi is no exception. For as the sun rises and most make their way to work, Sherry makes the short excursion to the Capitol to participate in Walk to Thrive. Walk to Thrive is a walking initiative organized by Kaiser Permanente. Marketed as an easy means to better health, the club operates May through September with four walks happening in the Sacramento region: “our Roseville, Downtown Sacramento and South Sacramento walking programs offer a convenient and fun way to meet others and get fit,” their website boasts. Yamazumi heard about the program last September and began the walk in May, “I’ve only missed two walks. It’s a very natural thing for me to be active.” Yamazumi, a long time Sacramento resident, was born in 1949 and graduated from McClatchy High School in 1968. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in social work, she went on to work at the Department of Motor Vehicles for over 20 years.

“I was a runner, I pulled files and gave them to the techs.” After retiring in 2010, she moved into one of ACC’s Greenhaven Terrace Independent Living units, “[this] is a wonderful place to stay, you are able to live the way you want to.” And for Yamazumi that means, completing puzzles in the Community Room, volunteering around ACC at our quarterly newsletter mailings and CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By: Winston Ashizawa

There are many reasons ACC Senior Services continues on a successful path: the devotion of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the quality of our staff. When I think of ACC’s long history, a constant, strong sense of purpose binds us together and guides us in serving, enhancing independence, and empowering the lives of older adults. In a few years, ACC will be fifty years old. Each year we plan strategies and action steps to make ‘what we do’ and ‘who we are’ better. We plan carefully, spend wisely and contribute to a community of respect for each other. We expect the care we provide to nourish and protect our loved ones. All of us working together make ACC the “best non-profit organization” even as new tasks, new roles, new services, and new people move forward with our sense of purpose and our unifying core values. One planned succession involves Donna L. Yee. Our leader plans to step down as Chief Executive Officer after 17 years of leadership and transition to active participation in our greater ACC community. The ACC Board of Directors has been working on succession planning to seek an excellent new CEO with the help of an executive search firm. The Board of Directors is committed to finding a new leader who will honor our sense of purpose through the ACC mission, vision and core values as we look to the future building on the past 17 years of growth and tremendous success; asking ourselves and one another: “How can we improve?”

On August 17th, ACC hosted a Summer Tea donor recognition event to announce our Capital Campaign progress. This past year marked the fulfillment of pledges for many ACC donors, along with several new generous investments in the campaign. In this public phase of the Capital Campaign, we observe donor medallions on the campus lobby wall and rooms named in tribute to faithful ACC supporters. New names have also been added to our lists of planned gift Visionaries and Campaign pledges-in-progress. Most importantly, the Campaign announced a $500,000 matching pledge to the Capital Campaign by Art and Barbara Tom, longtime supporters of the ACC Care Center. This is the most significant Campaign pledge made to date, doubling any new or increased pledge or one-time gift to the Campaign. With deepest thanks we recognize the Toms and their leadership, and the donors that join them in support of the Campaign. Please pick up a copy of our new Capital Campaign brochure complete with stories of the Campaign and our future plans to renovate, expand and transform the Care Center and build a new Assisted Living and Memory Care facility. Please call our Fund Development office at ACC for more information – ask for Rod Malloy, Development Director 916.394.6399 x 124.

INTERN SPOTLIGHT By: Linda Revilla

Our new Bachelor of Social Work Intern, Heng Tran was born in Sacramento. Heng is a veteran, having served in the Navy from 2007 to 2015 as a Corpsman. In 2008 he was shipped out to Okinawa after boot camp and Corpsman training. There he was attached to Combat Logistic Regiment 37 as part of 3rd Marine Logistic Group. He worked mostly at the immunization clinic and says he enjoyed giving immunization vaccines to “big military men that were afraid of getting shots.” His favorite comment to his charges was, “Hope you like smelling socks when you pass out from the shot!” After eight and half years of service he moved back to Sacramento. Witnessing many different social issues in the military made Heng determined to help the community. Heng currently is studying at Sacramento State University and plans to pursue a career in social work. His recent activities include volunteering at the Boy and Girls Club in South Sacramento, tutoring children, and providing a safe environment for them to learn. He also volunteered at the ACC Care Center, assisting with Bingo, arts and crafts, Karaoke, and other activities for residents. Fluent in Cantonese, he enjoys giving back to the local Asian community and looks forward to being at ACC. Heng will intern in the Bridge to Healthy Families program, working with the staff to assist families to access programs and resources that will support them as they care for senior family members.

Our new Master of Social Work Intern, Yesenia Jones was born and raised in Sacramento. She is a recent graduate of Chico State University with a Bachleor’s Degree in Sociology. Her career goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an emphasis in mental health and aging. Yesenia is a first generation Mexican American as well as an English as a secondlanguage learner. Yesenia has juggled multiple roles throughout her life. At age 16, she began working parttime while being a full-time high school student at Valley High School. After high school, Yesenia began working fulltime while attending both Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College. Yesenia, now a wife and mother of two, feels a great sense of accomplishment being able to balance family life, a growing career, and her education. Yesenia also a singer/songwriter working with local Latin bands in Sacramento. One of her greatest joys is working one-on-one with seniors at ACC Greenhaven Terrace. As the Resident Services Manager, Yesenia has the opportunity to offer Social Services to residents who are struggling with a variety of health and mental health conditions. One of her goals is to help the independent living residents age in place. Yesenia is excited to expand her learning and services to ACC’s Bridge to Healthy Families caregiver support program under her Work Conversion Field Placement through Sacramento State’s Division of Social Work. Being fluent in Spanish, she will be able to reach out to communities that may not be familiar with ACC and the services we provide.

PICKLEBALL IS A WINNER!

............Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. for seniors. The game is a combination of tennis, badminton, paddle tennis and table tennis. In 2015, a proposal was presented and approved by the ACC Board of Directors to use the former basketball courts at the new ACC campus for the sport of Pickleball. Volunteers painted and striped the new playing surface resulting in the first Pickleball courts in the City of Sacramento. During the second season of Pickleball at ACC Senior Services, it became obvious the conditions of the courts would require extensive repairs in the future. Now in the third season, the existing court surfaces are bisected by long cracks. Repairs and resurfacing are required to prepare the courts for years of healthy Pickleball activity. With the help of the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation, a Pickleball fundraiser raised $1,400

toward the required repairs. Completing the asphalt repairs, sealing, painting and striping the Pickleball courts would require an estimated additional $8,000.

You can help! Do you know a company that would consider donating their services for all or part of the Pickleball courts repairs and improvements? You can also contribute to the ACC Pickleball Fund to continue the health, wellness and community impacts of Pickleball at ACC. Improvements in health and wellness have been documented by ACC Pickleball participants. A Pickleball lead volunteer shared his annual physical results with excitement after reaching his desired weight loss goal and lower lab test numbers. Other players have shared wide ranging health benefits including increased stamina, strength and cardiovascular fitness. Since it is a game that has been embraced by many seniors, it has created opportunities to make new friends, socialize on and off the courts, and enhance family bonding. The sport has become a great option to engage in a fun form of exercise for both the body and the mind. Pickleball is a great way to fulfill this goal by helping to strengthen the body, improve reaction time, enhance balance and promote overall health. Whatever the age, regular exercise is a vital part of a healthy and happy life.

AARP HERO AWARD NOMINATION Dale Yamada has been an ACC Rides volunteer driver for more than eight years. He drives twice a week, seven hours each day, and on holidays. Dale takes many of our older adult clients to dialysis and drives ACC shuttles for special community events. During his tenure with ACC Rides, Dale has logged over 6783 volunteer hours to date, makes monetary donations to ACC, and never accepts free lunches provided to volunteers, saying, “I wouldn’t be a volunteer if I accepted a lunch.” Dale sets an example for other volunteers and ACC staff of what their priorities and standards of care should be when performing a job of such importance to our clients. His dedication is a clear statement about what is possible when you prioritize your community’s needs above your own. Dale’s dedication to ACC and its clients is unique. During holidays, he often pays social visits to lonely clients on weekends. Dale buys food for dialysis clients who are often hungry after their treatment, and has also purchased $5.00 vouchers for riders who are unable to make the donations for their rides. He takes that extra step to make sure people are safe, and that has been a great example for other volunteers and staff at ACC Rides. We are so greatful for his dedication and service to our clients. THE UPSIDE OF DOWNSIZING

According to Wikipedia, “a mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol representing the universe.” The term “mandala” now often refers to a diagram, chart or geometric pattern. Local artist, Marie Taylor, has been teaching Mandala Art to seniors at Hart Senior Center. Many of those seniors who didn’t think they had any artistic talent are suprised to discover how easily they can create colorful and intricate mandalas. From 10:00-11:00 am, Marie will demonstrate how to create an intricate mandala using only the simplest tools. Watch, learn, and ask questions about this universal art form.

Presenter: Janene Russick, Personal Organizing Coach, The Art of Living Simply Anyone who has downsized to a smaller living space will tell you, “It is WORK!” Choosing what to keep and what to leave behind is only part of the equation in this life-changing transition. Whether 36 or 86 years old, there are things that all of us can do to help make our transitions easier. Join Janene Russick and her special guest, Elsie Yun, who will share a personal look into the Upside of Downsizing. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fragrance -free workshop. Please do not wear any colognes, perfumes, or scented products (e.g. lotions, shampoo, hair spray). Pre-registration and pre-payment required. Drop-ins accepted at the higher rate if space available.
