ACC Care Center has been recognized as a 2016 recipient of the Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care. The award is the first of three distinctions possible through the National Quality Award Program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), the leading association for long term and post-acute care. The program honors providers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality of care for seniors and persons with disabilities. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the hard work and quality of care our team provides every day,” said Melanie Segar, Administrator of ACC Care Center. “We are committed to providing high-quality, person-centered care to our residents and their families. Our goal is to never stop improving.” Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is the foundation of the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative. President’s Message By William Yee

There is no doubt that your financial giving and annual commitment goes a long way to support the many programs and services offered by ACC Senior Services. The August 16, 2016, unveiling of the new donor wall and artwork at the ACC Campus is a demonstration of support and confidence by our donors that ACC is on the right path to continue its mission and goal to offer a continuum of services to all seniors in the community. ACC is committed to growing community services by targeting unmet needs that help older adults be as functionally independent as possible and enhance their quality of life in the community. Within the last 10 years, the Board of Directors has taken specific action to invest in a number of capital improvements and projects to address future needs of elders in our community. In 2007, ACC took a major step forward to provide residential housing for the elderly by acquiring a 166-unit independent senior living apartment community which it named ACC Greenhaven Terrace. In keeping with the plan to expand services, land was acquired in the Pocket-Greenhaven area in 2010, with hopes to develop assisted living services at ACC. Due to the recession, the plan for a stand-alone assisted living project was put on hold. As the economy improved the Board approved the idea to convert a number of independent apartments to 24 assisted living apartments at Greenhaven Terrace. To fund the project the Board decided the time was right to launch a fundraising campaign beginning with a quiet phase in 2013. Construction proceeded and Assisted Living at Greenhaven Terrace opened in 2014, to offer the supportive care and assure a safe environment for our new residents. With the commencement of a Capital Campaign, the Board approved another project to remodel the ACC Campus building. In 2015, the staff members of ACC Programs and ACC Administration relocated to the building that can now accommodate the growing volume of activity and demand for more classroom, meeting, and office space.

The Board recognizes that the ACC Care Center has provided almost 30 years of 24/7 use. Although improvements have been made to the kitchen and many public areas, the resident rooms need significant updating. There is a pressing need for more space for rehabilitation, smaller clusters for dining and social activities, and private and semi-private bedrooms with full bathrooms. Design plans are underway to work with the State and City for these improvements which will take a few years to complete. In conversations with donors and supporters, more families are asking if and when ACC will offer memory care services. As the Independent and Assisted Living Apartments at ACC Greenhaven Terrace are full and a waiting list has been established, discussions are taking place to evaluate ACC’s capacity to commence a new project to develop new memory care and assisted living services as part of the Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign is an ongoing effort to fund the many capital projects that were initiated in these past few years and to develop future services. During the quiet phase, ACC raised the first million dollars. We are now in the public phase of our Capital Campaign with a key focus to modernize the Care Center’s resident rooms, expand the rehabilitation space, and enhance the dining room. Moving forward we will need at least another two million to leverage financing to fully update the ACC Care Center and develop new memory care and assisted living services. To enable ACC Senior Services to be the community resource you envision, I am asking you to join all the directors on the ACC Board and make a pledge to the Capital Campaign. For those who have already pledged, I ask you to consider an increase in your pledge. I also ask everyone to introduce others to the Capital Campaign so we can achieve the vision for a continuum of ACC services in our community in the years to come. To make your pledge to the Capital Campaign or ask how to help, contact ACC Fund Development Officer Teresa Greenman at 916503-0294. Your ongoing support as a donor ensures that ACC will always be known as a community of caring.

The program assists providers of long term and post-acute care services in achieving their performance excellence goals. The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Providers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop an organizational profile with essential performance elements such as vision and mission statements and an assessment of customers’ expectations. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement a performance improvement system. Trained Examiners review each Bronze application to determine if the center has met the demands of the criteria. As a recipient of the Bronze Commitment to Quality Award, ACC Care Center may now move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria required for the Silver - Achievement in Quality Award. “I applaud the women and men of ACC Care Center for their commitment to improve quality care,” said the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Christine Boldt. “This award is the first step in a program that serves as an essential guide to performance excellence. I encourage ACC Care Center to continue their quality journey.” The award will be presented during AHCA/NCAL’s 67th Annual Convention and Exposition in Nashville, Tennessee, October 16-19, 2016.

“NIHONMACHI: THE PLACE TO BE & GROWING UP SANSEI” COMING TO SACRAMENTO ON APRIL 29 + 30, 2017

“Nihonmachi: The Place to Be,” a musical journey about Japantown as told through the eyes of three generations of a local manju-making family, and “Growing up Sansei,” a community event and dialogue about Japanese American family dysfunction, is coming to Sacramento on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. (“Nihonmachi”), and Sunday, April 30 at 2 p.m. (“Growing up Sansei”) at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento Kaikan. Presented by the Buddhist Church of Sacramento, the Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church and ACC Senior Services, the two events will be performed by the Grateful Crane Ensemble, a nonprofit theatre group based in Los Angeles. “Nihonmachi” tells the fictional story of Alan Iwata, a burned-out, Sansei manju maker who is shutting down his family business after 99 years. But just before his doors close for good, the spirit of his Issei grandfather returns and takes Alan on a journey back some 77 years to Nihonmachi the way it used to be. Written by Kashiwagi, directed by Darrell Kunitomi, with musical direction by Scott Nagatani, the two act musical follows a Japanese American family through the Great Depression, the war years in camp, resettlement after camp, redevelopment in the 50’s and 60’s, the Asian American Movement of the 70’s and the Redress Movement in the 80s. “By learning his family history,” said Kashiwagi, “Alan realizes the tremendous sacrifices and challenges his family overcame to keep the family business alive, and in the end he decides it’s well worth the extra effort to work one more year so he and the community can celebrate

100 years of making manju together.” The cast for the show includes Kerry Carnahan, Loryce Hashimoto, Yoko Ibuki, Keiko Kawashima, Darrell Kunitomi, Kurt Kuniyoshi, Merv Maruyama, Helen H. Ota and Shaun Shimoda. Musicians include Scott Nagatani on piano, Danny Yamamoto (of Hiroshima) on drums and Taiko and Gordon Bash on bass. “Growing up Sansei” or GUS, is a combination of a live play reading, plus a community dialogue/Q&A facilitated by Dr. Satsuki Ina. Formerly of Sacramento and now living in the Bay Area, Dr. Ina is a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in cross-cultural counseling and the effects of WWII camp trauma on the Nisei and subsequent generations.

In 2016, Grateful Crane presented the GUS event in San Fernando, Los Angeles and Orange County, and nearly 600 Sansei attended. The cast for “Garage Door Opener” includes Haruye Ioka, Dian Kobayashi, Kurt Kuniyoshi and Shaun Shimoda. Ping Wu will read the stage directions. The Buddhist Church of Sacramento is l oc ated at 2401 R i v er s i de Bl v d i n Sacramento. General admission tickets are $20 for “Nihonmachi” and $15 for “Growing up Sansei” or $30 for both shows.

Entitled “Garage Door Opener,” the play opens with a Sansei brother and sister faced with the daunting task of cleaning out their parent’s garage and house after they have passed away. As they sift through dozens of tofu containers, kamaboko boards and broccoli rubber bands, they begin to gain a better understanding of their parents—and themselves—by the items their mom and dad left behind. “It’s what I call my ‘Japanese American dysfunctional family play,” said Kashiwagi. “Just the mention of this has brought smiles and laughter from baby-boomer Sansei who grew up in the post-war JA family environment. Our GUS event delves into why this topic resonates so deeply.” Dr. Ina will be on hand to answer questions as well as talk about the trauma Japanese Americans faced in camp, and For more information, sponsorship how it manifested itself in the ways the opportunities, and to purchase tickets, contact Monica Thompson with ACC Nisei brought up their Sansei children. Support Your Favorite Charity With Life Insurance By: Esther Aw

As Americans, we can take pride in the fact that we are a nation of givers. And as the economy improves, charitable giving is on the rise. In fact, according to the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, in 2013 total charitable giving from U.S. individuals, corporations, and bequests exceeded $335 billion. But with money still being tight for many Americans, it is nice to know that there is still a way to support a favorite charity without having to worry about the impact it could have on your budget. How? By giving the gift of life insurance. Here are just a few ways you can use this proven method to contribute money to your favorite causes: • Donate an existing policy – If you already have a policy and no longer need the death benefit, you can irrevocably transfer the ownership of the policy to your desired charity. While the charity will be responsible for any remaining premium payments, it will also receive the full death benefit when you die. • List the charity as a beneficiary – As the owner, you remain in control of your policy and can leave money to as many beneficiaries as you like: children, grandchildren – even multiple charities. Or you can name a single charity the sole beneficiary, and it will receive the entire amount. • Purchase a separate policy – There are times when it makes sense to have separate policies: one for loved ones, and for charitable gifts. This techniques can prove especially helpful if you would like to retain ownership of one policy, but not the other. • Create a Charitable Remainder Trust: While this planned –giving tool is designed to shelter assets such as stocks and real estate, you can also incorporate life insurance if it’s set up correctly. Be sure to consult a trust attorney before pursuing this approach. Giving life insurance can be a lasting and recession proof way to support a worthy cause. Depending on the method you choose, it may also offer a variety of tax benefits. This educational, third-party article is provided as a courtesy by Esther Aw, Financial Advisor (CA Ins. STRUMMING ALONG AT ACC ASSISTED LIVING

By: Linda Revilla By now you know that ACC has many musical performing groups, with multiple ukulele, guitar, taiko drumming, and singing groups. New to the ACC talent line-up are the “Happy Strummers,” based out of ACC Assisted Living. In 2014, Assisted Living residents provided the original impetus for the Happy Strummers when they expressed a desire to have a weekly singing activity. Led by Activity Coordinator Brittany Yamada, staff responded enthusiastically, and with the assistance of a volunteer from the ACC Pocket Pickers, and key ukulele-playing volunteers from Independent Living, set up weekly meetings. The original participants started with pre-owned ukuleles donated by the three ACC ukulele clubs. Though most participants play ukuleles, the new group was never a class per se-- it was dedicated to singing and socializing more than ukulele playing. Other residents can become involved by simply listening and enjoying the music. Residents’ friends and family join in whenever they visit. From the very beginning, Brittany and staff encouraged new residents to participate. Brittany is always responsive to the groups’ needs, procuring song binders, music stands, music stand lights, and tambourines. She helps residents maintain their song binders in alphabetical order and updated with new songs. Resident assistants often accompany and reassure participants who are initially very shy or reluctant. The Happy Strummers have helped residents come out of their shell and try something new. One gentleman, initially frowning when he was wheeled in, actually began to smile, and then cry, when he heard the group singing for the first time. He soon became an ardent and regular tambourine player for the group! Sadly, the gentleman passed away a year ago, but his love of music remains with the group. The songs sung by the Happy Strummers are the “classics” that other ACC ukulele clubs also sing. They do not just sing easy or simple songs. Some of the songs are in Hawaiian. Glenn Watanabe, the “godfather” of the ACC music programs and the musical director of the Happy Strummers, says that the Strummers sing the Hawaiian songs as well as the other ACC ukulele clubs. Nami Berg, an Independent Living resident and member of the Happy Strummers for about a year, generously donated three microphones, stands and cables to the group, which they use when they perform in larger venues. Nami also wove Continued from cover

Once again the food and wine was second to none served up by our dedicated volunteers who helped to make the evening such a warm and fun event. Music flowed from Sac of Soul and put many smiles on the faces of our guests. Our sincere appreciation goes to the restaurants, businesses and individuals who made contributions to make this event such a memorable evening. ACC’s dedicated volunteers provided the heart and soul as well as the manpower needed to successfully put on such a gala event. We had much to celebrate that night as the ACC Care Center has recently received bountiful awards such as a 5 star-rating from the Federal Centers for Medicare and

beautiful ribbon leis and provided flower arrangements for the ladies to wear in their hair when they perform. Nami dances hula to some of the Hawaiian songs that the Strummers perform. She says, “I think that this is the happiest group between the Assisted Living residents and the Independent Living residents. The members help each other and motivate each other. People in the audience get happier when they see us singing and doing hula. Our leader, Glenn, is a marvelous player, teacher, and singer. He’s got an incredible voice!” Additionally, Glenn teaches residents who cannot hold a ukulele the traditional way a special technique that enables them to play. “At Greenhaven Terrace, we encourage residents, family members, and volunteers to develop new activities. We especially like to see projects where residents get together to support each other and also serve others outside of Greenhaven Terrace. Happy Strummers is a great example of this kind of activity, where residents can learn a new skill and then go out to entertain others,” says Fran Bowman, Greenhaven Terrace Community Director. The Happy Strummers share their talents at Greenhaven Terrace celebrations and at the ACC Care Center. They are also regular performers at Triple R, the City’s day program for seniors with dementia. Happy Strummer Mary Orite enjoys performing and seeing the smiling faces of the Triple R participants. She says, “it is so wonderful to be able to give to others.” The Happy Strummers have become a huge part of the activities at ACC Assisted Living. Brittany, Allison Rogers, the Resident Care Manager, and resident assistants promote the group to new residents. Beyond making music, participating in the group brings many social and health benefits for the residents. Members care for each other, sharing song sheets, ukulele playing tips, and song timing. Playing the ukulele and tambourines takes eye-hand coordination and the maintenance of physical mobility and dexterity. Learning new lyrics and chord changes may help with cognitive elasticity. Members of the Happy Strummers are inspiring examples of what “lifelong learning” is all about. For more information about the Happy Strummers, contact Brittany Yamada at (916) 393-9026. The Happy Strummers welcome donations of new or pre-owned ukuleles and percussion instruments.
