Call Your Caddy - It’s Tee Time! By Mandy Hwang, Fund Development Assistant

Golfers hit the links and teed off at the 10th Annual ACC Golf Tournament on May 12, 2016! This year’s tournament was surely a hole-in-one! 148 individuals drove, chipped and putted their way through 18 holes at Teal Bend Golf Course. Golfers arrived early morning and were welcomed with warm smiles and a versatile ACC golf windbreaker, in addition to tee prizes provided by Lewis and Associates and Rosie Day Spa. As players made their way to the tenth hole, they were greeted by refreshing tropical smoothies provided by HPSI Purchasing Services. The extraordinary happened; there was a three way tie (13 under par) for the lowest score. The winners based on the tiebreaker were: Vice Mayor Rick Jennings II, Jorse Oseguera, Councilmember Allen Warren, and Jerry Way. The women’s division did not fall short either. With a score of 69, the winners were: Jeanette Chan, Jean Chong, Nanci Dong, and Pat Mar. Team High Gross, consisting of General Lorna Fong, Wendy Kagiyama-Yee, Carol Kudow, and Beverly Shimizu, continued to hold on to their reigning title for

President’s Message By William Yee

By way of a Presidential Proclamation signed by President Barack Obama, April 10 through April 16, 2016, was proclaimed as National Volunteer Week. The Proclamation reminded the nation that people of all ages can volunteer, and anyone can, through the smallest of acts, do their part to improve and touch the lives of others. It is a time to celebrate the selfless individuals around our country who channel their civic virtues through volunteerism. Each year during the month of April, ACC Senior Services takes the opportunity to recognize its 600 plus volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. It is a special time to acknowledge our team of volunteers who tirelessly offer their time, skills and talents to serve in the many programs and services offered to older persons in the community. At the appreciation luncheon hosted by ACC, more than 200 volunteers enjoyed a time socializing with ACC friends, playing bingo and winning raffle prizes. As customary at the Luncheon, volunteers with at least 20 years of service were recognized and added to the ACC Volunteer Hall of Fame. This year, we welcome the addition of Ricky Lim and Barry Lim to the current 86 Hall of Fame members. As proof of the dedication of our volunteers, even the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was planned and organized by our volunteers.

and Café. With an even further reach into the community are the 100 volunteers behind the ongoing success of ACC Rides. The Rides program delivers 4000 one-way rides each month to the general public in 9 zip codes in Sacramento County and parts of the Delta region. It is certainly a challenge for any nonprofit organization to remain relevant and grow from year to year. ACC Senior Services, since its founding in 1972, continues to thrive in its mission to promote the general welfare and enhance the quality of life for our community by identifying, developing and providing culturally sensitive health and social services for older adults. Our strong volunteer base is an important part of ACC’s financial stability as it reflects a successful organization and is an important aspect for attracting new and sustaining donors and major supporters for the Annual Appeal, End of Year Appeal, the Big Day of Giving and the Newsletter donation requests.

More importantly, the many years of success at ACC Senior Services are attributable to our network of volunteers who make the difference for our program participants, residents and stakeholders. This success helps attract new volunteers, sponsorships and community support for our annual ACC fundraisers such as the February Crab Feed, May Golf Tournament, September No doubt our volunteers are the cornerstone Care Center Fundraiser and November to the success of the many ACC programs Greenhaven Terrace Craft and Bake Sale. and services offered to the community. Aging with Dignity – Plan Proactively to Ease the Transition for You and Your Loved Ones w!

Presenter: Donna Shioya, Estate Planning Attorney Tuesday, August 23, 2016 | 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

“If it gets to the point that I can’t make decisions for myself about my care or how to handle my finances, it will all be figured out by my loved ones. They’ll take care of everything for me.” In this day, with medical advances and an emphasis on health and nutrition, we seem to be living longer. Our focus is on staying healthy today. Thinking about being incapacitated and unable to live independently is frightening, and so we tell ourselves that we’ll deal with it tomorrow. However, waiting until there is a problem with your capacity leaves you with very few options, most of which are timeconsuming, costly, burdensome to yourself and loved ones, and potentially embarrassing. This seminar will address the legal options available to you while you still have capacity, as well as what happens to those who have already lost capacity and have failed to plan. Some topics covered include: 1. Incapacity determination through doctor evaluation, court determination, trust provisions 2. Who will care for your finances and for your care (family members, friends, professional fiduciaries?) 3. Conservatorship of the person and estate 4. Advance health care directives 5. Financial durable powers of attorney 6. Trust-based incapacity plan 7. Public agencies (Adult Protective Services and Public Guardian) 8. Documenting how you want to be cared for 9. Minimizing strife and conflict amongst your loved ones during your incapacity

ACC Care Center Receives Prestigious Quality Award for the Third Year in a Row By Melanie Segar, ACC Care Center Administrator

In May, the California Department of Health Services awarded ACC Care Center a special Quality Award Supplemental Payment for the period of July 2014 through June 2015. Out of approximately 1,100 California skilled nursing facilities that were potentially eligible, only 359 facilities qualified for the incentive award based on meeting the highest quality standards set by the State. The intent of the QASP program is to provide tangible recognition of, and incentives for, nursing homes that provide a higher quality of care, as evidenced by meeting specific quality criteria. There is recognition that regulatory enforcement efforts alone do not ensure quality of care in California’s skilled nursing facilities but recognizing and rewarding the best facilities works to promote quality. ACC is proud to have wonderful staff who provide compassionate care to our residents on a daily basis. Person-centered care and respect for elders is key to all of the decisions we make and policies we implement. ACC Care Center is proud to be recognized as one of the best Nursing Homes in California.

ACC Care Center: Exceptional Rehabilitation Services Helping Community Members Get Back Home Short-stay patients and long-term residents alike are benefiting from ACC Care Center’s focus on exceptional Rehabilitation Services. Through our partnership with Therapy Specialists, ACC is providing a full range of rehabilitation services including Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy. The excellent work our therapists are doing has resulted in ACC short-stay patients returning home after a serious injury, surgery or illness at the high rate of 75% compared to an industry average of just 62%. As the Rehab Director, Lo Saechao, is responsible for leading the outstanding therapy team at ACC Care Center. Lo graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy. He enjoys collaborating with patients to identify therapy goals and work together to restore physical function, helping them to return to the life activities that they enjoy most. Lo is a Certified Clinical Instructor and works with PT students during their Clinical Internships, helping them to put their knowledge into practice. Throughout his career, Lo has made it a point to stay abreast of emerging evidence-based treatment approaches. He has presented on a variety of topics such as patellofemoral pain syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and Neurodevelopmental Treatment.

the positive changes. Specifically, he planned a breakfast menu, rearranged storage areas, and improved cooking techniques and training for his staff. Jayson always works in a positive manner with residents, staff and family members and has been a welcome addition to our staff.”

Jayson has brought his keen attention to meeting individual resident’s preferences and has impressed with his outstanding cooking skills and his ability to manage all aspects of our kitchen and food services for Assisted Living.

The daughter of an Assisted Living resident says, “My mother loves the personal attention that she gets from Jayson. Art & Music Event at ACC on the Big Day of Giving

Continued from page 1

There was also an origami station. Hot dog sales were provided by Walt Yip and Jeri Fong from the ACC Welcome Center. As the temperatures hovered in the 80s, Alfred Yee’s fruit smoothies and frozen coffee drinks were a big seller. Technical glitches on the Big Day of Giving website, stymied many donors who wanted to give online. However, many of ACC’s donors decided to go the old-fashioned route, and dropped off checks. Because of their dedication, the support of volunteers, and the wonderful performers, ACC had another successful Big Day of Giving, raising almost $30,000! Photos and a video from the event are on the ACC Facebook page. Photos will also be on display on the monitor in the Welcome Center. You can be sure that for next year’s Big Day of Giving, ACC is planning on having an even bigger celebration.
