ENGAGING SENIORS AT EVERY AGE THROUGH MUSIC May was Older Americans Month, a national observance which celebrates senior citizens around the country and the importance of community programs that serve them. This year’s theme, “Engage at Every Age,” was enacted by the Administration of Community Living (which operates under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). This theme emphasized that a person is, “Never too old (or too young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.” Here at ACC, the Lifelong Learning and Wellness Program (LLWP) aims to improve the quality of life and the quality of aging for seniors in the community by offering an array of classes and activities. Several of the most popular classes involve music and dance. Glenn Watanabe, who has taught music at ACC for several

years, reflects on the early years of the ACC music program. In January 2009, Glenn taught the very first ACC Beginning Ukulele Class. Prior to that, instrumental music at ACC was virtually nonexistent. “Except for the Chinese Opera Singing Class, there was no ACC music program per se,” he said. “The graduates from the first class enjoyed playing together so much that we formed ACC’s first ukulele

performing group, the Pocket Pickers, in May [2009].” Since then, four more ukulele clubs and performing groups have been created, along with two guitar groups: Guitar Ensemble and the Folk Guitar Club. Recently, the Guitar Ensemble welcomed a new member: ACC CEO Darrick Lam. Mr. Lam performed with the Guitar Ensemble group for the first time last April at an ACC

NURSING EDUCATION THRIVES THANKS TO FUND Recognizing the vision of the Mary & Jimmie Yee Performing Arts Fund and the Fong-Yee-Eng Education Fund, ACC Senior Services Care Center leaders have hosted music recitals for the residents. The most recent performance was on April 16, 2018, and featured the Sacramento Chinese Culture Foundation. The Mary & Jimmie Yee Performing Arts Fund and the Fong-Yee-Eng Education Fund also launched the ACC Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) Career Advancement Program with a goal of having the most educated staff in the State of California. The purpose of the Fong-Yee-Eng Education Fund is to educate nursing assistants and other employees in furthering their professional development. Thanks to the Fong-Yee-Eng Fund, our staff now have the resources, time, and the motivation to seek education leading to licensure as a nurse. The Fund provides for a modulebased program with five modules developed and taught by subject

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Winston Ashizawa Wow, what a roller coaster of emotions for all of us at ACC Senior Services so far in 2018 and we are not even at the halfway point of the calendar year! In April, our CEO Gala honored Donna Yee as she stepped down as ACC CEO. Donna dedicated the event proceeds to the Capital Campaign. Our recent golf tournament had an all-time high record of sponsorships, donations and 158 registered players which highlighted a season with three exceptional ACC events. We also have lost many friends and family members in a very hard season of reflection and remembrances. So many of our friends and family have chosen to memorialize loved ones with a gift to ACC. This is a tradition we hold in such high respect, we have invested in new methods and procedures to insure timely communication of thank you letters and memorial tributes. In this issue of the ACC News, you’ll read one of the longest donor lists published for one season of giving, along with the first full list of Big Day of Giving sponsors and donors from this year’s successful campaign. Thanks to you all for continuing your generous support of older adults through ACC! I wouldn’t want to end this issue’s message without

acknowledging one key departure at ACC. We all benefited from the best years of Bill Clearwater’s career served as Chief Operations Officer during a time of significant growth and improvement at the Care Center, Greenhaven Terrace and at the main campus. Bill will be remembered as a key member of a leadership team that deployed best practices and vision for the benefit of thousands of older adults and their families. Thank you, Bill!

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO By Darrick Lam Many wonderful things have gone on since I started my journey with ACC Senior Services four and a half months ago. On April 14, 328 guests, including family, friends and co-workers from far and wide, attended the ACC CEO Gala to celebrate Donna Yee’s 17 years of outstanding leadership as Chief Executive Officer of ACC Senior Services. Net proceeds from sponsor and ticket sales for this event totaled over $65,000 in support of the ACC Capital Campaign. On May 3, hundreds of guests enjoyed ACC’s annual Big Day of Giving Party. Thanks to all our generous donors and supporters, this event generated over $45,000 to help support many of programs provided by ACC Senior Services, including Music in Motion, Lifelong Learning and Wellness, and Bridge to Healthy Families. On May 10, 158 registered golfers brought in an all-time high record of sponsorships and donations of over $30,000 for the 12th Annual ACC Golf Tournament. During the lunch and awards reception, a special recognition was given to Mark Hayashida of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue for his unwavering dedication and generosity in support of the Golf Tournament and other ACC events. During the month of April, I have made a number of staffing changes to ensure that ACC Senior Services remains the premier older adult services provider in Sacramento. With the retirement of former Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bill Clearwater, ACC Care Center Administrator Melanie Segar has been promoted to the COO position. In addition, Tony Waterford has been

promoted to ACC’s Chief Human Resources Officer position; Jennifer Yee has been promoted to ACC’s Accounting Manager position. Please congratulate them for their promotions based on exemplary services to ACC. During the coming months, I will continue to work closely with ACC Board and Staff on the ground breaking of the 102-unit Maple Tree Assisted Living and Memory Care facility. More information will be made available when we have confirmed the date of the ground breaking celebration. Once again, I want to thank all the staff, volunteers and donors for all their dedication to help older adults sustain their independence, lifestyle and dignity as part of the ACC family.

CARE CENTER ADMINISTRATOR BECOMES ACC’S NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

ENGAGING THROUGH MUSIC

ACC is pleased to announce the promotion of Melanie Segar to the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective April 2, 2018. Ms. Segar succeeds former COO Bill Clearwater, who retired from ACC after over 7 years of service on May 4, 2018. Ms. Segar holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. She has over 30 years of management and clinical experience in long term care. Ms. Segar has served as the Administrator for ACC Care Center for nearly 7 years. Ms. Seger played a key role in building a solid management team and helping transform the Care Center into a five-star-rated skilled nursing facility, recognized by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living as a 2016 recipient of Commitment to Quality Award for improving the lives of its residents through quality care. As the new COO, Ms. Segar will be responsible for planning, directing, and managing the overall operations

Greenhaven Terrace meet-and-greet event. Together, the group sang songs from genres that ranged from 1970s folk rock to contemporary hits. “It’s fun to be with the Guitar Ensemble,” Mr. Lam said. “We gel very well together. It’s just a good way to spend Wednesday evening with very talented and fun musicians.” Having been trained in classical music since childhood, Mr. Lam believes in the power of music and its effectiveness in creating new bonds. “Music is a universal language,” he said. “Music helps people come out and be part of a large group, even in an hour’s time. That’s crucial.” A recent study came to a similar conclusion. In 2015, the National Endowment for the Arts released a report that showed how participatory arts programs, including music, benefits older adults’ mental, physical, and social health, regardless of a person’s skill level. Watanabe also emphasized the importance of music in building positive lifelong skills and habits for older adults, especially connecting with each other: “What I enjoy most is that the participants in these groups are getting out and about, learning new music and performing skills. They’re socializing and are giving back to our communities by performing at nursing homes and assisted living facilities.” ACC’s music groups have also performed at Meals on Wheels Cafe sites, church functions, community and government events, and their special performances include museum events and WWII Relocation Camp reunions. Lois Nishimura, a participant in ACC’s music program for nine years, is an active member of ACC music clubs like the ACC Pocket Pickers, Folk Guitar Club, Aunty Amy’s Hula, and the Show Stoppers. However, she states that music was absent for most of her life. “I knew nothing about music before I came to ACC,” she said. “I was so busy raising my kids. But now they’ve grown, and it’s my time to learn.” Watanabe recalls witnessing memorable and touching moments for an ACC music participant: “A member of the ACC Greenhaven Terrace and Happy Strummers Ukulele and Singing Club cried when she saw how happy their music made participants of Triple-R Program (Sacramento’s licensed adult day program) feel.” As a participant in ACC’s music program, Nishimura understands the anxiety common among people who are learning a new skill, or have no musical background. Her advice to new participants or those interested in ACC Music is to just have fun and be open to the opportunity of learning. “You’ve got to try at least one time,” she said. “We always help each other. We’re all growing together here.”

of the ACC Senior Services to ensure financial viability, prudent growth, and quality of care to residents and program participants. Responsibilities will include the daily operational management of ACC Programs, including ACC Care Center, Community Service Programs at ACC Greenhaven Terrace and ACC Assisted Living. Ms. Segar will continue to support ACC Care Center as the interim Administrator of Record until a new administrator is selected.

ACC THROWS NEWSMAKING BIG DAY OF GIVING PARTY

On May 3, 2018, ACC celebrated the Big Day of Giving by throwing a party that literally made the news! From noon to sunset at ACC, music and dance acts entertained guests each hour, including performances by CC Pocket Pickers, Guitar Ensemble, Folk Guitar Club, South Sac Strummerz, Greenhaven Terrace Happy Strummers, and special guests: Bill W & Glenn Watanabe, Aunty Amy’s Hula, Tony Waterford, Maeley Tom, Darrick Lam, the Show Stoppers, SBWA Ukettes, CCC Hula & Ukulele Fellowship, and College Fund Street Band. Special guests stopped by throughout the day, including Tina Macuha of CBS Local’s Good Day Sacramento, who was a guest emcee, as well as the Fox40 news team. Other fun events included a photo exhibit, a Hinamatsuri

doll exhibit and demonstration, and a fashion show. Special thanks to Chef Alfred Yee, sous chef Gee Kong, and their hard-working team of kitchen volunteers who handled the food sales. And thank you to Ted Fong, who wrote, directed, and produced this year’s Big Day of Giving music video. Check it out at Youtube.com by looking up “ACC Senior Shoo Bop.” Overall, the Big Day of Giving Party was a great success! ACC Programs raised over $47,000 to support community programs, including ACC Rides Transportation, the Bridge to Healthy Families Caregiver Support Program, Legacy Corps: Friendly Visitors, Lifelong Learning & Wellness classes and workshops, the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), and Utilities Education & Assistance.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Carol Fong has been an ACC volunteer since 2002. She started as a Fund Development Assistant helping with data entry and filing. And as a retired state employee from the Department of Motor Vehicles, she wanted to continue utilizing those skills at ACC as a volunteer. Carol said she enjoys volunteering at ACC and assisting ACC Rides to achieve its goals in providing rides to seniors who need them most. She also helps out with various events at ACC every year, such as the Crab Feed, Craft & Bake Sale, and other events. Carol’s dedication and time commitment is a big gift to the ACC community.

ACC recently hosted its first ever ACC CEO Gala on Saturday, April 14, 2018 to honor the tremendous work and outstanding leadership of former ACC CEO Dr. Donna L. Yee. The gala took place at the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation, with over 300 guests in attendance, including Sacramento County District 2 Supervisor Patrick Kennedy, City of Sacramento Councilmember Rick Jennings, and other dignitaries in the community. Maeley Tom, known for her decades of mentorship of Asian Americans in local, state and national politics, led the evening as emcee. Guests enjoyed locally produced wine by Wilson Vineyards, and entree choices that included prime rib, shrimp linguine, and vegetarian pasta made by SASF kitchen staff.

Speeches were given by new ACC CEO Darrick Lam, and ACC Board President Winston Ashizawa, who both recognized Dr. Yee’s 17 years of service, and her contributions to the community. Under Dr. Yee’s leadership, ACC grew and developed community programs such as ACC Rides, Bridge to Healthy Families, Meals on Wheels by ACC, Lifelong Learning & Wellness classes, and independent and assisted living services at ACC Greenhaven Terrace and the ACC Care Center (formerly ACC Nursing Home), which offers exceptional rehabilitation and quality nursing services to residents and their family members. As the evening came to a close, Dr. Yee shared her reflections on her tenure at ACC and how her leadership philosophy shaped the organization’s expansion: “ACC’s greatest vulnerability is whether even the least caring staffer

is providing care that keeps residents safe and on the mend. Superstars like the medical director, licensed nurses, and administrators are important, but it is the CNA, the activity leader, the dining assistant, the welcome center volunteer and driver who ‘get the ball down field’ so that care plan and service goals are achieved. Our most visible frontline caregivers make a difference in how and whether a resident is heard.” Net proceeds from the ACC CEO Gala totaled over $65,000 which will be matched by a generous gift to the ACC Capital Campaign by Art and Barbara Tom. The event would not have been possible without 23 gala sponsors and over 50 volunteers. Thank you to everyone who participated in the success of the ACC CEO Gala!

ACC COMPLETES FIRST YEAR AS HIGH SCHOOL WORK-STUDY SPONSOR ACC bids farewell to four student volunteers who spent the school year here under Cristo Rey Sacramento High School’s Work-Study Program. This program allows students to offset their education costs by working five days per month for Sacramento area organizations and businesses. Here at ACC, these students learned important career skills like customer service and clerical support.
