EASY MOVE TO ASSISTED LIVING BRINGS JOY AND HAPPINESS Minnie Iseri wears an infectious smile and exudes energy wherever she goes. Although still independent at the young age of 96, Minnie moved

“After the first year, my mother called me and told me to come home due to threat of war. I stayed one more year to study Japanese and the war started… I couldn’t get back. Instead of going home after two years, I stayed for nine years. I couldn’t go home.”

into ACC Assisted Living from ACC Greenhaven Terrace. Freedom is important to Minnie because of the many situations she has experienced. She recalls the many stages of her life very clearly. Born near Portland, Oregon and raised on a family farm,

Those years away from family were rough for Minnie. “One day I was outside. I looked up and I saw a cloud that didn’t move. A stationary large cloud,” she remembers. She learned the horrible details of that cloud later that day and added “years later Continued page 2

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN MATCHING GIFT SUCCESS

With special accolades and gratitude to Art and Barbara Tom for their visionary leadership and generosity, ACC Senior Services has raised $250,000 since the announcement of the Tom’s Capital Campaign matching challenge gift. We are halfway to matching the $500,000 gift from the Toms and any gift or pledge to the Capital Campaign will count towards the match. Significant progress has been made in preparation for the construction of the new assisted living and memory care facility, as well as the Care Center transformative upgrade construction project.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Winston Ashizawa Happy Holidays as we conclude 2017 – another very good year of progress for ACC and one of thanks for our immediate circle of family and friends… and also our greater ACC family. The volunteers and donors again enhanced the experiences for people receiving services ranging from learning, wellness, exercise, nutrition, housing and health related support. Staff made sure the quality of services remained top notch and we again received awards and recognition. And we are all thinking of how we can continue making improvements in what we do to expand the reach of the special experience we know as ACC Senior Services. As a reminder, with only a few weeks left to 2017, if we haven’t made arrangements for designating required minimum distributions (RMDs) from Individual Retirement Accounts if we are 70½ years old or older, it’s time to hurry, or to get ahead planning 2018 RMDs. Making an RMD or other type of charitable gift to ACC’s Capital Campaign will count double because of the special pledge Art and Barbara Tom made to match up to $500,000 in new contributions and pledges. Some supporters who made a five year pledge but finished it early have already submitted new pledges to take advantage of this opportunity of generosity. New Capital Campaign supporters include five year pledges or one-time gifts of $5,000 or more … quite exciting to see! And planned gifts that provide for ACC in Living Trusts, retirement accounts or insurance policies add to our strength in the future. Those planned gifts can be so simple to

do: the supporter merely indicates their intent to make the arrangements with their trust attorney, or modifies their beneficiary designations to include ACC Senior Services. You may have heard that our esteemed Donna Yee is planning to step down as CEO next year. The Board has been hard at work making plans to ensure a successful transition for the organization. One very important detail is how we can show our appreciation for the many years of tremendous work Donna has given to all of us by having a celebration party. So volunteer party hosts ask you to save the date of April 14, 2018. We have reserved the SASF Gym that Saturday and expect to have a full house. Watch and listen for news on ticket sales to attend this very special event. I expect even more news in 2018 that we can celebrate as ACC continues to make the lives of seniors our top priority!

the devastation of the war.” She describes those war-time days of her life as bad and weird experiences, yet she sees them now as important parts of her life. One thing Minnie knows and desires is her freedom and independence. In Assisted Living, Minnie maintains some independence. Minnie is happy she made the decision moving from Independent Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace to Assisted Living. “I had more freedom downstairs, but that wasn’t the best way since I couldn’t stand on my own. I’m almost 100 and my family couldn’t trust my eating habits. They were afraid to take trips since they couldn’t trust my judgment anymore. I made a good decision moving to Assisted Living. They take care of my health and nutrition. I feel healthy. I feel like one of the young people here. It’s amazing the kind of care they give me, helping me with the rest of my life.” Her favorite activities are going out for lunch with friends. She loves spending time with people and her neighbors say “she’s never home.” Here are some timeless words of wisdom Minnie shares about life as she looks to the future:

“It’s your attitude that helps you overcome and make the best of life.” “We are having so much fun. There’s no need to worry”. Page 2

Living in Assisted Living, Minnie is no longer worried about her two daughters, grandchildren and her infant great grandson. With the gracious support from our donors, Minnie can rest assured that her family knows she is in the best care at ACC Assisted Living. When Minnie first held a copy of ACC’s Capital Campaign brochure with this story and her picture, she beamed with pride and teared up while saying “Look at all these great people next to me! I don’t deserve to be next to them!” William Yee recalled seeing Minnie in “A Few Great Bakeries” documentary on PBS Discovery TV. Her joy and passion for spending time with friends at great local bakeries and restaurants is evident in this video on YouTube (https://youtu. be/5bYXWzkDjLY), where you can watch her wonderful smile and laughter at Mahoroba Japanese Bakery!

WORKSHOP

The Beneficiaries Impact Estate Planning Workshop focuses on helping households apply what they learn in the workshop to their own situation regarding beneficiaries in their estate plan. Instead of teaching at a very technical level regarding the impact of beneficiaries from your estate plans, we aim to educate you and your family to know the financial impact of retirement and beneficiary decisions, and to make those decisions carefully based on sound information. While state retirement and traditional retirement plan benefits are often confusing and difficult to interpret, ACC’s stable of expert speakers are prepared and skilled at breaking down complex concepts into easy-tounderstand language. You will learn how proactive beneficiary decisions can positively affect their overall future financial situation. Speaker Donna Shoiya will present 30 minutes on beneficiaries and 30 minutes on executorships at three workshops: Tuesday, January 23: 3:30 – 5 pm Tuesday, February 13: 3:30 – 5 pm Tuesday, March 13: 3:30 – 5 pm

ACC CARE CENTER RECOGNIZED BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT ACC Care Center has been recognized as a 2017 Top Performing nursing home by U.S. News & World Report for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care. This annual recognition follows the Silver Award for the National Quality Award Program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/ NCAL) and awarded earlier this year to the Care Center. The dual awards set the Care Center apart as one of the four top performing nursing homes in the State of California. Since its inception in 2009, the U.S. News & World Report nursing home ratings have relied on data from Nursing Home Compare (https://www. medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare), a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. The program honors care providers who have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality of care for seniors and persons with disabilities.

With so many technological changes occurring every day in the healthcare industry, nursing homes face continual challenges to maintain top quality care. The ACC Care Center continues to be on the forefront of effective innovations in quality care, as exhibited by humancentered smart lighting solutions in common areas and future patient care improvements with under-bed motion sensor lighting for safe visits to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Physical, occupational and speech therapy services are provided every day in a therapeutic and compassionate skilled nursing environment. “We are honored to be recognized for what we’ve accomplished on our journey to improve quality care,” said Melanie Segar, Administrator of ACC Care Center. “Wow, consecutive years as a Top Performing nursing home and a Silver Award in the same year! Our sustained success is attributed to the highest quality of care demonstrated by ACC Care Center staff 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.”

ACC CELEBRATED 30TH ANNUAL CRAFT AND BAKE SALE It has been 30 years going strong that ACC has been hosting one of the biggest craft and bake sales in the community. Big thanks to all the volunteers, donors and shoppers who came out and supported the event this year. We celebrated our 30th Annual ACC Craft and Bake Sale at ACC Greenhaven Terrace with many colorful knitted and crocheted scarves, beautiful Afghans and throws, handcrafted decorative and household items, various lovely plants, and over twenty-five raffle prizes. The biggest hit of the event was the baked goods and food section. We had a wide selection of sweet delights and delicious food such as turkey sandwich bento, sushi bento, curry korokke and pasta. We look forward to next year’s Craft and Bake Sale with even more new and unique crafts and baked goods. Special thanks to the Craft and Bake Committee for their hard work and commitment in organizing this event: Gary Kikumoto (Chair), Frances Lee, Mickey Yamadera, Jean & James Chew, Holly Fong-Korach, Jane Yokoi, Carol Jung and Franc Martinez.

ARMS AROUND OUR COMMUNITY: Art and Barbara Tom Extending their investments in the ACC Care Center with a $500,000 challenge, Art and Barbara Tom are asking others to match their pledge to the capital campaign. Each gift to the capital campaign will match the Tom pledge up to $500,000. Thank you, Art and Barbara for this visionary gift to accelerate the success of Phase II of the ACC Capital Campaign. An established businessman, Art Tom owned the building where ACC ran BINGO sessions, raising funds to assure that the ACC Care Center could keep its doors open—a 17-year foundation for our relationship. This relationship with ACC, and Art and Barbara’s understanding of the importance of the quality care that the ACC Care Center provides, led them to respond to our capital campaign request. Their leadership gifts to ACC over the past ten years have come at critical times of visionary growth and opportunity.

Thank you for reaching out to put your arms around the aging adults in our communities.

Would you join Art and Barbara by matching their $500,000 capital campaign pledge with your gift ranging from $1,000 - $500,000?

Together we can get our arms around our community Building on 40 years of success, ACC can extend its impact with your support. Successful capital campaigns require two things: leadership and participation. The Toms have challenged us all to participate through their leadership matching gift. Now it’s up to us, one at a time, totaling 276 gifts of varying amounts to make significant improvements at our assisted living and skilled nursing care programs. Will you support the ACC capital campaign and join us in putting our arms around aging adults in our community?

Thanks to you we’ve opened: • Assisted Living at Greenhaven Terrace • ACC Campus

Together we can build:

• A state of the art Care Center • New Assisted Living and Memory Care facility
