Four years ago the Admin offices were pushed out of the nest when community programs and classes needed more space. Some said we needed more space for classes the day we had the grand opening at Park City in 2002. The ACC Board agreed to rent office space for a short term as long as a longer term solution was forthcoming. ACC Rides, Bridge to Healthy Families and caregiver support, and other programs continued to grow. Then Meals on Wheels by ACC was established in 2010. Last year when Ken Murai agreed to help plan for the use of 15,000 square feet, he helped us realize we could not fit everyone in one building: we actually filled the old Park City building (another 6,000 square feet) as well. Since the “big move” in early January 2015, 50 staff and a larger number of volunteers relocated to new offices. Programs and Services, like ACC Rides, Bridge to Healthy Families, TEAM, and Lifelong Learning & Wellness are again co-located with Admin offices at “the Campus” (7334 Park City Drive, across from ACC Greenhaven Terrace). And offices of Meals on Wheels by ACC are now co-located with the City’s Triple R day respite program across the street at 7375 Park City (the previous location of ACC Senior Services Center). “Let’s not do this again too soon” echoed in the hallways as everyone worked hard to assure that every scheduled meal was delivered to each MoW program participant, and minimize the number of classes cancelled or ACC Rides re-scheduled. Everyone (staff, volunteers, and program participants) deserve much thanks and appreciation for their patience, flexibility, and input. Thanks to Ed Kado’s creativity and the diligent team work at Reeve-Knight Construction, the space, clean lines, and fresh look of the Campus will enable ACC to better support the space needs of ACC Programs and Services, improve information and accessibility of the array of services offered by ACC, streamline site management, and increase the efficiency of facility costs. In addition to providing office suites for Admin and Programs staff, the building comprises four classrooms, a computer lab, and a large community room with a connecting patio that can host large events. The building also offers large continued on back page

ACC Senior Services got off to a moving start in the New Year with no time to spare as ACC Programs and Services and the Administration staff moved into the newly remodeled ACC Campus facility located at 7334 Park City Drive. With barely any time to unpack, the building was in full operation with classes resuming, volunteers appearing to support the various ACC programs, and ACC committee members and work groups assembling in various conference rooms to meet and conduct business. Also during that time, offices for Meals on Wheels by ACC were relocated to the former ACC Senior Services Center building at 7375 Park City Drive. The remodeled building will provide the needed space to allow ACC to grow its programs. For their work on this project, appreciation goes to architect Ed Kado, Ken Murai for interior space design, and ACC Board member Howard Harris for overseeing the project. Recognition also goes out to Executive Assistant Merry Chin for her efforts in planning and coordinating the successful move. The recent improvements at the Campus facility come just months after the October kitchen equipment remodeling project at the Nursing Home and the May completion and opening of Assisted Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrance. The ability for ACC to accomplish major projects is the result of careful planning, access to financial reserves, and securing loans. More plans are in the works to improve and renovate resident rooms at the Nursing Home and make additional improvement to the Campus building and exterior grounds.

President’s Message

To fund the purchase of the Campus facility and the recent remodeling projects, a Capital Campaign has been launched by the Board of Directors to ensure that ACC continues to have the financial flexibility to plan additional projects and reduce its debt load. To show their commitment and support, 100% of the directors have made a personal pledge to the Capital Campaign. For ACC to plan and complete its many projects, ACC must rely on the commitment, skills, and leadership of the many directors that serve on the Board. To this end, recognition and appreciation are well deserved for Simon Lee, Evelyn Chin, Lori Lee, and Jean Shiomoto as they complete their service on the Board. Simon Lee served on the Board for five years. He was the Chair the Audit Committee and used his expertise in commercial finance to guide ACC through phases of facility acquisition and development. Simon was always ready to roll up his sleeves for “clean up” duty at the Nursing Home Fundraiser and Crab Feed. During Evelyn Chin’s six years on the Board, she was the Chair of the Nursing Home Committee as well as Co-Chair of the Nursing Home Fundraising Committee and member of the Golf Tournament Committee and Crab Feed Committee. With her attention to detail and excellent organizing skills, Evelyn saw to it that ACC had the necessary resources to operate its programs at the ACC Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, ACC Park City, ACC Greenhaven Terrace, ACC Assisted Living, and ACC Campus. Out-going Board member

Lori Lee served six years on the Board but has been an ACC volunteer dating back to the days of Bingo. She was the Chair of the Volunteer Development Committee and Co-Chair of the Crab Feed and an avid supporter of ACC Special Events including the Golf Tournament and Nursing Home Fundraiser. As a member of the Greenhaven Terrance Committee, Lori provided leadership and support for the delivery of independent senior housing and the establishment of a gym for the residents and the development of ACC Assisted Living. Jean Shiomoto served as President of the Board of Directors for the past two years while juggling a demanding career in State government during her 7seven years on the Board. Her executive skills as Director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles greatly benefited ACC by providing outstanding leadership during a period of tremendous program and facility planning, development, and growth, culminating in the opening of ACC Assisted Living and the ACC Campus facility. Jean was the Chair of the Executive Committee and Board Development Committee in addition to serving as Co-Chair of the Board Capital Campaign and Chair of the Crab Feed Bake Sales. Even though Evelyn, Lori, Simon, and Jean are no longer Board members, ACC is pleased to count on their ongoing commitment to support the ACC mission to serve older adults by expanding services to ensure that a continuum of health and other services are available, accessible and affordable.

Facing Serious Illness: Making Your Wishes Known

Making sure your loved ones and doctors know what kinds of medical treatment you want toward the end of your life is very important. But until recently, there was not a reliable way to do that. That’s where POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) comes in. This form went into effect on October 1, 2014. The intent is for more cohesive and quality conversations to take place about end-of-life care, helping to reduce patient and family suffering. Having an Advance HealthCare Directive may not be enough. Dr. Alan Yee will present information or POLST at ACC Senior Services on April 22 (see info below). Dr. Alan Yee is a certified Pulmonary Physician who is the medical director of the Intensive Care Unit of Sutter Medical Center Sacramento and was also the medical director of the Subacute Care Unit at Sutter General for ten years. In addition, he is also a partner of Pulmonary Medical Associates. Dr. Yee works daily with families and patients facing these critical decisions and will be able to give first-hand insight on this topic.

Heartfelt Gratitude A huge thank you to Dale Yamada, one of many ACC Rides Transportation Services volunteers who will go beyond their duties and responsibilities as a driver. Dale has been volunteering for 6 years! He volunteers two days a week (Monday and Wednesday) and sometimes three days a week, to help us out whenever we are in a bind. Dale also drives ACC Rides clients on holidays so they can continue to go to the doctor for life saving medical treatments such as dialysis and chemotherapy. Please acknowledge Dale for the extra effort he puts in when most of us are home enjoying our day off. You’re awesome Dale! We at ACC Senior Services are very thankful to have you on ACC Rides Team.

The presentation will cover: • What does POLST do and why is it important? • Who should have POLST and is it a requirement? • What do the treatment options mean? • How to complete a POLST. • How is POLST different from an Advance HealthCare Directive?

The crime of the 21st century: Senior Scams by Linda Revilla

$2.9 billion. That’s how much seniors lost to financial scams in 2010 according to a study by MetLife. Financial scams targeting seniors are so prevalent that the National Council on Aging (NCOA) calls them the “the crime of the 21st century.” Income level doesn’t matter as wealthy and low- income seniors are targeted by family members, friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. Often these crimes go unreported because the perpetrator is someone close to the senior. Over 90% of the financial abuse of a senior is at the hands of a family member.

Locally, seniors have been getting calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS and claiming that they owe money. One senior reports that the caller even knew the names of her mother and sister. According to the IRS, the first contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to be by mail. The IRS will also never ask for credit card numbers over the phone or for a pre-paid debit card or a wire transfer.

A few years ago, a senior that I knew got a phone call from her bank asking her to help them catch a dishonest teller. She fell for the scam and withdrew $3,000 from her account to give to the people pretending to be from the bank. She never got her money back, becoming yet another victim of a financial crime.

Your Healthy Heart By Therapy Specialists

Hypertension is the medical term used to describe high blood pressure. It is a common but very serious condition; onethird of American adults and two-thirds of American seniors (those over the age of 65) are affected by hypertension. The human body requires a certain level of blood pressure in order to pump blood throughout the arteries. When the arteries become narrowed, the heart must pump faster in order to carry out the necessary functions of the body. Your blood vessels respond more slowly to a change in body position. Talk to your Nurse, Therapy Specialists’ therapist or your physician if you are feeling lightheaded or off balance when you stand up or change positions. Although high blood pressure usually cannot be cured, in most cases it can be prevented and controlled. Your doctor will work with you to find the proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Treating and preventing high blood pressure rely on the adoption of a healthy lifestyle and the judicious use of anti-hypertensive medications. For patients with hypertension, treating the underlying cause of hypertension is often the best option for long term success. This can be accomplished with changes in diet and lifestyle (quitting smoking, for example) as well as with healthy techniques such as physical therapy. There are a number of physical therapy techniques that can help to lower blood pressure in conjunction with healthy, positive lifestyle changes. Many hypertension patients struggle with weight-related issues or injuries such as neck pain or back pain. Physical therapy can help patients with a wide range of medical conditions to begin an exercise regimen that is safe and effective. Stress relief is another major factor in reducing hypertension. For hypertensive patients who are suffering from anxiety, massage can be a powerful weapon in lowering blood pressure readings. One reason massage is so helpful is that it works to reduce steroid hormones, a good indicator of stress levels. Dwight Makoff, M.D., Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine, says, “It is important to measure the blood pressure in seniors while they are standing in addition to while they are sitting or lying. You see, seniors may have a tendency to develop postural hypotension (excessively low blood pressure in the standing position). The postural hypotension can cause episodes of lightheadedness or falling. To remedy this

situation, the doctor might recommend lower doses of anti-hypertensive medications.” High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work too hard. It also makes the walls of the arteries hard. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, the first- and third-leading causes of death for Americans. High blood pressure can also cause other problems, such as heart failure, kidney disease, and blindness. The best way to prevent or manage high blood pressure is by adopting a healthy lifestyle: o

Following healthy eating patterns: emphasize fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods; eat foods low in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol; eat whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts; reduce fats, red meats, sweets, and sugared beverages.

o

Reducing salt and sodium in your diet: reduce salt intake to less than six grams (one teaspoon) per day from all sources.

o

Maintaining a healthy weight: since blood pressure rises as weight increases, reducing your weight can improve your hypertension, as well as reduce your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

o

Limiting alcohol intake: if you drink alcoholic beverages, have only a moderate amount — one drink a day for women; two drinks a day for men.

o

Quitting smoking: smoking injures blood vessels and speeds up the hardening of the arteries.

o

When a doctor prescribes a regimen of drugs to treat hypertension, it is critical to follow it according to orders, and report any side effects immediately. In all cases, healthy lifestyle changes must accompany treatment with prescription drugs.

o

Being physically active: even the lowest level of physical activity can have a positive impact on health and well-being. Talk to your Therapy Specialists’ Therapist to help you develop a custom program for your interests and abilities.

Making healthy life choices can be an important, easy and enjoyable step towards maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Your Physician, Nurse, and Therapy Specialists therapy team in your community are available to help you make those changes in a safe and sound way. and small conference rooms to provide ample meeting space for the various ACC committees and planning groups. A special feature of the building is the Welcome Center that will offer a place where visitors can meet, greet, and congregate before or after a class or workshop or just sit to socialize in a warm and inviting setting. Another great addition to the building is the must see culinary center with the specially designed classroom and food preparation galley that will be used for cooking classes, demonstrations and other featured food events. Throughout January and February we have hosted a series of tours to welcome and reach out to donors and Visionaries, class participants, MoW and staff at the Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Greenhaven Terrace, Independent Living and Assisted Living residents and family members, Nursing Home family members, and a host of volunteers.
