Assisted Living at Greenhaven Terrace- One Family’s Story By Megan Lucas

With your generous support and encouragement, ACC Senior Services opened Assisted Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace in May of this year with a full spectrum of services to enhance life and to accommodate changing abilities and needs. We’d like to share with you the story of one of our ACC Assisted Living families. At age 101, Kuichi was the oldest and among the first residents Kuichi and GT Assisted Living Staff to move in to ACC Assisted Living. Kuichi had been living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace in an independent senior apartment since 2007. “He liked living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace. It was conveniently close to shopping and the pharmacy. He cooked and shopped for himself up until the age of 100” says his daughter, Barbara Takei. After turning 100, Kuichi began losing interest in shopping and cooking, and began needing reminders to eat. The structure of three meals a day in assisted living helped ensure that he ate regularly. If Kuichi did not show up for meals, they noticed. With observant staff checking on him every few hours, it helped give Barbara peace of mind. Continued on page 5

Attendees enjoying the delicious food

ACC’s 28th Annual Nursing Home Fundraiser was an incredible success thanks to the help of our remarkable volunteers and kind community. The event was hosted at The Sacramento Asian Sport Foundation (SASF), with over 500 in attendance; Mayor Kevin Johnson even made a surprise guest appearance. Hungry guests enjoyed a delicious buffet including a variety of Asian fare donated by local restaurants and cooks. Many gift baskets filled with goodies were laid out for the silent auction. This year in addition to the silent auction, a raffle drawing was introduced. Prizes included a flat screen television, iPad mini, Crab Feed tickets, and more. We thank the restaurants and businesses who contributed to this fundraiser and helped make it another successful ACC event. Please see page 14 and 15 for a list of sponsors, restaurants, businesses, and volunteers that contributed to this year’s fundraiser.

With the end of 2014, I finish my term on the Board of Directors for ACC Senior Services. I served on ACC’s Board for seven years, the last two as the President. It has been an honor to lead ACC, to be a part of a wonderful Board of Directors, and to work with CEO Donna Yee, COO Bill Clearwater, CFO Ray Gee, and all the great staff at the various ACC locations. I became involved with ACC over ten years ago when I was first asked to join the Finance Committee, then to serve on the Audit Committee, and the next thing you know I was on the Board of Directors and helping out at all the fundraisers! My experience with ACC has allowed me to get to know many supporters, volunteers, and staff. I cherish the friendships I have made that will last a lifetime, and I appreciate seeing the commitment, experiencing the dedication, and enjoying the camaraderie of everyone who is involved with ACC. When I was still new to ACC, James Chew walked up to me at an event and asked who I was and what I do. Looking back, I think James already knew that I was the new person on the Board and he warmly welcomed me to ACC. Over the years I have watched James, his wife, and her sisters volunteer at many ACC events as well other events in the community. They never seem to slow down! As the saying goes, “what a small world.” When I joined ACC, I didn’t know that Ralph Sugimoto and Janet Sakata, were also involved with ACC. The three

President’s Message

of us grew up in the Delta, Ralph in Walnut Grove, Janet in Clarksburg and myself in Courtland. Our fathers were best friends and would hang out all the time. Who would have thought that later the three of us would all be so active in ACC? At ACC’s events I love to watch people reconnecting and catching up. When our supporters come to an event, the warm embraces people give each and the laughter from good conversation is hard to miss. When the speaking segments of the program start, it takes a while to get everyone to quiet down! What made the most lasting impression on me about ACC is all the volunteers. While on the Audit Committee, I learned that ACC has approximately 600 volunteers who give over 20,000 hours each year. From committee members, rides drivers, event support, office support and more, there are many activities that are done by volunteers. ACC’s volunteers are invaluable, and I want to give a shout out to everyone for exceptional community service. To give you a quick update on ACC activities, Assisted Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace continues to

sign up new residents. We invite you to make an appointment to visit the new Assisted Living, or attend one of a series of open houses that ACC Senior Services is having for the community. Assisted Living has wonderful and caring staff to assist the residents with their day-to-day needs as well as to coordinate wellness, educational, and recreation activities. As I mentioned in the Summer Newsletter, planning and coordination is underway for the ACC Administrative Offices and the ACC Senior Services Center to move into the ACC Campus site located at 7334 Park City Drive (formerly the Merryhill Middle School). We anticipate the ACC Campus will be ready for occupancy late December or early January. Meals on Wheels by ACC Administrative staff will move into the former ACC Park City location. ACC appreciates the work of Ed Kado and Howard Harris who are working on this project. We will keep you updated on the big move. Many of you know that I am the Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles and have worked at the DMV for 26 years. Twentysix years at one department is a long time, and what has kept me at DMV is a sense of family, which is what I have also experienced at ACC. ACC, with all the staff and volunteers, is a wonderful family. Everywhere you turn, there is someone willing to help out and lend a hand. ACC is a great nonprofit to be involved in, and I am grateful to be a part of this special organization. Thank you and much continued success.

*In the Fall 2014 president’s letter it was mistakenly stated that Jean oversaw 900 DMV employees. The actual number of employees is 9,000.

What’s New in the Lifelong Learning & Wellness Program? By Susan Sarinas, Program Manager On October 9 and 14, we held two Town Hall Meetings at ACC Senior Services Center for all Lifelong Learning & Wellness Program (LLWP) participants. The purpose of the meetings was to update participants on volunteer opportunities, results of the 2014 LLWP survey, class fee changes for 2015, status of the relocation of the Senior Services Center, and MySeniorCenter. With regard to volunteer opportunities, ACC Senior Services Center is looking for people who can provide clerical assistance as office coordinators or LLWP assistants. We are also looking for volunteers who want to share their knowledge/ skills and teach a variety of classes. Some instructor stipends may be available. We had 194 people respond to our 2014 LLWP survey, and we shared the top responses to the various questions at the Town Hall Meetings. Your feedback on these surveys is very important to us. We take your comments and ideas for improvement seriously and are looking at what we can implement in 2015. You will find some new class offerings in 2015 that reflect your suggestions, such as bonsai, brain fitness and walking club. Effective January 1, 2015, unless previously stipulated, the base price for one-hour classes will be $5 per class,

all 1-1/2 hour classes will be $6 per class, and all two-hour classes will be $7 per class. In addition, the drop-in fee will be increased to $2 per class. We encourage everyone to pre-register and pre-pay for all classes. One recurring comment in the surveys was the need for more private rooms and larger rooms for some classes. We showed everyone the plans for the new ACC Senior Services Center and Administration building. Some of the space issues should be addressed with our move to the new building by Spring 2015. The last item covered in our meeting was the use of MySeniorCenter (MSC). Currently, 60% of survey respondents are using MSC to sign in for classes. We would like more people to start using MySeniorCenter. Eventually, we would like to do away with the paper rosters, so that instructors spend less time taking roll and more time teaching. If you are not sure how to use MSC, please see Anna Su at the ACC Senior Services Center (916) 393-9026 x 330. The LLWP survey results are available for viewing at ACC Senior Services Center. We plan to post a more detailed report on the ACC website in the near future.

Are You Ready for Rising Rates? So You’re a Trustee, Now What? Or Are You Still Trying to Select a The Question isn’t IF... The Question is WHEN Trustee? Interest rate changes are notoriously difficult to predict, but given where interest rates sit today, there’s not much question about what direction they may go next. Rising rates bring their own set of questions for investors, though. Questions like: • What wil happen to my fixed income investments when rates rise? • Am I diversified enough? • Is my portfolio allocated correctly? The good news is you can take action to prepare. Talk to your advisor about these possible approaches: 1. Consider Credit-Oriented Sectors - Non-investment grade credit sectors, such as high yield corporate bonds and bank loans generally have been less correlated to interest rates than they have been to the overall economic outlook and corporate earnings. 2. Keep It Short - Short-duration bonds typically have lower sensitivity to interest rates change than their longerduration cousins. 3. Go Global - A global or internationally focusted fixed income fund can potentially capitalize on differing business cycles and economic conditions around the world and may therefore be less impacted by rate changes in the U.S. 4. Take Stock - Hybrid strategies (funds that invest in both stocks and bonds) can capitalize on both the growth potential of equities when rates are rising due to economic growth and the income offered by bonds. 5. Stay Flexible - Multi-sector fixed income funds have the flexibility to invest across various sectors of the fixed income market, and fund managers typically shift the fund’s allocation over time to take advantage of different investment opportunities Is this too confusing already? Bring your questions to this workshop to learn more. Please join us on January 28th, 3:00 at the ACC Senior Services Center to hear Eric Momsen, CFP, CIMA Vice President, Senior Advisor Consultant for Franklin Templeton. He will provide an economic update for 2015 and what strategies to consider in this context.

The trustee is the most pivotal and critical part of any trust. When choosing a trustee, there are important qualities and factors to consider which will be presented at this seminar. The role of the trustee and the importance of that role are virtually unknown to the average person who establishes a trust. This lack of knowledge can lead to adverse consequences. In our discussion, we will provide you with enough knowledge to avoid unintended results for the estate. We will be covering the following areas in our presentation: Factors to consider in choosing a trustee • Family dynamics and relationships • Types of assets Basic revocable trust structures: The “AB” Trust vs. “Power of Appointment” models • What is an “AB” Trust? • What is a Power of Appointment Trust? • Why has the “AB” Trust model become outdated and potentially costly for trust beneficiaries? • How can a trust review prove beneficial? The roles of the initial trustees and the successor trustees • What are the differences between these two roles? • How do you prepare your successor trustee to take on their role? The role of professional fiduciaries • When is it advantageous to hire a professional fiduciary? • What are the additional responsibilities of a professional fiduciary? The role of the successor trustee in special cases such as Special Needs Trusts and Charitable Trusts • What is a Special Needs Trust and a Charitable Trust? • What are the additional responsibilities of a successor trustee in these special cases? Join Kent W. Meyer, Attorney, MBA, PhD, JD, LLM and Steve deGraaf, Charitable Financial Consultant, ChFC, CLPF to learn more.

ACC Senior Services Center Provides Utilities Assistance By Susan Sarinas, Program Manager

“CHANGES”

Since 2011, ACC Senior Services Center has been part of a pilot program offering education and assistance with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) bills to seniors and people with limited English proficiency. The program called Community Help and Awareness of Natural Gas and Electricity Services (CHANGES) is sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and supported by PG&E. This pilot program has been extended through December 2015. As part of the program, ACC offers free workshops to educate consumers about their PG&E gas or electric bills. Workshop topics include: avoiding disconnection, payment options, billing cycles, balanced payment plans, CARE/FERA and other assistance programs, energy conservation, safety and understanding your bills. We do these workshops for community centers, English as second language classes, apartment complexes, church and civic groups. We can have

www.accsv.org

volunteers or staff available to interpret the presentations in various languages. Another unique feature of the program is providing assistance to consumers with disputes, account changes or payment plans. For example, if consumers cannot pay the their bills due to circumstances beyond their control and need to stop the disconnection process, ACC can contact PG&E and arrange a payment plan. We can also help consumers with applying for various assistance programs, like Medical Baseline and the CARE/FERA discount program. One woman called us with a complaint that her bill was too high. However, in my conversation with her she also indicated that she and her disabled son were having headaches. I called PG&E for a safety check, and they sent an inspector who found that her furnace was emitting dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Because she was a low-income customer on the CARE program, I contacted the Energy Saving Assistance Program, and they replaced the client’s furnace free of charge! ACC was selected to be part of the CHANGES pilot because of its successful work with another program sponsored by the CPUC, the Telecommunications Education and Assistance in Multiple-languages (TEAM) program. Similar to the CHANGES program, TEAM provides educational workshops about telephone services and assistance with telephone complaints. ACC has been helping seniors and limited English proficient consumers with their telephone issues since 2009. If you are interested in scheduling a workshop or need assistance with an issue with PG&E, please contact Susan Sarinas at (916) 393-9026 ext. 339, team@accsv.org, or for more information, visit the Utilities Assistance page on ACC’s website: http://www.accsv.org/education-and-classes/utilitiesassistance.php.

Mr. Sunshine By Virginia Wieneke

ACC Rides is lucky to have a pool of 100+ volunteer drivers, escorts, and office helpers, but we have one special volunteer who brings us sunshine even during the rainy season. What would you call someone who has been volunteering for more than 10 years yet has not experienced getting wet from the rain even once? The ACC Rides Team calls him our Mr. Sunshine. Marty Yasuda has never experienced the anguish of driving in the rain as it is always sunny when he comes to volunteer on Wednesdays. Even during

Marty Yasuda

the rainy season, the sun peeks out to greet him when he is on the road. On one occasion, it started pouring right after he was finished with his route and was getting ready to go home. We, at ACC Rides, asked him to drive more often, especially during the rainy season so he can spare other drivers the experience of getting rained on. However, since we are experiencing drought, we advise him to volunteer whenever he is available. Let’s face it we need rain – Marty brings sunshine!

Congratulations to the ACC Pocket Pickers for being selected as Honorees for the 8th Annual Heroes of Human Services Award on October 7th!

Jimmie Yee and the ACC Pocket Pickers

The award was presented by the Sacramento Board of Supervisors Jimmie Yee for District 2 in recognition for the Pocket Pickers’ efforts in touching the lives of others through their advocacy, service, and support in the community. Since January 2009, the Pocket Pickers have performed at many functions such as Church festivals, nursing homes, and many church charities. Their music consists of classic songs from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and also numerous Hawaiian songs. Today, the group consists of 15 individuals. In addition to singing and playing the ukulele, they incorporate other instruments such as the banjo, piano, guitar, drum, and bass. The ladies also perform Hula dances for the Hawaiian songs. Members of the Pocket Pickers are Arnie Marks and Jeff Lee (Co-Chairs), Frank Yamanaka (Music Coordinator), Glenn Watanabe (Advisor), Art Imagire, Esther Hokama, Fran Sumida, George Kashiwagi, Amiko Kashiwagi, Jack Carter, Lois Nishimura, Roberta Yee, Susan Dileanis, Peter Dileanis, Loretta Lew, and Mitzi Eiri.

Charitable IRA Rollover – Status Update

November 2014 Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) more commonly known as the Charitable IRA Rollover was a temporary tax provision that allowed IRA owners or beneficiaries who were age 70 ½ or older at the time of distribution to contribute up to $100,000 of their IRA directly to charity. The benefit of this provision was that the charitable donation from the IRA would satisfy a required minimum distribution (RMD), however the IRA distribution to charity would not increase the donor’s taxable income and would be tax free. The Charitable IRA Rollover provision expired after December 31, 2013 and as of today, Congress has not yet reinstated it. Congress has a history of allowing the provision to expire and then renewing it, usually retroactively, to the beginning of the year. There is no

guarantee; however it is believed Congress will likely reinstate the Charitable IRA Rollover at some point. You may still make charitable contributions with your RMDs as follows: 1) take the RMD distribution as income; then 2) make a charitable contribution to a qualified charitable organization who will then issue a tax receipt. When you file your taxes, the “donation” which is tax deductible, will offset the taxes on the IRA distribution. We will continue to monitor the status of the Charitable IRA Rollover provision and provide you with updates when available. If you have questions regarding this or other charitable donation options, please contact Brenda Page, ACC Fund Development Officer at 916-394-6399, ext. 124 or e-mail: bpage@accsv.org.

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE! On Saturday, 09/27/14, at the State Capitol, the ACC Bridge to Healthy Families team participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Over 350 teams and 3,444 walkers at the Walk helped to raise more than $349,000 to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2013, our team raised $915 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, so our goal this year was to raise $1200. With your support, we were able to exceed our goal by over 46% and raise a total of $1758! Special thanks to Anna Su, who personally raised the majority of the donations and became a member of the Champions Club. As a vendor partner, a percentage of the total we raised will come back to ACC to support the Bridge to Healthy Families program. If you haven’t donated, there is still time to support this great cause. We will continue collecting donations through the end of December 2014. For more information, contact Susan Sarinas at (916) 393-9026 ext. 339, ssarinas@accsv. org, or visit ACC’s team page: http://act.alz.org/goto/ACCBHF.
