A little bit of history

There has been a settlement here since Saxon times and Kensington is referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086. The area has been home to royalty since the 17th century and Queen Victoria was born in Kensington Palace in 1819. It was at Victoria’s request that Kensington became an official ‘Royal Borough’ on her death in 1901. The rich and famous flock to the area, with prominent residents including Richard Branson, Rowan Atkinson and James Dyson.

Kensington is one of the most expensive areas in London and property here comes at a premium. It is best known for its elegant Georgian townhouses, many with distinctive white stucco frontages, but striking red brick Victorian mansion blocks, charming mews houses and luxury new build apartments also form a key part of the architectural landscape.

10 www.hamptons.co.uk

Why move to Kensington?

There is truly something for everyone here, with an array of boutiques and shops, high-end restaurants, world class museums and lavish properties. Kensington also borders many of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, including Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Earl’s Court and Notting Hill.

Kensington High Street is home to many firm favourites such as H&M, Waterstones and Decathlon, while Kensington Church Street has an array of independent boutiques and specialty stores, selling everything from clothing and homeware at Cologne & Cotton to fresh local produce at Chegworth Farm Shop.

Exhibition Road in South Kensington is home to such internationally renowned institutions as the Natural History and Science Museums, Imperial College London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is the world’s largest art and design museum. The area is also home to the Olympia exhibition centre which is serviced by Kensington (Olympia) overground station.

Interview with ‘Innovative Designs’

Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project?

Each project comes with a uniqueness to it. There can be multiple challenges associated with the conducting of a project that an individual might not be aware of. An interior designer comes with years of educational and practical experience that will assist in being able to identify, assess and create all aspects of the project, creating just the luxurious house you had envisioned for. Our designers will begin by conducting a meeting with the client on site, understanding the clients concepts/requirements and then implement this in the space that we are working with. When this becomes challenging, our designers’ expertise plays a pivotal role as they have the ability to suggest and advise on the next best alternatives.

What type of projects get you most excited?

Innovative Designs thrives on being able to deliver an immaculate service and a brilliant product. We are leaders in the bespoke joinery market and have worked on over 1000+ projects across London and surrounding the M25. We are experts in our work and love to work on the most challenging of projects. The bigger the project the more scope that we have as a company in executing the brilliance of our products.

The products we work on can range from luxury Walk In Wardrobes, TV Media Units, Home Offices, Utility rooms, Kitchens and other bespoke joinery.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

Innovative Designs has been creating furniture for over 20 years, but have acquired our inspiration from our parent company “Trade Flooring”. Trade Flooring is a company that supplies, distributes and fits bespoke flooring. From Engineered Wood, laminate, LVT, Chevron, herringbone and many more. Trade Flooring is pioneering and is also one of the industry leaders. Being in operation for more than two decades and having a very respectable portfolio

from “Baby Dior” to “ Bhudda Bar” it is evident that “Trade Flooring” strive in delivering a quality product and service that we aspire to.

The interior design industry is inspirational by creating styles and identifying various personalities and characters. Alongside the development of technology and travel, integrating a diverse range of arts and knowledge to your home interior. A key role model and influence is “ The House in Good Taste” by Elsie De Wolfe, an empowering book, cultivating contemporary ideas and American décor for current interior designers. As famously stated “Good taste can be developed in anyone, just as surely as good manners are possible to anyone. And good taste is as necessary as good manners”. The theories have influenced the business dealings from a niche set of luxury clients and designing their affluent homes.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?

Innovative Designs take great pride and joy in showcasing our talents and offerings to our clients. We take the lead effort in demonstrating our capabilities and offerings. This then transitions to a collaborative effort between the managers, the design team, the client and our build team. The attributes of a successful project depend upon the successful communication between all parties.

Is there a project that you are most proud of? We have built a reputation in the industry and have a vast portfolio of commendable projects. Innovative Designs took great pride in furnishing 3 storey property. We began from the basement, building 3 units: a kitchenette with LED Lighting and quartz worktops, a utility room with inbuilt steamer/washer and dryer unit, and a gym unit. The first floor consisted of a shaker style walk in closet manufactured in our premium Xylocleaf material with a range of accessories. We then made our way to the second floor where we had built a corner wardobe. The client was not only thrilled with the end result but also impressed with the quality and lead time. www.innovative-designs.co.uk

Chic, educational, and vibrant are just some of the ways to describe London’s South Kensington neighborhood. The neighborhood, part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, has long been associated with culture and luxury spurned by the extensive construction of museums and real estate following the Great Exhibition of 1851. You’d be hard-pressed to find another enclave of the city with such a dense cluster of cultural and academic institutions, from world-class galleries to prestigious universities. It’s also an elegant residential area that attracts the attention of visitors and residents alike.

South Kensington is bordered by equally stylish neighborhoods. It lies north of Chelsea, south of Hyde Park, west of Knightsbridge, and east of Earls Court. Its position in London places it in a prime location near the center of the action! An array of shops, museums, parks, restaurants, and theatres give the area its dynamic character, and make it one of the most popular real estate markets in London. Visitors come for the upscale boutiques, art galleries, antiques dealers, and designer furnishing retailers. Francophiles will love South Kensington for its French influence. As well as the many French expatriates who live here, you’ll find the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle secondary school, the French Institute, and the Consulate General of France in London. To help you visualize the neighborhood, our video guide of Kensington covers the region and the bordering neighborhood of Chelsea.

You’ll feel like a local when you explore the culinary, shopping, and sightseeing delights of South Kensington!

There’s no better way to live like a local than to go where the locals go, including coffee shops, restaurants, and pubs! Thankfully, South Kensington has plenty to offer. The difficult part will be choosing which to sample first!

Interview with GESTALT DEVELOPMENTS

Tell us a little about the background of your business?

Having grown up in the Kensington and Chelsea borough, I was surrounded by all sorts of varying architecture - everything from classical townhouses to the brutalist Trellick Tower. It always fascinated me that beautiful buildings come in all forms and shapes, and that the way people live in their homes is often enabled, or constricted, by the space around them. This fueled a passion for design, and after working in architectural practices across the city, Gestalt Developments was born out of the desire to fuse aesthetic spaces with purposeful meaning for Londoners.

What range of skills and services does Gestalt Developments offer? Gestalt Developments offers a full end-to-end residential architectural service - from proposing design concepts, creating plans, managing planning applications, designing interiors and executing the build side of a project.

What type of project do you most enjoy working on?

We love working with people who are looking for something beyond the norm. Just being at home should instill a sense of serenity, while simultaneously allowing us to live our daily lives in the most functional way possible. Across all of our projects, that means a beautiful bespoke aesthetic, combined with maximising the potential utility of a space to meet future living needs. Understanding our clients is key - some of our clients are avid cooks, some have teenage children. Some like to host and have friends over some have elderly parents that visit. Some are international clients that use the space as a home when they are in London for business. We take the time to understand what our customers need and propose creative solutions.

Most recently, we have also started to introduce concepts of healthy home design into our projects. Wellbeing has been a bit of a trend, however how this applies to our homes has typically been overlooked. Designing healthy homes involve choosing natural materials that improve indoor air quality, restoring the balance of nature with our internal spaces, and considering optimal ways to minimise the impact of potential toxins such as lead in old water pipes and electromagnetic fields. Having a healthy home is important for all - but especially so for those with young children or with compromised health. We’re excited to create healthier homes for those that want to go that bit further.

How much lead time to you usually need before starting a project?

It varies depending on season and scope of the project, but on average we can get started within 3-6 weeks.

Why should Hamptons clients choose Gestalt for their renovation work?

We have a real passion for designing truly useful spaces, combined with beautiful aesthetics and personal comfort in mind. Each site and project is different and we put all our efforts ensuring our clients are left with a home they will love and appreciate for years to come.

The Albert Memorial

The Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens is one of London’s most ornate monuments. It commemorates the death of Prince Albert in 1861 of typhoid. The Albert Memorial is located in Kensington Gardens on Albert Memorial Road opposite the Royal Albert Hall. It is one of London’s most ornate monuments, designed by George Gilbert Scott. Influenced by the series of 13th Century Eleanor Crosses (Charing Cross perhaps being the most famous) and other statues in Edinburgh and Manchester, the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens is one of the grandest highVictorian gothic extravaganzas anywhere.

Wetherby Kensington is an independent Pre-Prep in the heart of Kensington and Chelsea, for boys aged 4-8 years old.

We are ASPIRATIONAL

Academic excellence is central to Wetherby Kensington; we aim to develop and foster intellectual curiosity so that boys can thrive at school and beyond. Our aim is for the boys to develop a love of learning and therefore become adept at learning. The boys benefit from varied and stimulating teaching where high expectations for all underpins each lesson. We expect all boys to be engaged with their learning and we give regular feedback so that they can develop and improve. Effort is fundamental to our values at Wetherby Kensington and all boys are rewarded for their hard work, dedication and resilience. We firmly believe that our academic results are a product of the philosophy that all pupils can improve at every stage of their education.

We are COMPASSIONATE

Pastoral care and wellbeing are the pillars of Wetherby Kensington, alongside academia. We are a listening school: staff take care to foster strong, trusting relationships based on mutual respect and kindness with pupils, starting in the Reception years. Pupils know who to go to if they have a worry or concern, as do parents. Many initiatives take place to develop wellbeing and positive mental health, such as Eco Week, Healthy Minds and Bodies Week. These events run alongside a robust PHSE programme, where healthy relationships, keeping safe and being kind are just some of the themes covered. Pupils are given a range of opportunities to develop curiosity,

resilience and to take risks, thus building self confidence and self awareness.

We are CURIOUS

At Wetherby Kensington we aim to ignite boys’ imagination with our after-school clubs. An after-school club is a great way for children to unwind at the end of a busy day as well as introducing them to new and exciting skills and activities. It is also a fantastic way for boys to socialise with other year groups and classes in the school. Clubs change on a termly basis, however the ‘core’ clubs, held by external professionals, include Science Club, Martial Arts, Coding Club and Chess Club.

Teachers in school are encouraged to run clubs and have previously included: Dodgeball Club, Creative Writing Club,

Reading Club, Art Club, Film Club, Italian Club and many more! Clubs are held on a first come first serve basis and run from 3:45pm-4:45pm each day. Clubs at Wetherby Kensington are offered to boys in Year 1 upwards.

Registration takes place from birth, however if you wish to register for any other Reception entry group or mid school vacancy, please contact our school Registrar, Miss Peel, on 02039109760 or email her on registrar@wetherbykensington.co.uk

We are RESILIENT

At Wetherby Kensington we believe that physical education and sport have a vital role to play in the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children. Physical education and sport are important in giving children the knowledge, understanding and the tools to make informed choices about healthy living and have a positive impact on their own health and well-being.

The physical education curriculum at Wetherby Kensington aims to provide for boys’ increasing self- confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. Boys will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sports and physical activities, carried out in a safe and supportive environment, where effort and hard work, as well as success, is celebrated and enjoyment and working together is promoted. The boys at Wetherby Kensington participate in numerous

different sports including, football, tag-rugby, cricket, athletics, hockey, swimming, gymnastics and dodgeball. All boys are involved in a swimming, gym and games lesson each week.

Physical education at Wetherby Kensington is not only a vital subject within the national curriculum, but also integral in the development of a healthy and happy life. If pupils can be encouraged to take part in physical activity in a fun and enjoyable environment, then this will excite them to continue to be active throughout their school years and beyond.

We are EXPRESSIVE

The Arts play a central part in school life at Wetherby Kensington with all boys being taught music, drama and art by specialist teachers. Lessons are often linked to class topics, contributing to a holistic approach to learning; this, along with activities based around an eclectic mix of composers and artists, both old and new, make for a

broad and enriching curriculum. Music and drama help to build confidence and communication skills and the huge benefits of music on academic progress and general well-being are widely acknowledged. From Year 1, boys have access to instrumental lessons given by a highly qualified team of visiting teachers. Singing plays such an important role in education for this age group, and with three choirs at Wetherby Kensington, singing is at the heart of school life. Productions, concerts and assemblies throughout the school year enable the boys to have many performing opportunities, both formal and informal; their experience culminates in the Year 3 leavers’ production taking place at the Tabernacle theatre in Notting Hill. Wetherby Kensington is well resourced, with three pianos, two dedicated peripatetic teaching rooms and a huge range of percussion instruments. The boys benefit from workshops led by prestigious groups such as the Galliard Ensemble and African Activities and we take advantage of being a central London school with trips to events such as LSO Discovery concerts at the Barbican or to the Royal Opera House; these are invaluable and inspiring experiences for the boys. We encourage every boy to participate in the Arts; it is a journey of discovery for all, and for some, it is an opportunity to shine.

Planning and Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
