moreA series of poly(trimethylene‐co‐butylene terephthalate) (PTBT) copolymers were prepared by direct esterification followed by polycondensation. The composition and sequence distribution of the copolymers were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results demonstrate that the synthesized PTBT copolymers are block copolymers and the content of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) units incorporated into the copolymers is always less than that in the polymerization feed. The 1,4‐butanediol consumption by a side reaction leads to a relatively lower content of PBT units in the resultant copolymers. At the same time, the PBT and poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) sequence length distributions in the copolymers are different. The PBT segments favor a longer sequence length than do the PTT segments in their corresponding enriched copolymers. The crystallization rate of the copolymers becomes lower than the homopolymers, especially for PTT‐enriched copolymers. Compared with the PTT segment, the presence of PBT segments in the copolymers seems to accelerate crystallization. A wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis indicates PTT and PBT units do not co‐crystallize. The reduced melting temperatures of the copolymers may be attributed to a smaller lamellar thickness and lateral size due to short sequence lengths.

moreABSTRACT Liquid crystalline solutions of poly (p-phenylene benzoxazole) (PBO) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) were prepared and studied. The typical banded texture and disclination of sheared PBO/PPA solution were observed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and the microstructure of the periodic aligned polymer chain that induced the texture was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spherulite structure was found in the PBO/PPA system with little shearing. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis on the system revealed the existence and melting behavior of two ordered phases. An exothermic peak at 85°C was interpreted as the enhancement of the interaction between PBO molecules and PPA solvent, and the endothermic peaks at 140 to 150°C and 180 to 200°C are explained as the melting of the ordered phases. The changes of small-angle light scattering (SALS) patterns of PBO/PPA solution at different temperature further supported these results.

moreTo observe whether Tutin microinjection into the pontine NPBM respiratory area of rabbit will cause morphological damage to that area two hours later. At two hours after the microinjection of Tutin into NPBM, the experimental effects on respiration came to be remarkable and the physiological condition was well, the rabbit was subjected to morphological sampling then. The sample was cut into slices for LM (Nissl dyeing) and transmission EM observation and photography. Under the LM and EM examination, no remarkable morphological damage done by Tutin microinjection into the pontine NPBM was observed. By comparing the Tutin-injected side with the other side of NPBM where equal normal saline microinjection was given, no apparent morphological difference could be found. In our experiment condition, there was no morphological damage caused by Tutin microinjection into pontine NPBM respiratory area of the rabbit.

moreIn wireless sensor networks, an efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is critical, especially in terms of energy consumption and message latency. This paper introduces a novel protocol that nodes periodically sleep to conserve energy. When the source node has data packets to send, it uses a wakeup message to awake the sleeping nodes. The protocol needn’t take the synchronization which must be achieved in S-MAC. It especially suits to the wireless sensor networks with narrow bandwidth.

moreAromatization of methanol over co-impregnated La/Zn/HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst was studied. The selectivity of aromatics and BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) reached 64.0% and 56.6%, respectively, using La/Zn/HZSM-5 at 437 °C, 0.1 MPa and methanol WHSV (weight hourly space velocity)0.8 h−1. Catalytic results showed that the La species was a very good promoter, increased selectivity of aromatics, and prolonged the catalyst lifetime on stream. The effects of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio in zeolite, Zn and La loading, WHSV, reaction temperature, water content in the feed and H2 pretreatment of catalysts on the catalytic performance were studied in detail. Characterizations of the catalysts by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption), SEM (scanning electron micrograph), N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF (X-ray fluorescence), were carried out to understand the structure and discuss the aromatization performance of La/Zn/HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst.

moreABSTRACT Microbial interaction, such as species competition and symbiotic relationships, plays important role to enable microorganisms to survive by establishing a homeostasis between microbial neighbors and local environments. Thanks to the recent accumulation of large-scale high-throughput sequencing data of complex microbial communities, there are increasing interests in identifying microbial interactions. Computational methods for microbial interactions inference are currently focused on the similarity among microbial individuals (i.e. cooccurrence and correlation patterns), however, less methods considered the dynamics of a single complex community over time. In this paper, we propose to use a multivariate statistical method - Multivariate Vector Autoregression (MVAR) to infer dynamic microbial interactions from the time series of human gut microbiomes. Specifically, we apply MVAR model on a time series data of human gut microbiomes which were treated with repeated antibiotics. The referred microbial interactions identify novel interactions which may provide a novel complementary to similarity or correlation-based methods.

morePorous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) were used as the support to prepare platinum (Pt) catalyst (Pt/PCNFs) for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. As a comparison, Pt supported on carbon black (Vulcan XC-72) (Pt/Vulcan) was also synthesized by the same ethylene glycol reduction method. Platinum was more uniformly deposited on PCNFs than that on the Vulcan XC-72. The electrocatalytic activity and stability of the resultant catalysts along with the commercial one (JM20) were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) with a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The Pt/PCNFs exhibited much-enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability compared with the Pt/Vulcan and JM20. The mass activity (at 0.80 V) of Pt/PCNFs is 2.6 times higher and 20% higher than that of Pt/Vulcan and JM20, respectively; the Pt/PCNFs retained about 50% of ECSA whereas JM20 and Pt/Vulcan kept only 25% and 5% of ECSA, respectively, even after 1000 cycles. Furthermore,...

moreMuscle force output is an essential index in rehabilitation assessment or physical exams, and could provide considerable insights for various applications such as load monitoring and muscle assessment in sports science or rehabilitation therapy. Besides direct measurement of force output using a dynamometer, electromyography has earlier been used in several studies to quantify muscle force as an indirect means. However, its spatial resolution is easily compromised as a summation of the action potentials from neighboring motor units of electrode site. To explore an alternative method to indirectly estimate the muscle force output, and with better muscle specificity, we started with an investigation on the relationship between architecture dynamics and force output of triceps surae. The muscular architecture dynamics is captured in ultrasonography sequences and estimated using a previously reported motion estimation method. Then an indicator named as the dorsoventrally averaged motion profile (DAMP) is employed. The performance of force output is represented by an instantaneous version of the rate of force development (RFD), namely I-RFD. From experimental results on ten normal subjects, there were significant correlations between the I-RFD and DAMP for triceps surae, both normalized between 0 and 1, with the sum of squares error at 0.0516±0.0224, R-square at 0.7929±0.0931 and root mean squared error at 0.0159±0.0033. The statistical significance results were less than 0.01. The present study suggested that muscle architecture dynamics extracted from ultrasonography during contraction is well correlated to the I-RFD and it can be a promising option for indirect estimation of muscle force output.

moreThis study investigated hypoxia related changes in the human brain function through EEG analysis with the method of Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC) and approximate entropy (ApEn). Meanwhile, multichannel human EEG signals were studied topographically in 3 healthy subjects under normal and different hypoxia conditions respectively. It was found that when subjects were at the simulated altitude of 3000 m, the measure of LZC and ApEn increased in almost all channels. The results also show that after 15 days hypoxic training, the LZC measure and ApEn decreased obviously and almost the same as those in normal condition. This suggests that after hypoxic training, the subjects were almost adapted to the hypoxia environment. In addition, the complexity measure was calculated and compared in each sub frequency band. We propose that LZC and ApEn can be used to evaluate the effect of brain functional changes at different levels of hypoxia and hypoxic training is an effective means to prevent hypox...

moreAbstract The use of atomic force microscope (AFM) as a nanomanipulator has been evolving for various kinds of nanomanipulation tasks. Due to the bow effect of the piezo scanner of the AFM, the AFM space is different from the Cartesian space. In this paper, different 3-D nanomanipulation tasks using AFM such as nanolithography, pushing and cutting are discussed. 3-D path planning are performed directly in the AFM space and the 3-D paths are generated based on the 3-D topography information of the surface represented in the AFM ...

moreThe high-resolution X-ray imaging system employing synchrotron radiation source, thin scintillator, optical lens and advanced CCD camera can achieve a resolution in the range of tens of nanometers to sub-micrometer. Based on this advantage, it can effectively image tissues, cells and many other small samples, especially the calcification in the vascular or in the glomerulus. In general, the thickness of the scintillator should be several micrometers or even within nanometers because it has a big relationship with the resolution. However, it is difficult to make the scintillator so thin, and additionally thin scintillator may greatly reduce the efficiency of collecting photons. In this paper, we propose an approach to extend the depth of focus (DOF) to solve these problems. We develop equation sets by deducing the relationship between the high-resolution image generated by the scintillator and the degraded blur image due to defect of focus first, and then we adopt projection onto con...

moreThe first several months of life are a critical period for neuronal plasticity in the visual cortex during which anatomic and physiological development depends on visual experience. In cats, electrophysiologically assessed neuronal plasticity is minimal until approximately 3 weeks, peaks at 5 weeks, gradually declines to low levels at 20 weeks, and disappears at approximately 1 year of age (Daw, 1994). Rearing in darkness slows the entire time course of this critical period, such that at 5 weeks of age, normal cats are more plastic than dark-reared cats, whereas at 20 weeks, dark-reared cats are more plastic (Mower, 1991; Beaver et al., 2001). Thus, a stringent criterion is that genes that are important for plasticity in visual cortex will show differences in expression between normal rearing and dark rearing that are of opposite direction in young versus older animals. The present study reports the identification by differential display PCR of Munc13-3, a mammalian homolog of the C...

moreThis paper implements the real-time face detection system with the Cascade Adaboost algorithm on the DSP platform (TMS320DM64x). Aiming at the feature extraction of the algorithm and cascade multiple classifiers, algorithm level optimization and implementation level optimization are proposed on DSP, such as floating-point to fixed-point Conversion (FFC), loop unrolling, software pipeline and linear assemble language optimization. The experimental result indicates that the system can detect any number of faces with any size at any position in a 320×240 image at a speed of 15 fps. The detection system can achieve a detection rate of 89.5%. The real-time face detection is implemented.

moreMetabolism is the major output of the circadian clock in many organisms. We developed a computational method to integrate both circadian gene expression and metabolic network. Applying this method to zebrafish circadian transcriptome, we have identified large clusters of metabolic genes containing mostly genes in purine and pyrimidine metabolism in the metabolic network showing similar circadian phases. Our metabolomics analysis found that the level of inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP), an intermediate metabolite in de novo purine synthesis, showed significant circadian oscillation in larval zebrafish. We focused on IMP dehydrogenase (impdh), a rate-limiting enzyme in de novo purine synthesis, with three circadian oscillating gene homologs: impdh1a, impdh1b and impdh2. Functional analysis revealed that impdh2 contributes to the daily rhythm of S phase in the cell cycle while impdh1a contributes to ocular development and pigment synthesis. The three zebrafish homologs of impdh are l...

moreThis paper reports a novel method to classify EEGs from subjects under normal and hypoxia conditions, which provides a potential efficient method to evaluate hypoxia in real time. The EEG data are collected from 3 healthy subjects while their neurobehaviors are evaluated to assess the degree of hypoxia. The specific energy in a sub-band of 30-60 Hz of the Hilbert Huang transform is extracted as the features. A linear discriminant classifier is utilized for classification. The experimental results show that the hypoxia EEG can be distinguished from normal one for individuals and the classification accuracy varies with the degree of hypoxia

moreSpermatogenesis is a process in adult male mammals supported by spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). The cultivation of SSCs has potential value, for example for the treatment of male infertility or spermatogonial transplantation. Testicular interstitial fluid was added to culture medium to a final concentration of 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40%, in order to investigate its effects on proliferation of mouse SSCs in vitro, Alkaline phosphatase (AKP) assay, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis and indirect immunofluorescence of cells were performed to identify SSCs, and the proliferation rate and diameters of the SSCs colonies were measured. The results showed that the optimal addition of testicular interstitial fluid to culture medium was 30%. When medium supplemented with 30% testicular interstitial fluid was used to culture mouse SSCs, the optimum proliferation rate and diameter of the cell colonies were 72.53% and 249 μm, respectively, after 8 days in culture, values that were significant higher than those found for other groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, proliferation of mouse SSCs could be promoted significantly by supplementation of the culture medium with 30% testicular interstitial fluid. More research is needed to evaluate and understand the precise physiological role of testicular interstitial fluid during cultivation of SSCs.

moreMud crab reovirus (MCRV) is the causative agent of a serious disease with high mortality in cultured mud crab (Scylla serrata). This study sequenced and analyzed 12 genome segments of MCRV. The 12 genome segments had a total length of 24.464 kb, showing a total G+C content of 41.29% and predicted 15 ORFs. Sequence analysis showed that the majority of MCRV genes shared low homology with the counterpart genes of other reoviruses, e.g., the amino acid identity of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) was lower than 13.0% compared to the RdRp sequences of other reoviruses. Nucleotide and amino acid sequences of RdRp and capping enzyme suggested MCRV as a single group. Further genome-based phylogenetical analysis of conserved termini and reovirus polymerase motif indicates that this MCRV belongs to a new genus of the Reoviridae family, tentatively named as Crabreovirus.

moreAlthough heparin plays an important role in bovine sperm capacitation, there is no direct evidence for a role in embryonic development. The present study was designed to examine the effect of heparin on early development of bovine zygotes obtained by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Spermatozoa were treated with or without heparin, and the ICSI ova were cultured in a chemically defined medium + BSA, with or without heparin. Treatment of spermatozoa with heparin before ICSI or heparin in post-ICSI culture medium for 18 or 24h had a beneficial effect on pronuclear formation, cleavage rate (63% versus 76-83%), and number of cells in blastocysts (68 cells versus 82-109 cells; P < 0.05).
