Hungarian humour went through significant changes in the 20th century. Though the urban middle-class way of living and culture had developed by the early 20th century, they had to coexist all over the country as well as in ethnic Hungarian territories abroad with the traditions of rural culture and folklore until the middle of the century. Consequently, Hungarian humour is made up of two important layers of folklore: popular funny stories that have been developing among the peasantry for centuries, and jokes, a genre that emerged from urban oral culture in the last third of the 20th century. In this paper, we examine the thematic categories of this genre of popular and urban humour and their popularity.

The paper digs into the similarities and dissimilarities between Francis Scott Fitzgerald's short short story « Dearly Beloved » and its two French translations by Jean Quéval (1977) and by Jacques Tournier (1991) respectively. The original text and its two translations are presented synoptically to facilitate the scanning of the merits of the translations. These are examined through four main filters: names, tenses, fidelity to the original, and tropes. They let appear a number of weaknesses which, because they sometimes foil the meaning of the original text, have led to a new translation which makes use of the two preceding translations, and improves them where necessary.

A dolgozat tárgya a szomszédi kapcsolatokról, a szomszédokról a közmondásokban tükröződő kép, a teljesség igénye nélkül. A vizsgált közmondásanyag kiválasztása szükségszerűen szubjektív.
A vizsgált anyag három csoportra oszlik.
A közmondások második csoportjában a szomszéd szóval pozitív konnotáció társul.
Jószomszédi viszony:
Csak jó a jó szomszéd
Jó szomszédság nagy boldogság
Együvé tartozás, segítőkészség:
Jó szomszéd a rosszból is jót csinál
Jó szomszédnak jó a szomszédja is
A szomszéd rétje mindig zöldebb
Dögöljék meg a szomszéd tehene
Gazdagabb a szomszéd vetése

Until recently, jokes received less attention than other short epical genres recently because they are assumed to lack seriousness, and because of their potential rudeness. However, jokes hold up a mirror to society. Marital fidelity is a frequent and popular theme in such jokes. This chapter will attempt to answer some fundamental questions about infidelity as the subject of jokes.

The subject of this study is a particular way of twisting French proverbs by using more than one phraseological unit (of which at least one is a proverb or a proverb pattern). Let us name that phenomenon mixing (rather than contamination ) (these terms have already had such use, and its result a compound proverb . I have gathered 70 French compounds from printed sources and the internet. The space limits do not allow giving an English translation for the proverbs and the compounds.
The universality of proverbs is now common place. Their twisting has also a long history: Erasmus already draws attention to games consisting in putting proverbs into contexts they do not fit into. Mixing is probably as old as proverbs are.
In this study, no difference will be made between “proverbe” and “dicton”, though they are often differentiated in French: I will call both genres “prov-erbs”. Also for simplicity’s sake, “proverbial expression” will be used for all non-proverbial phraseological units.

Mi a közmondás? A 2., 3., 4.

- sur la différence (bien connue) entre les fonctions syntaxiques sujet et objet d'une part, et les formes nominatif et accusatif d'un mot d'autre part ;

Though they are universal in time and space, anti-proverbs and ways of twisting proverbs have not been studied much. Therefore, this article aims at examining them from various points of view: link between themes and stylistic labels of anti-proverbs, stylistical ways of twisting (in decreasing order of frequency: substitution, addition, permutation, suppression), contamination (twisting proverbs by combining several phraseological units) and original utterance (concrete proverb or proverb pattern).

We have examined 146 variants of On ne peut pas avoir le beurre et l’argent du beurre hoping to find the dividing line between proverbs and anti-proverbs. To some utterances, we could stick the “proverb” or “anti-proverb” label (respectively 26 and 10 texts), but for the most part of the corpus (110 texts), we cannot tell if it is one or the other. It was not possible to discern the distinctive feature(s) of anti-proverbiality for the following reasons:
- the two categories show common features: scarcity of proper nouns, variability, similar number of additional phrases, similar distribution of stylistic labels
- probable shift of status of an utterance: an anti-proverb can become a proverb over the time; we suppose it did happen in the case of the form with “et le sourire de la crémière”
- lack of objective data clearly identifiable as proverbs and/or anti-proverbs.
Some tendencies can nevertheless be formulated: anti-proverbs
- are based on the expectation of the original form, this expectation being sometimes marked by the use of dots (presumably silence in oral transmission)
- show a lower number of occurencies
- use a more dispersed lexicon with many hapaxes
- the ideas suggested by anti-proverbs cover a much wider range than those of the proverbs.

To fill a gap in paremiology, this study, based on a 100-item corpus, deals with French anti-proverbs about food and drink (both being important subjects in France). The paper begins with a discussion of the difficulties involved in distinguishing proverb variants from anti-proverbs and then proceeds to describe those characteristics shared by the proverbs and anti-proverbs on these subjects: there are twice as many expressions about food as about drink and five times as many about alcohol as about soft drinks; furthermore, proverbs and anti-proverbs possess a similar distribution of usage labels and similar pairs of antonymic utterances. But there are notable ways in which the proverbs differ from the anti-proverbs: while proverbs tend to discourage excess, anti-proverbs celebrate excess; and while proverbs focus on wine, anti-proverbs celebrate beer. Anti-proverbs about food and drink are a characteristic part of the French anti-proverbial stock, sharing several peculiarities with the genre as a whole (e.g., including the proportion of compound proverbs in both corpuses, as well as the proportion of items that are most frequently used).

The revision of the proverb lore in the French-Hungarian and Hungarian-French Dictionary to be published in Hungary in the near future forced me to give quite quick and short answers to questions that should deserve due consideration, i.e.:
-How to determine the quantity and quality of proverbs that should be included in a (non-phraseological) bilingual dictionary?
-How to deal with proverbs no equivalent of which is known in the other language?
-To what extent are details needed/permitted about the different uses of individual proverbs?
-Under what and how many key words should a proverb appear?-Should we suppress the distinction between the labels proverb and proverbial expression because of the relationship between them?
-When the entry is divided into several parts for semantic or grammatical reasons, should we place the proverbs separately at the end of each part or together at the end of the entry?
I have no universal answer to these questions, but I may contribute to the common reflection by giving some ideas.

This study deals with a field that has not yet been much explored: mixed (contaminated) French proverbs, i. e., anti-proverbs containing more than one phraseological unit (of which at least one must be a proverb or a proverb pattern). Using a corpus of 70 French compound proverbs, the analysis has been done on the basis of
- the number of original phraseological units in the compound (up to 7)
- the nature of the phraseological units contained in the compound proverb (proverb, proverbial expression, proverb pattern)
- the linkage between the units (are they isolated from, or embedded in, each other?)
- the familiarity of the original units used for the mixing
- topics (sexuality, women, drinking)
- stylistic labels (colloquial, vulgar)
- the integrity of the units to be found in the compound proverb (Is the first/second part of the first/second unit present in the compound? If it is, does it appear in an unmodified or a modified form?)
- the distribution of original units and parts of units to make up a compound
- compound patterns
- common points in original units
- twins (compounds made up of the same original units)

A viccet más kisepikai műfajokhoz képest kevéssé tanulmányozták. A vicc komolytalanságáról beszélni maga is komolytalan.

Ten studies are in English, three in Russian, one is in French, and one in German. This
issue grew from seven panels and plenary lectures on humour research presented in Hungary in 2007 at the International Symposium “Humour and Linguistics/Folklore” organized by Anna T. Litovkina and Péter Barta at the Illyés Gyula College of Education
(Szekszárd, 14–16 September 2007). The program committee accepted proposals for papers on focused topics that examined humour in relation to linguistics or folklore. Of
special interest, however, were contributions on the following: (1) Proverbs, Sayings and Idioms; (2) Tales; (3) Riddles; (4) Anti-Proverbs; (5) Graffi ti; (6) Jokes; (7) Rumour and Gossip; (8) Punning; (9) Sexuality, Taboo and Insults; (10) Drinking and Food; (11) Festivals, Fairs and Harvest Traditions; (12) Cognitive Linguistics; (13) Language Teaching. The working languages of the Symposium were English, German, French and Russian. The symposium featured 46 speakers from 13 countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the USA). Besides a two-hour round-table discussion and four plenary lectures, there were a number of sections on themes such as: JOKES; PROVERBS, SAYINGS AND IDIOMS; INTERFACES; COGNITIVE LINGUISTICS; HUMOUR AND CULTURE.

Ugyanígy járhat a tolmács a hangidentitásával. Sőt, a helyzet bonyolultabb: több hangidentitást is cserélgethet öntudatlanul.

A jelen kötet születése nemzetközi együttműködésnek tudható be.
A szerzőpáros művét a következő jelzőkkel minősíthetni: alapos, tudományos, széles látókörű, átfogó.

A compound does not necessarily need proverbs: out of 70 compounds, 3 contain but a proverb pattern and a proverbial expression.
The proverb pattern is as immanent an element of the proverb as its vocabulary or stylistic features.
The majority of compounds contain two original units.
A limited number of compound patterns can be drawn up.
The study of compounds – and of anti-proverbs in general – enhances the study of proverbs: the use of original proverbs for mixing or twisting sheds light on the present popularity of individual proverbs and different variants.

A „Tom Swifty” több szempontú elemzése után megállapíthatjuk, hogy a wellerizmusnak nemcsak folytatása, hanem továbbfejlesztése:
– egyetlen határozószóval összegzi a wellerizmus hagyományosan hosszabb helyzetábrázolását;
– míg a wellerizmus a közlés és a helyzet kapcsolatát/ellentétét csak implicite tartalmazza, addig a „Tom Swifty” a határozószó hangalakjával is utal a vele kapcsolatos/ellentétes közlésre;
