IntRoductIon A critical appraisal (CA)[1] is a specific form of literature in medicine, which analyzes the existing literature regarding its validity under the aspects of study layout, methods, statistics, and results. This CA has been written and published because the article entitled “Implant Survival between Endo‐osseous Dental Implants in Immediate Loading, Delayed Loading, and Basal Immediate Loading Dental Implants: A 3‐year follow‐up” does–in no aspect–meet the minimal demands for a scientific study nor a publication as presented below.

Radiotherapy remains one of the major treatment modalities for cancer even though it is known to produce serious immediate, early-delayed and late delayed side effects. A study of biochemical processes taking place in the system following radiation therapy will be very important in understanding these effects. Spectroscopic methods provide very sensitive techniques for identification and determination of individual components in complex biological samples. Its applications in clinical diagnostics, both in-vitro and in-vivo, are being explored very vigorously at present. Effects of radiation exposure on living systems have been studied by several groups in the past. However, all such studies have been based on morphological and histopathological analyses which cannot usually give information on immediate or early delayed damages and many of the biochemical changes causing such damages. Practically no spectroscopic studies have been carried out in this area so far, in spite of the fac...

Context: In developing countries like India, where money set aside for public health, is <1% of the gross domestic product, routine use of surgical gloves for examining patients as well as for minor surgical procedures can be a drain on the resources. Hence, we decided to conduct a study to ascertain whether it is necessary to use surgical gloves in routine dental extractions. Aims: This study aims to conduct a study to ascertain whether it is necessary to use surgical gloves in routine dental extractions. Materials and Methods: A comparative, prospective, randomized, double-blind study was carried out in one hundred patients for nonsurgical extractions of multiple teeth, performed aseptically. Microbiology specimens were taken from the glove's surfaces according to a standard protocol. An independent assessor, who was blinded for the procedure, examined the patients on the 7th postoperative day. Data were entered into Microsoft Excel sheet and subjected to Statistical analys...

Though the incidence and mortality of deep neck infections has markedly decreased with advent of antibiotics and improved dental care, these infections are not unusual and present a challenging problem because of the complex anatomy and potentially fatal complications that may occur. This case report illustrates the development of lateral pharyngeal space abscess following extraction of a lower third molar and the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment. It was concluded that the management of a lateral pharyngeal space infection of odontogenic origin must be prompt and accurate, with surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Introduction: Dental education, like most fields of healthcare education, embraces all three domains of learning − cognitive, psychomotor and affective. The aim of this study was to determine whether computer-assisted learning (CAL) can replace face-to-face teaching with reference to acquiring theoretical as well as practical skills in periodontal charting in dentistry. Material and Methods: A total of 70 year 4 dental students were randomly assigned to CAL and Small Group Tutorial (SGT) groups. Following the sessions, they underwent theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills evaluation tests. Pre- and post-tests Confidence Log Questionnaires (CLQ) were completed by the students. Results: CAL and SGT were equally effective from the theoretical knowledge aspect. SGT group did better in some aspects of practical skills acquisition. Conclusion: There was no statistical difference in the theoretical knowledge acquired by the different methods, whereas small group teaching was more effective in gaining certain psychomotor skills in periodontal charting, leading us to conclude that face-to-face teaching seems to be having an upper hand when it comes to teaching periodontal charting.

The aim and the objectives were. (1) to assess the efficacy of a desensitizing toothpaste containing 8.0% arginine-calcium carbonate (Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™), (2) to assess the efficacy of a desensitizing toothpaste containing 8.0% arginine-calcium carbonate (Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™) used in combination with iontophoresis, and (3) to compare the effectiveness of the above methods. Two groups of 40 patients each having dentinal hypersensitivity were treated using 8% proarginine and iontophoresis. The patients were recalled after 1, 2, and 4 weeks. The scores were tabulated and the results were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Visual analog scale between the two groups showed a significant difference from the 1 week till the 4 week. ANOVA values showed the reduction in the dentinal hypersensitivity in Group 2 using the iontophoresis along with the 8.0% arginine-calcium carbonate toothpaste. The Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel correlation test of the Schiff's dentin...

MateRIals and Methods 1. (a) The study setup is true. (b) The cases included are those of patients who opted for implants 2. Legends, if inadequate, may kindly be cross‐referenced from the article itself 3. Any medical or dental treatment outcome, whether by implants or otherwise, can be by chance also, at times. It is virtually impossible to predict how the body behaves to a particular treatment (medical or surgical) in individuals accurately, all the time 4. The article does not claim to have done any statistical analysis – when only four cases are presented, there is no scope for statistics, obviously 5. If there is any discrepancy between the clinical pictures and written text, kindly let us know 6. This question is irrelevant, as there is no “control group” in this study 7. Whether the “assessments drawn from the clinical cases are proper”[1] or not, is quite subjective 8. The study has its own drawbacks, some of which we have mentioned in the article itself under the subheading “Limitation of Study.”[2] We certainly do not claim to be all knowing 9. It is for the reader to decide whether the article “provides valuable information for decision making”[1] or not. Obviously, it cannot be one person’s views alone that counts.

With introduction of the term "ossteointegration of dental implant" by Branemark, advancement in implantology from 1957 to 2017 has come a long way with modification in implant type and in loading time. This study aims to evaluate the survival of endo-osseous immediate loading (IL) implant and basal IL implants in atrophic jaws with objective to compare implant survival in atrophic jaws for full mouth rehabilitation between endo-osseous IL versus endo-osseous delayed loading (DL) versus basal IL during 3-year follow-up. Fifty-two (34 endo-osseous and 18 basal) implants were placed in 4 patients requiring full mouth rehabilitation in atrophic jaws. Case 1: Endo-osseous DL implants in upper and lower arch, Case 2: Endo-osseous IL implants in upper and lower arch, Case 3: Basal IL implant in upper and lower arch, and Case 4: Endo-osseous DL in upper arch and basal IL implant in the lower arch. Intraoperative evaluation was done on the basis of pain (visual analog scale [VAS])...

The corner stone for successful treatment outcomes of any condition depends on accurate diagnosis. Tumours of the maxillofacial region in adolescence can pose a challenge to the radiologist, surgeon, as well as the pathologist. This case report illustrates the dilemma that can be faced by any of the above three groups when tumours do not conform to ‘typical’ patterns.

Lateral facial cleft is one of the rare entities. The lateral mouth deformity is generally an indicator of Tessier's cleft 7. The repair of the lateral or transverse facial cleft is a surgical challenge on the account of the abnormal positioning and appearance of the cleft. In this report, a case of bilateral Tessier's cleft 7, surgical construction of muscle at the modiolus and appositional cutaneous z-plasty has been done on both side.

Introduction The diabetic host is considered to be at an increased risk for the development of odontogenic infections due to his medically compromised state. This perceived risk of higher infections often results in dentists delaying much-needed surgical treatment in this patient population. Discussion A critical examination of literature does not seem to support the role of diabetes mellitus as a definitive risk factor for odontogenic infections. A simplistic extrapolation of infection rates observed in other sites may not be justified in the orofacial region.

Laser Raman spectroscopy has been used in this study to characterize mandibular bone samples from patients who had undergone radiation therapy for oral cancer. The paper discusses spectral changes resulting in osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandibular bone, a serious complication that may occur after radiation therapy. Histopathological studies normally reveal the radiation damage on vascular canals and loss in bone cells, but will not reveal any structural or biochemical changes. All radiation-induced side effects are attributed to this hypovascularity and hypocellularity caused by early- and/or late-delayed effects. Our Raman studies on normal and ORN bone and on bone exposed to radiation, but not in the ORN state, show that irradiation produces immediate structural changes in the inorganic bone matrix with a slight loss in cells. ORN bone, in addition to the structural changes that had already occurred on radiation exposure, shows almost complete loss of cellular components. Since bone tissue is continuously being remodeled (dissolved and rebuilt) under normal conditions, our results suggest that the immediate structural changes in the calcium hydroxy apatite mineral part is not repaired in ORN, due to loss of the highly transient osteoblasts and osteoclasts resulting from destruction of stem cells. The spectral studies also show changes in the organic matrix, which is mostly type I collagen.
