Excel spreadsheet Settling Velocity.xls (2.1) calculates the terminal settling velocity of single spherical particles and of single natural sediment particles, in liquids and gases. It also predicts the hindered settling velocity of concentrated suspensions, by using Richardson & Zaki’s Law.
Guo (2002), Song Zhiyao et al. (2008), and Cheng (2009) combined the 3 “classical” settling velocity equations on laminar flow (Stokes’ Law), intermediate flow, and turbulent flow (Newton’s Law) each to only one relatively simple “new” settling velocity equation, used in this spreadsheet.
Calculations by these new settling laws are compared and contrasted with the sometimes tedious
classical calculations, and validated by graphical and manual sedimentation calculations.
13 worked examples illustrate how to use this spreadsheet, and how do manual calculations.

Estimation of flow resistance coefficients plays an inevitable role in open‐channel flows in hydraulic modeling and water resources engineering. Despite many equations and methods recommended for estimating roughness coefficients, only two standard resistance equations (original Manning's and Keulegan's equations) have been widely taught and utilized in practice. There can be various reasons for not using new bed roughness predictors (BRPs), one of which is the absence of teaching BRPs. A rigorous analysis of available BRPs for estimating grain and form roughness coefficients delineates that most of them are comprised of a scheme rather than a single equation. Also, each BRP is tailored to solve a distinct type of problem; however, a proper definition of a problem statement helps shedding light on this application. This study presents an Excel VBA‐based educational estimator to address the gap. For this purpose, the problem statement is first revisited to accomplish a better understanding in light of proper problem classification. On the basis of different groups of input and output data, each BRP is implemented into an Excel spreadsheet and VBA codes are presented for BRPs incorporating both grain and form roughness. This computer application can help students in open‐channel engineering courses not only to become familiar with modified BRPs but also to acknowledge the merit of the Excel spreadsheet for estimating flow resistance coefficients. Finally, as the VBA codes are presented in detail, they can be modified by users in accordance with their priorities for both educational and practical purposes.

Cement stabilized rammed earth (CRSE) is a sustainable, low energy consuming construction technique which utilizes inorganic soil, usually taken directly from the construction site, with a small addition of Portland cement as a building material. This technology is gaining popularity in various regions of the world, however, there are no uniform standards for designing the composition of the CSRE mixture. The main goal of this article is to propose a complete algorithm for designing CSRE with the use of subsoil obtained from the construction site. The article’s authors propose the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to determine the proper proportions of soil, cement, and water in a CSRE mixture that provides sufficient compressive strength. Reduction of water activity aw can extend the shelf life and improve the quality of foods. After the optimal water activity has been selected, based on Karel’s aw-spoilage graphs, a simple decision scheme in this document helps to choose the best equation (“Law”) to calculate or adjust the water activity: for an aqueous one component  solution: Raoult’s and Norrish’ laws; spreadsheet “aw-Raoult-Norrish.xls”; or in case of an aqueous multi-component solution: Norrish’ and Ross’ laws; spreadsheet “Norrish-Ross.xls: aw calculations of a multi-component solution”. Both Excel spreadsheets, present in this document, simplify the tedious exponential aw calculations.
The water activity of a mixture of 2 to 5 solids can be predicted either by constructing the solids mixture sorption isotherm, or by using the Salwin equation. When applying the 3rd spreadsheet in this document, “Calculation Water Activity aw Solids Mixture.xls”, the  2 to 5 separate solids isotherms are converted into one new solids mixture sorption isotherm. Because the total water content of the solids mixture is known, the water activity of the solids mixture can be found from that new mixture isotherm. The calculations by the “aw Solid Mixture” spreadsheet are compared with aw findings from Salwin’s equation. Both aw values are in good agreement.
Several worked examples, for each of the 3 spreadsheets present, illustrate step-by-step the aw calculation of solutions and of solid mixtures.
Annex 1 lists the lowest water activity for growth and/or toxin production of many micro-
organisms in foods. Annex 2 shows the minimal aw for activity of the main food spoiling enzymes.

This book shows how Microsoft Excel can be used as an effective educational platform for thermofluid analyses. Excel provides a rich library of built-in functions and powerful tools for data visualisation and analysis. The Solver add-in that comes with it enables the students to perform multi-variable optimisation analyses of thermofluid systems. Building on these capabilities, the Excel-based platform for thermofluid analyses presented in this book also utilises the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language that comes with Microsoft Office. The book shows how VBA can be used for developing additional user-defined functions (UDFs) for supplementing Excel’s built-in functions and introduces an Excel add-in, called Thermax, that provides UDFs for determining the thermodynamic fluid properties. The fluids covered by Thermax include twelve ideal gases, saturated water and superheated steam mixtures, six refrigerants, humid air for psychrometric analyses, and air at standard atmospheric pressure. Property add-ins developed by other academic and research institutions or individuals can be used to extend the range of thermofluid analyses that can be performed with the Excel-based platform.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulation includes a wide range of stochastic techniques used to quantitatively evaluate the behavior of complex systems or processes. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) software is, arguably, the most commonly employed general purpose tool for MC simulation. Despite the popularity of the Excel in many industries and educational institutions, it has been repeatedly criticized for its flaws and often described as questionable, if not completely unsuitable, for statistical problems. The purpose of this study is to assess suitability of the Excel (specifically its 2010 and 2013 versions) with VBA programming as a tool for MC simulation. The results of the study indicate that Microsoft Excel (versions 2010 and 2013) is a strong Monte Carlo simulation application offering a solid framework of core simulation components including spreadsheets for data input and output, VBA development environment and summary statistics functions. This framework should be complemented with an external high-quality pseudo-random number generator added as a VBA module. A large and diverse category of Excel’s incidental simulation components that includes statistical distributions, linear and non-linear regression and other statistical, engineering and business functions require execution of due diligence to determine their suitability for a specific MC project.
