Why Is the Realty Group One of the Best in its’ Marketplace?

We just wanted to give a huge thanks to Theresa and her team for all their help, advice, and guidance over the last 18 months. We had to sell our condo quickly last year and with a monumental effort from the ladies we managed to go from an initial phone call to Theresa, through staging and viewings, to a signed sale at a very good price, in only two and a half weeks. They then helped us find the ideal rental property and guided us through the mountain of paperwork that entailed. This year they were so patient helping us to purchase our ideal condo. We saw many condos with Lindsay, before the perfect one came up, which they were able to purchase for us at a reduced price. Both ladies were dedicated to the task and willing to go the extra mile to help us in our endeavors and we greatly appreciated them being with us and supporting us through this journey, we couldn’t have done it without them. Also, special shout out to Lindsay, her eye for staging is outstanding. In addition, we must add; in the same 18 months’ timeframe, Theresa and Lindsay also helped both sets of our parents stage and sell their condos. This was done with compassion, patience and care, given the advanced years of our parents. Big, big thank you from us.

We had the pleasure of working with Theresa and Samantha for the sale of my mother's home. The entire transaction from our initial meeting to the closing was very smooth and personable. They had great ideas for virtual staging and suggestions for improvements that would have the most impact. Theresa was always available to speak to and provided a wonderful advertising campaign, maximizing the number of potential buyers. We were able to sell the home quickly, above the asking price, with multiple offers. All in all, it was an easy and pleasurable process, mostly as a result of their vast experience and professionalism, we highly recommend working with Theresa and Samantha. Thanks again!

Thanks again Lindsay and Theresa for helping us sell our house. With all the mixed emotions of selling and moving across the country, Lindsay and Theresa made the sale as easy as it could be. Their advice to prepare the house for sale was practical and simple. They were both extremely organized and very responsive to all our questions and always supported their answers with data and analytics. Lindsay made the showings simple and hands off on our part. Finalizing the offer and closing the sale was well prepared and laid out clearly for us. Overall, we couldn’t ask for more friendly, experienced and caring help to make this sale possible. We will miss you both as we venture out west but hope to stay connected on social media. Thanks again Lindsay and Theresa.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF A

BEACH DAY

What could be better than a sunny day at the beach? Beach trips are accessible and offer countless hours of fun and relaxation. Clear your calendar and make the most out of your day trip with these four tips.

PACK LIKE A PRO

Hydration is important if you’re spending all day outdoors, and you may also work up more of an appetite than you think. Pack your cooler with ice at the bottom, then your lunch, then water bottles and snacks on top for easy access. A hard cooler with wheels and handles is often easiest to pack, pull across a parking lot and carry on the sand.

BEAT THE HEAT

The sun can be both our friend and our foe. To avoid pain and regret tomorrow, an all-important beach day step is to protect yourself from the sun. Bring an SPF 30 or higher sunblock and reapply frequently. Wait at least 15 minutes after applying before going in the water. However, the best protection from the sun is limiting your exposure. Camping supply manufacturers like Coleman have popup shelters that are great options to protect you from the sun, so you can spend even longer at the beach.

SWIMMING SAFELY

Even if you feel the beach is safe, it’s always a good idea to be aware of potential dangers and watch young swimmers closely. Make sure kids have a strong foundation when it comes to swimming and teach them to float on their backs when they get tired. Lastly, know what to do if you get caught in a riptide: Remain calm and try to swim parallel to shore.

ENJOY THE DAY AT YOUR OWN PACE

Some members of your party will be active all day, while others will be perfectly happy lounging with a book, taking in the fresh air. Remember to pack fun things like footballs and frisbees, but don’t forget a few good chairs. Compact ones can allow you to relax inside or outside your shelter.

THE HOTTEST PLACE IN CANADA

Canada doesn’t necessarily get warmer the further south you go - the hottest city (by average summertime high temperatures) actually lies above the 50th parallel. Kamloops, British Columbia, sits in the Thompson Valley about four hours’ drive northeast of Vancouver, and its desert-like landscape sees more days over 30 degrees Celsius than any other Canadian city. July daytime temperatures average a high of 29 degrees, with humidity dropping to a fairly parched 20 percent, and 303 mean monthly sunshine hours (about the same as Honolulu, Hawaii).

Known for its mountain biking trails and hoodoos—otherworldly rock formations caused by millions of years of erosion—Kamloops has its western neighbours, the Rocky Mountains, to thank for its hot, semi-arid climate. The city’s rain shadow location means that it gets significantly less precipitation than the soggy Pacific coast. In a phenomenon called orographic lift, prevailing winds from the sea get pushed upwards by mountain ranges, where moisture condenses into rain clouds (the same effect responsible for Canada’s wettest place, Hucuktlis Lake). By the time winds pass the peak, most if not all of the humidity is lost, and temperatures on the downslope can be up to 14 degrees warmer. That’s

why Kamloops - with its sagebrush, rattlesnakes and occasional tumbleweeds - looks and feels similar to parts of Nevada, Utah and Idaho.

The B.C. interior’s unique climate conditions can also make summer heat waves deadly - for instance in 2021, when a “heat dome” caused by high atmospheric pressure created sweltering conditions across the western half of North America. Canada’s highest-ever temperature - an unbelievable 49.6 degrees Celsius - was in June 2021 in Lytton, B.C., a tiny hamlet two hours west of Kamloops. Soon after, a devastating wildfire swept through the town, and most of the 250 residents had just minutes to grab

10 Power to Move You

what they could and evacuate. Kamloops itself registered a no-less-scorching record high of 47.3 degrees during the heat wave, which killed 600 people across B.C. Global warming means that record may be beaten again sooner than we’d like - by 2051, the number of hot days over 30 degrees could more than double in Kamloops, from an average of 27 days a year to 67, according to the Canadian Centre for Kamloops may make you melt in summer, but that doesn’t mean its winters are warm. In fact, its average lowest annual temperature is -27 degrees, while the record coldest was set in 1950 at a frigid -38.3 degrees Celsius. For a more temperate getaway, you’ll want to head to Victoria, B.C., Canada’s mildest climate - a sub-Mediterranean zone at the southern tip of Vancouver Island where the mercury rarely falls below zero. In fact, lemon and olive trees grow outdoors just north of the city.

Victoria lies further north than snowier cities like Ottawa, Quebec City, and Minneapolis, but its average winter lows are kept in the single digits by warm ocean currents from the Pacific combined with near-constant offshore winds, which provide a buffer against temperature extremes. Snow and ice are so rare that even in January, you’ll spot residents fishing, sailing and golfing - far more fun than shovelling your driveway.

The only downside to Victoria’s winter is the rain - nearly two-thirds of the city’s 23 inches of annual precipitation falls from November to March. That’s nothing compared to the rest of Vancouver Island, however, which typically sees three times that amount (or more). Summers in Victoria are cool and relatively dry, thanks to the coastal mountains to the west, and daily high temperatures average in the low 20s in July and August. At night, it’s chilly enough for a jacket, with lows around 12 degrees.

BUILDING AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN

If you love squeezing every last drop out of summer, spending time outdoors is a must. Enjoy your everyday activities on the patio with an outdoor kitchen. Here, we share some considerations to keep you cooking all season long.

Budget, as always, will help dictate your process and selections. Be mindful of investment and resale value if applicable to your situation. Thankfully, an outdoor kitchen is attractive to buyers and can offer great return on investment (especially post pandemic shutdowns). Once your budget is set, consider function. What is doable in your space? Where are your hookups? If you need help with a design, look for a local expert or use online

resources such as Yardzen or Tilly. When making a plan, address plumbing, electricity, venting, and durability. Safety is paramount, even in a casual space. Never place a grill in an enclosed area or within ten feet of your home (per Weber grills and a host of safety organizations).

You can easily spend tens of thousands of dollars having an outdoor kitchen professionally built. If that’s beyond your budget, consider some DIY solutions. Check out salvage shops for cabinets, tile, and more. Find durability and aesthetics with stainless-steel, natural stone, concrete, and tile. Thoughtful material choices will help create a

space you’ll enjoy that can stand up to the elements too. If you live in a region with dramatic winter weather, weatherproof your kitchen just as you would any other exposed space. Cover a grill, empty a refrigerator, and drain any water lines before freezing temps hit.

Find a happy medium between custom and DIY with buildable outdoor kitchen sets. (We love the look of the Esola outdoor kitchen set in weathered teak from Frontgate.) Online sources help you select stand-alone pieces. Finally, do a little dreaming with bonus features such as a pergola, overhead fan, outdoor TV, and Bluetooth music system.

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR GARDEN IN HARMONY

The first sprigs of green bring the promise of summer blooms and seasonal harvests to gardens across North America. But with new growth comes additional visitors - of the welcome and unwelcome varieties. Here are some tips for living peacefully with the critters who make your garden their home, too.

MEET YOUR GUESTS

Just like region and climate zone affect the kinds of plants you grow in your garden, they also determine which pollinators and pests you may encounter. Population density, of course, also plays a role.

Not every home gardener will encounter the same species, but you’ll find evidence of the following wildlife in most home gardens throughout North America. Aphids, beetles, slugs, and earthworms are all common crawlers in residential yards and gardens. Birds like robins, starlings, and blue jays are frequent fliers, while critters like racoons, squirrels, and gophers can be found in urban and rural areas alike. All of these species serve a purpose in your local ecosystem and add varying levels of value to your own garden.

Utilize resources like your nearest extension office (it may be tied to a university or cooperative) for helpful information on local flora and fauna. Your favorite nursery may also have suggestions for both attracting and deterring certain visitors. Better understanding the connection between local plant life and wildlife will help cultivate that green thumb and keep your garden thriving.

PLANT WITH PURPOSE

One of the best ways to keep insects and mites from decimating your garden is by planting strategically. Sometimes referred to as companion planting, it’s the same logic behind the rosebushes you see among the grapes at vineyards applies in your own backyard. When planted at the end of a row, rosebushes attract

20 Power to Move You

pests like aphids and alert vintners to their presence. In a similar way, you can use plants like sunflowers, bee balm, and dill to keep pesky insects away from your produce, petals, and house!

Popular blooms like marigolds, petunias, and chrysanthemums are some of the hardest workers in your garden. Not only do they attract helpful pollinators, but they deter pests like aphids, cabbage worms, and slugs. Herbs like thyme, rosemary, and lavender are additional garden stalwarts. Plant them around raised beds or your compost pile to keep unwanted insects and critters like rats and gophers away. Mint has similar pest-control properties - just make sure to use a pot or container to keep it from spreading.

CULTIVATE A REFUGE

It’s no secret that pollinators are both vital to your garden and dwindling in alarming numbers. Keep them happy with a mix of ground cover and fragrant blooms. Sweet alyssum, salvia, dahlias, and fuchsias are popular choices for their pretty appearance and abundance of pollen and nectar.

You can further entice pollinators to your yard by focusing on biodiversity. Cultivating plant life that’s native to your ecoregion will dramatically increase the number of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other

delightful visitors. One of the best ways to restore your home’s native landscape is by swapping your maintained yard for native grasses and shrubs.

STORE WITH SMARTS

Another trick for living harmoniously with local wildlife? Be mindful of the man-made additions to your garden or outdoor living space. Store pets’ food and water inside to discourage larger scavengers. And if you or a neighbor keeps chickens, be prepared for rats; deter rodents by keeping the coop secure and clean and by promptly removing extra feed and eggs. Compost piles are another backyard staple notorious for attracting wildlife, from bears and opossums to rats and mice. To reap compost benefits without nighttime visitors, avoid tossing meat, fat, or dairy scraps into the bin, and use a style with a solid bottom and secure lid. Keep in mind that this style will make it harder for those helpful earthworms to enter and aid decomposition, so you may have to introduce them to the compost yourself.

Of course, no matter the measures you take, local animals and insects will always make an appearance in your garden. With a little planning and maintenance, you can maximize the benefits and mitigate the damage of your wildlife neighbors.

LOLEA NO1 SANGRIA

Lolea No1 Sangria, hailing from Spain, has undoubtedly become my go-to summer drink for entertaining friends. Both the red and white variants have impressed my taste buds with their delightful flavors. Let’s start with the white Sangria, a splendid blend of Chardonnay and Macabeo grapes, infused with natural Mediterranean citrus, a touch of vanilla, and fizzy water. The captivating scents of orange and lemon intermingle with the luscious apricot fruit and fresh jasmine notes, creating a truly invigorating experience. With its gentle effervescence, this refreshing Sangria becomes an abso-

lute necessity on scorching hot days, best enjoyed on a sun-kissed patio. As for the red Sangria, its pale ruby hue invites anticipation. The pronounced aromas of orange, berry compote, nutmeg, watermelon, and pineapple entice the senses. Upon sipping, the lightly fizzy texture, balanced sweetness, and underlying acidity intertwine harmoniously, culminating in a fruit-forward profile and a satisfying, medium-length finish. Lolea No1 Sangria, available at the LCBO, has become the epitome of an exceptional summer beverage, perfectly suited for moments of relaxation and celebration.

A CALIFORNIA REMODEL INSPIRED BY BEACH VIBES

When this project started, the residence was a mid-century beach home that was minimally updated by previous owners - but the home’s new owner had grander plans. “He wanted this California-cool, surf-shack feel, but more elevated,” says Mindy Gayer, who operates her eponymous design firm in Orange County.

Gayer draws design inspiration from the region where she works and lives. “Southern California living embodies incredible weather and that warmer feeling,” says Gayer. “We try to infuse that in our homes with a light palette and other design choices that reflect the sunshiny disposition of California in general.” That sensibility matched what this project called for. “This client is very creative. When he came to us, he had a defined vision of what he loved. This wasn’t his first remodel project, so he knows what the process is like. He was willing to invest in the things that would deliver character and interest,” she says.

Many of Gayer’s clients, including this one, enjoy what she calls an indoor-outdoor lifestyle that embraces open-air activities like hiking and surfing, and carries

that same aesthetic inside. This home embodies the interplay between the indoors and outdoors. “We’re surrounded by so much natural beauty with a lot of our homes near the ocean, and with a lot of green landscaping. We try to incorporate those beautiful tones inspired by nature,” says Gayer.

This client’s particular passions and hobbies also inspired the design. “Our client is a big ocean lover. He loves surfing and boating,” says Gayer. Various shades of blue appear throughout as a nod to the ocean waves and the clear sky above.

The remodel plan kept in place several of the home’s original architectural features, including the wall of windows at the back of the house. “The challenge with

28 Power to Move You

so much natural light is to ensure the space doesn’t feel too exposed. We leaned into the fact that it’s a bright open space,” says Gayer. She intentionally chose materials that didn’t disrupt the eye from enjoying the outdoor views. Crisp-white paint and millwork embrace and amplify the light through clerestory windows. Lighter wood tones in the flooring and furniture are reminiscent of sand; a reminder that the beach is just a block away.

Because so much of the outdoor space can be seen from the common living area, it feels like a natural extension of the home. “It was important to allow that outdoor space to be a room in and of itself and not feel like the interior was competing with it,” says Gayer. Interior design elements continue outdoors, including touches of the coastal-blue color palette, crisp-white paint, and light-wood furniture. Corrugated metal and galvanized light fixtures add to the maritime atmosphere, and ample seating entices family and friends to stay awhile.

As the project progressed, the owner saw his creative vision for the inside of the home coming to life and wondered if the exterior would live up to the interior. “Updating exteriors can get costly, so they’re not always a top priority for clients,” says Gayer. Midway through the project, the client decided updating the exterior would be crucial to realizing its full potential. So, they lightened up the shingles by painting them a custom oatmeal hue. New house numbers and exterior lighting were also added, as well as new decking from the curbside to the front door. A landscape plan from Bridget Skinner, a local landscape architect, featured a new palette for all the plants and included grasses and succulents.

“I am so glad our client wanted to update the exterior,” says Gayer. “We always want the exterior to speak to the interior. It should give a peek into what the inside is going to feel like. It added to the charm of the home.” And charm it has. Indoors and out, this beach home truly embodies California cool.

In the winter, try things like snowshoeing or ice fishing, and when you’re in need of some sustenance after your adventures there are plenty of options in the surrounding

The Hammer has come a long way over the last decade. While Hamilton has always been home to more than 100 waterfalls, great hiking (thank you, Niagara Escarpment) and the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area (with caves!), its dining, bar and retail scenes have kicked things up a notch or three of late. While James Street North and Locke Street get most of the attention, Ottawa Street has lots to offer day trippers, too. Grab a coffee or brunch at The Cannon, or a delicious fish-and-chips lunch at Hammerhead’s on Ottawa. Then, check out vintage and textile stores like Antique Avenue and Filter. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, head over to James Street to grab next-level donuts at Grandad’s. (Bonus: You can visit all of your friends who have already fled Toronto for Hamilton!)

ABERFOYLE

Drive time from Toronto: 1hr.

This cute little town between Guelph and the 401 is famous for its antique market, which runs from June until the end of October. More than a hundred dealers bring their wares every Sunday to this family-friendly outdoor market (there’s also the “Saturday Special” shows a couple times a year where dealers who don’t usually show in Aberfoyle make guest appearances). After filling up on vintage Canadiana, take your new retro spoons over to the Aberfoyle Mill for lunch.

THE BLUE MOUNTAINS

Drive time from Toronto: 2hrs 30min.

Okay, this pushes the two-hour-drive limit a bit, but we just couldn’t leave out this famous skiing and mountain biking destination on the shores of Georgian Bay. There’s plenty to do at Blue Mountain Resort even if you’re not

a snow bunny or cycling daredevil, including mini golf, treetop trekking and hiking. In the fall or spring check out Agora, a beautiful walk-through light installation, or dine at Summitview Pavilion, the resort’s mountaintop patio. Feeling lazy? Scandinave Spa (a five-minute drive from the ski village) offers a full range of treatments and its heated outdoor baths are open year-round. There’s a lovely sandy strip at Northwinds Beach where you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas and kayaks—even teeny tiny ones for kids—in season. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Bent Taco in Collingwood for some legendary tacos and next-level cocktails.

NIAGARA ON THE LAKE

Drive time from Toronto: 1hr 40min.

One of the most popular day trips from Toronto, the famously quaint Niagara-on-the-Lake is still going strong. The surrounding area is ground zero for ice wine, so if you’re a sucker for the sweet stuff, head to Inniskillin Winery for tastings and tours. Hockey fans and whisky

lovers should check out Gretzky Estates Winery & Distillery and take a spin on The Great One’s seasonal backyard skating rink. Foodies will want to book a table for dinner at Kitchen 76 at Two Sisters Vineyards and every true craft beer fan needs to make a pilgrimage to Silversmith Brewing Company, Ontario’s O.G. destination craft brewery.

GRAVENHURST

Drive time from Toronto: 2hrs.

If you want a taste of cottage country without the need for an overnight stay, this small town nestled on the southern shore of Lake Muskoka is a good bet. Stargazers flock to the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve (which was designated as the world’s fist permanent Dark Sky Reserve in 1999) to experience views of the night sky unsullied by city or cottage lights. (Check out more great stargazing spots across Canada.) In the winter Gravenhurst hosts a popular carnival, and in warmer weather it’s nearly mandatory to take a cruise (book in

advance!) on the vintage Muskoka Steamships followed by a walk through the Tree Museum, an outdoor art gallery of site-specific installations. A craft beer at Sawdust City Brewing, however, has year-round appeal.

GUELPH

Drive time from Toronto: 1hr 10min.

Nature lovers can get their fix of All The Outdoor Things (Gardens! Wetlands! Meadows! Woodlands! Trails!) at the 400 acres that is the University of Guelph Arboretum. Take a break from all that foliage with a pint of craft beer at Fixed Gear Brewing Company or a truly filthy gin martini at Spring Mill Distillery. If you’re staying for dinner, hit La Reina, but if you simply need a sugar fix to power your drive back to Toronto, pop into Sweet Temptations Co. for gourmet cupcakes or Lady Glaze for fancy donuts.

MILTON

Drive time from Toronto: 50 min.

One of the best day trips from Toronto is actually still in the GTA - but Milton’s primo location along the Niagara Escarpment can make it feel like you’re further out than

you really are. There are several conservation areas to choose from (it’s part of nature-rich Halton region) including the family-friendly Crawford Lake Conservation Area, which is home to a reproduction longhouse village where you can learn about the local Indigenous history. You can marvel at 1,000-year-old cedar trees or go cliff climbing at Rattlesnake Point or go paddle boarding, skiing and mountain biking at Kelso Conservation Area. Hot tip: Stop at Thai House in Campbellville on your drive back for amazing authentic Thai food.

HORSESHOE RESORT

Drive time from Toronto: 1hr 15min.

This four-season resort in Barrie has something for all day trippers—even if you don’t ski. Snow bunnies can dig into fat biking, skating, tubing and snow shoeing. Warmer-weather activities include golf, mountain biking, a wakeboard cable park, treetop trekking and “Yamaha Adventures” (ATVs and dirt bikes). Afterwards, pull up a seat on their now-50,000 square foot (no, really!) outdoor patio for dining, which extends nearly all the way to the the ski hill.

THE FASCINATING ORIGINS OF BUTTER TARTS... CANADA’S MOST BELOVED DESSERT

Where did the butter tart come from? And is it still a butter tart if you add bacon? Here’s the surprisingly controversial story of this sweet little treat. Within its fragile pastry shell and its sticky filling of butter, sugar, syrup and egg, the butter tart holds Canada’s memories of long weekends, country bakeries, recipes handed down through generations—and an eternal debate over raisins.

Though it is made from pantry staples, the alchemy of a butter tart’s ingredients makes for something all its own. And its simplicity means you’ll usually have what you need on hand to whip up a dozen. Plus, they freeze well (some say they taste even better frozen, especially on a hot summer day). But why do butter tarts and Canada seem so inseparable?

For me, it’s the memory of eating oozing tarts on a cottage deck in the midday sun, followed by a dive into the lake to wash off all the sticky residue. Often, it was too

hot to bake our own, so my family and I would drive into town and wait in line for butter tarts at the local café, sometimes sharing one on the car ride home.

Whatever your own experience, the butter tart is firmly tied to our Canadian identity. People become lifelong devotees to the tart, pledging undying loyalty to their local bakery or their mother’s version.

Controversy #1: The Butter Tarts Origin Story

The exact origin of butter tarts is unknown. Some credit

40 Power to Move You
Power to Move You 41

the filles du roi: the young French women who settled in New France between 1663 and 1673 to marry voyageurs. They combined their knowledge of pastry with the ingredients on hand and, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, created butter tarts.

Others look to settlers from the “border counties” between Scotland and England, who arrived in Canada in the 1800s toting Ecclefechan tarts, also called border tarts. Food writer Elizabeth Baird believes the treat, filled with dried fruit and made in a pie tin, evolved into the butter tart. Further proof? Immigrants from the same region also settled in Georgia, home to pecan pie.

However, culinary historian Liz Driver, author of Culinary Landmarks: A Bibliography of Canadian Cookbooks, 1825–1949, suggests that perhaps homemakers who had dairy, eggs, flour, lard and brown sugar put them together into a humble tart to feed farmhands, family and visitors year-round. This, she says, explains the butter tart’s similarities to Quebec’s sugar pie (which contains whipping cream); the butter tart is a parallel invention born of necessity and similar circumstances. “Why is it,” she asks, “that Canadians can’t just accept that we made something ourselves?”

Controversy #2: National Dessert Status

Does the butter tart deserve icon status in our broad and diverse country? If nostalgia and history are reason enough, then the answer is yes. In 2019, Canada Post even put the butter tart on a limited-edition stamp. (It did not, sadly, taste like a butter tart.)

If that’s not enough, then also consider age and geographic supremacy: butter tarts date to at least the early 1900s and are popular from Newfoundland to British Columbia. But what about Nanaimo bars, a latecomer to the handheld dessert scene, having originated in the 1950s? Well, a 2018 voting bracket created by Daybreak North, a CBC radio show in B.C., still crowned butter tarts the champion holiday treat over Nanaimo bars.

Okay, so they’re nationally revered, but are they a Canadian icon? South of the border, Americans have largely remained unaware of our beloved tart - their loss. In classic Canuck fashion, many Canadians find it more reason

to propel the tart to icon status.

Controversy #3: Tours, Trails and Tension

Across the country, tens of thousands of Canadians have taken part in festivals and tours that celebrate the not-sohumble butter tart. It seems every small bakery, especially in rural Ontario, sells them—some displaying ribbons and awards from taste-offs and festivals. The largest festival is Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival, which has been running since 2013 in Midland. (In its inaugural year, the festival sold out of 10,000 tarts by 11 a.m.) Around 65,000 people come for one butter tart-filled day in June every year.

In 2006, bakeries and businesses in Wellington County, Ontario, launched Canada’s first self-guided butter tart tourist trail. In 2011, the Kawarthas Northumberland tourism board started a butter tart tour of more than 50 stops through the Kawartha Lakes district, Northumberland County, and Peterborough, Ontario. The Wellington trail team was not pleased and sent a cease-and-desist letter to the new tour. Things calmed down after the two sides met over butter tarts (yes, really) and decided to co-exist.

Controversy #4: The Perfect Butter Tart

Raisins or no raisins? Our passion over the addition of dried fruit has become an ongoing conversation among Canadians. Perhaps it’s what keeps our country together: we love to bicker over something so small and so sweet.

Nuts vs. no nuts: While some (including me) feel that walnuts or pecans take the tart into pie territory, others prefer a little crunch.

Other add-ins: Formerly restricted to raisins, currants and nuts, fillings have started to reflect our country’s diverse cuisines. For creative bakers the tarts are a canvas to experiment with flavours such as cardamom, Nutella, ginger and miso. Some tarts definitely push the classic recipe - there are versions filled with cheesecake or that taste like poutine. Bacon is becoming a popular add-in and bolsters the case for eating butter tarts at breakfast.

Runny or firm? Do you like them so gooey that you’ll need a swim after, or firm enough to eat one-handed while doing chores? Until you find your favourite, maybe you’ll just have to keep testing them all.

TEQUILA-LIME GRILLED CHICKEN

INGREDIENTS

One whole chicken

½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup silver tequila

4 fresh limes, juiced and zested

1 jalapeno chile, finely chopped

1 teaspoon paprika

2 teaspoons sea salt

1 ½ pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs

Vegetable oil as needed

DIRECTIONS

To a medium bowl, add all marinade ingredients except chicken; whisk to combine. Add chicken and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate to marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Using a silicone pastry brush, brush grill pan with enough vegetable oil to lightly coat. Remove the chicken from the marinade, and place on the grill. Cook on one side until grill marks develop and releases easily from the pan. Pick up chicken and turn it 45° clock-wise, and lay back down on the grill to create a crisscross grill mark, continue grilling on the first side until grill marks develop and chicken releases from grill, about 8 minutes total. Repeat this with remaining chicken. Flip chicken and cook until an instant read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken reads 165°.

Depending on size of chicken, serves 4 to 6.

SHORTAGE OF PLANNERS DOES NOT BODE WELL FOR HOME BUILDING INDUSTRY

Over the past few years, residential developers have had to contend with a perfect storm of obstacles, namely COVID, labour shortages, material supply issues, inflation, and rising interest rates. Now, they face yet another equally disturbing situation - one that does not bode well for building homes.

There is presently a significant shortage of city planners across Ontario municipalities. The planning workforce is being depleted, and the supply of new talent is not keeping up with demand. Data from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) indicates that, as of April, there were about 150 job openings in Toronto alone. Roughly 750 positions are posted on the OPPI job board each year.

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), a nationwide professional organization, has seen an increase in the

number of job openings for planners on its job board. The organization reports that job postings spiked by 78 per cent from 2020 to 2021, and by another 53 per cent from 2021 to 2022.

Although planning programs at Ontario universities graduated 439 planners last year - 185 with Bachelor’s degrees, 246 with Master’s degrees, and eight with PhDs - that number is still short of requirements. Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark noted in a media article that the number of graduates is

46 Power to Move You

not enough to keep up with the number of annual job openings. What it also means is that the province faces significant challenges as it seeks to fulfill its promise to build 1.5 million homes by 2031.

A municipal benchmarking study of the Greater Toronto Area done in fall 2022 by Altus Group indicated that municipal staffing in planning departments has increased only marginally in the past two years. The study also notes that municipal approval timelines in the GTA are among the worst of major municipalities across Canada, and have deteriorated significantly when compared to a study done in 2020 figures. Average timelines are 27 to 51 per cent longer than those reported in 2020.

COINCIDENCE?

Approval timelines range from 10 to 34 months, depending on the municipality, with most types of applications taking 20-24 months on average GTA-wide. Average approval timelines in the GTA are higher than in any other part of Canada. In Toronto, it takes 32 months on average to approve a development application.

A report by Toronto’s planning department in 2020 indicated the city had about 60 unfilled positions in a 477-person department. About 25 per cent of the department’s staff came on board in 2020, so there are a lot of new faces.

Meanwhile, in the City of London, ON, a report indicated that city hall was short 12 staffers in planning and development in 2022, and project approvals are slowing. As a result, some work has not proceeded.

Part of the problem, of course, is the job itself. Planners often find themselves in the position of having to attend and face off with angry residents at community meetings held mainly in the evenings. The other issue is wages, as planners can make more money working in the private sector. Meantime, slowdowns also occurred during the pandemic, with many planners working from home.

Minister Clark has reached out to Labour, Immigration,

Training and Skills Development Minister Monte McNaughton and Colleges and Universities Minister Jill Dunlop to help solve the problem. The thinking is that a plan is needed to attract more recruits to the profession, particularly in northern Ontario.

According to media reports, Clark has asked McNaughton and Dunlop to meet with the OPPI to see how their departments could help. Possible solutions include making it easier to accredit planners who’ve been trained outside Ontario, as well as expanding university training programs in the province.

To ensure residential projects keep moving through the pipeline, we must ensure there are enough planners on hand – and in the pipeline to replace those who will soon be retiring. A shortage of planners at Toronto city hall is one of the reasons it takes so long to get a project approved.

THE LABYRINTH OF APPROVALS AND LOGISTICAL HURDLES

In Toronto, a new Housing Action Plan was passed by the city council that introduced a broad range of initiatives to either meet or exceed the provincial target of building 285,000 housing units over 10 years in the municipality. That goal will be in jeopardy if there aren’t enough planners on board.

The longer the approval process, the more time a housing developer must spend sitting idle on a project, which costs thousands of dollars per month. A study in 2022 done by Altus Group found that each month of delay costs anywhere from $2.60 to $3.30 per square foot in additional construction costs. For an 800-squarefoot condo, this means that six months of delays can add between $12,480 and $15,840 to the price. That expense is passed on to homebuyers.

The labyrinth of approvals and logistical hurdles that developers must navigate to get shovels in the ground on a residential project is complicated enough. A shortage of planners won’t help matters.

CHECKLIST TO ASSESS ADHD DOCTORS AND CLINICIANS

8 questions about ADHD to ask any prospective physician, psychologist, neurologist, or other clinician who might help your family. The answers will reveal their true knowledge and understanding of attention deficit.

“ADHD is generally ignored in medical education,” says William Dodson, M.D., author of the forthcoming book What You Wish Your Doctor Knew About ADHD. “Just 5 years ago, 93 percent of adult psychiatry residencies didn’t mention ADHD in four years of training and, amazingly, half of pediatric residencies didn’t mention ADHD. So if you have a physician who has taken the personal time to get up to speed on ADHD, you have found a real gem.”

If, on the other hand, your family doctor or general practitioner has not kept pace with ADHD research and understanding, you are not alone - and not without resources.

Bring the following questions with you when interviewing a physician, psychologist, neurologist, or other clinician

who you’d like to evaluate and treat symptoms of ADHD in your child or yourself. His or her answers should tell you, without question, whether you’ve found that gem.

1. How many of your pediatric and adult patients have ADHD?

“About 1 in every 5 people who walks into a mental health office is going to have ADHD,” says Dr. Dodson. “The problem is that the diagnosis is routinely missed, and that’s because very few physicians have any training whatsoever in ADHD.”

In short, ADHD is a specialty. And only specialists with extensive experience evaluating and treating ADHD symptoms - alongside symptoms of commonly co-occurring conditions like mood disorders, GAD, and oppositional defiant disorder - are equipped to accurately diag-

48 Power to Move You

nose and address the condition. If your child’s doctor is a lovely and proficient pediatrician but is new to ADHD, you need to find a specialist.

“It’s unfortunate, in this day and age, that some people go to their family doctor and hear, ‘ADHD doesn’t exist for adults,’” says Michelle Novotni, Ph.D., former president and CEO of the Attention Deficit Disorder Association. This myth is simply not true. The National Institutes of Health says that approximately 4% of U.S. adults - that is 14.4 million adults - have a diagnosis of ADHD.

2. How do you evaluate the symptoms of ADHD in children and adults?

For children, the answer is clear: A clinician should use the symptom guidelines outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder – 5th Edition, along with standardized and normative rat-

ings, to diagnose ADHD. Joel Nigg, Ph.D., director of the Attention Project at Oregon Health & Science University, recommends using the Connors Rating Scale, the Child Behavior Checklist, the Strengths and Difficulties Checklist, and the ADHD Rating Scale. “Parents and teachers can complete these and the clinician can score them and determine the probability that a child is in the extreme range compared to the national average,” Nigg says.

Unfortunately, the DSM-V guidelines are severely child focused, so a clinician evaluating an adult’s symptoms must take the extra step of interviewing family members, friends, and even colleagues. “The accuracy of diagnosis is much, much higher if you have input from two or more informants who have information about symptoms in several settings,” Nigg says.

3. How can we be sure it is just ADHD?

Power to Move You 49

“70% of children, adolescents and adults with an ADHD nervous system will have at least one other psychiatric diagnosis; 57% will have two or more,” Dodson says, underscoring the prevalence of comorbid conditions existing alongside ADHD.

And then there are all those medical and psychological conditions that mimic ADHD. “These include a history of trauma, mood disorders, developmental delays, and a laundry list of medical and metabolic conditions… like sleep disorders and thyroid disorders,” Nigg says.

Your doctor should recognize this, conduct a detailed medical history, and include screening tests for related conditions in his or her thorough ADHD evaluation.

4. What medication and dosage works best for your patients?

This is a trick question. 85 percent of people with ADHD will experience significant benefit from one of the “29 FDA-approved, first-line stimulant formulations for the treatment of ADHD, which are all just different ways of delivering only two molecules: methylphenidate and amphetamine,” Dodson says. “Nothing is going to predict which molecule or which dose of a medication will get someone to their optimal level of benefit with no side effects. It has to be determined by trial and error because… the only thing that does determine the right dose is how efficiently the medication is absorbed out of the GI tract, and this is something that changes constantly for children under the age of 16.”

5. What medication side effects are acceptable?

Another trick question. While no side effects are acceptable, some people are more willing to live with minor side effects because the benefits of taking the medication outweigh them.

6. What about treating symptoms with food and

vitamins?

Research is inconclusive for nutrition plans to treat symptoms of ADHD. That said, many families anecdotally report good results with fish oil, iron supplements, and low-sugar, high-protein foods. Your doctor should be able to recommend foods and supplements that have worked well for other patients, and help you introduce these natural treatments alongside medication and behavior therapy.

7. How often will we meet to evaluate and adjust treatment?

You should see your doctor at least every two to four weeks. When starting a new treatment plan, Dr. Dodson likes to see his patients a few times a week because, as he says, stimulant medications take effect within one hour. So you only need one day to know whether it’s working and to make changes.

If you or your child is using ADHD medication - with or without behavior therapy or other natural therapies - your doctor should establish and routinely check a monitoring system that collects feedback from multiple sources such as teachers and family members. Your doctor should evaluate improvements in academic/professional and behavioral/social functioning alongside the incidence of side effects when making his or her recommendations for dosing changes.

8. How will you communicate treatment instructions to me?

There is only one right answer here: “I will write them down.” That answer might be obvious for adults with ADHD, but Dr. Dodson also points out that, “There is at least a 50/50 chance that the parent who is accompanying the child to the doctor also has ADHD. That is just the genetics of ADHD. Failure to address that and treat that is the leading cause of treatment failure for children with ADHD.”
