We know that during your child’s first five years, nurturing the development of compassion, independence and resilience is just as important as setting the stage for reading and math. That’s why our Balanced Learning® approach combines character development with play and academics to give children a strong, well-rounded foundation for learning and life.

We believe who children become is as important as what they know.

Explore The City Boo-tiful

On Halloween, people tend to fall into one of two categories: Those who really go for it and those who do the bare minimum. While there’s no “right” way to dress up, it’s important as parents to occasionally push our kids out of their comfort zone — and I’m not just talking about going big on October 31 and having the whole family go as a different Barbie.

Encouraging kids to break out of their bubble applies beyond Halloween to all facets of their lives, whether it be through the foods they eat, the people they interact with or the places they play. That’s why this edition of PLAYGROUND is focused on helping families delve into Orlando’s vibrant and colorful culture, with the hope that you’ll discover something new together!

On page 28, we’ve rounded up the best cooking classes for families and kids that teach culinary skills beyond warming up some dino nuggets or Kraft Mac & Cheese. On page 12, we’ve highlighted some of Orlando’s cultural gems. Some ideas for a fun afternoon include trying dim sum in the Mills 50 district, checking out one of the city’s many museum enrichment programs or venturing to the Kennedy Space Center.

Another cultural hub in town (and arguably the best place to step into someone else’s shoes by simply picking up a book) is the Winter Park Library & Events Center. They graciously opened their doors to us and our adorable models for a fashion-filled day. You can see the styles assembled by Tugboat & the Bird and beautifully captured by Simply Shelby Photography in our Fall Fashion Lookbook on page 18.

And since this is our October/November issue, we've included a round-up of the most pumpkin spice-filled events of the season on page 32, from the best fall festivals to the spookiest Halloween soirées. Now that we’ve done the legwork for where to go, the pressing question is… How many of these events will you decide to dress up for? We’ll let you decide!

PLAYfully Yours, @maddyzollo

Start with Stories

Kids love tales about themselves and their families, so engage their curiosity by telling them stories that have been passed down verbally by your family.

Start with stories about them: Talk about the day they were born, when they first walked and talked, and the funny things they did as toddlers and preschoolers. Share stories about their parents and grandparents when they were young: Kids love to hear about when a parent dealt with a schoolyard bully or how grandparents met and married.

Talk about what life was like: Teach them about what technology, cars and clothes were like when their ancestors were young.

Introduce them to family celebrities: Tell them about the most humorous, memorable or notorious things that family members have done.

Give It Props

Like actors on a stage, present your family history with props. Search attics and look for important family pieces like jewelry, furniture, clothes, handmade quilts and old toys.

Family Tree Fun

Consider these fun ways to pique your family’s interest in the past:

Engage with photographs: Kids love to see dad when he still had hair or mom when she wore 1980s fashions. Old photos are especially intriguing because of the differences in fashion, cars and homes.

Make a list of family heirlooms: Talk about why each is an important memento.

Dig out old technology: Think rotary phones, old typewriters and ham radios. Show photos or videos of a jukebox.

Play old (and new!) family videos: Compare how the video technology has changed over time as you watch.

Visit a museum: Look at historic forms of transportation, such as steam locomotives, Model Ts and horse-drawn carriages.

Make Ancestry-Inspired Art

Break out the art supplies to capture your lineage creatively. Even preschoolers can fill in a simple family tree. Printable templates are widely available online.

Craft a family tree: Use photographs and portraits or produce a digital presentation.

Create a family crest: Frame it for a virtual family reunion or to display in your home.

Explore historical handwriting: Look at copies of the Constitution, Declaration of

Independence or old family letters, then help your child explore cursive or handlettering with a calligraphy pen or quill.

Design and sew a family quilt: Fashion the squares from family baby blankets, clothes and other materials.

Compile a family cookbook: Document everything from grandma’s famous pumpkin pie to a secret gravy recipe that’s been passed down.

Link to Family Landmarks

Form a tangible connection to the past through terrain, buildings, graves and neighborhoods.

Tour the family cemetery: Study the gravestones and talk about what the dates and symbols mean.

Take a self-guided walking tour: Wander through the town where your family originated and talk about why certain landmarks and buildings are significant to you.

Find the locations shown in old photos: Visit the spot where a family portrait was taken years ago and recreate the pose.

MEET MOMPRENEUR: Lindsay Muscato

Local mom and inventor of TELETIES dishes on startups, inspiration and giving back.

There’s a lot to love about having long hair, but sometimes Rapunzel-like tresses can get in the way.

“You want to bend down, go outside on a windy day or turn your head quickly? Get ready for a face full of hair,” says Central Florida mom and serial entrepreneur Lindsay Muscato. “It’s distracting and aggravating, and traditional hair ties — the way most people try to deal with it — just add insult to injury.”

After struggling to manage her mane with standard hair ties that are no more than glorified rubber bands, Lindsay put her background in fashion, design and entrepreneurship to work. In 2017, she created a light but resilient band of

stretchy plastic to hold the hair without causing damage. Her design resembles old telephone cords, which inspired the “tele” in her company name: TELETIES.

Lindsay’s design immediately took off, and TELETIES has now sold millions of hair ties and evolved from Lindsay working out of her garage to a 22,000-squarefoot warehouse with a full team of employees.

PLAYGROUND asked Lindsay what inspired her to launch TELETIES, what advice she has for other business-minded mothers, why she’s tied the fight against unruly hair to the battle against cancer and more.

How did you get the idea for TELETIES and what makes them special?

I played soccer growing up, and I would find myself in the middle of the field with my head literally thrown over, putting my hair back up because my hair tie wouldn’t stay in. But I really came up with the concept of TELETIES after my two premature babies were born. I was constantly washing bottles, which left the hair ties on my wrist wet. I thought to myself, “There’s got to be a better way.”

I spent about three years experimenting in my garage with different materials and designs. We settled on the spiral design because it creates a strong grip that locks hair in place with less slipping than traditional ties. It’s counterintuitive, but this design makes TELETIES both grippier when you want them to stay in and easier to remove when you want to take them out. You’re not pulling out a clump of hair along with the hair tie. And, of course, the material is water-resistant.

Since the launch of your hair ties, you’ve expanded to offer other hair accessories, like clips and scrunchies. How do you come up with new products?

All of the ideas for our next products come from my personal everyday needs. Just like how I was tired of my hair tie getting wet, I was tired of my hair clips breaking, so I spent two years designing and developing a clip that has the perfect material to not break and that stays in your hair and looks super stylish!

Kids Love TELETIES Too!

Lindsay shares her three fave picks for littles:

• “The tiny TELES were designed with kids in mind. They are perfect for kids’ thin hair, but they also fit on the end of braids and top knots for adults.”

• “All the bright colors are great. Eat Glitter for Breakfast is always a favorite.”

• “Children also like the TELETOTE keychains to clip onto their school or sports bags to carry all their TELETIES.”

You donate a portion of your profits to Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE), a nonprofit organization that helps people and families affected by hereditary cancers. Why?

I understand firsthand how important nonprofit organizations like FORCE can be in providing resources and early detection. I was tested at a young age because my father carried the BRCA1 mutation and thankfully tested negative. Even though I never met my grandmother who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 36, I promised myself that I would do my part to educate others and bring awareness to the BRCA1 mutation.

What advice would you give other moms looking to start their own company?

My advice would be to stay true to yourself and trust your gut. Pick your own path and stay positive and focused. There will be naysayers and those who don’t share your vision, but don’t allow them to distract you or push you off course. Be intentional about staying in a forward motion every day. That’s especially important when you encounter a setback, which you will. Those obstacles will be easier to overcome if you stay in the mindset of stepping forward and thinking about what’s next. Finally, treat people the way that you would want to be treated. That’s how we’ve been

Edible Education Experience

Best for Ages: 10+

Edible Education Experience, the nonprofit that runs the Emeril Lagasse Foundation Kitchen House and Culinary Garden in Orlando, offers classes with a “seed-to-table” concept (the art of sourcing dishes from a garden) for all ages. Besides for their beloved kids’ summer camp, they frequently host field trips and other programs on school holidays that focus on teaching littles how to create culinary creations. Be on the lookout for family-friendly chef nights where kids ten and up and their grown-ups work with a local chef to source ingredients from the on-site 3,000, square foot garden and then create a mouth-watering menu from the harvest.

The Taste of Curiosity

Best for Ages: 3 and up

Oviedo’s The Taste of Curiosity was inspired by a couple’s 6-year-old son and their love for cooking and teaching. They offer virtual and in-person classes for every age group. Homeschoolers will love cooking together at the weekly Homeschool Group. Older kids can mingle while creating delicious meals at Teen Thursdays. There’s even a My Grown-Up and Me pasta-making class or get the whole crew in on the action with Family Pasta Night, which includes spaghetti, meatballs and a whole lot of fun.
