Nemours Children’s Health goes well beyond medicine to help ensure good health. New Year, New Baby!

I can’t believe it, but another year is coming to a close, and 2023 will be here before we know it. I have a new mantra come January: Go with the flow.

My big gift from Santa is a baby boy who is due right at the start of the new year, so to say there will be big changes ahead for my family is an understatement. This also makes the holiday season a little more hectic: Decorating a new nursery! Finding holiday dresses for my bump! Dealing with pregnancy exhaustion on top of the general December craziness! But knowing my family is expanding soon has reminded me to live in the moment. I know I only have a finite amount of time left with my daughter being my only child, so I’m focused on celebrating all the snuggles and special moments with her.

Those little moments are what the holidays are all about, so I hope you find time away from the stressors and simply enjoy this magical time of the year. And, if you need ideas, this issue of PLAYGROUND is here to help.

If you’re looking for places to find the best holiday treats, Kirsten Harrington’s Sweet Treats Trail (page 28) maps out the most mouth-watering desserts in town. Amanda Keefer’s list of local volunteer opportunities (page 12) highlights ways to bond with your family while giving back to the Orlando community. Christmas Island, a song by The Andrews Sisters, inspired 13-year-old Paulina Senges to write and self-publish a festive story about two friends and their imagination. The goal of #HashtagLunchbag (hashtaglunchbag. org) is to spread love by bringing bagged lunches to those in need. The organization hosts events across the country where attendees of all ages pack and distribute lunches to individuals experiencing homelessness or food insecurity. Children’s Home Society of Florida

Children’s Home Society of Florida (chsfl.org/ locations/central), which works to end the need for foster care by delivering solutions to help keep families together, offers a variety of volunteer projects that can be completed at home. Remote projects include assembling a calming kit, building a beach day basket or creating positive affirmations jars. All volunteer opportunities, including some in-person options, are listed on the website’s monthly calendar.

Foundation for Foster Children

Serving over 2,000 children in foster care in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, the Foundation for Foster Children (foundationforfosterchildren.org) provides personalized support to individual kids based on what they need to succeed. Families can support this organization by participating in the Make a Birthday Card project. The premise is simple: Make gender-neutral birthday cards and then mail them to the organization to be distributed when a child celebrates a birthday.

National Charity League

This statewide nonprofit just opened a new chapter, known as the Citrus Blossom Chapter (nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/ citrusblossom), right here in Central Florida. The National Charity League’s mission is to foster and strengthen mother and daughter relationships through community service, leadership development

and cultural experiences. Working with local organizations like Harbor House, the Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Alzheimer's Association, Give Kids the World, Special Olympics, Operation Gratitude and the American Red Cross, there are tons of opportunities for Orlando mamas and their daughters to team up for a great cause.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida

The three Central Florida-based Ronald McDonald Houses (rmhccf. org) offer a variety of volunteer opportunities where kids can get involved. Families can work together to assemble kits that include toiletries or individually wrapped snacks for those staying at the Ronald McDonald House to help make their stay a little more comfortable. Another way to help is by rounding up a group for the Share-A-Meal program, where you prepare a dish for Ronald McDonald House families in their on-site kitchen.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida

There’s always work to be done at this Feeding America food bank (feedhopenow.org). Volunteers help with a variety of tasks, which can include anything from sorting canned goods to packing disaster relief boxes for communities in need. Younger kids (ages 5–9) can volunteer on Family Day. Older kids (ages 10–15) can volunteer with an adult chaperone. Teens (ages 16+) can assist at Mercy Kitchen, where they will pack meals for after-school and summer programs.

The Salvation Army

In addition to monetary donations for the Bed & Bread campaign, opportunities to support the Salvation Army (salvationarmyflorida.org/orlando) include sponsoring holiday stockings for children and seniors, serving meals to those in need or getting involved in the annual HOPESgiving efforts to serve during Thanksgiving. The popular Angel Tree program matches kids with anonymous donors who provide gifts of clothes and toys. Keep an eye out for Angel Trees in your community!

United Against Poverty

At Family Volunteer Night at United Against Poverty (also known as UP Orlando) (uporlando.org), kids can help stock, clean and organize the shelves of the organization’s grocery store. This event takes place on the second Friday of every month, and pizza is provided. If you can’t make it to the monthly event, you can also sign up to volunteer as a family on an alternate date.

U.S. Hunger

Over the last decade, U.S. Hunger (formerly Feeding Children Everywhere) (ushunger.org/volunteer) has activated more than 850,000 volunteers to distribute over 150 million meals across the globe. They address hunger by engaging volunteers, educating on the root causes of food insecurity and creating access to nutritious meals for low-income families and individuals. The Central Florida operation hosts numerous volunteer events out of Longwood to pack and ship meals to those in need and also encourages families to initiate their own meal-packing events.

Here are 10 nonprofit organizations in Central Florida that offer opportunities for kids and their families to volunteer together.

Tips on how to build your board:

You can substitute just about everything for your favorite holiday snacks, but a balance of fresh fruits and veggies will keep you feeling healthy and charged on a hectic December day. Keep it festive by selecting nibbles that come in holiday colors.

Place the larger items first, like your ranch dip, Brie and kiwi tree. Then slowly add items — from placing black olives, tomatoes and cucumbers near the dip to keeping the crackers and cheese together. Don’t forget to give your elf a bowl of sweet treats like marshmallows or chocolate chips!

Kiwi Tree: Slice green kiwi in a circle and place on board in the shape of a tree. Add a sliced starfruit to the top.

Ranch Dip: Turn this go-to dip into a friendly snowman. Simply add black olives for eyes and small piece of carrot for nose.

Cucumber Stars: Use a starshaped cookie cutter on the center of cucumber. Add pomegranate arils to the center. Then place the cut-out stars around the ranch dip for a little extra sparkle.

Grinch Kabob: Slide a mini marshmallow, a strawberry with the top cut off, banana slice and grape onto a bamboo skewer.

Flair: Sprinkle rosemary, dried cranberries and pomegranate arils for delectable details.

Historic Downtown Sanford's annual Parade of Lights on December 10 from 6–8 p.m. offers visitors a dazzling evening of exciting parade floats, lights and music along 1st Street to celebrate the holidays.

The Winter Park Holiday Boat Parade sets sail on December 10 at 6 p.m. Family and friends can gather at Dinky Dock Park to see the impressive boat and dock holiday decorations created by residents and local business sponsors.

The Lake Conway Boat Parade takes place in different areas on three different nights: December 16, 17 and 18. The City of Belle Isle keeps select parks open late for people to view the parade.

Theme Park Celebrations

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party might be the most magical time of the year for Disney goers. During this special ticketed event that runs on select nights until December 22, the Magic Kingdom is bursting with holiday cheer thanks to snowfall on Main Street, sweet treat pop-up stations, special shows and holiday makeovers for several rides (like the Jingle Cruise!).

True North: A Magical New Holiday Musical is a broadway-style performance for young audiences at The Orlando Repertory Theatre that runs until December 22.

New Year's Eve Fun
