Baby on Board

Does anyone else feel like summer snuck up on them? I sure do, but that’s probably because I’ve been in a twilight zone known as the fourth trimester. It’s when days are filled with feedings, diaper changes and snuggly newborn naps, and you’re not sure the last time you showered.

Now that we're past that teeny, tiny infant stage, I already miss it. As I’m writing this, my son Rocco is 4 months old and doing all sorts of big boy things, like smiling, laughing and rolling over. And guess what? He’s already gotten his first pair of wings. This past February, we flew out West with him (2 months old at the time) to celebrate my friend’s wedding in Boulder, Colorado. I had been on the fence about going — since babies and planes tend not to be the best combination — but I’m so glad we did. The extra planning it takes to travel with a baby was so worth the memories we shared together as a family. If you’re debating taking the littles on vacation this summer, I think you should go for it!

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) Registration

Once upon a time, I traveled in France with a companion who lost their U.S. passport. That moment of panic on the train station platform in Paris when they realized it was gone is etched in my mind. Throw kids in the mix, and you’d have a complete nightmare scenario.

Luckily, I made sure we both registered online with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before our departure, which helped make this disaster a little more manageable. A completed STEP registration provides an extra level of security.

From the train station, we headed to the U.S. Embassy in Paris and received expedited service and an emergency passport for my travel buddy. Without a completed STEP registration, we might have spent an entire day (or more) waiting at the U.S. Embassy for help, which wouldn’t mix with rambunctious kiddos in tow.

School’s out — here’s how to get an A+ in relaxation

Summer is upon us, which means it’s a great time to add some fun to the weekly schedule. Before the break, your child’s days were intense, with one class after another and rarely any downtime. Days were crammed with assignments, tests, competitions and projects — barely enough time to squeeze in a 20-minute lunch break. Then there were the after-school activities: clubs, sports, music lessons and more. Add all the social events on top of that, and kids and parents alike were sure to let out a collective sigh of exhaustion at bedtime.

That’s why summer break is the perfect time to encourage more relaxation and play. When we rest, we are able to dream, imagine and ask ourselves who we want to be, where we want to go next and what we want to spend our time doing. Extra time to play gives us the opportunity to try out different ideas to see what fits.

Here are three ways to loosen up your family’s daily regimen to let the exploration begin:

Have a ConversationFamily

Once school is out, get the family together for a discussion. Let your kids know that you want them to enjoy their summer and have more downtime but explain that the family still has a house to clean, pets to feed and chores to complete. Talk about finding a good balance between play, rest and daily responsibilities. Let everyone have a say and discuss how they envision their ideal summer. Ask about the activities your kids are interested in. Getting kids’ input makes them feel like their voice is valued and included in the decision-making.

Create a Game Plan

Kids will be kids, so their ideal game plan might include sleeping until noon or spending hours glued to their screens. Find a way to incorporate their ideas by coming up with a game plan that works for everyone. Maybe designate two or three days per week to be lazy days with no planned activities. Or consider designating time for activities and chores during the first half of the day so kids can relax during the other half. Over summer, you want a balanced calendar that values leisure and fun over a rigid schedule. If you’re worried about too much social media or video games, set a daily limit.

While you can’t go wrong with a beach vacation, sometimes it’s fun to mix things up. If you’re itching for a new experience, how about exploring a big city?

One of the best things about an urban escape is the sheer number of options at your fingertips. It’s truly a choose-your-own-adventure type of vacation: Hotel or vacation rental? Hole-in-the-wall diner or five-star restaurant? Bus tour or museum?

In the spirit of wanderlust, PLAYGROUND talked to three local families who embarked on a metropolitan getaway. Here are their top 10 lists to help you make the most of your family vacay in the big city.

1. SOAK IN SOME ART

So much art to see, so little time! Little artists will love browsing the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor gallery of wall murals and street art showcasing vibrant colors and energy. The Wynwood district is a former industrial area of Miami, redeveloped with colorful murals that cover the walls of many of the buildings. Visitors can also find eclectic cafes, restaurants and shops.

2. EAT GREAT CUBAN FOOD

This Miami favorite is an absolute must! Versailles Restaurant, known as the world’s most famous Cuban restaurant, sits in the heart of Little Havana, the epicenter of Cuban culture in Miami. One could argue that you really didn’t experience Miami unless you visited Versailles Restaurant for a Cuban sandwich or café con leche.

3. HAVE FUN IN THE SUN

You can’t go to Miami without hitting South Beach! It’s the quintessential Miami experience giving all the art deco vibes. It’s best to go early and visit the “local’s section,” which is the area South of 5th Street. The South Pointe Park has direct access to the beach area most often visited by locals as well as walking trails, picnic areas, the pier (excellent location for a great photo), restrooms, outdoor showers, a café (to grab some ice cream!) and a bark park. There is also a mini water playground for kids, along with a playground surrounded by tropical landscaping. Metered parking, bike rentals, a shuttle and a parking garage are nearby.

Miami holds a special place in my heart because it's where I went to college (Go ‘Canes!) and where my husband and I started our life together. Since relocating to Orlando, we’ve taken many trips back to Miami to play tourist with our kids, and it never disappoints!

People often think of Miami as a nightlife destination, but it's so much more than that. It’s a vibrant city with tons of culture and endless opportunities for families to have a great time during the summer.

Here’s a former local’s take on the Miami must-sees:

4. TAKE A BOAT TOUR

Experience the city from a unique perspective. Dive into your Miami vacation with a boat tour, getting you up close and personal with some of the most luxurious waterfront homes in Florida. Your crew will channel their inner pirate as you board the Pirate Boat Cruise that takes you through the most popular areas of Biscayne Bay, Venetian Islands, Star Island and South Beach. This will surely be the highlight of any kid’s trip!

5. SEE SOME WILDLIFE

Let your animal-loving kiddos go wild at Zoo Miami, one of the largest and most diverse zoos in the country! They can see everything from lions and tigers to elephants and giraffes. Zoo Miami offers a sweeping 27-acre Amazon & Beyond exhibit featuring jaguars, anacondas, giant river otters and stingray touch tanks. The zoo is also home to the Aviary Wings of Asia exhibit, with hundreds of Asian birds in a large free-flight area that feels like an Asian jungle. Another popular attraction is Dr. Wilde's World, including a new Wild Earth Jeep Simulator where guests can take a virtual African safari.

6. GET YOUR SHOP ON

There are many great shopping locations in Miami, but if you’re looking for an outdoor, family-friendly shopping district, head to the neighborhood of Coral Gables. You’ll find several blocks filled with upscale boutiques, restaurants and specialty shops in different clusters, such as Merrick Park, Miracle Mile and Giralda Plaza. Merrick Park has several trendy children’s boutiques, such as Boy Meets Girl, Bognar & Piccolini and Babycottons.

7. HIT UP KID-FRIENDLY MUSEUMS

Kids will have a blast exploring hands-on exhibits and activities at Frost Science Museum. Dinosaur bones, an aquarium and a planetarium all come together in this modern building, that’s also home to the Mummies of the World exhibit until September.

8. EXPLORE A HIDDEN GEM

One of Miami’s most historic sites, Coral Gables’ Venetian Pool is formed from an old coral-rock quarry and fed 820,000 gallons of spring water daily. Considered one of the world’s most unique public swimming pools, the Venetian Pool is a hidden gem and a great alternative to the beach for family fun in the sun.

9. REST & PLAY

There is no shortage of 5-star resorts in Miami. For families, I recommend North Beach resorts with more kid-friendly amenities, such as the Fontainebleau Resort, Loews Miami Beach and Acqualina Resort. They don’t skimp on luxury but also offer extras that parents look for, like children’s camps, lazy pools and marine biology programs. These resorts are totally family-chic.

10. CLIMB A LOCAL PLAYGROUND

Let the kids blow off some steam at the Bayfront Park Playground, a futuristic playground overlooking the ocean in downtown Miami. With its unique play equipment, water features and stunning views of the city skyline and the bay, you'll feel like you're in a sci-fi movie. Plus, it’s right next to Bayside Marketplace, a popular tourist destination for shopping, eating and overlooking the Port of Miami.

1. GET LOST IN A PARK

What’s a trip to Chicago without a selfie in front of the Bean?

The Bean (also known as Cloud Gate), located in Millennium Park, is Chicago’s most iconic sculpture, regularly drawing crowds to take a picture of its reflective surface. The park itself offers a vibrant urban space spanning 24.5 acres. It's also linked via pedestrian bridge to Maggie Daley Park, which boasts a rock wall, mini golf, scooter rentals, playground, beautiful gardens and more kid-friendly fun.

2. CLIMB THE WILLIS TOWER

This notable spot, formerly the Sears Tower, is known for its Skydeck. Located on the 103rd floor, it offers stunning panoramic views and history exhibits. If you dare, step onto The Ledge, an observation deck with a glass floor (the highest one in the U.S.!). While you're there, play the ultimate game of “I Spy” — there’s even a printable scavenger hunt for kids available on the Willis Tower website.

TAKE AN ARCHITECTURE BOAT TOUR

Several architecture boat tours run through the city, showcasing skyscrapers, landmarks and Chicago’s rich history. Even if you aren’t an architecture buff, this tour is fun for the whole family with silly (but smart) narrators and snacks and drinks on board. Plus, you can’t beat a scenic ride through the Chicago River.

GO WILD AT THE LINCOLN PARK ZOO

Not only is Lincoln Park Zoo free to the public, but it’s one of the oldest zoos in the country. With over 200 different species, fan favorites include the gorillas, polar bears and the newly renovated Lion House. Children can also take a ride on the Endangered Species Carousel and the Lionel Train Adventure.

5. ENJOY A BEACH DAY AT LAKE MICHIGAN

Yes, a city beach is a thing! With several to choose from, like Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach, kids will love taking a swim in Lake Michigan. Chilly water not your thing? Walk or bike along the Lake Michigan lakefront trail that has plenty of playgrounds and grassy parks along the way.

Our family has visited Chicago for years, and we're still discovering new attractions and experiences. From parks that feel like Chicago’s front yard to the cool waters of Lake Michigan to the innovative museums, delicious food and bustling city streets, Chicago holds a special place in our hearts and memories.

6. GO MUSEUM HOPPING

If the family is up for a culture-filled afternoon, head to the Museum Campus. These picturesque 57 acres are home to the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and Soldier Field. Dino lovers will especially be in awe of SUE, the world’s largest Tyrannosaurs rex, who lives at the Field Museum.

7. CHILL OUT IN THE MUSEUM OF ICE CREAM

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Enjoy sampling fun flavors as you walk through an interactive history of ice cream. Have your camera ready because this spot has all the Instagrammable shots, from the sprinkle pit to giant ice cream cones.

HIT UP NAVY PIER

While Navy Pier is definitely bustling with tourists, it’s a muststop for Chicago first-timers. Ride the 200-foot Ferris wheel with unparalleled skyline views, take a spin on the swings, visit Chicago’s Children’s Museum, dare to ride an iconic speed boat, catch a show at the historic Shakespeare Theater or shop till you drop. Time your visit to enjoy the fireworks show on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer at 9:30 p.m.

WANDER WRIGLEYVILLE

Even if you aren’t going to a Cubs game (which you definitely should!), hit up Wrigleyville. It's teeming with restaurants, shops and street performers. If it’s game day, head to Gallagher Way, which is right next to the stadium, to check out a live broadcast, music, visits with Clark the Cub and more. The venue frequently hosts kid-centric events like movie nights, golf days and concerts.

TRY DEEP DISH

One meal you don’t want to miss: deep-dish pizza! This Chicagostyle pie is a thick pizza baked in a pan and layered with cheese and other toppings. My favorite joint is Lou Malnati’s because Lou is known as the father of deep-dish. Keep in mind: Deep-dish pizza takes about 45 minutes to bake, so plan accordingly.

1. KENSINGTON PALACE

The palace is magnificent and boasts just the right amount of royal history, personal family pictures, and crowned jewels — you’ll even get to see the rooms where Queen Victoria was born and raised. After the tour, check out the palace gardens, which include the sunken gardens where you can see a statue of Diana, Princess of Wales. To keep the kids engaged, head next door to the Princess Diana Memorial Playground. It’s said that it’s a tribute to the princess who loved the innocence of childhood.

2. THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Nothing symbolizes the monarchy more than Buckingham Palace. Even if you skip the guided tour, plan to watch the changing of the guard. The grand tradition is filled with pomp and circumstance as soldiers prepare to march to Buckingham Palace to relieve the soldiers on duty. Arrive at least an hour early to walk around the Royal Mews (stables, carriage house and garage belonging to the Royal Family) before enjoying the ceremony.

3. WESTMINSTER ABBEY

This was my favorite experience in all of London. Westminster Abbey has hosted numerous significant historical events. Over 3,000 famous people, including kings, queens, noblemen, writers, musicians and politicians, are buried here. A special family trail guide is available to help you explore the abbey with your little ones. Afterward, your little explorer will receive a badge as you exit. Other activities include catching a choir performance, lighting a candle for a loved one and looking for exotic animal carvings.

For our first overseas adventure with kids, we jetted to the United Kingdom to discover a love for London, the British accent and all things adventurous! Aside from learning how to pack in just a carry-on for two weeks, we quickly learned how to make “the square mile” (London’s nickname based on its modest size) the highlight of our trip.

4. DOUBLE-DECKER BUS

5. TALES OF TOWER OF LONDON

While the Beefeaters and their historical uniforms make for a memorable photo opp, they’re also known for their lively stories about this iconic castle that served as a palace, a fortress and a prison. Make sure to keep an eye out for the nine ravens, known as the “Guardians of the Castle.” No visit is complete without a stop at the White Tower, the oldest spot on the property, to see the royal armory and play interactive games the kids will love.

6. THE CROWN JEWELS

Once you’re finished with the Tower of London, head on over to the Crown Jewels. Your entire family — especially any princess enthusiasts — will be in awe of the royal objects worn by royalty during coronation ceremonies. This includes the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, the Sovereign’s Orb and the Coronation Spoon. Where else will you get to see the largest colorless cut diamond in the world?

To browse the latest coronation collection of keepsake gifts and experience an 18th century department store, head to Fortnum & Mason. Located in Piccadilly, it's known for its old-time charm, extraordinary hampers (food gift baskets), delicious foods and fine tea leaves. You can visit the London Transport Museum, book a show at one of the 40 theaters or schedule a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired afternoon tea.

This was by far the highlight of our trip (and I’ll admit I was not expecting it!). You’ll see firsthand how the Harry Potter films were brought to life. Browse original sets, props and costumes while you walk through the Great Hall, Forbidden Forest, Daigon Alley, Platform 9 ¾ and more — all with a butterbeer in hand, of course. Get a photo taken in front of a green screen as you fly on a broomstick over London.

10. AUTHENTIC INDIAN FOOD

Dishoom, a Bombay-inspired restaurant, will draw you in with the mouthwatering smells of authentic dishes bursting with exotic spices and flavors. With a few locations in London, it’s easy to grab a reservation for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Kids can order from the main menu or the children’s menu (our favorite includes pancakes topped with sweet yoghurt, fresh berries, coconut flakes and syrup!). Our family enjoyed several small plates for dinner and finished the evening with cinnamon ice cream.

Take a clear kayak ride down one of the many beautiful natural springs or intracoastal waterways we have in Central Florida. Get Up and Go Kayaking offers tours at local watering holes like Rainbow Springs and Silver Springs.

Grab a dive log at the SeaLife Aquarium so kids can track their underwater adventures. Stamp the book at the nine dive stations around the aquarium to receive an Ocean Ambassador medal at the end of the visit.

Customize your own chocolate bar at Chocolate Kingdom. After a sweet tour through this unique chocolate factory, guests get to choose from a bunch of ingredients to make their own candy bar. Bacon, caramel or M&Ms, anyone?

Unlike typical cycling, mountain biking takes place on exciting off-road trails and dirt tracks equipped with wooden or natural obstacles. With the right introduction and safety equipment, even young kids can experience adventure on Central Florida’s mountain biking trails.

Meet SORBA

SORBA, the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, is the name to know in the mountain biking community. The local branch maintains and improves several trails throughout the state and in Central Florida. Their website offers tons of helpful information on trails, riding techniques and community events. sorba.org

Located in the northeast corner of downtown Orlando, Lake Druid is great for introductory riders and enthusiasts alike. The practice course has wood platforms, a pump section, a dirt track with jumps and natural obstacles. The nearby single-track bike loop is 1 mile long and offers a mix of natural obstacles, wooden features, and even an advanced section for more technical riders. The track can be completed in about 15 minutes if you don’t stop to view the beautiful scenery, and it ends with large wooden features with several drop-offs and a wall ride. This is a great little park that can keep you and your family busy for hours. Plus, you can’t beat the convenient paved parking and drinking fountains.

This multi-use trail system in Lake Mary is an expansive park with 11 miles of trails, including loops, straightaways and obstacles. They recently partnered with SORBA to build a Mountain Bike Park Skills Area. The new section is located where the Seminole Wekiva Trail (a paved pathway) meets the mountain biking trail, making it an exciting place to bring cyclists together. The Skills Area includes two banked berms, many natural obstacles, skinny platforms, several bridged obstacles and plenty of shaded coverage. Additionally, there are public restrooms, a bike-washing area and even a free tool station if you need to make some adjustments. It’s a great place to introduce a new rider to off-road biking or for the seasoned enthusiast to warm up before running one of the longer, more technical trails.

Located in the Little Big Econ State Forest, this single-track trail with beautiful vistas offers more challenging terrain and several distance options. Be sure to check the weather advisory and trail status before arriving; heavy rains can flood the trail, making sections impassable. This trail is best suited for more experienced riders who are ready to take on variable terrain and face longer distances in a more remote setting. If you are up for it, you can also attempt the 10-mile River Trail Loop, which is an exciting excursion that can take 3 hours to complete. Remember to pack accordingly and always be sure to ride safely.
