From the moment our daughter was born, we’ve made sure to surround her with music — from the upbeat playlist my husband blasted in the delivery room to our weekly Musikgarten classes. Now that she’s a little older, one of Jackie’s favorite things to do is see live music. As long as there’s a good beat, she’ll be front and center, trying to join the band.

With the fall season underway, we rounded up cool things to do around town, from visiting the Orange County Regional History Center (page 18) to checking out festivities like pumpkin patches and Halloween parties (page 32).
We also captured the faces of some of Central Florida's cutest kids at our fashion shoot with Simply Shelby and Tugboat & the Bird (page 22). We loved shooting these young ones at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came out for the open casting call.
Speaking of photo shoots, local photographer Shelby Finkelstein shares her tips for nailing family holiday photos (page 28). As a parent, you know that as soon as Halloween is behind us, it’s a mad dash to the end of the year, so plan ahead and get the annual family portraits checked off your holiday to-do list.

Francesca Tarantino (age 14) has had a love for classic rock since an early age. While her peers may have been tuning into Radio Disney or Top 40, she was jamming to the likes of Aerosmith and Deep Purple. “Music has always been a big part of my life,” she explains. “My parents would always play [classic rock] around the house, and I’d be screaming along the lyrics.” For her first-ever performance, she closed out a school talent show in second grade with Rock and Roll All Nite by KISS.
Fast-forward to today, and the Windermere Prep ninth grader is still performing, but this time at local venues across town. While it seems like a natural evolution, her success so far has been thanks to hard work and dedication. Francesca chatted with PLAYGROUND about her musical journey and what she’s learned along the way:

PLAYGROUND: Obviously, you’ve always loved music, but performing in front of a crowd is a huge next step. What made you decide to take your passion public?
Francesca: When I started musical theater in fourth grade, it gave me the confidence to start performing onstage. I was also working with a voice coach at the time since for a while I was hesitant to let anyone — even my parents — hear me sing. Once I felt more comfortable, I had my first audition, and I was cast in my school production of Beauty and the Beast and even served as Belle’s understudy. From there, I began continuing to perform at school productions along with local community theaters.
Not long after, my dad began teaching me guitar. As I learned, I began to be able to play songs I actually listened to, which made me fall even more in love with it. Eventually, I realized that singing with a guitar was what I wanted to do instead.
PLAYGROUND: What influences your sound today?
Francesca: Mainly rock ... classic rock, punk rock, pop rock, anything like that. I’ve performed a few times with a band, so those performances have a rocker feel. Then other times, my sets are pared down with more of an acoustic vibe. I always close with KISS’s Rock and Roll All Nite, and I’ve recently been very into singing Kansas’s Dust in the Wind since it’s such a beautiful song.
PLAYGROUND: Tell me about your songwriting. Where do you find your inspiration?
Francesca: I always wrote little sentences and phrases or thoughts and struggles down to one day be lyrics when I was younger. When I started working with Dreamwalker Music Evolution, a music artist development and production company in Orlando, they began to help me write all the originals I have today. My songs right now are about real-life scenarios, stories and people from a 14-year-old perspective. I’m planning to release my debut called My Runaway by the end of the year.
PLAYGROUND: Performing in front of a crowd must be nervewracking. What do you do to prepare ahead of time?
Francesca: Pre-show, I always do a vocal warm-up to make sure I’m ready. Any song I perform, I always practice a lot beforehand. It’s also crucial that I choose ones that I truly like to sing because if I don’t really enjoy them, it won’t be as authentic.
PLAYGROUND: Where around town do you perform, and is there one gig that really stands out?
Francesca: I’ve performed at the Winter Garden Fall Festival and at Daytona’s Rock Bottom Brewery, and planning on hitting up a lot of other local open mics this fall. I’ve also gotten the opportunity to sing the national anthem at a number of high school sporting events and even the Miami Marlins game. However, one of my most memorable shows was when I got to open for country artist Jordan Moore at Tin Roof Orlando on International Drive. I played a 30-minute set. It was actually my first time playing alone, but once I got onstage, it was really fun.
PLAYGROUND: Ultimately, whose career would you like to emulate?
Francesca: My dream is for more and more people to hear my music. Hopefully, throughout the country one day and maybe even worldwide. In terms of people whose career I admire, I first look to Paul Stanley, the lead singer from KISS. I think it’s so cool he was born without an ear, and he didn’t let it stop him. I was also recently inspired by seeing the movie Elvis. I had no idea about his childhood, what got him started, and I was very surprised to learn how nervous he got before performing.
PLAYGROUND: What advice do you have for other aspiring musicians?
Francesca: There are two things. Number one, don’t worry about what other people are going to think of you even though I know it’s easier said than done. I struggled with it a lot, but it’s something you need to overcome when you’re performing. The second thing is to have fun. If you’re doing something and you’re not enjoying it, then it’s not something you should be doing.
Studies have shown that exposing kids to live music performances can help with concentration and learning, socialization and even empathy. But getting little ones to sit through an entire concert can be challenging. That’s why restaurants with live music can be a good alternative: Adding food to the mix gives kids something else to do (fill up on fries) when the novelty of the music wears off. Plus, nobody’s expecting you to stay for the whole show, so when the kiddos have had their fill of both the food and the tunes, you can just pay up, get up and go!

Words by Chris KarelCountry is king at this ICON Park honky-tonk inspired by Blake Shelton. The restaurant and live music venue features a constant line-up of artists from 11 a.m. to closing every day of the week. Shelton fans will get a kick out of menu items named for some of the country star’s most popular songs, like the “Some Beach Fish Sandwich” and the “Boys ‘Round Here Po’ Boy Platter.” Little ones will find their own greatest hits on the kids’ menu. Make sure you save some room for the Lucky Charms mud pie!
Another ICON Park favorite, Tin Roof Orlando serves as a launching pad for local acts. Bands that do well here might be added to the chain’s national roster. In 2019, Tin Roof Orlando added the Green Room, an adjacent space to the main dining area. Now families coming for Sunday brunch can choose between two musical sets: a reggae duo might be playing on the main stage while a DJ spins party beats in the Green Room. While Tin Roof normally hosts performances seven days a week, it’s a good idea to double-check their schedule before you go.
This downtown Sanford mainstay has been Central Florida’s epicenter of traditional German music, culture and cuisine for over 20 years. While there’s a musical act on tap every Monday through Thursday at 6 p.m., the stars of the show are Jimmy and Eckhard, a duo that’s been entertaining guests at Hollerbach’s since 2006. These polka pros perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings as well as in the afternoons on the weekend. And if watching men in leather shorts rock out on a squeezebox makes you hungry, Hollerbach’s menu is full of authentic dishes that are arguably the best German food in the U.S.
Ole RedA sweeping revival is underway.
This Edgewood eatery is locally owned, and it shows. The staff is genuinely friendly, the food is fresh and delicious, and the décor is whimsical. Vanbarry’s features live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6–10 p.m. and on Sundays from 12–3 p.m. Acts range from Stevie Wonder-inspired R&B to rock and pop classics. The stage is located off to one side, so parents have the option of sitting on the opposite side of the dining room to protect little ears or sitting right next to the stage to drown out sibling squabbles. You can also grab a seat on the spacious patio and let the tunes wash over you through two big roll-up doors. If the food and music aren’t enough to keep the kiddos busy, there’s an impressive pile of board games you can play at your table. PLAY Tip: For a great day out, pair lunch or dinner here with a stop at Cypress Grove Park around the corner. Both the restaurant and park are Central Florida gems that deserve to be discovered.

The holiday season always seems to sneak up on us, so it never hurts to plan ahead, especially when it comes to holiday cards.
To avoid frantically searching through your phone’s camera reel on December 1, go ahead and treat yourself by booking a professional photographer. Not only will a pro bring a creative eye and approach to your pictures, but they’ll also produce a higher quality end result.
Here are my tips for ensuring your family portrait session is totally stress-free:
Tell everyone about the photo shoot well ahead of time and explain what to expect. Let them know how much you’re looking forward to it and why your family is doing it. If you’re excited, they’ll definitely catch your enthusiasm.
When it comes to selecting a location for the photo shoot, choose a place that you love or that represents your family. The backdrop sets the stage for the entire session and will determine the overall vibe of the pictures.
Now that the dog days of summer are behind us, the fall is an ideal time to go outside. If it’s too hot, you might all feel sweaty and uncomfortable, and if it’s too cold, your kids might complain (and their frustration will show through in the photos). In terms of time of day, a good rule of thumb for outdoor sessions is two hours after sunrise or two hours before sunset since the natural lighting is ideal. Also, make sure everyone is well rested and well fed beforehand to avoid any crankiness.
Once your location is set, it’s important to think about key logistics like: Are there restrooms? What’s the parking situation like? Are there places to change outfits and retouch hair and makeup? The more you plan in advance, the smoother the day will go. Also, make sure to bring extra diapers, spare clothes, snacks and water just in case!
Whether it’s letting kids suggest their favorite places around town or having them weigh in on the colors the family should wear, the more you can include them in the planning process, the better. When kids feel involved, they’ll be more willing to participate.
Deciding what to wear is always one of the biggest stressors, but it doesn’t have to be. First, make sure everyone chooses something they feel comfortable in. Factor in the location because the look and colors of your surroundings will impact the overall aesthetic. Ideally, you want to reflect the background but not match it so much that you blend in.
Matching outfits can look a little dated. Opt for the family to look coordinated but not like clones. Stick to a color palette of one or two colors and lay everything out beforehand to ensure the pieces complement each other visually. It’s important to limit the number of patterns to avoid clashing. Steer away from large logos and graphic tees because they can be distracting.
Bring along a couple toys and plan an activity the whole family can enjoy together after the photo shoot as a reward. Also, parents, make sure you’re in the photos too! Your kids will love seeing your faces on the holiday card!

Rollins Museum of Art (RMA) provides a free membership program that introduces visitors ages 6–13 to a world full of art through creative missions inspired by pieces from the collection. Explorers collect prizes and stamps in their special members’ passport while expanding their imagination and art research skills. When participants sign-up for Art Explorers at RMA, they get a welcome letter, a passport, their photo taken with a Polaroid camera and their first mission! Missions are done at home using everyday objects and art materials. Once a mission is completed, Art Explorers return to RMA to show their project, get a stamp in their passport, receive the next mission and maybe even receive a prize!
