Editor's Note

“You’ll figure it out.” I must’ve heard that phrase 100 times when I was pregnant. Like most first-time moms, I wasn’t positive I would. But now, I get it. As soon as you hold that sweet baby in your arms, you realize caring for your infant is part instinct, part trial and error and part late-night Googling. However, some of the best advice I received came from other mamas. By guest editing the annual Baby Issue, I'm hoping to share what I've learned with other new moms in the PLAYGROUND family. When I first met PLAYGROUND’s publisher, Heather Reneau, I was four months pregnant at a media dinner. Clearly, it was before COVID-19 turned our lives upside down, because when was the last time you were at an event filled with a bunch of strangers? Needless to say, it’s been a weird year. It’s been even more challenging for parents who happened to have a baby during these past 12 months. Bringing a newborn into the world should be a joyous occasion, but new parents are plagued with worries that range from big ones like whether it’s safe for their babe to meet the grandparents to smaller ones like whether there are enough Wet Wipes in the world to clean the swing at the public playground. Motherhood, especially during the first few weeks, can be isolating enough. Throw a deadly virus in the mix, and all those emotions are amplified. If you’re reading this, stuck at home with a fussy infant or a big pregnant belly, know that you’re not alone. I feel you. I wrote about my own experience in What to Expect When You’re Expecting (in a Pandemic!) on page 18, so we can commiserate together. I also felt it was necessary to fill the pages with topics that make the newborn stage a little more bearable — from a round-up of places where you can safely interact with other moms and babies (page 26) to registry staples designed to simplify your life (page 12). Most of all, what I learned when putting together this issue is that community — whether virtual or socially distanced — is what will get us through this trying time. After all, if we can birth a baby, we can handle anything, right? PLAYfully yours,

Money Matters FAIRWINDS Credit Union and MicheLee Puppets have created Raising Money Wise Kids, a financial literacy video series. Words by Jen Bisbee

In the Saving Spending Sharing Budget video, a puppet named Jay learns from his mom how to divide his money into categories and create a budget for how to save, spend and share.

F

or most parents today, the common expression “money doesn’t grow on trees” was likely the extent of their financial literacy education when they were growing up. In fact, a recent survey by CreditsCard.com found that one in four adults with children under age 18 said their parents provided no money lessons as a child. However, financial literacy is one of the most important life skills a child can learn. From saving up allowances and controlling impulsive buying to finding ways to make money through chores, knowing the fundamentals of money and how to use it wisely is critical to a child’s financial successes in the future. The good news is that it’s never too early to start. A study by the University of Cambridge found that money habits in children are formed by the time they’re 7 years old. April is National Financial Literacy Month, and this initiative was created to raise awareness about the need for effective financial education. Throughout the month, organizations across the country are launching initiatives designed to improve financial literacy, especially among our nation’s youth. In Central Florida, FAIRWINDS Credit Union and MicheLee Puppets have partnered on a financial literacy project entitled Raising Money Wise Kids that features a series of fun, educational videos to teach children how to make smart money choices that will lead to a life of financial freedom and generosity. Available to parents and teachers nationwide, the topics include:

• I Want it Now teaches kids to control impulse buying and how to set goals and save money. • Saving, Spending, Sharing Budget shows children how to divide their money into categories and create a budget. • Time, Talent, Treasure: Living Generously explains how to make a difference in the world by sharing their gifts with others. • Welcome to the Credit Union takes kids on a whimsical trip through a credit union to discover how it can help them with their money and financial goals. Each of the lessons is a presented as a fun music video that follows puppet kids on an adventure that requires them to make choices about how to use their money. It’s an entertaining resource to help kids learn and remember. Funded by the FAIRWINDS Foundation (the philanthropic arm of FAIRWINDS Credit Union), the entire series will be available for free on PBS LearningMedia and YouTube. PLAY Tip: The Raising Money Wise Kids free video series is supported by lesson plans that teachers can incorporate into their curriculum. It’s important to set a strong financial foundation by teaching children the importance of setting financial goals, planning effectively to help them to stay on course and preparing for detours that come along the way. To download the family guide and find more helpful information about how to chart a course to financial freedom, visit fairwinds. org/foundation.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING (IN A PANDEMIC!) Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin

Am I having a boy or a girl? Is baby on track growthBumping Along Through Quarantine wise? What color should I paint the nursery? Wait, Since I typically work from home, my day-to-day life wasn’t too was that a kick or indigestion? As soon as you receive disrupted when the lockdown began in March, and overall, being a positive pregnancy test, it’s next to impossible to pregnant during quarantine was a fairly ideal situation. First off, I shut out the endless stream of questions running didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything — no parties or dinners where I was stuck wishing I was (a) having a glass of wine or (b) through your head — and if you’re a first-time home with my feet up — and I didn’t feel bad making Nate stay mom, that uncertainty is tenfold. When I found home to watch Netflix (again) with me. Plus, with nothing to do, I out I was expecting in November 2019, I was equal had plenty of “nesting” time. All the organization tasks I hoped to accomplish were more doable than ever, but I did find it annoying parts ecstatic and anxious, wondering how on earth that I couldn’t shop in person. And on top of that, everything online I was going to grow a tiny human being inside of was back-ordered. Note to expecting mamas: The earlier you can order things, the better! me, nonetheless bring it into this world. Thankfully, my first trimester was uneventful. Baby was getting glowing reviews during her check-ups while I was enjoying daily naps and extra helpings of carbs. My husband, Nate, and I decided to stay hush-hush about our growing family until the end of January, so when it came time for the big reveal, we couldn’t wait to tell people in person. However, soon after we began to share the good news, there was another story popping up around town — a little one about a respiratory disease named COVID-19. Like others, I didn’t think too much of it at first, but as the toilet paper aisle at Publix began to look sparse and you couldn’t find hand sanitizer to save your life, I began to realize that maybe this whole coronavirus thing wasn’t going away anytime soon. Still, I kept telling myself: It’ll just be a few weird weeks. I never thought my baby girl would be born into a world where a pandemic was still raging. Needless to say, that notion didn’t age well.

As the weeks went by and my baby grew from the size of a walnut to a pear, I started to realize how weird it was that no one had seen my burgeoning bump. When I first found out I was expecting, I was excited to become that cute pregnant person in my barre class or out and about shopping. Unfortunately, with self-isolation, there was none of that, including zero need for maternity clothes (which maybe was a blessing?). By the time I decided my tummy was big enough to warrant a social media announcement, it had been months since I had gotten properly dressed. When I finally put on a real outfit that didn’t include leggings, it made me realize just how sad I was that I couldn’t show off my changing body. And let’s be serious, that sought-after pregnancy glow doesn’t translate nearly as well over Zoom or an Instagram post. There was also a big, looming question mark surrounding my baby shower. Originally scheduled for May with an alternate date in June,

18 PLAYGROUND Apr / May 2021

there was a period of time when I wasn’t sure if the celebration would even happen. As a first-time mom, I always imagined having a shower, and while petty, it was hard to wrap my head around the idea of not having one. Questions like Is it safe? or Will people think I’m selfish? were just a smattering of my concerns. By the time the backup date rolled around, things in Florida appeared to be improving. Ultimately, I decided to go ahead with it, but the entire shower was moved outdoors with boxed lunches, tables 6 feet apart and a station packed with gloves, masks and hand sanitizer. Who needs party favors when you have PPE?

Both my parents and in-laws were first-time grandparents, so it was devastating not being able to share their precious granddaughter with them immediately. I had always imagined my mom and dad in the waiting room with Nate running out to let them know she had been born. Instead, pictures and FaceTime had to suffice. Months later, I still feel sad that they missed out on that huge part of the birth, but I do feel grateful that they were able to meet my daughter soon after she was born. I have a few friends whose parents still have not met their grandbaby due to the fear of traveling, which must be so disappointing for them.

While a few guests understandably declined, I ended up having a lovely celebration. However, even after having a safe and socially distant shower, I still had a COVID-19 cloud hanging over me. I was so terrified that I’d hear about someone getting sick because of me or that I’d end up being guilty of hosting a super-spreader event. Unfortunately, that was just the tip of my anxiety iceberg.

Both sets of grandparents met my daughter when we arrived home, but everyone wore a mask when holding the baby. Our baby mask mandate lasted for about two months for immediate family, but it’s still in effect for anyone else who wants to hold sweet Jackie. I can only imagine what her little brain must think with everyone’s face partially covered up!

As my due date got closer, I began obsessing about what would happen if my husband or I had COVID-19 when I checked into the hospital. I couldn’t shake how horrible it must be to deliver alone, and the mere thought of giving birth solo sent me into a tailspin. Without fail, I asked about Winnie Palmer’s guest policy at every single appointment, confirming again and again that Nate would be allowed in the room with me. It didn’t make me feel any better that partners were banned from most OB appointments. While I felt thankful that Nate was by my side for the exciting doctor’s visits like the “you’re officially pregnant” sonogram and the anatomy scan, my heart broke for the first-time moms who weren’t able to share those special moments with their significant other.

Masks were just the beginning. It was a bizarre feeling to finally admit to myself that my first go at motherhood would be anything but normal. Even simple things like going to Target had me questioning whether it was safe. Beyond practical concerns, new moms have taken a hit socially too. Support groups and classes for new moms have been few and far between, so finding camaraderie has been infinitely harder than it would normally be. Even some of our good friends haven’t met our daughter yet, but that’s just the unfortunate reality we’re living in.

It’s a Girl! At the recommendation of my doctor, I ended up scheduling an induction. Not only was it daunting to know that on July 1, I would be leaving my house with a pregnant belly for the last time, but it was also nerve-wracking that I had two weeks to remain COVID-19free. I couldn’t stop stressing that I’d somehow test positive despite going into full-blown quarantine mode. Even the slightest headache or symptom sent me into a downward spiral, and if you’ve ever been pregnant, you know just how many weird symptoms you experience daily. When the day finally came, I crossed all my fingers that our selfisolating had paid off. Luckily, it did. I was negative, so my nightmare of being in the COVID-19 ward was off the table. While I’ll spare the details of the actual delivery, it was so strange bringing a baby into a pandemic-ravaged world. During my stay at Winnie Palmer, every time a nurse came into my room, there was a mask-on policy. I also learned that if I can labor with a mask, it’s not too much to ask others to wear one at the grocery store. But the hardest part wasn’t wearing a mask; it was not being able to have visitors.

The Upside While arguably there’s never been a more stressful time to have a baby, there have been a few benefits. The biggest one? Quality time with dad. In a COVID-19-free world, my husband would’ve only been at home with Jackie and me for two weeks; instead, he was at home with us for close to five months. In those first few weeks — the ones where life is a total blur of feedings, diapers and sleepless nights — he was able to really be present, not just to help me, but to watch his daughter grow up daily. For that, I feel eternally grateful. Another aspect is that COVID-19 has taken the pressure off. Without our usual bustling calendar of commitments, I don’t have to choose between booking a sitter or hanging out with my little munchkin. Trust me, while sometimes I wish I could be traveling again or attending parties, the anxiety of leaving her at home is nonexistent. We’re just living in Newborn Land, and you know what? That’s OK. Everyone says you’ll miss the baby stage, so that’s what I keep telling myself. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll long for these endless nights stuck at home and covered in spit-up. Either way, Jackie is going to have a lot to read about in her baby book when she grows up — and when it’s finally safe to throw a party, she’s going to have one heck of a sip and see.

After a few scrolling sessions, it became obvious that there was a common feel to all the images she was pinning. “I realized I wanted something light and bright with lots of natural elements like wicker, rattan and greenery incorporated,” she explains. Once she had this relaxed vibe in mind, she honed her vision by making mood boards of items and décor she liked.

CHOOSE AN ANCHOR PIECE The one must-have was a cozy leather chair, and Megan designed the rest of the room around that element. COVID-19 forced her to do all her shopping online, so she turned to Etsy, Wayfair, Overstock and Facebook Marketplace. Her secret to seeing what pieces complemented each other? Taking screenshots of the items and using a layout app on her phone to create collages. “It’s a simple way to see how everything looked together,” Megan says. Before long, she began to fill the room with décor that she loved, from bigger things like a white crib and a wicker elephant end table to smaller details like a vintage plant hanger.

DON’T GO OVERBOARD Even though the last time Megan decorated a nursery was over 10 years ago, she still remembered the main lesson she learned from it: Avoid boxing yourself in with one very specific theme. “I wish I hadn’t gone all-out with Winnie the Pooh,” she says. “It gets boring very quickly, and you get over it. Plus, you don’t even know if your kid is going to like it.” Instead, she recommends keeping a theme to a few elements and investing in pieces that can grow with your child.

MEGAN'S NURSERY NECESSITIES • A VERSATILE DRESSER Instead of buying a changing table you may never use again, put a basket or pad on top of a dresser. Just make sure to put grip pads (like ones used for area rugs) underneath to avoid slippage. For added flair, switch out the drawer knobs. • A COZY RUG Ask any parent — mobile babies and hard floors don’t get along. Invest in a soft accent rug that will prevent bumps and bruises. • PORTABLE DIAPER STATION Place all your changing essentials like diapers,

wipes, and rash cream in a basket that you can easily move around the house. • A LAMP Set the mood before naptime and bedtime with ambient lighting that’s dim enough to calm your baby but bright enough to read in. • CUTE STORAGE Keep clutter and toys to a minimum with practical yet pretty shelves or bins. • A CONVERTIBLE CRIB While the toddler bed days may seem far away, be prepared by investing in a crib that can change with your little one’s needs. 20 PLAYGROUND Apr / May 2021

Gone Forgotten BUT NOT

I

Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin

t’s estimated that 22,000 parents per year experience the unimaginable — the loss of their child. The CDC defines infant mortality as “the death of an infant before his or her first birthday.” Sadly, 5.8 deaths occur per every 1,000 births, and affected families often struggle to navigate the soul-crushing grief that follows. Thanks to Noelle Moore, now there’s help for these families. When her 23-day-old daughter, Finley, died in 2013, Noelle found it extraordinarily difficult to find

support. The native Winter Parker knew she never wanted another grieving parent to experience that same feeling of isolation, so she started The Finley Project. Not only is the organization an ode to her daughter, but it’s also a helping hand to anyone coping with the loss of their beloved baby. Because this grief is often not talked about, PLAYGROUND felt it was important to address infant mortality by speaking with Noelle about The Finley Project’s critical mission.

LOVE PLAYGROUND: First, tell us what led to you starting The Finley Project?

PLAYGROUND: If you know someone who has experienced a loss, what’s the best thing to say?

Noelle: After we took Finley off life support, we were forced to walk out of the hospital without our child. That now what? moment eventually paved the way for The Finley Project. The Finley Project isn’t just nice to have; it’s essentially something that is saving a mom’s life. I knew I needed help and that I needed it right away, so I immediately started asking people where I could find it. What I found was that there were few resources available. During this time, I couldn’t think straight, and I was feeling something I never felt before, which was intense grief and depression — I was even suicidal.

Noelle: It’s more about what to do than say. The best thing to do is to be patient since this is a lifelong journey that doesn’t ever go away. I would recommend following up or sending a note once a month for five years. Just put it on your calendar to check in. Make sure to include their child’s name and ask if they’re doing okay or missing him or her, even if it’s years later. I have a friend who sends me a “thinking of you” text on the 25th of every month, which is the day Finley was born.

However, when dealing with all of this trauma, I learned that it boiled down to choices. I saw a fork in the road: I personally had a choice to either end my life or somehow make meaning out of why Finley died. Obviously, we know what I chose. Not only could I not shake the injustice of her death, but also the injustice of there not being support for people like me, so that’s what fueled me and kept me alive. I’ve always been wired as an advocate, and I’ve always seen wrongs and wanted to make them right, so The Finley Project became my way to encourage change.

PLAYGROUND: Tell me about the organization’s holistic approach to healing?

I also think it’s important to understand that grief never truly ends. It’s a big misconception that there’s a start and an end, but there is no other side to get to. It’s a process where you have to learn to live with yourself. I don’t believe it’s cyclical either. Grief is more like fireworks. One day you’ll be fine, and then the next day something can trigger you and bring back that exact pain from years ago. There’s a lot of shame with grief, and people feel like they shouldn’t still feel this way, but that’s not the case. It’s always with you.

PLAYGROUND: Is there anything you shouldn’t say?

Noelle: If you don’t know what to say, sometimes saying you don’t know is better than silence. However, don’t tell someone that “God has a plan” or “There’ll To learn more about be a blessing on the other side of this” because The Finley Project, visit when people are in their darkest pain, they don’t thefinleyproject.org. want to hear that.

Noelle: For the actual program, it took me a year to investigate what else was out there. What I learned was that you needed more than just counseling and that it was important to care Be on the lookout for Noelle’s PLAYGROUND: How has COVID-19 affected for the whole person while also providing them upcoming book to be grieving mothers? with long-term help. We’re the only organization released later this year. in the entire country where it’s a holistic process. On top of it,

PLAYGROUND: Why do you think there’s such a stigma regarding talking about the loss of a child, and what can we do to change it? Noelle: It’s the greatest tragedy in life. You’re expected to lose a parent as they get older, but not a child. If it does happen, however, you often become the elephant in the room because people don’t know what to do with you — there’s no answer, there’s no cure, there’s no going back — so I think that’s why there’s a stigma. People don’t know how to make these parents feel better. As a mother who has lost a child, I’ve found the best thing you can do is address the issue head-on and say the name of my child to honor her. Simply mentioning her makes people less uncomfortable with the silence, and as long as you bring her name to light, it sends a signal to others that they can talk about her too.

these families never got to have funerals. The need for healing is huge, but thankfully we are still operating and providing plenty of telehealth support.

PLAYGROUND: What advice do you have for anyone who is currently going through the loss of their child? Noelle: Let their child’s life be their purpose in continuing on. When they’re having hard days or don’t want to keep going, remember that they can honor their child by living and experiencing life again. Although things will never be the same, you can find joy in life again. There’s also nothing more beautiful than watching a mom be an example and beacon of hope by sharing her story with others. Supporting another mom going through this tragedy is the ultimate tribute to your child. Whether it’s through an organization like The Finley Project or another volunteer opportunity, walking this journey together is an amazing way to make both people heal.

DIY: Sensory Delights DON’T BUY, D.I.Y. THESE CREATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS Whether you’re running out of ways to play with your kids or can't stand listening to Cocomelon for the hundredth time, look no further than these activities designed to tap into your little one’s senses.

Joy Clore Willis, owner of A Kids Gym in Oviedo, came up with these clever D.I.Y. ideas (all of which are fashioned out of common household items) to engage and entertain. Happy crafting!

Water Bottle Shakers Step One: Fill clear water bottles with different sensory items like sand, rocks, sequins, glitter or an oil and water mixture. The best items make sounds or visually change when shaken. Step Two: Screw on the cap tightly. Use hot glue to secure if needed. Why Kids Love It: Not only does it teach them about sounds and weight, but you can also play games with the bottles. Try hiding them under a blanket, go to a different part of the room and shake them so your toddler can find them by the noise, place behind their ears and torso so they can turn towards the sound, or roll the bottles along the ground so they can crawl after them.

Tube & Ball Roll Step One: Collect various sizes of “tubes” from around the house. Examples include paper towels, toilet paper, mailing tube, carpet roll, wrapping paper and PVC. Step Two: Find different items that can be pushed through, like balls, toys or pieces of fruit. Step Three: Encourage your child to roll these objects through the tubes. Why Kids Love It: They’ll get a kick out of watching items come out the opposite end. Plus, it’s a good problem-solving lesson because they’ll have to determine what size spheres will fit inside. Ways to play include having tube races to see which objects roll through faster, standing up the tubes up like bowling pins and trying to knock them down, and talking and making different noises through them to see how it changes the sound.

Sensory Ziploc Bags Step One: Fill a Ziploc bag with and oil and water mixture and some glitter, blue hair gel or shaving cream with a few drops of food coloring. Step Two: Tape the first bag shut and place it inside another Ziploc. Step Three: Secure it to a table or highchair tray with tape. Why Kids Love It: Little fingers will love squishing and moving the contents of the bag around to see the how the different colors and textures interact. Add to the fun by placing a picture, printed letters or name under bag for a hide and seek activity.

A Kids Gym Learning Academy offers a positive learning environment for children ages 6 weeks and up. Classes are led by an experienced staff of educators. Your little learner will grow in an environment that is suited to their needs. A Kids Gym Learning Academy also offers a physical education curriculum that introduces children to gymnastics and dance and teaches them the core skills needed for basic ball handling, skipping, jumping, kicking and more! Check out the preschool gymnastics and motor development classes that focus on developing hand/eye coordination, body awareness, listening skills, motor development, and physical fitness in a fun and safe environment. A variety of options are offered Monday through Friday. 28 PLAYGROUND Apr / May 2021

Meet Literati Party: The local event planning company that’s here to make first birthdays (and beyond) picture-perfect. Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin Photo by Michael Matthews

You did it! You raised a tiny human for 12 whole months, so now it’s time to celebrate. The one caveat? There’s a pandemic still raging, so the party may look a little different than you imagined. We talked with Andrea St. Onge, the creator of Literati Party, about all the things you should keep in mind while planning your little one’s fête. You can still make the celebration magical, no matter if it’s socially distanced or virtual. PLAYGROUND: First, tell us about Literati Party. Andrea: We’re a children’s birthday party planner and online shop featuring quality party supplies and books. Literati Party was created by combining my experience and passion for party planning with my love for books. I believe in celebrating life’s most important chapters and think books make great gifts. My services also include custom party boxes shipped nationwide, local balloon décor installation and complete birthday party planning and styling. For custom events, I always create one-of-a-kind party designs that infuse my clients’ ideas with my creativity. I personally curate the party items and handcraft most of the balloon designs and detailed décor. PLAYGROUND: Why do books make for such a great party theme, and what are some easy ways to incorporate them into the décor? Andrea: Children’s picture book parties are my favorite kind of party! There is so much you can use from what is on the pages, and sometimes you can even use the pages themselves! Starting with the invitation, set the tone by incorporating the characters in the design, even abstractly. From there, mimic the book’s setting in your venue. For example, if you’re inspired by a barnyard tale, have the event at a farm, or if it’s a mermaid storyline, make it a pool party. The illustrations can inspire the color scheme. Create a backdrop behind the dessert table or try using the actual pages as décor by framing them or making them into a banner. Other fun options include having the guests or birthday child dress in character, serving any food or drink mentioned in the story and giving the book as a party favor.

PLAYGROUND: How has COVID-19 changed party planning dynamics? Andrea: Overall, there is definitely more of a reliance on virtual communication throughout the planning process, from Zoom meetings to phone calls and emails. Plus, you may only see pictures of the party space prior to the setup. There are extra precautions for safety as well, like wearing gloves and masks when assembling items, setting up or breaking down. Plus, there’s a more directed attempt to making everything individualized for the party, especially when it comes to food: cupcakes vs. cake, wrapped treats, boxed lunch items, and even the activities and favors in order to be considerate to all invited. PLAYGROUND: It also must be a challenge to figure out how to celebrate — virtually or socially distanced. What are some factors you should keep in mind when deciding between the two? Andrea: I think it all boils down to what you and your family are most comfortable with. However, it’s important to realize that whichever you chose, there is still going to be planning, coordination and cost involved to make it a true party. The benefits of a virtual soirée are that you don’t have to worry about the health and safety of guests, friends and family from all over the country can attend, and best of all, no major cleanup or expense. On the other hand, it requires planning in advance, and tech issues could hinder the party from going according to plan. You also need to manage the flow of the event and prevent others from talking over one another. That’s why some people, especially those experiencing Zoom fatigue, may opt for a socially distanced party instead. This route allows you the freedom to go all-out in terms of décor and food, and there are so many more activity and entertainment options, especially if it’s outdoors. It’s just important to keep in mind the safety of everyone by paying special attention to the handling of items like food and encouraging mask-wearing if you deem it necessary.

Looking for something beyond the pages of your child’s favorite book? Check out these clever themes that will wow your guests — no matter if they’re attending virtually or staying 6 feet apart. CAMPING PARTY: Pitch a tent in the backyard for a day or night filled with outdoorsy activities that can include everything from trivia to crafts to a scavenger hunt. Give campers personalized s’mores kits or badges for completing different activities. DIY PARTY: Whether it’s an arts and crafts, painting or baking project, a DIY theme is a fun way to get together virtually or in-person. Come up with the activity yourself or use YouTube for inspiration — just make sure everyone has the right materials to get the creative juices flowing! SCAVENGER HUNT: While it may take some coordination, plan an epic outdoor quest. Create clues, hide objects, and send guests on a journey they won’t forget. OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT: Rent or set up a projector and screen (a white sheet works too!) to show your fave flick. Theme the event around the film or do a “drive-in“ and have everyone seated in their own cardboard car that you can craft ahead of time. EPIC WATER GUN FIGHT: Build an outdoor arena with many obstacles to hide behind and assign a mission to complete. Provide water guns or have guests bring their own. Pro tip: give attendees a white shirt and dye the water so you can tell who got hit!

GAME NIGHT: Everyone loves some friendly competition, even if it’s digital. Games like Pictionary, Scattergories, Heads Up, Bingo and Minute to Win It all translate well virtually. You can also download apps with built-in games. Personalize the celebration by delivering Game Night boxes ahead of time with game supplies, snacks, sweets or even something goofy for attendees to wear. SLUMBER PARTY: Now that it feels like we’re all living in PJs, show them off by hosting a virtual sleepover. Send goodie bags filled with popcorn and candy, then have everyone tune into Netflix Party, where you can stream the same show or movie while messaging in the chat box. SPECIAL ENTERTAINER: Feel like seeing a little magic? How about petting some zoo animals? Want to meet your favorite Disney character? A hired entertainer can be your guest of honor, whether they’re performing for guests on a screen or at a distance. Want to learn more about Literati Party? Get Your Preschooler Excited for Day Camp Words by Cheryl Maguire

“Who’s excited about camp?” I asked enthusiastically. My twin toddlers looked up at me with a perplexed expression on their faces. They had no idea what I was talking about, but since they were already signed up and would be discovering what I meant soon enough, I wanted to make sure that I communicated just how fun their camp experience would be. If you’re in a similar boat, it’s normal for your preschooler to be wary of the unknown. Here are a few ways I got my kids revved up about their first day. Trust me, by the time you’re through these seven steps, they’ll be jumping up and down in excitement:

• Go to the Library Head to the library with your aspiring camper to check out videos and picture books regarding the topic. You can also look on YouTube for camp videos or songs. The idea behind this is to build anticipation and help them to understand what to expect — the more enthusiasm you can drum up, the better. Also, tell them stories about your own camp experiences.

• Hit the Stores

• Go Swimming

With the camp list in hand, we went to the local mall and shopped for the items. They loved picking out their favorite towel, bathing suit and sunglasses. I even let them buy a new backpack just for camp. Not only is it fun to shop around with your kiddos along Park Avenue or down at the Mall at Millenia, it also gives you the opportunity to discuss the different activities they will participate in at camp like swimming and sports.

Most camps offer swimming lessons or a free swim period for campers. It’s important to take your child in the pool beforehand to discuss safety and reinforce that swimming is fun. For novice swimmers, consider enrolling them at Goldfish Swim School to get them acquainted with the water. Some kids may fear getting in, especially if there are a lot of people splashing around. By taking your child swimming before camp starts, you will ease some of these anxieties and make them feel more confident in a pool setting.

• Learning About Friendship Next time you’re playing board games together like Candyland, talk to your children about things like taking turns and how to start up conservations with new kids. Pose questions like, “What are some things you can talk about with kids your age?” or ask them, “What are some ways to make new friends?” Also, in the days leading up to camp, read books or watch movies about friendship.

• Schedule a Visit Most camps offer an open house or orientation to help your child understand what their days will be like. This is a perfect time for children to ask questions and meet counselors or other campers. If possible, set up a play date with some of the other kids who are attending the camp. Drop-off will be easier if your kids recognize some familiar faces.

• Play Camp Games

• Create a Countdown

Introduce common camp games at home to get your children excited and prepared. Plan a scavenger hunt with camp items like a backpack or sunglasses or set up a mini Olympics with various challenges like relay races or tug-of-war. End the day on a sweet note with some s’mores.

My kids love countdowns for holidays like Christmas and vacations, so why not do one for camp too? Create a countdown calendar or use an app. If you’re really feeling creative, make construction paper chain links for the number of days until camp starts, tearing one off every day. By the time they rip the last link, they’ll be running out the door for their first day.
