COVER STORY

The Ageless Writer Leo Tolstoy Text by Pria Marking the 193rd birth anniversary of the iconic Russian writer Leo Tolstoy’s birthday on September 9, 2021, we at Storizen thought to commemorate his writing, style, thoughts, and contribution to world literature. Leo Tolstoy was born at his family’s estate, Yasnaya Polyana, in the Tula Province of Russia on September 9, 1828 writer. He was the youngest of four boys. Tolstoy lost his mother in 1830, his father, Count Nikolay Tolstoy’s cousin, took care of the children. Seven years later, after his father died, his aunt was appointed their legal guardian. Tolstoy and his siblings moved in with a second aunt in Kazan, Russia, when the aunt passed away. Tolstoy experienced a lot of loss at an early age, which profoundly affected his writing. Tolstoy received his primary education at home, at the hands of French and German tutors. In 1843, he enrolled in an Oriental languages SEPTEMBER 2021

program at the University of Kazan, but unfortunately, he failed. He never received good grades and thus was registered to a law program. Lavish life and partying attitude made him leave the University of Kazan in 1847 without a degree. He returned to his parent’s estate, where he started farming. Eventually, he failed at farming too. However, his interest in keeping a journal is marked as the initial steps to his fiction writing.

COVER STORY

Leo Tolstoy is considered one of the greatest authors of all time. He wrote an autobiographical story called Childhood while he was a beater in the Army, in which he wrote all of his fondest childhood memories. After this, he started writing about his dayto-day life at the Army outpost in the Caucasus. However, The Cossacks were never completed until 1862. Tolstoy managed to write during the Crimean War too. He composed Boyhood, a sequel to childhood in 1854, which became a trilogy of his autobiography. In between the war times, his other writings focused mainly on soldiers’ consciousness, which is considered a new writing technique. At the end of the war, he left the Army and went back to Russia. His writings and articles have attracted some thought schools with which he refused to collaborate with. He left for Paris in 1857, gambled all the money he had, and returned to Russia in 1862. This return journey is the start of a new life. He published a 12 issue of a journal named Yasnaya Polyana and married Sofya Andreyevna Bers. In the 1870s, Tolstoy experienced a moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as a profound work on spiritual awakening in his non-fiction work. 10

STORIZEN MAGAZINE

Tolstoy always sought to attain truth through art. In his conception, art is the great unmasker; as he wrote in his diary on May 17, 1896, “Art is a microscope which the artist aims at the mysteries of his soul and which reveals these mysteries common to all.” Living in Yasnaya Polyana, his birthplace with his wife and children, Tolstoy spent time on his first great novel, War and Peace. A portion of the novel was first published in the Russian Messenger in 1865, “The Year 1805.” By 1868, he had released three more chapters, and a year later, the novel was complete. The book was a hit with both critics and the public. The novel had historical accounts of the Napoleonic Wars. This book is also famous for its realistic characterisation of fictional characters. The novel also uniquely incorporated three long essays satirising the laws of history.

SEPTEMBER 2021

COVER STORY

His other work, among others, Anna Karenina is a famous novel. This is a deep story based on social transgression, love, betrayal, duty and children. The story ends with a dramatically tragic end which also has the elements of exile and adultery. The story made critics talk rampantly about the character of Count Vronsky and Anna’s affair with him.

SEPTEMBER 2021

Many critical studies have been made and are still made in today’s generation on Tolstoy’s works. In his book Sevastopol Sketches, written in 1855, he mentions the inside account of experience in the Crimean War. The book indicates his stand, which strengthens his belief in commenting that the course of the war is quite illogical without strategies. This has been repeated in War and Peace too. His other works like A Confession and The Kingdom of God is within you have been subjected to further discussions. These books, somewhere, reinforces Tolstoy’s belief that governments are immoral and serve only the rich. Though his works faced severe criticism, his other book, The Confessions, received rampant reviews as the book is based on human urgency or rushing idea to know the infinite. STORIZEN MAGAZINE

COVER STORY

Tolstoy's writing is also known for the problematic situations and their portrayal in a simple manner. This makes the reader relatable. During the time of his stay in Russia and the various revolutions happening around, his novels depict the then situations aptly. There is a collective opinion among the readers worldwide that his books are heavy to read, not only in terms of story but the number of pages! Picking up this book is considered a Herculean Task in a subtly humorous manner. Leo Tolstoy has inspired humungous amounts of people. Tolstoy established himself as a moral and religious leader. His ideas about nonviolent resistance to evil influenced the likes of social leader Mahatma Gandhi. In the same lines, though his work is criticized but mostly applauded by contemporaries, including Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

In the last days, the pilgrimage Tolstoy decided to have proved too arduous for the aging novelist. In November 1910, the stationmaster of a train depot in Astapovo, Russia, opened his home to Tolstoy, allowing the ailing writer to rest.

Tolstoy died there shortly after, on November 20, 1910. He was buried at the family estate, Yasnaya Polyana, in Tula Province, where Tolstoy had lost so many loved ones yet had managed to build such fond and lasting memories of his childhood. The novel is set up around 50 AD, where an Indian princess has to marry an older man for the sake of saving the kingdoms. The story is about her determination to find a place in the world, in history, and not to settle for a life in shadows along with the pursuit of fulfillment of purpose, choice, and sexual desire. Also, the characters are very strong in nature. The story also contains a lot of drama and has the element of historical fiction. The book focuses on the life of Princess Padmakishori and how she has zero control over her life, thanks to the patriarchal nature of society. The story begins with the preparations of Padma’s ‘Swayamvar’ where she doesn’t have the freedom to choose her husband as it is a facade for culminating the pre-planned alliance for the sake of her father’s kingdom and his rule. This book highlights all the struggles that Padmakishori faced being a female. That probably most women had to face. If we look into Padma’s character sketched by the Author then we find it that she is a strong, inspiring woman. At times insecure with hidden braveness. The Padma has many sides to her that all add to her personality. The book also shows that how the royalty had to face difficulties in securing the kingdom and how was the life of princesses and queens in the palaces in those days. The plot is truly incredible with a melancholy vibe! SEPTEMBER 2021

The rest of the book unravels how she deals with her life post her marriage. The book also sheds light on how women of lower stature were treated and also the general attitude of people towards women. The book ends on a suspenseful note, indicating a sequel in near future. BOOK REVIEW

Since the pandemic times have allowed writers, authors, and reading enthusiasts to explore and weave various stories that emerge out of the situations where life came to a standstill are enjoyable to read. In this connection, books by many authors have been published, and it’s a beautiful thing most of the books are welcomed by amateur and seasoned readers. But again, taking time to write and present the stories on such situations with incidents happening around that affect the psyche of any human is a challenge. On a personal front, I salute every writer and author for this! Being an avid reader and reading across many genres often leaves me confused about picking up a book mainly meant for children or young readers. But all said, there lies the magic of imagination while reading children’s literature, and mostly if it is a fantasy adventure, there are no bounds!

In this book, Roy discusses and explains the lives of often neglected rag pickers living and who work in the dump yards in the Deonar landfill of Mumbai. The book talks about Farzana, a rag picker who comes from a family of rag pickers. Author Roy describes the difficulties, hardships, and emotions between each of them and their families beautifully. Not every day do they deal only with plastic or dampen waste but also corpses and dead bodies. There are trigger warnings in the review, but some gruesome incidents are presented in the book as this is a work of non-fiction. BOOK REVIEW

Udbhav Agarwal’s A FOR PRAYAGRAJ: A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF ALLAHABAD is a memoir collecting experiences that the author had while conversing with locals and comparing it with how he remembers the city. These conversations happen on one of the important points as the changes the city has been seeing. Here, the narrator corelates his memories with the town before leaving to another place many years ago. The urbanization that has been happening for some years in the country in a way has totally changed the fabric of the country’s own flavor, be it in terms of looks and feel or food habits. The once known villages, towns, 2-tier and 3-tier cities have undergone a drastic change. The upholding and the businesses in and around the places are almost similar to the urban cities. The ever happening changes somewhere in the minds and hearts of the people do make an impact, probably in an unhappy manner. This can be felt by an older adult or a person who has lived in a place for a long time.

About the Book In this book, debut writer Udbhav gives an account of the then city Allahabad and now Prayagaraj! A for Prayagraj brings forth the city through a memory ride. It all talks about the past glory and how it’s now and what are the changes the city has gone through. It also talks about whether people will stay or go away. How were the people, and how are they now. The prologue is interesting as it talks about the present times.

STORIZEN REVIEW

BOOK REVIEW

Reality is the most dangerous thing in life. Facing reality with utmost energy and willpower showcases the courage and strength of a person. In this book by author Mridula Bajpai and as the blurb suggests, the book is her untiring fight against cancer she was diagnosed with. In the book, The author has described her struggle and fight with the disease very honestly. From the moment she was felt uneasy till the last radiotherapy sessions, her travel was inspiring. Though she had family and friends as support, she - herself being positive, ever self-motivating, and a definite focus on facing the dread is endearing to read. Before the treatment, the detailed explanation of her apprehension, feelings, confusion, and worry is heartening to read. But the moment she started accepting the reality though worrying sometimes and questioning the destiny -’ Why me? ‘, her insight towards the future filled with hope is definitely inspiring.

STORIZEN REVIEW

A Handful of Purple Sky traverses the journey called life when it brings you to a crossroad, and you can only take one quick decision: to fight, fight and fight till you emerge victoriously. Before I forget, I would like to thank the publisher Amaryllis and author Mridula Bajpai for mentioning my review for her previous book - Until you come home that was published in December 2019 edition of the Storizen Magazine in the 10th chapter of this book, A Handful of Purple Sky - My Second Chance at Life. Life and Death by Sumantra Chaudhury

It is not the end she said smilingly… But rather the start you waited for… Of a journey that you had dreamed of… Or the infinity that you deeply adore. A slight shift it is into another room… Not very different from where you were… The light is same…and so is the fragrance… Only time has decided to slightly defer. But be not worried, for you are the same… Dazed and lost a little by the travel. For it might have been a bit hasty… Pardon me for this trouble. This is but an eternal bond… One that is but a holy communion Together we weave an endless tale… Of separation, hope and union

Flutters of Orange and Black by Sangita Kalarickal

Summer is but a flitting thought On the wings of a hummingbird, Winter is the six-month truth. Long. But for now Among stolen moments of the weather Delicate butterflies create a tornado Of wishes and wannabes The Monarch visits to dance Before the flowers wither And foliage says their weak goodbyes. Winter is the six-month truth. Long. But certainty Of crocuses and snowdrops linger As the harbingers of spring Slumber deep Within the white bosom of the earth A cycle repeats In the twilight zone Dandelion dreams always Haunt.

Deja Vu by Madhumathi H The sands of time I step upon Feels familiar, and strange alternatively Am I on my first journey, never traveled before Are more stations waiting, and more trains for transport?! A sudden entry from the cosmic As an atom, of the fathomless Yet nostalgia engulfs my soul Completely oblivious of the apparent Oh, dear Deja vu! Of whom, are you? Reminiscence flashing like an over speeding car Not even a glimpse of the rear wheel Not mine, or all mine? clarity jumbled up Birth and death a cycle, rebirths a cleansing?! Will my entry and exit be clothed, in 'just born' memories? Ah! the chocolate showers upon my entry And the threatening whips of steel thorns The Karma baggage, and consequences While longing to shed my everything for that Oneness Oh, the Supreme Ruler of the Universe! Why can't the cycle begin, and end just here This carryover Math is a huge problem Never chain us with remainders Aware of the tiny molecule I am, in all humility Am questioning you dear Omniscient, "why take stress?!" Just reward, and punish then and there, before we exit Create anew! afresh! redemptions can take a break My knowings are less, but my thirst is unquenchable So are my quests, sometimes dragging me to strife With my own self, that includes the inseparable you Longing to see you rewrite the pages of destiny

STORIZEN POETRY

Pardon me, dear Omniscient! but am custom-made in your factory Wired inside with primordial questions Every 'Whys' I come up with sighs, tears, and anger Are my conflicts within my universe, without a referee Just when the storm paves the way to calmness I find myself amid an ocean of answers But what were my flurried questions, and where are they now? Why do I need the answers, when the search has forgotten the cause... The giant bell rings aloud I hold tight my blanket, dreading the bitter pills Shut my mind, and shun the strife, for Am too tired to hear the truths I already know Whether my first journey, added coaches, or my last train And, the sands of time I step upon a mixture I sieve the tenses to retain this present In moments I shall live, sow my desires Let whatever that sprouts, be my tiny precious garden Staying away from the oracles of the morrows Burdening memories of yesterdays All I want to know, is am now, am here, LIVING.

A Soliloquy Between Two Vaccinations by Mamta Joshi Universal in its diversity Life was a montage An array of pictures Of births, marriages, rituals, festive feasting The see-saw of comfort and panic Emparadised we navigated life Flirting with flesh, fortune, and freedom To feel powerful, secure, and cocky Life happened before the virus put a full stop. Death is the new normal Seductive in its organic wholeness A realm notches above Higher than our daily concerns Nothing to be added Nothing to be subtracted Its velvety darkness ends all equations.

Corona has dragged death down Into the sphere of everyday life We are more familiar With the erosion of life Our expiry date clearly inscribed A short shelf life clipped shorter Consumed and possessed Death hastens the killing spree Converting breathless mortals into data We live enclosed and hampered Paintings in their frames No longer fluid and free. Like the Japanese tea party ritual Elaborate and symbolic Ichigo, Ichie One chance, one meeting Of fleeting joys and transient encounters Life ends as an epitaph in stone Cosmic joys and sorrows Dance in the orange-red sparks of the funeral pyre.
