COVER STORY

n the vibrant streets of Bangalore, Anita Nair spins a narrative that mirrors the intricacies of 21st-century society. Renowned for her Inspector Gowda series, Nair takes readers on a riveting journey through the city's bustling landscapes, unraveling crimes intertwined with political intrigue, land disputes, and broader societal issues. In this exclusive interview, Nair shares insights into her creative process, the genesis of her flawed yet relatable protagonist, and the meticulous research that lends authenticity to her crime fiction. NAVIGATING SOCIETAL COMPLEXITIES At the core of Nair's recent novel, "Hot Stage," is a political murder that unfurls a web of motives involving prominent citizens in Bangalore. Nair asserts that the Gowda series transcends traditional crime narratives, offering a reflection of the evolving city. "With 'Hot Stage,' I intended to use political murder and the land mafia angle as red herrings to lead to the real crime," she reveals. This storytelling technique allows her to weave in social commentary, delving into issues such as corruption, power, bribery, and environmental concerns, offering readers a profound exploration of the human condition. FLAWED PROTAGONIST: A GLIMPSE INTO THE HUMAN PSYCHE Assistant Commissioner of Police Borei Gowda, the flawed and relatable protagonist of the series, plays a pivotal role in Nair's exploration of the darker aspects of the human psyche. She highlights the necessity for a perspective capable of delving into the twisted strands of darkness within the human mind. "A well-adjusted character will not be able to understand the complexities of criminal thinking," she notes. The JANUARY 2024

contradiction of a flawed man working on the right side of the law adds layers to the narrative, making it both intriguing and challenging. POLICE PROCEDURAL DYNAMICS AND TEAM BUILDING Unlike conventional crime novels with private detectives, Nair chose to spotlight law enforcement. The decision was not deliberate but a consequence of her initial imagery—an image of a man in a police uniform on a motorbike. Extensive research into law enforcement procedures was imperative, leading to the formation of a core team for ACP Borei Gowda over the three books. Nair believes that the best investigative teams are formed by individuals who have worked together and understand how to bring out the best in each other. DECODING TITLES AND SIGNIFICANCE OF "HOT STAGE" The titles of Nair's novels often feature law enforcement terms less known to the general public. "Hot Stage," in particular, refers to a forensic technique used in evaluating glass particles found at a crime scene. Nair finds the term rich with possibilities, reflecting the evidence leading to the scene of the crime, the breakthrough in the investigation, and the figurative hot stage where the crime occurs. BALANCING SOCIETAL ISSUES WITHIN THE NARRATIVE In "Hot Stage," Nair skillfully balances various societal issues such as corruption, power, bribery, and environmental concerns. Crime fiction, she argues, is uniquely positioned to depict the consequences of these issues on individuals and society. Through the lens of crime, Nair offers readers a reflection on contemporary society, urging them to STORIZEN MAGAZINE

contemplate the impact of corruption, power dynamics, and human greed. RELIGION AND RATIONAL VIEWPOINTS IN CRIME FICTION Nair incorporates liberal and rational viewpoints, particularly on religion, within her crime fiction. In the current sociopolitical climate, where religion has become a divisive political tool, Nair sees it as her responsibility to depict this reality. In "Hot Stage," she seamlessly integrates religious angles into the plot, using it as a tool to further explore societal divisions.

AUTHENTICITY IN POLICE PROCEDURAL TECHNIQUES The meticulous portrayal of police procedural techniques in "Hot Stage" required extensive research and firsthand experiences. Nair spent countless hours visiting police stations, speaking to officers from different ranks, and immersing herself in the details of crime investigations. The result is a narrative that authentically captures the nuances of law enforcement and forensic processes. CRAFTING PACING IN CRIME THRILLERS Maintaining reader engagement throughout a crime thriller is no small feat. Nair emphasizes the importance of meticulous planning and clarity of thought. A good crime novel, she contends, needs to be taut and well-structured. For Nair, the key lies in hard work and a deep understanding of the nature of the crime and its impact on the narrative. Advice for Budding Female Authors Known for her unique humanistic viewpoint and social consciousness, Nair has two pieces of advice for budding female authors: read extensively and widely, without being a JANUARY 2024

In Bangalore, the death of Professor Mudgood, a vocal critic of right-wing forces, raises suspicions for ACP Borei Gowda, who believes it's a homicide. Despite the political motives initially suggested, Gowda's investigation reveals a secret, lawless world. "Hot Stage" unfolds as a gripping police procedural and a penetrating exploration of urban vice, as Gowda takes calculated risks to expose the truth. Will he succeed, and what will be the cost?

COVER STORY NAIR'S FAVORITE READS OF 2023 "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver and "Victory City" by Salman Rushdie stand out as Nair's favorite reads of 2023. She applauds both writers as master storytellers who continue to surprise her with every book. In conclusion, Anita Nair's Inspector Gowda series stands as a testament to her ability to intertwine crime fiction with social commentary, offering readers a thought-provoking exploration of contemporary societal issues. Through the lens of her flawed protagonist and meticulous storytelling, Nair invites readers to navigate the complex web of crime and society, challenging them to reflect on the world around them.

THE STUMBLING FEET IN THE DANCING SHOES by Ankur R. Gupta

Y

our Breakfast is cold again, and this is the second time I made tea for you, which remains untouched, grumbled Seema. Shyam was standing in a small garden, staring aimlessly at the untrimmed bushes of roses at one corner. Hmmm…did you say something, Seema? He asked vaguely, seeing her sullen face. Uh…nothing, she says, looking at his lost face. Is everything okay? she asked in concern as she had been noticing him for the last few months, brooding on something. Oh, ho, I‘m perfectly fine… can’t a man spend some time in peace, he said, with an irked expression. Fine... carry on with your peacetime, but someone is not as lucky as you. I’ve chores to finish. Seema remarked with a slight sarcasm and went inside the house, wondering why he was getting angry at the drop of a hat these days. Lucky??? Shyam mumbled, sighing heavily as his wife went away. I don’t know how to spend my day-to-day time, and you call me lucky. He laughed drily and slumped back on the garden chair. It’s been almost 12 years since Shyam had retired from his high-profile job. Reeling back in time, he remembers his retirement party. How happy and relaxed he felt. My chunk of life has gone slogging in work. Now, I will just chill out and wander the globe with my lovely wife. He heard himself saying to his colleague with champagne in his hand. Everyone cheered for him. But as time passed by, his wandering pan saturated, and the monotony of routine life with nothing much to do, began to make a denting impact on Shyam's once vibrant personality. Being an introvert, he always struggled to form JANUARY 2024

strong social connections and had no hobbies or interests outside his professional life. Retirement presented him with a void that he didn’t know how to fill. The void gradually transformed him into a grumpy man. Who yearned for a new purpose to look forward in life but was very reluctant to search for one as he felt too old to explore. Shyam, get ready fast. His chain of thoughts was abruptly cut short, by his wife's shrilling voice from the Kitchen. You still have to pack your suitcase. Remember, we have a flight to catch tomorrow to attend your childhood friend Girdhar’s housewarming celebration, at his new farmhouse. Now, hurry and get your hair done, groom yourself, and for God's sake, please pack some good clothes other than a worn-out pair of T-shirts and trousers. She grunted with distaste at his choice of clothes. Oh, yeah… I almost forgot… okay, and got up with enthusiasm. A feeling Shyam had not experienced for a long time. >>>>> I think it’s been almost seven years since we met, my dear friend, says Shyam cheerfully, looking at the immaculately dressed person with a stylish cut beard that enhanced his charismatic look. It's eight years, five months, and two days, to be precise, says Girdhar with a broad smile as he moved to hug his childhood buddy. The lines of aging were only physically visible on Girdhar’s face, with a few creases of wrinkles and greys. Otherwise, he still carried the aura of a graceful man with sparkling eyes. He and his wife, Geeta, greeted them with utmost warmth. As they entered the soberly but aesthetically decorated living room, Geetha called out, Guys! Chilled beers to beat the heat of Agra. Eh…sorry, Geetha, we quit drinking beer a few years back. We are a bit cautious with our age, says Shyam… A tea will be great. STORIZEN MAGAZINE

Really…. says Girdhar in surprise and looks at Seema, who gave him a wry smile and excused herself in the kitchen to help Geetha get some snacks. Come on, my dear friend, let’s cheers, for old time's sake, insisted Girdhar…nothing wrong with just one small peg. Ump…okay, but just one, agreed Shyam, but hesitantly. Cool! And here comes your favorite savory you relished with beer, commented Girdhar as Geetha and Seema entered with hot bhajis. All four friends sat together to catch up on the lost time. In the entire conversation, Shyam felt that he and Seema had nothing much to share. On the other hand, Girdhar and Geetha spoke at length about many things. Talking cheerfully, Girdhar and Geetha spoke about how they are busy following their newfound interests that keep changing with time. Shyam kept listening to them with intrigued expressions, wondering why this fun was missing from his life. Ohh, just recently, we had such a ball of a time learning to dance together, gushed Girdhar in excitement. What, a dance class…at this age? Cribbed, Shyam, out of the habit of bringing age in everything. But you always had flat feet when it came to dancing. Yes, I did. But then I shrugged off that reluctance as Geetha wanted us to do a ball dance on our 50th Marriage anniversary. Smiled Girdhar and winked at his loving wife. Believe me, Shyam, he is still perfectly imperfect when it comes to dancing, laughed Geetha. Yeah… but I’m trying to be better with the passing days to be part of your wish list, he says to his wife. Geetha nodded her head and gave her husband an appreciable look. 16

Seema sighed softly, listening to the loving couple. Oh, how much I miss such a warm-hearted conversation with Shyam. She whispered to herself and gazed at her husband, who was oblivious to what she was feeling and was busy grilling Girdhar with more questions. But isn’t it a bit of a risk? You might end up hurting yourself, questioned Shyam, with a perplexed expression. I’m aware that I am no longer in my 40s. So, always take a cautionary note of the physical limitations we all face in this age, spoke Girdhar. A cautionary note quizzed Shyam curiously. Hmmm …… like, to avoid injuries, I opted to learn slow-pace dancing, explained Girdhar, giving an example. Hmm…. but it’s not so easy to learn at this old age…rather feel ridiculous, reasoned out Shyam, trying to justify his idea of living in familiar comforts. He then spoke at length about how helpless and ineffectual he feels with the changing times, especially the technology. Eh… this digitalization maniac, with everything going online, is making life a mess…Ugh! Learning these platforms is such a task. Life was so much simpler before, and he kept cribbing non-stop. You know why I stopped stock trading, he cribbed again. Because I don’t trust agents to handle my finances, and I’m too old to learn these new apps and technology. So, I stopped looking into Stock markets. He grumbled as he tried to justify his reluctance to learn new things. But in reality, it was the fear of making mistakesand its repercussionsthat fueled his age-limitation excuses. Girdhar kept listening silently, feeling disappointed with the changes he was witnessing in his friend’s attitude. Why has he become so chicken-hearted? he muttered in an inaudible voice.

JANUARY 2024

Gazing further at Shyam's pot belly and oldfashioned clothes, he sighed heavily. I wonder what had happened to my friend, who used to go the extra mile to try new things and took good care of his appearance and health, he thought.

Don’t suppress your desires so tightly, my friend, says Girdhar, noticing his joyous face. Yeah…nodded Shyam. Come now, let’s have some beer, and then we can go for a long walk to burn down these calories, he stated happily.

But now Shyam seems averse to everything. >>>>> >>>>> Aha…great, clapped little Shanty in delight as Girdhar tactfully swirled the Kite high in the sky like a ship goes up and down on the crest of waves with a sailcloth. Yahoo… there it goes, shouted Girdhar as he entangled his kite with the neighbor’s and, in one shot, bought it down. The duo gave each other a big hi-fi and jumped joyously. Ohh, ho, Girdhar, here you’re jumping around like a child, and I have been looking for you everywhere, says Shyam, who huffed while climbing the staircases of the terrace. Shyam, my dear friend…Oh, my caretaker son just dragged me here. Why don’t you also join us for Kite flying? No thanks, he grumbled. My vision is not so agile, nor are my energies.

Why did you think of investing in a farmhouse at this point? Asked Shyam while walking with Girdhar, the next day. Hmmm…it was my wife’s long-lost dream to live in a farmhouse, and I did it for her. But was it a wise decision to invest so heavily? My dear friend, I had calculated all my numbers well and had secured my finances... This investment does not deter my future... …. At this point in life, where I am…. all that matters is, doing things that make me feel fulfilled and happy. Yes, perhaps you’re right, sighed Shyam. I lost precious years of my life after retirement in the indecisiveness of finding new purposes because I was reluctant to face the risks and fears attached to it. So, I guise my perplexities under the veil of aging.

Oh, come on, at least try, insisted Girdhar persistently and handed over the Kite to him.

Hmmm…days spent with you and Geetha here gave me a chance to introspect myself. I feel that my life is similar to a Kite…

Shyam, very reluctantly started to fly the Kite and grumbled when it fumbled down twice and almost gave up.

While aware of the limitation of being tied up in the threads of aging, I can still swirl it up in a direction I wish to.

Come on, try it again, coaxed Girdhar in an encouraging voice.

Girdhar smiled as he could now see, glimpses of old Shyam, whom he knew years back.

Okay, says Shyam in a listless tone.

He patted affectionately at his shoulder and said, my dear friend, it is never too late.

But as the Kite began to soar up, his stumbling feet started to dance with excitement.

>>>>>

Oh, God, I don’t know when was the last time, I laughed so much, gushed Shyam with child-like excitement after they concluded their flying session. JANUARY 2024

On his return from Agra, Shyam coaxed his wife to start her cookery classes on YouTube, which she always aspired to. He hired a digital marketing team to assist her. He also delved into the world of digital Stock market trading. He knew he always had a keen eye for spotting good investment opportunities. So, he decides to take a leap of faith in himself and explore the possibilities of digital trading. He started by attending local workshops and carefully writing instructions step-by-step, in his diary. Perhaps the only meaningful skill he retained from his active job days. His days were spent practicing all these steps by diligently looking into his handwritten instruction notebook and talking to a few people actively involved in digital trading. Finally, a few months later, one day, he made his first digital trading action in the stock market. He bought his first share through a mobile app. Ghosh! I did it. He clapped loudly as he saw the successful transaction blinking on his screen. He felt like he had won a battle. This is just the beginning, he murmured, making a promise to himself. >>>>> Months passed by, and sitting in his immaculately done garden, Shyam was engrossed in carefully analyzing his Stock portfolio in the Mobile. Seema was busy reading a newspaper while sipping her tea. Their eyes sparkled brightly, highlighting the radiance on their faces. Suddenly, she reads aloud a headline in the newspaper. In the village of Andhra Pradesh, a 90-year-old woman successfully passed her 12th examination. Shyam smiles at her and speaks. Add to this headline that trying and learning does not have any Age Tag attached.

Perhaps quoting his experience learned, the hard way that not trying is the first step towards failure. Correct, smiled Seema, enjoying the long-lost companionship of her husband. These days, Shyam has developed another new interest in committing himself to growing various Bonsai in their garden. And, for that, he has joined online gardening classes. Life has become so much simpler with digitalization, gushed Shyam happily.

ikram wakes up by a pounding at the front door. He wonders what the matter could be and who is bothering him so early in the morning. He opens the door to Sunil, a next-door neighbor, who starts uttering gibberish on seeing him, unable to speak coherently as he struggles to catch his breath—his pallid face turns crimson at the next moment with probably hurt or anger, Vikram can’t tell. It’s the harvest day for all the farmers and instead of being in the field, Sunil has come up to him to inform him about some mishap, natural sorrow, loss, or perhaps, some lastminute emergencies relating to the reaping. Vikram observes the pale, cold light of the early morning outside suffusing across the grey-white of the sky. Everything appears to be serene, and calm, except for the young soul at his door. “What’s the matter, Sunil?” Vikram enquires, bringing his face close to that of his neighbor, as a shudder of unease runs through him. “Come quickly. Our crops have been eaten… I mean damaged by the rats. Biku had gone home early in the morning, leaving the field unattended. It was then that the rats had done the mischief. One of them has been caught in the traps set for them.” Anil goes on breathlessly, with lips quivering and taut face muscles, spitting saliva on Vikram’s face due to the proximity of it. “What? My God!” Vikram almost stumbles on his doorsteps before he manages to sit down —unusually still with eyes fixed incredulously on Sunil. In a snapshot, the countless hours —spent in cold, rain, and sun, nurturing the crops, attending to their tedious necessities —appear before his eyes. Everything seems meaningless now, transformed into a void in a matter of minutes just because a tiny creature ventured into the farmland and devoured the fruit of his labor in no time, as if a love affair abruptly vanished in its entirety, eroded like it never existed. JANUARY 2024

“Will be there in a bit!” He resumes with great difficulty after a brief pause, accompanied by a peculiar expression of disgust and sudden disappointment, feeling nauseous. Anil clomps down the road. Vikram, oblivious of the news of all the trouble and lifeless like a wall, stares at the far, dull-white horizon visible between the gaps of the thicketformed by the moving shoots of his front garden. For a moment, he forgets the present earth beneath his feet that has momentarily shifted, leaving a fathomless bottom. He has been trying very hard to get a good harvest in the past. The last time it was the untimely rains and now, the rat menace. He bolts the door and trudges back inside. “What happened? You look so pale.” His wife, Malati, asks wide-eyed. “We managed to get a good harvest this time. The weather was conducive, but the rats…” Vikram felt several teardrops hanging from his eyes, and the tensed, pulsating vein on his temple. “It’s time that we follow our relatives to the city and take up some other job that will be much more rewarding. This farming business will drive us crazy. Our debts are also increasing day by day.” Malati exclaims, holding him in her gaze, and placing her hand on his shoulder. Vikram keeps quiet, unmoving, eyes closed as if cogitating over the recent catastrophe. He recalls the story of King Bruce of Scotland that his father would narrate to him when he was a child. Whenever Vikram accompanied his father to the field, he would tell this tale. King Bruce relentlessly fought to get back his lost kingdom but was defeated at every single attempt he made. Finally, being heartbroken, he decided to give up, and went into hiding. Inside a cave, he saw a spider, who in an endeavor to weave a web, slipped down over and over again as it kept struggling, but with persistent efforts, it finally succeeded in spinning its silken web. This motivated King Bruce to battle with renewed vigor against his enemies despite overwhelming odds and succeeded in reviving his kingdom. have attracted the rodents to his property. He, along with other farmers, has used pesticides and sealed rat holes with soil but all their efforts ceased to get any reprieve. From a distance, he could see their acts of devastation, as if the farmland had been hit by an invisible gale. Only a few hours ago, he had witnessed the golden ears of wheat swaying happily like ocean waves in the cool breeze. Now, the entire field has sunk into an ever worst state of dereliction, like one untended by negligent farm owners, forgotten stretches of land where wilderness has birthed and expired without any notice—chopped plants, irregular cuttings of stems, spots of depressions in the field, chewed ripening grains strewn here and there, tillers slashed near the base seen in patches, earheads slit and appearing, most probably, near their burrows. Approaching nearer to the field, he finds dark brown/black rat droppings in several places. He stifles an uncontrollable wish to cry, and, for a moment, mutely faces the desolate farmland, completely wiped out with grief, as dumb as a statue. After a while, as he plods his way toward the Panchayat office where Anil and other villagers have assembled, he feels careworn, ashy, eyes shrunk and as hot as a glowing ember with an emotional volcano constantly erupting inside him. Along with other villagers, he finds the Sarpanch presiding over the meeting as their immediate concern needs to be addressed.

the ongoing show. “No, no, no mercy…” Some of the villagers shout repeatedly. “Your wife says that you are planning to go to the city?” queries Sarpanch. “No, it’s just a passing thought. Neither I nor the rat are going anywhere.” Vikram says with conviction, eyes gleaming, ruling out the possibilities of negotiations and persuasions. “Just as I am doing my duty irrespective of the outside factors that are conspiring against ruining my harvest, the rat is also doing its dharma (way of life).” He continues sagely to reinforce his point, stroking his chin. “I don’t understand.” The Sarpanch peers at him through his thick glasses, stupefied. “As a farmer, my job is to continue growing food grains on my field. The whole country is waiting for the produce that will be transferred onto the shelves of markets. We can’t disappoint them by giving up. I have failed several times before while trying to provide for the people of my country. But I will keep on trying, whether I succeed or fail due to the factors that are not in my control.” Vikram turns around to leave. Everyone stares at him in absolute silence.

“Biku has to be punished for negligence, but before that, we have to decide what we’ll do with the rat who has wreaked havoc on our field, especially yours, Vikram.” The Sarpanch shifts his eyes on Vikram, measuring him from head to toe. Vikram notices a small cage kept at one side of the gathering. Inside it is an agitated brownish-black rat —raddled, eyes bulging, tip of its snout twitching, appearing more ruined than ruinous. He feels sorry for it. Biku is standing on one side, beside the cage, with his head lowered, constantly digging a hole in the ground with his toe. “We’ll kill the rat.” All villagers cry in unison. “I think we ought to show mercy…” Vikram says while clearing his throat, feeling a loss of interest in 22

His features hold in concentration, as he is drawn back to his early days of farming experience, his mind already engrossed in calculating the requisite steps for cultivating the next crop—what he believes to be—from the very beginning.

They are very closest buddies from childhood. James is a wanderer with an Enquirer mind whereas his friend David is just a Wanderer who enjoys beauty. Both were excited as they had never seen snow-clad mountains – as they were from tropical regions. Both have heard many things about the North from childhood. Though both James and David, have heard many fables about the North from their childhood, David always dreamt about going to the North to enjoy the beauty; whereas James always wanted to meet the wisest noblemen and saints of the North from childhood. This travel allowed them to enjoy their childhood dreams. Both explored the North to their fullest and went back to their home which is far south.

and Peace. After some time, once both James and David settled down, John started the conversation by asking both: John: I have been seeing you people for the past couple of months. Your faces are gleaming with Joy, Love, and peace after your far North Trip. Initially, we (including David) both thought that it must be because you came back home after a long time. But, now it’s more than a couple of months yet we can see you with the same kind of smile, energy, love and peace in your faces. You both were never like this before since I have known you people from childhood. What happened to you people in the north? How come you people can carry such a lovely thing along with you wherever you go? Kindly tell us the secret. Both James and David looked at each other smiled and James started the conversation

Their village people were so excited to see both James and David after a long time and they flocked towards them to hear about their Journey. Both were telling their travel/ exploration stories for some time and went to their respective homes. A couple of their childhood friends John and Mark came to meet both in their usual meeting place – near a stream. They saw that both of their friends (i.e. James' and David’s) faces were gleaming with love and Peace. Both John and Mark thought that it must be because they had come back to their hometown after a long time. So, they didn’t bother about it and just asked about their travel stories.

James: John, you’re right before we traveled to the North we were not like this. But, before we tell you what happened to us and what we have experienced in North, You tell me why you both are looking unhappy, upset and exhausted?

A couple of months passed by, then one evening, John and Mark were looking disturbed not happy with themselves as well as their lives.

David: I understand what you are going through; but, tell me one thing when was the last time you both spent time for yourselves?

James and David asked both (John and Mark) to meet them as they wanted to speak on something very important. Mark and John are sitting in their usual meeting place and were waiting for James and David to join them. After a few minutes, both James and David joined them - with their usual face gleaming with Love

Both Mark and John looked at each other and Mark asked

John: Yes, you’re right we are not happy with ourselves and our life. We try our best every day to carry ourselves better but, the day-to-day tasks at times become so heavier that we hardly feel better and able to carry ourselves enthusiastically. Also, our routines have become too boring. James and David Smiled at this and this time David spoke

Mark: What does it have to do with the question John asked David?

sorted out your differences and are now happy with it? That’s it?

John: Where is the time for us? We wake up, get refreshed, go to work and come back tired, have our dinner, spend some time with families by doing something like watching TV or Movies together etc.., and then go to sleep. Where is the time for us to be with ourselves?

James and David laughed at Mark’s statement, which annoyed both John and Mark, seeing that James continued

Hearing this James and David laughed and James continued James: Well, John it’s true. We all work like a machine and hardly find time for ourselves. This one thing which you said is true for many people around the world. But, now, answering your question, this is the one thing which I and David have found after traveling north. However, everyone doesn't have to do so and many may not be even able to afford for such a long Journey. David: We went through hard days while traveling to the North. But, we weren’t exhausted till we reached. It’s a very tough journey, but what we have learned from our journey and our experience from it, are what we wanted to share with all people in our village. We both have decided to part our wisdom starting from our childhood friends that is you both (pointing to John and Mark). James: John and Mark, being our childhood friends you people are very much aware that we both, that is me and David, have different interests, tastes and preferences. Yet, what we found in this journey is we both have wanted the same thing in life only in different ways. David: And that is pure Love, Joy/Happiness and Peace. My way is to always marvel at the beauty of nature and spend time with it; whereas James' way is to enquire about everything to know about it more scientifically and logically. James: I went to the North, in search of noblemen and saints to have their wisdom and knowledge. David: I went with an open mind to enjoy the beauty of the North. Mark: Oh come on, we both know this. What’s the point you people are trying to make or tell now? Is that you people are trying to say that you people 26

James: Oh no Mark, it’s not that our differences are settled. Have some patience to listen fully. What we know and understand now is that despite the differences what we were searching for is the same. As David said earlier it is pure love, Joy/Happiness and Peace. David: Once, we reached far North, James went in search of Nobleman and saints; while I started enjoying the beauty of life. I saw the beauty of Mother Nature and spent more time with nature and myself. James: And meanwhile I found some noblemen as well as met a saint with the help of those noblemen. I put through the questions whatever I had in mind, say about life, our day-to-day struggles, happiness, pleasure and pain etc.…, I put through all the questions and I got answers for most of the questions. For some questions, the saint said you need to find it yourselves by going deep within and you will get answers. That is where my real journey started to go within. David: As I was enjoying Mother Nature, and spending more time to myself, I also started my real journey to go within. Eventually, I and James met at a place where we knew that what we were looking for was one and the same. It is only the path that is very different. James is an Enquirer and that is his path. James: And David, is an enjoyer of beauty and man of complete surrender to the supreme – that is his path. But, what we have been searching for all these years is one and the same. David: Which we came to know after fighting with our folly ideas and having numerous useless arguments among each other. Now, coming back to you two – John what you said is true life is hard and many don’t find time to do what they want to do. But, tell me honestly, what is the purpose of living such a kind of life, where you JANUARY 2024

don’t find time for yourself or for the thing you wanted to do and are unable to do? James: Actually, let me add something more to it, many people are working like machines. Not even aware of where they are heading? Why they are running like anything? And also let me tell you another thing, actually, we all have enough time despite our busy schedules. But, what we do with that free time, is we watch movies, gossip with friends, scroll our mobile phones, etc… and hardly notice how many hours are wasted in those moments. David: Exactly. Hearing what James and David had said, John and Mark started pondering over it. There was complete silence for a few minutes. After that, Mark broke the silence Mark: You both are right. What is the use of such a kind of life where we can’t do what we want to do? Though we have time, we are not able to do what we want to do and we waste so many hours/time in vain. John: May be true. But, how many people have the luxury to do what they want to pursue? James: True, initially everyone may not have the luxury to pursue what they wanted to. The main reason is, actually, many don’t know exactly what they want in their life. David: Nature is always helpful to your pursuit, provided you’re clear about what you want in life and take the first step boldly. How many people have clarity of mind about what they want in life? Hardly, few. James: There are infinite possibilities in life, provided you are open to it. The first step in opening the door to those infinite possibilities is to accept and understand where you are and what you want in life. David: So, instead of being sober. Find out what you exactly want in life. Spend more time with yourselves and figure out what is the one thing which you love most and pursue it. JANUARY 2024

I wonder while people are racing for something or the other thing in life, they forget that it is Time which is racing against all humanity and we all will be defeated by it - either today or tomorrow. James: Exactly, life is short. So, don’t waste it. There was pin-drop silence prevailing and after some time the entire atmosphere was surrounded with pure love, Joy/Happiness and peace. Both John and Mark felt that there was something which had filled their hearts and they were in tears without words. After some time, they thanked their friends and all left the place. A few days/months passed James and David saw the change in John and Mark. Now, all four friends have achieved pure love, Joy/Happiness and peace. All four friends joined together and continued to share their experiences with all their village people. This transformed their entire village. Not only did their village prosper materialistically but now it is one of the happiest places in the world – as everybody knows what the purpose of their life is.

Interview

Sukanya Basu Mallik, Author, Durga: The Divine Warrior

When did you first realize your writing ability, and what led you to choose writing as a pursuit, especially given your background as an MBA professional? I discovered my passion for writing early in life, starting at the age of 8, with my work in print by the time I reached 7th grade. Despite being an artist at heart, I pursued an MBA because of my father's wishes. While I can provide logical reasons for choosing the degree, the ultimate decision was driven by my father's desire. Could you narrate the journey of 'Durga: The Divine Warrior'? What prompted you to choose Durga as the focal point, and how did the process unfold, including the research involved? 'Durga: The Divine Warrior' stems from my childhood connection with Durga as my favorite deity. Her blend of feminine charisma and fierceness intrigued me, leading to the idea of the Tridevi series. The journey involved studying Durga's avatars and maintaining narrative integrity while infusing freshness, opting for innovation through graphics. In delving into mythology, how does the exploration of such rich narratives make you feel, and how do you approach it? Exploring rich mythological narratives is both challenging and exciting. Working with age-old stories, I aim to keep the narrative intact while adding a fresh perspective. Unlike some authors in the genre, I chose not to alter the original storyline and instead introduced innovation through graphics in 'Durga.' Your writing is appreciated across various age groups for its elegance and presentation. What steps do you take to ensure your work resonates with a diverse readership? To resonate with a diverse readership, I invest in thorough research and pour my heart into the chosen subject, ensuring authenticity and appeal across different age groups. What elements do you believe render Indian mythological stories pertinent to modern readers?

JANUARY 2024

Indian mythological stories remain pertinent to modern readers due to their inherent creativity and the ability to immerse readers in a rich cultural tapestry. Our graphic novel attempts to infuse creativity and engagement successfully. With numerous books in the market sharing similar themes, what sets your book apart and makes it unique? What sets my book apart is that it belongs to the graphic novel genre in Indian mythology, offering a unique and less-explored form within this thematic space. The concept of Indian graphical novels is relatively uncommon, especially outside animated series like Amar Chitra Katha. What inspired you to venture into publishing a mythology-graphical novel? The scarcity of Indian graphical novels, particularly in the realm of mythology, inspired me to fill this gap. Identifying the lack of competition, I ventured into publishing a mythology-themed graphic novel. Can you share the research process you undertook before crafting the story? Take us through your journey in developing a mythologythemed graphical novel. Before crafting the story, I delved into the craft of writing graphic novels, studied mythological fictional books, and researched companies producing comics or graphic novels in India. Given the vastness and complexity of Indian mythology, are there specific topics you wish to explore in your future works? Can we expect your next book to be within this realm? The Tridevi series is a continuation of my exploration of Indian mythology. Following 'Durga,' the second book featuring goddess Saraswati is set to launch soon. What are your favorite books on Indian and Western mythology that have influenced your writing? While the Shiva Trilogy and Kevin's work have influenced my writing on Indian mythology, films have played a significant role in inspiring my creative endeavors. STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 31

In his latest book, Yanis Varoufakis boldly declares the demise of capitalism, a phenomenon he attributes ironically to the very force that gave it life – capital itself. Renowned as an economist and the former finance minister of Greece, Varoufakis fearlessly introduces provocative theories that challenge the status quo of both mainstream economists and Marxists alike. The book delves into the current global landscape, shaped by unprecedented financial collapses, disruptions in supply chains, and the ongoing COVID19 pandemic. Varoufakis contends that we find ourselves in uncharted territories, facing technological and economic challenges that even capitalists could not have foreseen. Varoufakis weaves a narrative of capitalism's decline through personal anecdotes, incorporating tales from pop culture and his progressive upbringing. The book introduces readers to the emerging paradigm of technofeudalism, asserting that we have transitioned from the depths of capitalism to a more insidious and exploitative system reminiscent of historical feudal societies. In this new economic order, ownership of capital is replaced by rent payments for access to cloud systems, trading platforms, and the Internet. Varoufakis argues that power now lies firmly in the hands of those who control information networks and data, fundamentally altering the dynamics of socioeconomic power. Technofeudalism is not just a dense economic thesis but a captivating and easily digestible exploration of our current reality. Varoufakis employs sharp insights and real-world examples, from the ecology of TikTok to the billionaire buyout of Twitter, to dissect the components of his argument. Overall, Technofeudalism is a well-written, relevant, and enjoyable read, with Varoufakis's theory poised to gain accuracy and significance with each passing year.

During times of crisis, people find themselves faced with lifestyle changes. One of the earliest and most noticeable changes seen during the COVID-19 lockdown was how we consume media — and especially how we read. Unsurprisingly, lockdown also made re-reading a physical necessity for some. Some respondents noted how they were unable to visit the library or browse at the bookshop for new books. Others reported that they simply wished to save money. On the other hand, the participants who reported re-reading less than normal during the lockdown period wanted to use their newfound time to seek out new topics and genres. Keeping this in mind, "The Vulnerables" by Sigrid Nunez unfolds a compelling narrative, chronicling the experiences of a writer thrust into the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nunez, known for her keen observations of everyday life, crafts a fascinating tale that captures the quirks and discomforts shared by a diverse set of characters during the unprecedented times of 2020. Narrated by an unnamed writer, the story begins with the funeral of a friend, leading to unexpected connections and entanglements. The writer finds herself caring for a green parrot named Eureka and sharing an apartment with a respiratory physician who arrives in New York to assist with the rising COVID-19 cases. The narrative takes an intriguing turn when the original parrot and apartment sitter returns, setting the stage for an unlikely friendship that unfolds amidst the challenges of the pandemic. Nunez's storytelling prowess shines as she seamlessly weaves together past events, friendships, and the struggles of the present. The novel delves into the vulnerabilities of the characters, emphasizing that, regardless of age, everyone faces moments of fragility. The book leaves readers with lingering questions, insightful observations, and a beautiful remnant of a unique moment in time, making it a highly recommended read.

Rajeev Bhattacharyya's "ULFA: The Mirage of Dawn" unveils the clandestine history of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a separatist entity that has significantly influenced India's Northeast since its emergence in the early 1980s. The book embarks on a journey into the heart of ULFA's narrative, featuring exclusive interviews with key figures scattered across India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, shedding light on the organization's intricate web of influence. This investigative masterpiece delves into the origins of ULFA, tracing its roots back to the historic Assam Movement that arose in the aftermath of the Assam Agitation in 1979. The fear of indigenous communities being displaced by "illegal immigrants" fueled this movement, ultimately giving rise to ULFA. The narrative navigates through major episodes, unraveling their causes and effects, and challenging prevalent interpretations that have molded public perceptions of ULFA over the years. Bhattacharyya's storytelling is fast-paced and rooted in extensive research, incorporating exclusive interviews with ULFA functionaries and former officers involved in counter-insurgency operations. The book captures the essence of ULFA's evolution, from a rebel organization fighting for the rights of Assam's indigenous people to its transformation into an insurgent/terrorist entity. Song of a Flute by Vidya Shankar

STORIZEN POETRY

A streak of blue flashes past, My heart flutters into corners my eyes cannot go Only to be deceived I pretend to be unflustered and take a few steps as if to move away A teasing jingle of anklet bells An embrace of soft, yellow silk A whiff of jasmine and tulsi… He must be close by Yet He evades me I slump into a heap My cheeks tear-stained Krishan! Where are You? As if in answer The lilting notes from His flute And a vision of His blue-black Form Not out there, but within Tangible Yet imperceptible Through my tears, I see my own skin Blue-black! His flute too, in my own hands! I put it to my lips I am the flute, I am the song He sits beside me Listening, watching with a smile His work in progress
