It used to be said that a person might switch careers two or three times in a lifetime. The futurists tell us that we will be managing tentwelve careers during our lifetime. Education is no longer a guarantee of either employment or employability. What will careers look like in a world of work disrupted by Artificial Intelligence? Abhijit Bhaduri’s books always have memorable and intriguing titles. His last book was called “Dreamers and Unicorns – why leadership, talent and culture are the new growth drivers." He wrote other non fiction books like“The Digital Tsunami," "Don’t Hire the Best,". He started off his career as a writer with two works of fiction. The ever popular "Mediocre but Arrogant" and the sequel "Married But Available"). His latest book "Career 3.0 – Six Skills You Must Have to Succeed” is another relevant masterpiece for our times.

UNIQUE CAREER JOURNEYS: PIVOTS AND BREAKTHROUGHS Abhijit emphasized that these career archetypes are not mutually exclusive, and individuals often transition between them. The ability to be agile and adaptable is crucial for success in a rapidly changing world. Personal and external factors can trigger these shifts, and one's career path becomes a unique journey influenced by a myriad of factors.

The title sparks curiosity. If the future is nudging us towards Career 3.0, is there a Career 1.0 or Career 2.0 that precedes this? We caught up with Abhijit to delve into his book and what it means to embrace Career 3.0.

Sharing personal experiences, Abhijit highlighted moving from Career 1.0 in a corporate role to Career 2.0 as an author and entrepreneur and then embracing Career 1.0 again as the head of Global Learning and Development at Microsoft. BEADING OF THOUGHTS IN SILENCE (A SHORT STORY) by Ankur R. Gupta

he rustle of soft breeze played gently at the corner of a room where Aarav was lost in deep thoughts while tying a knot of his tie. As he stares in the mirror, his chiseled manly face slowly begins to haze out into the soft face of a young boy, drifting him away into a memory lane when he was eight years old. Eeeek…… shrieked young Aarav, who ran for his life, the moment, he saw a frog in his sister’s hand. The slimy creature staring hard at him with bulging eyes was ready to jump on him anytime. Look Ma, what a chicken face! your son is, laughed Aarti as she ran behind her brother with a frog in her hand. Hey ! Aarti, stop troubling your Bhaiya, chided the mother softly, trying hard to conceal her laughter on seeing her son's flushed-out face. Hmmm… when will he learn, she murmured. I didn’t learn Ma, despite your persistent efforts, chuckled Aarav loudly as he returned to his present time. I’m still a scary cat when it comes to those slimy things, he said, in a sheepish voice, as he adjusted his knot. Walking away from the mirror, he gazed outside a window at the swelling blue sea. The oscillating movement of the crashing waves on the rocks started rolling him back again into a time when he was 12 years old. xxxx Aarav Bhaiya, don’t you get bored of playing with the same type of toys, grumbled Aarti, seeing the trail of toy cars stacked neatly on his study table. Last year, the whole room was piled with Star Trek movie character models, and now these cars, she complained. Aarav, busy assembling one of the car models, looked at her sister and smiled. Go, play with my other toys, he shoved her away gently. Ya, the one you hardly like, she grumbled cheekily.

Mmmm…. seriously Abhi, we should do something about Aarav's habit of getting stuck with one thing, spoke the mother with concern. It’s not just the toys… it's with everything…. the books, clothes, friends, he just doesn’t like to explore much. No, Sonia, it is not the right way you’re thinking, replied Abhi, looking up from his laptop. Then what is it, she asked, impatiently. Your Son is a Cheery pick-chooser, answered Abhi. I mean, if he develops a fascination for anything in particular, he goes in-depth about it. Seeing Sonia still not convinced, Abhi makes her recall a moment when she was upset with Aarav for not helping her put up Diwali Lights. What you fail to notice was that he was more interested in knowing the dynamics of how these light strings were made and how it works and…. And…. she spoke, cutting Abhi’s words in between….and for this year's Diwali, he assembled his LED strings to hang it at our door. Ghosh, for a month, this boy drove me crazy working secluded in his room. And, till he succeeded, he was such a restless soul, she blurted out with mixed emotions of grumble and pride. Exactly, nodded Abhi, this is what I’m trying to make you understand. Our son has an insatiable hunger to know everything about things he is passionate about. But a bare minimum appetite for the things he does not find interesting. Hmmm, Ya, perhaps you’re right, she nodded in agreement. As the reels of flashbacks paused, it brought Aarav, back into his present. Thanks, Dad, for standing by me and understanding me so well, he muttered softly. But, Dad, there was one thing you missed out on, or rather, you purposely ignored it, he murmured, taking a deep breath. Once again, he drifted back into his past when he was 23 and had just graduated. xxxx

Are you out of your mind Aarav, shouted his Dad in anger.

They were sitting in their immaculately done garden adorned with exotic plantations.

Calm down Abhi, at least let him finish speaking, intervened Sonia, trying to snap out the tension between Son and father.

What do you want me to say to him about? That bravo son, what a wise choice you’ve made, he spoke with sarcasm as he sipped his tea that had turned cold.

Abhi and Sonia were in shock as their son dropped a bomb on them by sharing that he was not going to the U.S.A. for his higher studies as he was keen on becoming a Chef and not a scientist. This is utter nonsense, grunted Abhi in disappointment, unable to digest what his son was talking. But Why Dad? protested Aarav in a grave voice. I want to do what I love to do. You loved assembling cars, and you were so passionate about science, experimenting, and inventing new things…. remember how hard you studied to get into a prestigious engineering college? You had aimed for a Ph.D. to be a scientist. Then why???

No, just for a change, listen to him, she requested. Abhi, as parents, we have guided our child in a way we wanted him to go. Well, I am not saying anything wrong with this…perhaps, at that time, the child is clueless, and we have to hold his hand. But now that child is a grownup Man. It's time to leave his hand and let him explore his journey. Hmm…Mmmm… he responded as kept listening to his wife, who reminded him how both of them had to leave their dreams under the pressure of their families. But still, that void of what if we could have pursued our dreams keeps needling them persistently. What are you trying to say? Sonia, he asked as his eyebrows joined together in a deep frown.

Because Dad, you forgot, said Aarav in an intense voice, cutting his father’s words in between. You deliberately ignored my strong liking for cooking. An interest that you never appreciated as my passion but a mere hobby. Ah! you had already decided for me to be a scientist, hadn’t Dad…. and seeing your intensity, I too began to believe that. Aarav tried to reason out that as a parent, he did the right thing in guiding him toward a career with lucrative prospects. But now, at this stage, as he embarks on the path of self-exploration, he realizes that he wants to make a different choice. I may fail, Dad, but tears will be of happiness and not of remorse, he pleaded, feeling a bit light, unloading the burden of thoughts he had been carrying in his mind for a long time.

Don’t let this what-if thorns get stuck with your son, lamented Sonia…leaving Abhi in a pensive mood.

I don’t know, muttered Abhi in a low voice. Taken aback, he goes out of the room…unable to bear the rudimentary shock his beloved son had given.

Well, Dad, this didn’t happen in just one night, said Aarav in a thoughtful voice as he began to explain how happy he felt when he got into his dream college.

xxxx This stubborn streak is the one that makes you different from others Son, spoke Abhi, sitting in their living room. Though I am still apprehensive about your decision, at the same time, I know the passion in you will drive you to all levels to achieve it. Aarav felt a bit relieved by his father speaking to him. However, when his father asked him what prompted him to choose a Chef, he became tense again.

xxxx It's been a week now, Abhi. Stop brooding and talk to your Son, chided Sonia softly to her husband. 18

It felt like a dream coming true…but ... as he hesitated, his father nudged him softy to speak. Aarav continued talking about how he persistently DECEMBER 2023

felt a kind of restlessness that pricked him almost every day, in his last four years of engineering. When I rewind my past and connect the dots, I realize that prickliness subsided whenever I came home during vacations and spent hours in the kitchen experimenting with cooking. But … It used to surface again when I returned to the hostel, and with time, it increased. Hmm…. murmured Abhi with eagerness as his son continued talking. Aarav recalled the time when his grades in the third year began to fall, and it was because he got distracted from his goal. In that anxiety, he spent hours seeing food videos, listening to podcasts by various chefs, or reading about food science. And, you know Dad, revealed Aarav... strangely, I felt good, not guilty about it, and that left me more baffled. Why didn’t you tell me, Son ? he asked tersely. How could I, Dad? I was not even sure what was making me restless…You always saw a scientist in me, and I too, saw with your eyes. He then further explained that despite the confusion he was battling, his love for science and focus on getting into a Ph.D. remained unchanged. So, he ignored this restlessness as a drifting thought and studied hard in his fourth year. But … he said, taking a long pause and closing his eyes, recalling the day he got the letter from the USA college for Ph.D. My first reaction was a sense of achievement, but it was momentary. The second reaction that lasted was I was again feeling restless....that time, I felt like the ground was slipping beneath my feet. There was a pin-drop silence in the room. The atmosphere in the room was engrossed in feelings of confusion and anxiety. Hmmm…. So that’s why you went for a 2-month solo trip, asked Sonia. Yes, Ma…I needed time to find out the answer to this, Why? DECEMBER 2023

Aarav then spoke, in length about how he traveled to remote places in India. But instead of tourist places, he found himself more interested in exploring the local cuisines and meeting people with a wide knowledge of food and a passion for cooking. He tried endless dishes, including a famous breakfast of Banaras Kachori sabzi, which had a history of about 200 years. And, how curious and excited he felt as he explored 12 old shops of this dish, each having its unique flavor. Similar feelings he experienced on the streets of Madurai, where he came across more than 20 varieties of Idlis, from its traditional style to the fusion. But the best was, said Aarav in an exhilarating voice when I had a hands-on experience with a few local Halwai to dig out some of the most sumptuous delicacies of Gewar, the famous sweet in Mewar. There, I had a chance to attend a workshop by a chef Rajdeep, and was amazed to see how he could transform traditional dishes into new ones or add new flavors to them. I understood from him and other local chefs that cooking is a science where you experiment with various condiments, combinations, and measurements to invent a new dish. All these explorations of days during the trip echoed in Aarav's mind and encouraged him to do some hard thinking. He realized that in these two months, not even once did he feel restless. He then began to connect the dots about his love for food since childhood. He finally concluded that cooking has always been his first love but it didn’t get a chance to blossom. However, it never faded away from my heart… rather it became more intense, he stated in a deep voice. I realized my true passion lies in combining my love for science with my culinary aspirations. So, I want to become a Chef and a Researcher in the area of food science. Abhi and Sonia kept listening to him. They couldn’t recall the last time they saw him so excited and happy. Aarav gazed into his father’s eyes deeply to speak. Dad, I feel adrenaline when creating a new dish in my kitchen rather than in my science labs. STORIZEN MAGAZINE

For the first time, I have made a choice. I want to embark on my self-journey as a Chef. Ah, though I’m a bit scared …but as you always said, I’m stubborn like a bull to get what I’m passionate about, he chuckled softly, trying to snap out the chord of tension in the room. …please let me do it. The plead and intensity in his voice moistened Abhi’s eyes. Sonia, his wife, held his hand and whispered, Abhi, it’s time to let go of our son’s hand to let him fly … understanding how their son Beading his Thoughts in Silence, chose his journey. xxxx Aarav, are you ready to go, called out a voice, knocking on his room door softly, which broke his chain of thoughts of the past to bring him into the present. Ah…in a minute, Dad, he called out as he tightened his tie knot. Hmm...come in, and turned to greet his Ma, Dad, Aarti, and his wife Sara. Let’s go, Master Chef Aarav, it’s your big day today, said Abhi, beaming with pride. Aarav had trolled tirelessly for years, merging his engineering knowledge with his culinary skills. He developed cutting-edge kitchen appliances and a sustainable, fast, futuristic series of food delicacies, especially popular with Gen Z. His innovative contributions were highly appreciated by private cooperates who flooded him with offers to start his own Food business. And, now, he was all set to go to receive the most prestigious award in the chef community, the Michelin Stars.

When New Year Bell Rings...

Snow-covered streets I see Twinkles on the sky I behold Smiling faces everywhere Fills my heart with utmost pleasure Attracts my senses The flavoursome New Year cake Which is decorated with nuts and fresh cream Oh, is this real or I see a dream? The delicious cake I see In front of my eyes Which is irresistible Sweet and delectable. The flavor of the cake Melts my heart When a piece of the sweetness Goes into my mouth. My heart dances with pleasure again When the fresh roses in the flower vase Spread its fragrance here and there. I cannot resist myself When I see happy faces everywhere Cheering noises and the raising toasts of the new year. The new year bells ring afar My heart dances with joy With close ones near me Who exchanges New Year greetings with each other.
