A
Feature

In a candid conversation with author Balli

Kaur Jaswal, we delve into the inspiration, research, and creative process behind her groundbreaking novel, Now You See Us

Through exploring important social themes, empowering migrant workers, and navigating cultural intersections, Jaswal's work sheds light on the often-invisible voices of Singaporean society

Unveiling the Inspiration: Tackling Classism, Prejudice, and Women's Rights

Jaswal reveals that her inspiration for exploring themes of classism, prejudice, and women's rights in Now You See Us came from a personal experience during her teenage years. "My family moved from Singapore to the Philippines shortly after a Filipina domestic worker was executed for murdering a Singaporean," she shares This incident opened her eyes to the gravity of injustice and the impact of class prejudice on real lives It sparked a desire within her to shed light on the vulnerability of migrant workers, who are integral to the success of nations like Singapore but remain voiceless

Compelling Characters: Breaking Away from Stereotypes

When it came to developing the characters in Now You See Us, Jaswal aimed to challenge prevailing stereotypes of domestic workers in Singapore. She explains, "I wanted to steer away from the binary portrayals of either untrustworthy women, who are looking to take advantage of their employers, or saintly figures, who sacrifice everything and do not have moments of weakness or flaws " Instead, she sought to humanize these characters, giving them depth and complexity By doing so, Jaswal created relatable individuals with whom readers could connect on a profound level

Balancing History and Narrative: Weaving Filipino Politics into the Story

Jaswal emphasizes that the main narrative always took priority when incorporating elements of Filipino politics and history into Now You See Us She states, "I focused on answering the questions of the story, the characters' desires, and the obstacles they faced " By doing so, she ensured that the novel did not become a history lesson but rather a compelling story enriched by its cultural context

Authentic Portrayals: Researching the Lives of Domestic Workers

To authentically portray the experiences of domestic workers, Jaswal engaged in extensive research. She had conversations with domestic workers themselves, gaining firsthand insights into their lives. Additionally, she immersed herself in their stories by reading first-hand accounts, memoirs, and articles written by domestic workers This research allowed her to depict their experiences with empathy and authenticity

In her words, “I spoke to domestic workers and had casual conversations with some employers I also read some first-hand accounts and memoir pieces by domestic workers to get a sense of what their lives were like and what specific challenges they experienced in Singapore. There were also plenty of articles, news items, national conversations, etc, that emerged over the years whenever the topic of domestic workers’ rights came up. Reading the comment sections in particular gave me a lot of insight into the fears and perceptions surrounding domestic workers

The Power of the Story: Immersion and Empathy

When asked about her hopes for readers, Jaswal emphasizes that storytelling remains paramount She states, "Firstly, I hope readers

Challenges and Rewards: Writing as a Woman

As a woman writer, Jaswal acknowledges the challenges she faces during the marketing and categorization of her novels.” I don’t encounter issues during the writing process as a woman, but once the book is out of my hands and being marketed, there’s always the issue of readers categorizing it in a gendered way or regarding it as chick-lit (not that there’s anything wrong with chick-lit – it’s the dismissive attitude towards that genre that bothers me) ” However, she believes that discerning readers will ultimately appreciate and connect with her work

Cultural Intersections: Identity, Belonging, and Today's Globalized Society

Jaswal seamlessly incorporates themes of culture, identity, and belonging into her narrative. She states, "My life and experience of the world is intersectional and multicultural."

Balli Kaur Jaswal: Reader vs. Writer

Jaswal discusses the distinct mental spaces she occupies as both a reader and a writer Reading offers her relaxation and tranquility while writing unleashes a torrent of plotlines and characters in her mind

She states, “They are two very different things! Reading is certainly more relaxing than writing, but when I’m in the thick of writing a novel, I have a hard time concentrating on reading So

Controversy in Utah as Bible Faces Ban in Schools, Book of Mormon at Risk

In Utah, a parent's complaint led the Davis School District to remove the Bible from elementary and middle schools while retaining it in high schools The complaint cited vulgarity and violence in Bible verses The district also removed other books as required by a state law involving parental input on sensitive material A review request for the Book of Mormon was subsequently submitted, but details were not disclosed Conservative parent activists across the US are raising concerns about explicit content in schools. Love the Person You See in the Mirror...

e cannot serve from an empty cup."

Self-care is the most essential, to evolve as a GIVER

Without nourishing ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally, we cannot do justice in caring for others.

The first step to self-care is to stop overwhelming oneself with too many responsibilities. It is OKAY if we couldn't tick all the tasks from the 'to do' list. It is OKAY if we pause, take a break, rest a little before we get back to our endless list of work that drains our energy in all aspects.

We don't have to prove anything to anyone Each one's journey, is unique Not comparing with others' journey, not allowing the society's opinion to affect us, and doing what we love are wise efforts/decision towards self-care

Learning to say "No", and prioritizing our own well-being is the greatest gift we can give ourselves.

Setting boundaries, and saying "No" saves us from a lot of stress

My yoga eveyday on waking up, is to smile.

I make sure the day starts with just a tiny smile, and being kind to the person in the mirror Rest of the day, even if challenging, i make sure I wake up with hope, gratitude, smile, reminding myself "Am my own Sunshine"

Learning to be our own anchor, fills us with immense strength

It's not easy, but it's not impossible.

Self-care begins when we learn to live life in moments In celebrating ourselves

Pampering us with little things right from taking time to sip, and savor a cup of coffee/tea, spending time in Nature, listening to favorite songs, watching a movie, going to the Sea, cycling, dancing, getting drenched in the rain or making paper boats, shopping, wearing your favorite outfit/getting dressed up, or meet a good friend the list is long

Every second spent exclusively to make oneself happy, is self-care

Without worrying what will others say/think of me

Silence, is part of self-care. If we feel we need some silence, space, to connect with our self, to calm our chaos, confusions, to just be, to breathe, choosing silence is a peaceful path for self-care, and we don't have to explain our silence to everyone, and wait for people to understand.

There will always be nitpickers, judgemental, inconsiderate people in the world who can't/won't empathise

It's OKAY to break down, to feel lost, frustrated when life's challenges/certain phases overwhelm. We don't have to be positive/cheerful all the time

Acknowledging our pain, struggle, vulnerable moments, tears, are all part of self-care

Being in our own cocoon helps us to gradually heal. Choosing to stay away from people/crowd,(not feeling comfortable to attend calls, have conversations) are all part of self-care and it is absolutely OKAY to say, "Am not emotionally available now".

You are NOT a party pooper, if you seek some silence, space, & have to say NO! Wish to stay at home, when you are expected to attend a party/an event...

You don't have to explain beyond a point, when healing is often a lonely journey The eternally judgemental people are NOT going to empathise, or handhold you.

A NO, is a complete sentence. Saying NO is undoubtedly a form of self-care

The right people will stay with you, wait for you until you heal

We don't need anyone's consent/approval to gift ourselves some much needed love, care, attention, and above all, respect

Let's value ourselves with abundant kindness

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 15 JUNE 2023 W

Even if the whole world lets us down, if we learnt to love ourselves, we will never feel lonely We are our own anchor

Let's learn to land in love with ourselves each day. Now smile, and tell the person you see in the mirror, and say, "You deserve an ocean of love You are important And, I love you" Yes! You deserve to be loved

To Love Yourself is To Love Yourself is the Start of a Lifelong the Start of a Lifelong

Romance Romance

ANKUR R GUPTA

elf-love is a buzzing word in social media, and of late numerous individual opinions are shared splitting into factions. One group considers selflove being self-centered and selfish. However, the other group feels it islike practicing a romance with oneself to fall in love with others

As an individual, my opinion is more aligned with the latter group, romancing oneself. Selflove may often be seen as selfish because people confuse it with narcissism However, this is a misconception

Prioritizing your values and needs is not about being obsessed with yourself but about accepting, valuing, and caring for yourself It is like the safety instructions on a plane: you have to put on your oxygen mask before helping others. If you fail to take care of yourself, you will not be doing fair justice caring for anyone else Neglecting your well-being can often burn you out with resentment and frustration and you begin to feel like an empty cup. On the contrary, when you love yourself, you are more confident and happier, which makes you a better person to be around

Self-love for me means taking time to do the things that make you happy and relaxed. Maybe, that's taking a yoga class, reading a book, going for a walk in nature, talking to a trusted friend or therapist when feeling low, or taking a mental health day off from work and routine tasks. It is all about carving out time in your busy schedule to do the things that bring you simple joy and help you recharge

Signs that exhibit you are low in loving yourself-

Comparing yourself to others is a surefire way to diminish your self-love It is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, which just doesn't work. You are unique and special in your way, and trying to be like someone else only takes away from your individuality Comparisons diminish your accomplishments and strengths

In the present world, we constantly are bombarded by social media with images of the perfect bodies, perfect relationships, and perfect lives of others And, drowning ourselves in the pool of comparisons, leading to stress, self-pity, and self-criticism. But those images are often far from reality So, the next time you are obsessing over Instagram reels, try to reframe from being influenced by such fake perfections Everyone has their share of ongoing struggles that you are oblivious to. The hike up suicides in the world of glamour and glitz in recent times reflects that darker secretive side that no one is perfect or has a perfect life

So, instead of focusing on what you lack, you should focus on what you have and work towards your personal growth and progress As wisely put up by Mark Twain-A man cannot be comfortable without his approval. So, by acknowledging your worth and treating yourselves with compassion, you can break free from the cycle of self-doubt, comparison, and validation

Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others – Brené Brown.

Are you a people pleaser who tends to put other needs before their own? If yes, you may need to set some personal boundaries and start taking as good care of yourself as you do others This is a crucial step toward personal growth as you begin to love and respect yourself enough, to not let people use and abuse you.

I used to be under the spell of nice girl syndrome, always saying yes to everything and everyone, even when it meant sacrificing my time and well-I used to be under the spell of nice girl syndrome, always saying yes to everything and everyone, even when it meant sacrificing my time and well-

being. But that all changed when I realized that my own needs and wants were just as important as anyone else's I understood that saying no is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength and selfrespect. Then onwards, I begin, to set my boundaries by communicating my limits and expectations distinctively and firmly without feeling guilty or ashamed This meant saying no to things that didn't align with my values or goals, and being assertive when others tried to cross my boundaries.

I gradually also learned to let go without any guilt, the things, people, and relationships, that were toxic in my life. Of course, there were times when I slipped up or felt uncomfortable. But instead of being a harsh self-critic, I learned to forgive myself and keep moving forward The journey required not one-time practice but an ongoing process and loads of practice and patience. But the rewards are worth it as you emerge more confident and happier

So, if you are struggling with saying no or setting personal boundaries, know that you are not alone and jump into this ongoing journey of romancing yourself, as it is worth it

Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward- Roy T. Bennett.

A river flows effortlessly forward and never takes a reverse course, despite going through numerous twists and turns It’s a constant reminder not to harp on the past but keep flowing forward. This metaphor aligns very much with a journey of selflove that requires acknowledging the downsides of the past but not dwelling on them Instead, focus on your present and future and work towards becoming the best version of yourselves.

20 | STORIZEN MAGAZINE JUNE 2023

To conclude, the mantra to self-love is to realize the importance of mindfulness. This means recognizing the signs when we need to take a step back and practice self-care This can help us to feel more grounded and centered and can lead to a greater sense of self-exploration

Learning to respect oneself is a lifelong journey that requires self-awareness, self-love, assertiveness, self-care, and positive relationships It is not always easy, but worth the effort for a happier and more fulfilling life.

How you love yourself is How you teach others to love you.

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 21 JUNE 2023

What inspired you to write the book, "A Dismantled State: The Untold Story of Kashmir after Article 370"?

In one stroke, on August 5, 2019, the geographical and political map of India’s most troubled and complex state was changed amidst a brutal and militarized lockdown that lasted months This was followed by massive restructuring of laws bringing radical legal changes, with a momentous impact on the lives of the residents of the region But there was silence in the region The only dominant narrative was the official version But none of this reflected the ground reality. Residents of Jammu and Kashmir were reeling under a sense of dispossession and living with an acute sense of fear As a journalist, I was dealing with a huge information desert The book which began as a quest to make sense of what was happening actually started as a journey to write a series of articles My attempt was to piece together whatever information was available in the public domain, scrutinise it, authenticate it and dig out more information wherever possible. But as I began to collect information, I realized there was a bigger picture to present than just a series of articles This book is a humble attempt to bring to the public domain alternative voices and perspectives that have been less heard or unheard. It is also an attempt to analyze the impact of the Indian government’s engagement with the region on the people’s lives, to understand the deafening silence in Kashmir and to see where we are headed. In doing so, I have been able to bring in only a very small fraction of the many stories that continue to be unheard

The Government's decision to amend Article 370 has created a sense of silence among the people of Kashmir Can you describe it more?

It is very difficult to understand the sudden silence that descended on Kashmir where a small incident could trigger a volatile reaction But the silence was so eerie and deafening that it clearly did not look like the calm that the Indian state was describing it as. The silence was an outcome of acute suppression of the people. This suppression was far more sophisticated

than the previous violent strategies used in the past

It was less bloody and yet more brutal Physical violence was less but there was more psychological violence. The heavy militarization, the massive scale of continuing arrests, and the communication shutdowns created an unprecedented level of psychological terror which I have explained in chapters 4 to 6 of the book

Could you share any specific incidents or experiences that highlight the humiliation faced by ordinary Kashmiris while documenting the book?

People including top brass of politicians were picked up and taken to police stations and jails in the middle of the night from their homes, hours before the legal changes were made If this was the fate of the most powerful people of Kashmir, one could well imagine the fate of commoners. People were picked up randomly but the detained people included a crosssection of people – politicians, journalists, lawyers, businessmen, activists, academics, mohalla committee members, and ordinary people. Many of them were taken to jails outside the state and their families were not informed There were people who were very poor and had to sell their assets to find out the whereabouts of their jailed kin and travel to distant locations like Agra to meet them. For instance, there was the case of Mushtaq, who spent nine months in a prison in Bareilly in UP before he was released in May 2020 His family did not know of his whereabouts till his brother was informed ‘shortly before my release’. He neither had an extra pair of clothes nor any money One officer in the jail was sympathetic to him and offered him a set of clothes that helped him survive through those months with dignity.

As I quote in my book: “Many family members of the detainees who visited these jails were poor and illiterate and could speak only Kashmiri; and, thus, they were horrified to find that inside the jails, the security guards would insist that they could only speak ‘Hindi’. One mother of a detainee said that during her visit to a jail in Bareilly, all that she and her jailed son could do was stare at each other’s faces The visit was allowed for a few minutes under surveillance, and though her son could speak Urdu and tried to, she could not

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 23 JUNE 2023

understand They looked at each other, communicating with moist eyes and tears.” The detentions were a continuous process. The security forces raided homes of people without a pretext and snatching their ATM cards, I-cards, mobile phones, laptops and forcing people to approach them in camps – where they were in for a more excessive bout of harassment. Sometimes, they would be detained, sometimes, they would be handed back to their families after subjecting them to torture.

These are only some of the humiliating experiences The very fact that a democratic country had decided to switch off the internet, mobile phones of an entire population leaving them without even the basic health care facilities that are digitally accessible or be able to call for an ambulance was extremely humiliating It was nothing short of reducing people to second-rate citizens. People trekked miles to access the government set up phone booths for a oneminute call to their children studying and working outside and all they did was cry out Journalists were compelled to work out of a small government set-up shack with poor facilities and their entire work under surveillance. These were the daily indignities that people suffered for a long time and much more

Regarding Article 370 and the government decision-making process, do you have any concerns or criticisms?

Article 370 was the constitutional link between India and Jammu & Kashmir which acceded to India under exceptional circumstances. Though it was already hollowed down by previous governments, it protected the rights and privileges of the residents of J&K with respect to land, jobs, college admissions etc. A large section of the population of J&K felt that accession was not final and that their fate should be decided as per the UN resolutions and the promise of a plebiscite made to them by India’s first prime minister. They already felt betrayed by the way New Delhi had for years manipulated the politics of Jammu and Kashmir and undemocratically removed leaders, even thrown them in jails. Yet despite these betrayals, there was space for civilized dialogue. By removing

that, by taking away the privileges and rights of the people they cared most about, a monumental damage has been made. The government of India has not resolved Kashmir but shut all doors for resolution of Kashmir Political issues cannot be resolved without the involvement of people In fact, the disproportionate use of force and suppression may in the long-term have an adverse impact not only for Kashmir but also rest of India

Could you elaborate on the implications of reimagining of Kashmir as "Naya Kashmir"?

Naya Kashmir is an act of completely dismantling a state – one that was the most complex, volatile and a nuclear flashpoint Nothing good can be imagined of a vision, even if well-intentioned, that is built by suppressing local populations, instead of involving them And here you see that an entire architecture of existing laws has been brought down and new laws have come in place reversing the gains of the land to the tiller. Besides, local people are being marginalized and threatened by influx of outsiders who will easily monopolize the job industry and businesses Then there is also the threat of environmental impact

Article 370 is surrounded by many myths. How far does “A Dismantled State” debunk these?

I have tried my best to debunk many of these. But this book is more about the impact of what happened on the lives of the people I will leave it to the legal experts to shed more light

Can you highlight any notable quotes or passages from your book that encapsulate the essence of the situation in Kashmir after August 5, 2019?

For me, every word does. I’ll leave that to the reader. But I could describe the situation using keywords like humiliation, fear, psychological trauma, dispossession and hopelessness Of course, that is not true of the entire population There are people who benefit in some situations. But I am talking about the overwhelming feeling which exists today – not only in Kashmir but also in Ladakh and Jammu, though in lesser degrees in the latter two

24 | STORIZEN MAGAZINE JUNE 2023

The focus on criticizing various players including politicians and anti-social forces while exploring the history of Kashmir is noticeable in the book. Can you further clarify?

Kashmir has been complex and volatile for years It was been mishandled for years by governments in New Delhi and also by local politicians and other stakeholders. The Modi government has added another layer but one that is extremely destructive It is important to see this historic moment in its perspective and see that there are many others who are responsible for reducing Kashmir to a mess.

Is “A Dismantled State” a historical analysis or a day-by-chronicle of what happened in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh?

As a journalist, I am a day-to-day chronicler of events But it is the daily chronicles that makeup history Historians look at different kinds of sources and use a different lens to research and analyze things. It is more thorough. It looks at a wider range of things. This is more a journalistic work

As the editor of Kashmir Times, did your experience and role in the media influenced your perspective on the events unfolding in Kashmir after the amendment of Article 370?

I have worked as a journalist for over three decades. I have seen the many ups and downs of Kashmir’s politics and situation. I have a fair understanding of how people would be impacted by certain actions and events My experiences and the stories and narratives that have been a part of my life-long work were indeed instructive in understanding Kashmir after Article 370 revocation

Hello, self.

Self Care Is Not Being Selfish

ime was when I used to prioritize others' words and what others used to say about me. Do I look good? Am I looking smart in this outfit? Does my achievement mean anything to my friends and relatives? All the time, my mind was occupied with other people's opinions If my friend say a certain outfit does not suit me, I used to keep the dress back in the wardrobe If my relatives say that I am not open to them, I used to feel bad The words of my relatives used to pin in my heart. If my neighbors say that I am choosy and moody, I used to keep thinking about it the whole night Those words keep oscillating in my mind for the entire night At last, my sleep hampers and I wake up with the tired look the next morning. Others' statements used to matter me a lot Most of the time, I tried to look good in other's eyes I used to give my best to make people believe that I am good in most ways. In a bid to prove myself in every step, I kept losing my mental peace and myself Every little word of others means a lot to me Positive words of others made me feel good. Negative words of others made me feel depressed Time came in my life when I had to put a stop to other people's opinions I decided to live a life for myself.

Why is it that we keep valuing other's words and other's opinions? Why others need to judge me and why I have to pay heed to them? Is it bad to value ourselves? Is it bad to say 'No' to people? All these years, I tried to please others In a bid to make others happy and be good to others, I started losing myself which I did not realize. Then, I said to myself, "Enough is enough." It is time to live for myself It is time to take care of myself

Self-care is important for all of us Give some time to yourself. You will have you family to look after. You will have your work commitments and other things in your daily life Amidst everything, you

Practice yoga to gain physical and mental fitness

Train your mind to think positive and stay calm in every situation. Do not overstress yourself. Take a break from your work so that you can spend time with yourself You spend time with your family, friends and relatives Do you ever spend time with yourself? If not yet, start spending time with yourself from now on. Delve into your likes and dislikes. Think what you love to do and focus your energy in doing things you love

Treat your body and mind like a temple Instill positive thoughts and filter out negative thoughts. Be with people who motivate you and distance from people who de-motivate you It is your life and do not let others to control your life Do not handover the remote of your life in other's hands Stop toiling day and night in office and at your place. Convert your tired look into a fresh one by indulging in beauty therapies Consume fresh fruits and veggies instead of grabbing a packet of chips or munching on a burger Give your taste buds the crunchy taste of nuts instead of binging on a slice of pizza.

Fresh fruits will not only make you fresh from outside but from within Take a soothing shower or spend time amidst aromatic candles Read inspirational books or do meditation. Mirror of Wisdom

The front doorbell rings impatiently, intimating that my childhood friend Reema is here

“So good to see you,” I say, in emotional plenitude, as I open the door, beckoning her to come inside. Accompanying her is a beautiful, teenage girl, probably fifteen or sixteen years old

“My daughter, Siya!” Reema introduces on noticing the inquisitive look on my face

I welcome them to my two-bedroom apartment in a posh colony of the city, something which my husband and I are extremely proud to have achieved

“Tell me how have you been? We’re probably meeting after maybe two decades ” I say as I gather a cheerful spot with my friend, wondering how the hours of our pleasant childhood days have passed so rapidly.

“Forget about that You don’t look good Don’t you take care of yourself?” Reema says crabbily, in a loud voice with an eye roll, putting an abrupt end to my recollections of our joyful past. Perhaps she has detected the dark circles around my eyes, the fine lines on my forehead, which I’ve failed to conceal with colorful make-up. Someone has rightly said that it’s difficult to hide anything from a sincere, thoughtful friend

“Where’s the time for that?” I say as my eyes restlessly wander around Siya. If I’d

children, they’d have been the same age as her. Seeing her I realize that a long time has gone and we’re growing old

It’s difficult to make out Reema’s age and anybody will agree with me that she looks almost ten years younger, like a tricenarian How does she maintain herself?

“You’ve to find time for yourself. What are you busy with?” Reema asks with a natural, friendly spontaneity, her tone a few decibels lower than before

“I’ve to do a lot of household work dusting, cleaning, cooking, shopping daily-needed items. Taking care of my husband is another big task My world revolves around him right from early in the morning, helping him to get ready for office, iron his clothes, prepare his breakfast, tiffin, and then in the evening when he comes back, I’ve to prepare snacks, dinner ”I say, listing out my daily chores

“And in the process, you forget to take care of yourself,” she says with a note of anger. I notice the same earnestness in her eyes with which she used to wake me up early during our childhood days and ask me to join her in the morning walk

Her words invite an inexplicable feeling that tortures me under its grip like clouds tinctured by the dazzling sun something that is so lovely yet gloomy, so peaceful yet annoying, so bright yet shadowy as if it has reached somewhere deep that has hardly ever been touched upon, like an unexplored terrain being conquered for the first time ever

SolemnlyI follow her eyes around the spot-less, sparkling mahogany sofa-set, matte-finish center table; an exquisite, priceless wall painting of a riveting scenery of a river with the glowing sun overhead, its sinuous trail through the dale is much like the chaos in the labyrinths of my mind amidst perfect order; a glass wardrobe stuffed with expensive, decorative items like statues, figurines, vases, candle holders, display containers and halt on the engineered-wood bookshelves full of classic books by great authors like Dostoevsky, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Toni Morrison, Leo Tolstoy, and many more.

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 31 JUNE 2023
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
-Buddha

“How many of these have you read?” Reema asks excitedly, while her attention is engaged elsewhere.

“It’s just that ” Hesitantly, I fidget with my hair, and my voice trails off. All these books are just like showpieces for me which I seldom consider worthy of notice except for the time when I eliminate the accumulated dust from them

“You couldn’t find time. I get it.”

I spend my entire day tidying the apartment, keeping everything spick and span This is something I do to relieve myself of the fathomless sensation, etched with sharp distinctness of negativity, that overwhelms me at times a bout of loneliness as if I’m standing on a runway, while my contemporaries have boarded the planes of fulfillment and soared high in the sky, gone much ahead of me I miss my very purpose of life.

“Can I borrow some books, Aunty?” Siya says suddenly, breaking into my thoughts

I deftly avoid the question, as parting with the timeless classics is something that I’m not comfortable about for the fear that they’ll be mishandled

“It’s ok to have a little dust here and there. Nobody will remember that. But the most important thing is how you look after yourself and enjoy the little joys of life ”Reema pauses for a moment as if to arrange her phrases and resumes, “Like Amaterasu you need to come out of your cocoon and recognize your true value, your inherent qualities.”

She narrates the story of Amaterasu Omikami, who was the Sun goddess of the oldest Japanese religion called Shinto. On being treated badly by her brother Susanoo, she withdrew, hid in the cave of heaven, and shut the entrance with an enormous rock As a consequence of her disappearance, the world plunged into darkness, and evil spirits reigned and rampaged through the earth.

The gods persuaded Amaterasu to come out, but she didn’t listen to their plea In despair, the assembled gods decided to lure the peeved goddess into coming out by organizing a grand party near the cave. They put a big mirror in front of the cave and sparkling jewels on a tree Uzume, the goddess of laughter,

began a dance accompanied by loud music.

Drawn by the music and uproarious laughter, Amaterasu drew closer to the cave entrance to find out what was going on outside. Fascinated by her own stunning reflection in the mirror, she came out of the cave Finally, her radiant light covered and illuminated the world

Reema turns her head toward me, her eyes fixed on mine as if trying to investigate what’s going on inside me I rummage through my mind where my confused thoughts are lone wanderers like lost travelers unsure about their destination in an attempt to organize my process of understanding.

She lowers her eyes and continues with the same rhythm as before, “You need to have a healthy sense of self-worth It’s vital not only for you but also for your family. Only an enlightened one can brighten the lives of others. Amaterasu deprived herself from her own greatness as well as the entire world The mirror in the mythological tale symbolizes wisdom I can only hold the mirror for you where you can visualize your own spirit. What you see in it is entirely up to you.”

I nod my head in agreement My thoughts begin like undifferentiated complexes in the deep ravines of my mind and dissipate randomly without having any definite object of involvement.

“What you do every day is absolutely necessary but not at the cost of your own well-being Looking after yourself is something that only you can do. There is still time. If you don’t pay attention to yourself both mentally and physically now, you will have to hire many people to do that later on, and mind it, you wouldn’t like it then It would be like a bitter medicine that you will be forced to take.”

After Reema and her daughter depart, I focus on self-introspection, something I haven’t done in a very long time. I comprehend that taking care of myself needs to be prioritized. Following a set routine, intake of a balanced diet and timely meals, appropriate exercise, reading good books, pursuing my old hobbies of singing, painting, knitting will help me to revitalize myself and my weary mind.

Neglecting oneself is a sin and I have committed that It dawned on me that every living being is

unique and has a role to play even if it is minuscule on the stage of life At last, the path to recognition of self-worth seems to come into view and rise to the fore, removing the veil of ignorance, disregard, and welcoming the light of self-discovery Once set free, I gaze at the wall painting with renewed optimism like never before. Now I know that the tortuous river is bound to meet its ocean.

IINTERVIEW NTERVIEW WithShevlinSebastian

Author,TheStolen

Necklace:ASmallCrime inaSmallTown

Photo: Shevlin (Right) and Thajudheen (Left)

What inspired you to write ‘The Stolen Necklace’ and delve into the real-life story of V.K. Thajudheen?

A friend of my agent, Anish Chandy, founder of the Labyrinth Literary Agency, forwarded a link. It was about a middle-class Doha-based entrepreneur who had come to Kerala to attend the wedding of his daughter The police arrested him for stealing a gold necklace. The CCTV image looked like him. I found this story intriguing And so, with the encouragement of Anish, I wrote a book about what had happened

Can you share some challenges faced by Thajudheen during his 54-day imprisonment, as depicted in the book?

Thajudheen had never seen the inside of a prison. So, you can imagine his shock that he entered one for the first time as an alleged offender The different types of people he met there: the career criminals, people accused under the Protection of Children from the Sexual Offences Act, violence-prone political workers, and fraudsters. These were people he had never met before It was tough to interact with them

The food was bland and doing ablutions in the public, each toilet marked by low walls, was hard for Thajudheen. What was most difficult for Thajudheen was to handle the hopelessness He could feel his life being brought to a halt and the aching pain of not enjoying freedom anymore

How did the experience of following this case from day one impact you as a seasoned journalist and co-author?

Like Thajudheen, I am a middle-class person. The more he kept narrating the story, the more I realized that this was something that could have happened to me, too So it was a nerve-wracking experience. To hear the impact on the family, to see how the police behaved with him and his family, all this was disturbing

In your opinion, what does this story reveal about the flaws within the Indian law enforcement system?

It seems to me the police have a lackadaisical attitude For them to arrest somebody is like having a cup of tea Many have lost empathy for the victims. They don’t realize the huge emotional and psychological impact an arrest can have on a person and his family If they are found wrong about the arrest later on, no authority is going to impose any punishment on them So, there is nothing to worry about.

Could you discuss the long-lasting consequences faced by individuals wrongfully accused and convicted, as explored in the book?

The first problem is financial For years, they have no income How to pick up the pieces What to do now? Who will offer jobs to people who have been away from the workplace for so long? Do they have the skills to compete?

The person has to recover from the psychological trauma His family also has to heal Thajudheen’s family has also suffered from trauma. How long does it take to heal? Unfortunately, it might take years So, this is a very tragic situation I hope the police officers who read this book will understand the impact of their actions. They should ask themselves one question: what if this happened to my family?

Did you encounter other instances of police wrongfully accusing innocent people while researching for this book? Could you provide some insights into those cases?

There are many cases I devoted one entire chapter to this. But what came as a shock to me was that even in the US, the leading democracy in the world, there were so many false cases However, the good news is that in many states in the US, they provide financial compensation for wrongful incarceration. We should implement this in India so that victims can have a decent amount of money to start life afresh again

What do you hope readers will take away from ‘The Stolen Necklace’ regarding the pursuit of justice and the flaws within the legal system?

STORIZEN MAGAZINE | 35 JUNE 2023

It’s very tough Because of the slow moving of cases, it will take years before the courts administer justice. But you need to adopt a positive attitude, come what may, so that you can win in the end Don’t be your own enemy Accept the situation and say to yourself, ‘No matter what happens, I will get justice and clear my name.’ This is easy to say, but it is tremendously hard to practice

How did the unjust tactics and bruised egos of the Chakkarakkal police impact the protagonist’s life and his perception of trust?

Thajudheen is still trying to recover from the emotional damage. Even now, there are days when he feels depressed. There are many financial pressures He has a family he has to look after His trust in law enforcement has diminished There is no doubt after that

What role does the theme of resilience play in the protagonist’s journey throughout the book?

Thajudheen’s family supported him throughout. What gave a major fillip to Thajudheen was that the media took up the case Once the matter reached the spotlight, Thajudheen knew that the possibility of getting justice had increased So, all this contributed to the sense of resilience that he showed.

Can you discuss the significance of shedding light on wrongful convictions and the need for reform within the legal system, as portrayed in ‘The Stolen Necklace?’

Hopefully, books like this will spur civil society and the media to take up the cudgels on behalf of the victims. The government should implement strictures for officers who file false cases That will ensure they will be more careful in the future

SELF LOVE IS THE GREATEST INVESTMENT

One day I asked what Self-Love means to me Does dressing well mean Self-Love or does going to a cafe alone and having a coffee mean Self-Love? Or Maybe Solo-Travelling does mean Self-Love to me I have tried most of these but honestly, nothing of this felt like True Self-Love Maybe we can call these the ways to SelfExplore or the way to Introspect about my thoughts.

Over the last decade slowly and eventually I started to know things about me that were not so good or maybe some traits which you know make you an imperfect person. People in spirituality call it Shadow Self What I understood in later years of Life was that accepting your Shadow Self and making peace with it is True Self-Love. Also genuinely working on things that you can change to be your better version is True Self-Love

Did you ever think about what you will do when the people who should save and secure your life are more terrifying than those who threaten your life? It's incredible how obstinate individuals can be, even when incorrect Even more remarkable is the refusal of those

entrusted to uphold justice to change their methods despite being exposed When they devolve into a legal nightmare, one must accept that our democracy has lost its course. "The Stolen Necklace" is based on the real story of V.K. Thajudheen, who spent 54 days in prison without obtaining any compensation for the mental, emotional, and physical pain he endured. Thajudheen and Shevlin Sebastian, a seasoned journalist who has covered the case since its start, collaborated on the book. The police in Chakkarakkal, a tiny town in Kerala, wrongfully accused V.K. Thajudheen of stealing a necklace based on a single CCTV screenshot They are determined to retain him until a bribe is paid The life of a middle-aged father of three with a freshly married daughter is flipped upside down instantly He becomes a criminal stuck between shattered egos and unfair techniques The readers, in clear language, travel through the protagonist's difficulties Uncertainty and loneliness become a prisoner's permanent companions in Thalassery Maintaining his humanity in a setting where everyone is viewed as less than human becomes difficult. Days blur together, and memories start to feel less painful. Thajudheen vows to never give up even as hope progressively vanishes, repeating the mantra "Every night ends in the dawn" in his head. The story has emotions, anger, dissent, fear, doubt, and uncertainty. The narration gets into the skin, and for a second, the readers might forget they are reading a book or watching a thriller movie

This poignant tale is not an easy read, but it's worth your time and makes you think about what you can do when you are framed for something you haven't done. Author Shevlin shares this in the initial pages of the book. Don't miss this book!
