From the helm Kia ora from chilly Christchurch! I am just back from fabulous Fiji where I was up welcoming the second group of the Pacific Rally. We had a wonderful lunch out at the stunning Cloud 9 floating bar, catching up with lots of yachties over that side. I then spent a week cruising the spectacular Yasawa Islands with my Mum and Son. This time the main group of rally boats arrived in at Vuda Marina - just north of Nadi where they were welcomed with a wonderful song from the staff which brought a tear to many eyes. It was a relief for everyone to be in safe after what had been a bit of a challenging passage and it was lovely to spend some time with them hearing all about the trip. The group had reasonably sporty conditions when they left Whangārei at the beginning of July. The brisk southerly carried them north quickly but it came with some uncomfortable seas. About 3 days in they reached the middle of the high and had a couple of days of motoring on a calm ocean, before the trade winds kicked in for their final few days, moderate winds combined with a high swell and confused sea made this last part of the passage a bit tiring. There were a few issues along the way with three boats reporting getting sea water in their fuel - most likely coming in through the fuel tank breather. One boat had issues with a propeller shaft falling out - thankfully on the calm day and it was able to be repaired, another had a small electrical fire, some had alternator issues and another a broken forestay. Two boats stopped at Minerva and had a wonderful couple of days exploring there.
Overall I was really pleased with how well prepared all the rally boats were. Yes breakages can happen, but if you know your boat, have got the right tools, and spares on board, you can keep calm and get the job done. Thanks too to Peter Mott - our Passage Guardian who is also on watch for all the boats that sign up to use his service on the passage. He is an extra pair of eyes for me, helping with the tracking and is a very useful person to have on hand if things go wrong. We spend a lot of time focusing on getting your vessel, your crew and you ready for a long coastal or offshore voyage with our Cruising Preparation Workshops. We've got a social night coming up at Gulf Harbour Yacht Club, a webinar on boat Mechanical & Electrical essentials, another webinar presented by the organisers of a rally in the Maldives, and there is still time to get a flight and room booked if you'd like to join us up in Fiji for Regatta week! The Coastal Classic have also announced that they've got a rally division in their iconic event and entries are now open for the Solo Trans Tasman Race too. We are also partnering with Down Under Rally to run an Oz to NZ Rally over the summer. More details on all of the above can be found in the newsletter. I'd like to thank the Pacific Rally participants for letting me share their amazing photographs of their adventures with you, and also thank everyone who helped to take part in the Musket Cove beach clean up this week. Yachting NZ Excellence Awards From national accomplishments through to world titles, New Zealand sailors continue to excel which will make the job of the judges a difficult one when they meet to decide the winners at the 2022 Aon Yachting Excellence Awards. Nominations for this year's awards have opened and there have already been a number of notable achievements in the nomination period (September 1, 2021-August 31, 2022). Last year Emirates Team New Zealand picked up the big prize, the Orbit World Travel Sailor of the Year award, for the fifth time since the award was first handed out in 1963. The awards recognise achievements at all levels of the sport, as well as the work done by individuals behind the scenes. Solo Trans-Tasman Challenge 2023 Following the postponement of the 2022 Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge due to the unpredictable end of COVID, the race committee has now made the decision to start the 14th race of this historical Southern hemisphere event on 9 April 2023, 13:00hrs. Entries Welcome Provisional entries are welcome now. The closing date for provisional entries is 31st August 2022. There are currently three skippers entered with expressions of interest from 11 other Australian skippers and 13 from New Zealand skippers. There are three divisions: Adventure class – Monohull; Adventure class - Multihull and IRC. Line honours is awarded the Sir Francis Chichester Trophy. Ray White Trans-Tasman Link The Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge has been an inspirational link between New Zealand and Australia for more than 50 years, so it’s fitting that our new major sponsor also has TransTasman links. Second to the OSTAR (Observer Singlehanded Trans Atlantic Race) from Plymouth, UK to Rhode Island, USA. It's the only race of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The 2023 race will cover 1240 nautical miles. True vs Apparent Wind
If you're hanging out at any yacht club bar, reading your instruments or talking about sail trim, then chances are you've heard people talking about things like true wind speed and apparent wind angle. Well what does all that mean anyway? What is True Wind? Imagine you are standing still in a paddock. There is a light breeze of 5 knots coming from the north. This is the true wind speed and the true wind angle or direction. It is the actual speed of the wind as it passes over the land or surface of the sea. It is also the apparent wind as this is the same wind that you are feeling when you are standing still. What is Apparent Wind? Imagine you are still in the paddock with the 5 knot northerly, and you start running north at 5 knots. You are now 'feeling' 10 knots of wind. The 5 knots of true wind, plus the fact that you are running at 5 knots - gives you 10 knots of 'apparent wind'. It isn't actually blowing 10 knots but because you are running that fast in to the wind that is what you feel. If however you run south - with the wind behind you, and you run at 5 knots - i.e. the same speed as the wind, then you will feel no apparent wind at all. Apparent wind is a combination of wind direction and the direction and speed of the moving object. Why do we need to know this? It is important to understand the difference between true and apparent wind for a number of reasons. Weather forecasts will give you the true wind speed and direction. This will also determine the sea state. When you are sailing your vessel, you will be wanting to set a sail plan based on the apparent wind. The wind we feel on our face is the same wind that the sails feel. So we sail to the apparent wind, and not to the true wind and then we can also take advantage of apparent wind to sail faster. For example if you are going to be sailing down wind in 25kts, and your boat speed with your spinnaker up is 10kts speed over the ground, the actual wind hitting your sails is the equivalent of just 15 kts (25kts - 10kts = 15kts). However if you turn around and head upwind and your upwind boat speed is 6kts, then the apparent wind feels much stronger like 31 knots! (25kts+6kts = 31kts). Apparent wind speed is entirely dependent on how fast you are travelling and at what angle to the true wind speed. True wind speed helps you to forecast the sea state, but your direction of travel will help determine how you will experience this wind. Reading Your Instruments Modern instruments are quickly able to measure apparent wind speed and, by a simple calculation based upon the vessel’s speed and direction they will instantly inform us of the true and apparent wind speed. However, it’s important to make sure your instruments are calibrated and regularly checked, otherwise the information you will receive will be of little use. Sailing with Apparent Wind You might have noticed on the Americas Cup & SailGP foiling boats that they sail everywhere with their sails sheeted in the entire time. The faster they go the apparent wind angle decreases and moves further forward as the apparent wind speed increases. Imagine you are back in the paddock with the 5 knot northerly blowing. If you start running east at 5 knots, the apparent wind speed will feel like it is coming from the north east. If you run faster - like 10 knots, the wind angle will move forward to be coming at you directly from the east - or right on the nose. Apparent wind can also be dramatically affected by changes in the tidal stream. Sailing with the tide will increase your boat speed over the ground and with it, apparent wind. So when it comes to really using the boat effectively you must always trim the sails according to the apparent wind speed and angle, not the true wind. So in summary, the difference between true wind and apparent wind will always depend on our course, and its strength will be different with a tailwind or crosswind. Plus, it changes depending on the speed at which we sail. During the voyage, we don’t change power depending on the direction of the real wind (according to the weather and other influences) but also the apparent wind, which is related to our course and speed, which is constantly changing. Hypothermia When you're sailing around New Zealand in winter, (or in summer too for that matter!) there is a risk that if you or your crew get too cold you might end up with Hypothermia. Mild hypothermia starts when the body temperature is between 32-35C. It is important to catch people when they have mild symptoms as they can quickly deteriorate. When their body temperature reaches 32C they often stop shivering completely. This is a sign that they require emergency medical help as soon as possible. Prevention The best strategy is to prevent hypothermia occurring in the first place. Ensure your crew are dressed correctly and protected from the weather. On cold nights in poor conditions, shorten the watches to give people less time being outside exposed to the elements. Have a dodger to protect the crew from the wind, rain and waves. Get an autohelm so crew can keep watch from a sheltered position without having to stand at the helm for long periods. Crew members should invest in some decent wet weather gear, sea boots, thick socks, thermal underclothing, gloves, scarf or neck warmer and a warm hat. Try to stay dry, and when you go below to rest, change in to some dry thermals and have a nice warm sleeping bag to get in to. Tell your skipper if you are feeling cold.
Symptoms of Hypothermia In cold conditions, keep a close watch on your crew. Watch for signs of: Feeling cold Shivering Slurring speech, confusion, memory loss Muscle stiffness Pale skin Shallow fast breathing Numbness in hands & feet Exhaustion and drowsiness Possible loss of consciousness Weak pulse Dialated pupils Death
Hypothermia continued... Treatment If you suspect a crew member has hypothermia, here is how you should treat them. Warm them up SLOWLY Do NOT give them any alcoholic drinks Do NOT rub them - if they are wet - dry them carefully Do NOT put them in a hot shower or bath Go inside & lay them down Remove wet clothes Wrap them in blankets – and warm dry clothes hats, gloves, scarves, socks – warm clothing Warm their core first (not hands & feet) wrap hotties in a towel – do not apply directly to the skin Give warm sweet fluids – avoid alcohol and caffeine Monitor them constantly until they warm up - this could take hours If unconscious lay them in the recovery position and call for help Monitor them - check pulse, breathing and consciousness Your Tasks This Week Assess your cockpit. Do you have adequate protection from the elements? Is there any way this could be improved? Are your berths watertight? Do you have nice dry mattresses, sleeping bags & bedding? If you are a crew member - how good is your wet weather gear? If sailing in cold conditions you need sea boots, decent socks, thermal leggings and top, mid-layer jerseys, gloves, neck warmer and a warm beanie. Keep an eye on other crew members and take extra care in cold conditons

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs? By Sarah Curry of Hydrovane International Marine
The Hydrovane is by far the best investment we have made on LeeAnn so far. It really saved our bacon out there. If we didn’t have it, I honestly don’t know what we would’ve done. As you know, our rudder tube failed while at sea and our only option was to drop our main rudder as it was causing too much stress on the tube. Then sail home 550 miles with the Hydrovane rudder only. The Hydrovane quite literally saved us and our boat. We specifically decided on the Hydrovane because of the fact that it has it’s own rudder!! There are many windvanes out there but a lot of them work by steering the boats own rudder. With the Hydrovane, you lock off your wheel and the Hydrovane does all the work, saving wear and tear on your boats steering system which is a huge plus! We bought ours at the Seattle boat show in 2019 from Will and Sarah Curry, the Hydrovane company’s owner/ operators. Their customer service was incredible from the ordering process to installation help and advice on use. We ended up becoming great friends! We finally met up with Will and Sarah in Barra de Navidad Mexico a couple months ago while they were cruising on their boat. Will even made it a point to come over and make sure our Hydrovane was in correct adjustment. The one piece of advice he gave us that we wish we would’ve taken was, GET A TILLER PILOT! Even if you have a great electric autopilot and backups, that isn’t going to help you if you lose your rudder. Jamie and I had to handsteer the Hydrovane rudder 12 hrs a day each for 5 days. Not fun! A tiller pilot could’ve done most of that work for us. We will never go to sea again without a Hydrovane, tiller pilot for the vane, and a small drogue. (A drogue to aid in rudderless steering). Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001. Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years.
