South Island Rally How about a summer sailing adventure?

Upcoming Events Sailing the Maldives Become a Member of Island Cruising & Get Great Discounts from Our Sponsors!

From the helm The Pacific Rally 2023 is almost over, with our final group of boats about to head for home. I’ve had such an amazing time over the last six months getting to know the 93 boats and their crews who’ve been cruising with us in the South Pacific this season. There have been some pretty amazing things happen on this years rally, and I am super excited to let you know that the rally has won a Yachting New Zealand Excellence Award for the amazing camaraderie that has been shown both between the boats and with the locals in the Islands. We’ve currently got boats scattered all over the South Pacific. Some in Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu & New Caledonia coming home next week, some on passage, some have headed on to Australia, others have ventured further afield to Indonesia, and a few have parked their boats up on the hard at Vuda marina in Fiji for the summer, so they can head back next season, some have headed east and are bound for French Polynesia, some are already home. This flexibility is one of the reasons that people love our rallies, but its a major exercise keeping track of everyone, thanks to the awesome team at PredictWind, I can quickly see where most of the boats are at any given time using our rally tracker.

The rally tracker is fantastic when things start to get a bit crazy - such as Cyclone Lola which developed scarily early this season (last week), and threatened to bear down on some of the rally participants in Vanuatu, and then connected in with a low pressure system in the Tasman to create some pretty average weather in the Pacific and up North over the last few days. This system was picked up early last week by our amazing weather routers and watch-dog - Peter Mott - Passage Guardian, who keeps a close eye on all the rally boats on passage for me. We were able to give some advice to the boats on the way to get a wriggle on to be in port safely prior to the bad weather coming through, and thankfully they were, but we have all been quite concerned for the non-rally boats who got caught out at sea and with no way of contacting them to ensure they knew it was coming, or to give them some tips on possible strategies for them to consider. Over the weekend a solo French sailor has been rescued. I really hope the others are ok too.

If you are an international cruiser who has just arrived in New Zealand - welcome to our beautiful country! (and sorry about the weather!) If you’d like any tips on sailing around New Zealand or would like to know what great events are coming up or get some excellent discounts from our sponsors - please check out our website and become a member! I am also heading to Australia in November, and am doing a couple of presentations in Sydney - one at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, and another at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on the 15th & 16th of November. If you are based in Australia I’d love to see you there! It was awesome to catch up with lots of the Island Cruising community at the Coastal Classic last weekend. It was my first Coastal Classic and lots of fun to be on board Nautilass a brand new Beneteau First 36, with a really fun crew. I also had a wonderful time in Whangārei at the inaugural Maritime Festival which was a huge success. It was my final Yachting New Zealand board meeting in October. It has been an honour to serve on the board for the last six and a half years. All the Yachting NZ board members are volunteers and so much work goes in behind the scenes to keep our National Sporting Organisation running. Their team of staff are incredibly dedicated to our sport and the sailing lifestyle, and encouraging new people to get involved. In other exciting news - we’ve got a new website coming soon with heaps of cool new features for members including all the online learning and resources to help you prepare for a long coastal or offshore voyage. A new place for CrewSeekers and skippers to connect with crew, a cool new online store a directory for all our partners & sponsors and heaps of other awesome features. I can’t wait to show you around when it gets up and running! More info to come. Please watch this space or become a member now to ensure you don’t miss any updates. Happy sailing!

Cheers Viki

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs? By Sarah Curry of Hydrovane International Marine

If you sail with an autopilot, you'll already know how awesome they are, especially when you sail for long distances short handed, however as with all electronics on board, you need to consider the power demands on running things 24/7, and what your strategy would be if the equipment failed or if you were unable to generate the power to run it. Steering issues can and do happen, so having a back up emergency steering solution is essential for going offshore. A Hydrovane is an awesome solution. It uses no power, is a back up for if your steering or rudder fails, it is silent, stylish and can be installed on most vessels. Check out the Hydrovane options here.

NZ $1,295,000 Ready to go to the Islands! OCEANUS JOE is the sought-after Owner's version of the Leopard 43 Power Catamaran. Penned by Netherlands' Simonis Voogd Design, the Leopard 43 Powercat is the synthesis of various features - among them the sleek hulls with knife-like bows, a long waterline length, minimal drag, plenty of buoyancy fore and aft, and engines positioned relatively far forward. With a shallow draft and modest wetted area the hulls reward owners with slippery fuel-efficiency - the fine bows slide through the water with an easy motion. The easy motion is aided by a long waterline. Designed with plumb bows and long boarding platforms aft, the LWL is just shy of the 13m LOA. Each hull carries hard chines just above the waterline. This extra width creates more volume for accommodation inside, and also improves buoyancy in less than ideal sea conditions. Where many cats have their engines located in the stern, the 43's are mounted further forward - a happier weight distribution to minimise porpoising or 'hobby-horsing'. Discover the undiscovered: 173 resorts among the 2000 isles Sail to the Maldives, a popular tourist destination, popularly known as the sunny side of life, the tropical paradise, and the dream holiday destination. Marco Polo, a Venetian trader, and the most famous explorer in history, referred to the Maldives as the "Flower of the Indies." Maldives is considered world wonder by reef scientists and is home to the seventh-largest reef system in the world, making up around 3% of the total coral reef surface. The formation of the islands in the Maldives was so intriguing that the word "Atoll" was coined from the Maldivian word "Atholhu" and gained popularity following the publication of Charles Darwin's first monograph in 1842, which presented the theory on the formation of coral reefs and atolls. Interestingly, the Maldives has a literacy rate of over 97%, which facilitates easy communication with the locals. Although there is a noticeable dialect accent in the southern Atolls, "Dhivehi", the native language of the Maldives, is spoken across the country. A oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to see the local lifestyles and dialect variations in the Maldives presents itself during the upcoming Savaadheeththa Dhathuru. You may hear the gentle drawl of accent ebb and flows in the dialects of Laamu Atoll, Huvadhu Atoll, and Addu Atoll as the Rally sails from the Capital Atoll to the southernmost atolls. Maldives is a dream for anyone who wishes to live and work remotely on an island for the rest of their life. It is more than just a vacation spot with opulent high-end resorts. Many undiscovered sandbanks exist in the archipelago of the 2000 isles. There are about 200 luxurious resorts, featuring everything from beach villas to underwater restaurants and underwater spas. For those who wish to experience the real Maldives on an affordable budget, there are more than 800 guesthouses dispersed throughout 200 inhabited islands. This proves that Maldives offers something for everyone. You may enjoy a white beach and crystal-clear sea by choosing to stay on a small island that has guesthouse accommodations. 17% of return visitors to the Maldives in 2022 shared their holiday satisfaction and the desire to discover more of the islands.

Travelling to the Maldives is an adventure. Flying to these isolated islands and then using a speedboat for the inter-island transfer is the most convenient method to get there. Book window seats on your international, domestic, and seaplane flights to be mesmerized by the bird's eye view of the garland of islands where each passing Atoll is more beautiful than the last. If you're an ocean lover or a marine enthusiast, spend some time on a liveaboard to take in the vibrant underwater sea life in the Maldives or obtain a certificate for successfully crossing the equator by flying the Maldives National Carrier Maldivian. It is true that in the Maldives, lounging and lazing in restful splendor doing absolutely nothing at all may mean absolutely everything as you make wonderful holiday memories of relaxed rest and recreation. Walking down the beach or staring out at the vast ocean may not seem like much. Enjoying a stroll along the natural walkways of the shallow lagoons during the day or during a vibrant sunset will leave you and your partner with an unforgettable sensation of walking in the middle of the ocean. A walk to truly remember for the rest of your life. The Maldives' natural walkways are popular with tourists and aerial photographers. Maldives also boasts beautiful wetland or mangrove areas, which can leave visitors in awe. Bandaara Kilhi, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the Maldives, and one of the two freshwater lakes on the island of Fuvahmulah are a few eco-rich locations you can visit in instead of private resorts. Fuvahmulah also has a nature park with swimming, canoeing, and pedal boating for visitors. "Paree Fengandu," which translates to "fairy pond,"is another freshwater pond on Gan Island in the Laamu Atoll and it is associated with many folklore tales. Without seeing the "Paree Fengandu," you have not truly visited Gan Island. Noonu Atoll Kendhikulhidhoo Eco Park, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Dhigemahkoda Nature Park at Hoandedhdhoo, Addu Atoll, and Mathikilhi Eco Garden in Hulhumeedhoo island are popular for mud bathing. Addu Nature Park on Hithadhoo Island are incomparable natural wonders that are also protected areas in the Maldives, allowing you to get back in touch with nature.

Every island has its own distinctive characteristics; for example, the whale shark island Dhigurah is in the south Ari Atoll, the green sea turtle island Gaadhoo is in the Laamu Atoll, and the tiger shark island Fuvahmulah is in the Gnaviyani Atoll. While Kolamaafushi in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll is a fishing island where you may learn about the way of life of a Maldivian fisherman, Muli in the Meemu Atolls is well known for its surf break locations. By visiting farms or agricultural islands like Thoddoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, you can get a taste of the local way of life. A day excursion to the capital, which may be part of your holiday package if staying at an upscale resort, won't provide the same insight into Maldivian culture as the Maldives Yacht Rally. It is a never-ending summer in the Maldives, from rising early to watch the fishermen leave in their boats, known locally as “Dhoani”, for fishing, to the ladies sweeping the islands before preparing breakfast, and from discovering how the children and teenagers are constantly at the beach or harbour enjoying a great swim, to families enjoying picnics and sunset BBQs at the beach, to sunset fishing. Sign up now on the official event website for the third edition of Savaadheeththa Dhathuru to discover the undiscovered sunny side of life, to explore the hidden jewels, to swim in the sea to witness the vibrant marine life, experience the authentic Maldivian life and to experience the friendly hospitality of the locals. For more information, please visit the official website of the Maldives yacht rally: https://maldivesyachtrally.com/

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001. Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations. When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again. That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made. Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising. He put it to the test for five years. He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets. Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers. One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank. Island Cruising NZ members get a $300 discount on a new water maker from Open Ocean! Check out their website
