From the helm

It's all go round here at Island Cruising HQ! We've got the 2024 Pacific Rally registrations open, and have got ten boats signed up already, plus International boats joining us to sail to New Zealand this summer, as well as the South Island Rally now open too. There are heaps of fun times and adventures ahead!

It is starting to feel a bit more spring like here in Christchurch, and it is nice to see some more snow on the mountains, but I can't wait to get back up to Fiji early next month to join in with the fun and festivities at the Musket Cove Regatta week which is held every year in September.

It is the 39th edition of this iconic event and I am excited to be catching up with some of the Pacific Rally participants and meeting the International sailors who are heading south with us to NZ at the end of the season.

We've currently got rally boats in Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia The beauty of the Pacific Rally is that you still have all the support and backup, connection with the other cruisers on the rally and you can also choose your own destinations and dates. The flexibility is there to do your own thing, or to catch up with the other rally boats along the way

We've now got 89 boats on the Pacific rally and the support they give to one another is incredible. Anything from a social cup of coffee, bonfire on the beach, helping fix each others boats, delivering parts with their crew flying in and out, sharing their tips about anchorages and routes between islands, right through to some dramatic rescues when things don't all go to plan.

The camaraderie between the participants is something I am so proud to be a part of

As well as helping one another, you'll also find rally participants out helping the locals too. Fibreglass repairs to the village boats, donating items to the local school, distributing glasses donated by the Lions Club, and even just buying local goods, sharing a fish they've caught or taking a tour. For some remote villages, the visiting yachties are one of their only sources of income, and the friendships you make with the local people along the way are priceless

Of course we also like to ensure we do the right thing, ensuring that we obey the local protocols such as the sevusevu in Fiji, coutume in New Caledonia or simply going ashore to introduce yourself and ask for permission to stay for a few days in other countries. Taking care with the environment, using holding tanks, removing all our rubbish, and treading lightly along the way. It is all a part of the rally culture which I think cannot be underestimated

The majority of sailors are conscious about doing the right thing, however not everyone is careful and respectful of the cultures, environment and regulations of the places they visit. We've come across a few people on our travels who don't appear to care about leaving a good impression and there is a risk that all cruisers get tarred with the same brush so to speak. Ensuring that cruisers maintain a good reputation and are welcomed back year on year is vitally important for everyone to aim for

If you are keen to explore more of our stunning country and sail the South Island this summer, we have also got the South Island Rally ready to launch. There will also be a webinar on Monday night. All the details are here.

I will be up in Auckland next week to launch the Pacific Rally 2024 at Devonport Yacht Club on Tuesday night I'd love to catch up and meet you, so if you are around please do come along for a drink and a chat

If you can't make it to Devonport, I'll also be launching all the plans in Christchurch on Thursday night or on an online webinar the following week. Check out all the details later in the newsletter or on our website here.

In other news, I am very excited to have been nominated for the Lux Global Nautical Tourism Awards for 2023. The fishing exploits of the Pacific Rally participants was also featured in the NZ Fishing Magazine August edition - grab yourself a copy to have a read! I've also been invited to attend the Whangārei Maritime Festival in October which is shaping up to be a great event. I am also hoping to race in the Coastal Classic after that so I hope to see you along the way.

If you are a marine business and keen to promote your products or services to all the incoming cruisers as well as the people preparing to go offshore next year, we have marketing opportunities to suit every budget! Please get in touch.

If you are going to be up in Musket Cove for Regatta - I look forward to catching up with you there, or at one of the rally launches in Auckland, Christchurch or online in the next week or so.

Happy sailing!

Cheers Viki

AS A CRUISING DESTINATION, AUSTRALIA HAS IT ALL!

Tranquil rivers, inland waterways, the iconic Sydney Harbour, the remote and seldom visited pristine atolls and reefs of Queenslands

Coral Sea Marine Park, the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, the 100 magic miles of the Whitsunday Islands, the spectacular wilderness areas of Tasmania, and the Kimberley region of Western Australia exploring Australia’s vast coastline by yachts offers incredible diversity.

As cruisers who have experienced much of what Australia has to offer, we believe that not visiting and spending time cruising in Australia would be a travesty. That is why the Down Under Rally encourages and assists members of the international cruising community to sail to Australia and experience all that our Land Down Under has to offer.

Find

out why Sailing To Australia with the Go West Rally makes sense even if you are 'not rally people'.

New Zealand’s festival on the water is back in 2024

The Auckland Boat Show will return in 2024, bringing a festival on the water to the heart of central Auckland.

New Zealanders’ love affair with all things marine will return in 2024, with dates for the country’s largest on water boat show released. The Auckland Boat Show fills downtown Auckland with marinas showcasing the best of New Zealand-built boats and the latest international innovations in marine. Set to run from 14 to 17 March 2024, it’s positioned to form part of a plethora of on-water activities in 2024’s summer, including regattas and festivals which celebrate Auckland’s identity as the City of Sails.

The show has become known for its large marina display spreading through Jellicoe Harbour, the space flanking the former America’s Cup bases. Set in the heart of downtown Auckland’s vibrant Wynyard Quarter, the show cements the relationship between this traditionallymaritime neighbour-hood and the modern meeting point it has become, connecting Aucklanders to the ocean.

On-land exhibits will complement the on-water component of the show, taking over the Viaduct Event Centre once again in central Auckland’s buzzing Wynyard Quarter.

The Auckland Boat Show is known for its unique sea trial area; the only one of its kind in a New Zealand boat show, sea trials form a crucial component of the event. With the show set in the Waitematā Harbour manufacturers and brokers are able to demonstrate vessels in their element to buyers, allow-ing them to bring performance, sea-kindliness and handling to the forefront. The show’s dates see it take its place as part of a summer of marine events supported by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. It will form part of a festival of harbour-based events, creating a celebratory atmosphere with the New Zealand Millennium Cup superyacht regatta to be raced from 23 to 26 February in Auckland, and Sail GP coming to Auckland’s waters from 23 to 24 March. “With the show staged during daylight savings, in New Zealand’s beautiful summer weather, gives us the chance to promote the lifestyle boating offers,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook.

A new web-based app called the Marine Vessel Portal (MVP) has been developed to help New Zealand boat owners, marinas and councils reduce the risk of marine pest incursions. The MVP is already a key tool in marine biosecurity management, recording surveillance activity, findings and the presence of marine pests in bays and harbours from Northland to Bay of Plenty. It also records information about the regional hull surveillance programmes, including biofouling levels and pest species found on boats during routine inspections. By signing up to the MVP boat owners and marina operators can be empowered to better manage their biofouling risk.

The Portal will include:

Information about a boat’s recent hull maintenance or cleaning can be entered into the MVP by boat owners, maintenance contractors, haul outs and dive companies. The MVP also contains results from hull surveys undertaken by council marine biosecurity teams in Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

When a vessel arrives in a new location marina staff will be able to see when a boat was cleaned, its antifoul coatings, and details of recent inspections. This, along with talking with the boat owner about where a vessel has traveled, will help them decide if a boat presents a marine biosecurity risk or not.

How to get started

Boat owners can claim their boat in the system by entering some basic information about their vessel, including its name, description, usual location and their contact details. Uploading a photo is also helpful.

Once submitted, our team will work to match it up with a boat already in the system and ask the boat owner to confirm the match - or they will set up a new entry if needed.

With access to the MVP, owners can see details of past dive inspections of their vessel including any the level of fouling and marine pest species found. They can also add their own information about their vessel’s antifouling maintenance

Participating marina operators can view this information, negating the need for vessel owners to carry/email documents before arriving at a marina or in some cases, between regions.

The Marine Vessel Portal is an app developed and shared by Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Waikato Regional Council. These councils are empowered to collect information about vessels by the Biosecurity Act, but participation by boat owners is optional.

When a boat owner claims their boat they will need to provide permission for the identity of their vessel to be confirmed with their marina operator (if applicable) and will have an opportunity to review and accept a Privacy Agreement. A two-step authentication process will protect the integrity of vessel data.

Click here to sign yourself up to the portal.

Learn More about Marine Biosecurity

This year's marine biosecurity webinar series will focus on two key challenges we face in the fight against marine pests: funding critical marine biosecurity work, and filling the gaps in our clean hull framework. There is also a special session for council and agency staff.

These webinars are designed to prompt conversation, discussion and broader understanding of key issues involved and we encourage industry to attend.

Check out the upcoming Marine Biosecurity webinars here.

Maldives: A small country with a big heart

3.2028° N, 73.2207°, these global positioning system coordinates point to the second smallest country in Asia. A faraway beckoning island paradise boasting brilliant white sandy beaches and dazzling turquoise waters. The Maldives is an archipelago loved globally for its experienced fifty-year tourism sector. At the World Travel Awards 2022, the Maldives won the prestigious title of the World's Leading Destination for three consecutive years. Undoubtedly the Maldives is a tourist destination that offers world leading hospitality like no other.

Prior to arrival, tourists' perceptions of the Maldives are mostly limited to its luxurious resorts; but once they arrive and interact with the local community their world opens up to fantastic new opportunities. One amazing way to discover and travel up close through these pearls of the Indian Ocean and to meet the people is to sail in a Maldives yacht rally. The warm hospitality of the Maldives is so remarkable it is well recorded in history and is one of the most valuable rewards to all travelers even today. The friendliness of the people leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of all who visit long after their trip is over.

During the first-ever Maldives Yacht Rally, one of the sailor Ms. Renee Lynn Whitetaker made the following statement: “The Maldivian people have been some of the most welcoming and warm, friendly, and happy people. All you girls are so giggly and so fun, I don’t think we ever felt more welcomed in any other country than we do in Maldives” reflecting the friendliness of Maldivians.

3.2028° N, 73.2207° E

Mr. Mark Philip Norman provided an insight into how Maldivians welcome guests to the islands by demonstrating the culture and traditions during the maiden Maldives Yacht Rally by stating, “In each island, people make me feel as if I am a visiting prince. Where I get a royal welcome with flags, drums, singing, and dancing”. In a similar vein, Mr. Kennet Powers used the statement “It’s a small country with a big heart”, to express the authenticity of Maldivians. These are the shared sentiments of the more than 1.6 million tourists who traveled to the Maldives in 2022, and they reflect how visitors will likely feel in the future.

MITDC expects the Savaadheeththa Dhathuru Maldives Yacht Rally 2024 to be far greater i h h f d h ld fl ki h li l i l d di h

The Savaadheeththa Dhathuru's third edition will start on February 10 in K. Kudagiri.

Afterwards, V. Fulidhoo, M. Muli, L. Gan, L. Fonadhoo, L.Baresdhoo. GA. Kolamaafushi, GDH. Hoan’dehdho, S. Gan, and S. Hithadhoo. The fifth stop on the journey is L. Baresdhoo, one of the Star Wars Islands where the blockbuster movie Star Wars Rogue One and all the scenes of Planet Scarif were filmed. The itinerary for the third edition is packed with exciting activities, with the voyage ending on the Maldives' southernmost atoll. The opportunity to visit these islands will provide sailors the chance to dive, experience the natural beauty of Maldives, engage in activities with locals, observe island life, and taste local food.

Our unique Savaadheeththa Passport is one of the most significant mementos that rally participants can take back to their homes as proof and bragging rights that they have travelled and conquered the boundless oceans of the Maldives including many islands and not just one resort hotel. Each sailor will obtain a stamp in their Savaadheetha passport from the council of the islands as soon as they arrive, serving the same purpose as a regular passport but so much more valuable for the symbolic value of supporting local business and local island growth through travel and patronage of services.

All sailors can now register on the event's official website for the third Savaadheeththa Dhathuru. The Maldives is a paradise on Earth for all, and there is no better way to explore and experience "Maldivian life" than this expedition by sailing through the Maldives the way our ancestors braved the high seas. We anticipate greater success from the third edition. Join the rally and receive a warm welcome from Maldivians to truly experience the Maldives.

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs?

If you sail with an autopilot, you'll already know how awesome they are, especially when you sail for long distances short handed, however as with all electronics on board, you need to consider the power demands on running things 24/7, and what your strategy would be if the equipment failed or if you were unable to generate the power to run it.

Steering issues can and do happen, so having a back up emergency steering solution is essential for going offshore.

A Hydrovane is an awesome solution It uses no power, is a back up for if your steering or rudder fails, it is silent, stylish and can be installed on most vessels

Check out the Hydrovane options here.

TKAMALII is a magnificent yacht and represents the ultimate conclusion of traditional timber boat construction The current owners have sailed around the world on many yachts, and the yacht is without doubt the most comfortable, sea kindly, sturdy ocean-going vessel they have ever sailed With only a handful of owners in her life she has been the love and passion of all who have owned her Featuring a deep, full keel hull form for enhanced windward performance for this deceptively fast and exceptionally comfortable cruiser. The present owners purchased the vessel in California and after major hull restoration, in 2013 cruised the Pacific to her new life in New Zealand where upgrading has continued in between use as a family cruiser with the finest of pedigrees. A detailed history is available on request. More information here.

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001 Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made

Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising He put it to the test for five years He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank

Island Cruising NZ members get a $300 discount on a new water maker from Open Ocean!
