From the helm

Well what a wonderful event SailGP was! The weather was perfect, incredible sailing conditions, the dolphins were happy, all the spectator boats and people on shore had some fantastic views, my on water team and our dedicated volunteers and helpers were superstars and I am pleased to report it was a huge success.

I am particularly proud of the Inspire program which engaged with many parts of the community, including all the yacht clubs and local youth who were involved as well as a brilliant Breaking Boundaries women ' s event which you can watch here.

I've just been up in wonderful Whangārei to wave off the boats who are sailing off up to Japan, to catch up with some of our amazing Island Cruising sponsors, to meet up with some of the Pacific Rally participants and to join in the Ocean Cruising Club BBQ.

In April I am participating in a conference with the South Pacific Sailing Network with various stakeholders from around the Pacific who all work together to promote yachting in the South Pacific.

We are going to be debriefing on the COVID border closures, the impact that had on the cruising community and ways that we can grow and develop cruising in the South Pacific in a sustainable way.

I am very conscious of the impact that sailors have on the communities we visit, in both good and bad ways. Things like taking extra care with the environment, being culturally sensitive when visiting different countries and also helping to work together with communities so that we leave a positive impression and benefit to everyone in our wakes

We can all do our bit to ensure that cruisers are continued to be welcomed by the locals going forward

All the yachts heading up to the Pacific this year are now doing their final preparations, getting their Cat 1 certificates signed off, documentation completed, provisions on board and keeping a close eye on the weather too

There are lots of other people who help me out with these things behind the scenes, and who are experts in their field. People like Angus from Yachting NZ, Patricia and David from Gulf Harbour Radio, Peter from Passage Guardian Nick, Keryn & the team from Predict Wind, David from Bato Flags, Bob & Bruce our weather gurus, all the marinas and local tourism departments and our port officers up in the Pacific, Richard from Rocket Guides, and our fantastic sponsors of the event - new ones on board this month are Marsden Cove marina and Line 7 Sailing gear. With all their support we are able to provide some excellent deals and great content for our rally packs. Thank you all so much.

Also the people participating in the rallies are a wealth of information and their willingness to share their knowledge with others to help support the group as a whole is heartwarming.

We've got about 13 families and 31 children on the rally this year - I know they are all going to have lots of fun sharing some adventures together.

By the time the next newsletter comes out, the Pacific rally will be just about to depart with the first group aiming to head away early May, and then there are some others departing slightly later, as well as quite a few members who are starting to make their way across the Pacific from Panama as we speak!

We've also wrapped up the South Island Rally which has been underway since the end of December. We had 33 boats register for the rally and many of them made it all the way round the South Island visiting Marlborough, Fiordland, Stewart Island and Banks Peninsula along the way. Lots of awesome people and fun times

We've also got a great group of crew members keen to get up to the Pacific next year, so if you are looking for crew or keen to get some experience, check out the CrewSeeker page on our website here.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Thanks for all your support.

Cheers Viki

Offshore Medical Training: Why It's Essential for Cruising and Boat Owners

For sailors, cruisers, and yachties, the importance of offshore medical training cannot be overstated. Having the knowledge to administer first aid and basic medical care on board your boat can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Whether you’re heading out on an overnight voyage or a long-distance offshore trip, it is essential to make sure you have the knowledge and skills necessary to handle any medical situations that may arise.

In this article, we'll discuss why it's essential for all boaties to have a minimal level of understanding when it comes to medical care at sea.

Why is Offshore Medical Training Important?

Offshore medical training is important because it provides boaters with the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in a medical emergency while out on the water. Being able to respond quickly in an emergency situation is paramount.

A basic knowledge of first aid along with additional information such as how to administer CPR can help save lives when there are no other options available. Additionally, having this type of training can also prevent minor illnesses or injuries from becoming more serious if not treated promptly.

What is Coastal & Offshore Medical Training?

This type of medical training covers a wide range of topics related to first aid or advanced life support treatments for those onboard or on nearby boats. The goal is to help boaties gain the knowledge and skills needed to keep themselves safe from potential harm due to illness or injury while on the water.

How Can I Get Certified?

In order to receive certification in coastal and offshore medical training, you need to attend a classroom course. The coastal medic course is a 2 day course and is the prerequisite to offshore medic. These courses provide comprehensive instruction in a variety of topics including CPR, first aid, patient assessment, shock management, wound care, bone fractures, dislocation care and much more.

After completing these courses successfully, students will receive official certification which is valid for two years after completion date so it’s important to stay up-to-date with your certifications if you plan on spending lots of time at sea!

There are four courses that Coastguard Boating Education offer which are beneficial for any boating family but especially if you are planning to take the vessel offshore:

1. In Water Survival | 1 day classroom course

This course is intended to promote safety amongst recreational boaties. The course focuses on safety equipment which should be carried on any vessel. The purpose is to understand the potential risks aboard a small vessel, the best safety equipment to carry, how it functions, and how to properly use it. This course includes a practical, in-water component.

2. Coastal Medic | 2 day classroom course

An intermediate course for coastal boating within 24 hours of assistance. This course covers modules:

airway, breathing and circulation injury identification stabilisation/treatment evacuation documentation

3. Offshore Medic | 1 day classroom course

An advanced course for offshore skippers and crew to detail the management of medical/trauma emergencies on-board in an offshore marine environment. You will need to have completed the coastal medic to attend this course.

It covers 2 modules; trauma management and medical management. The trauma management covers:

Advanced airway management

Fluid resuscitation

Common on-board injuries

Radio support options

Offshore medical kit content review

The medical management covers:

Medical management

Medical assessment

Symptomatic treatment

Administration of medicines

Advanced wound closure

4. Advanced Sea Survival | 2 day classroom course

A comprehensive course to cater for coastal and offshore crews. Required for Category 1 certificates. The course offers detailed knowledge and practical competence in sea survival techniques and equipment. This course includes a practical, in-water component.

Understanding Emergency Protocols

Along with medical training it is essential that you have an understanding of emergency protocols. Knowing how to make a distress call or contact the Coastguard can be the difference between life and death in a critical situation. Additionally, being able to properly use safety equipment such as flares or life rafts may be necessary in order to survive an accident at sea. It's important for boat owners or operators to know what types of safety gear are required by law (such as personal locator beacons) as well as any other items that might be useful in an emergency situation (such as flashlights or radios).

Heading Offshore?

Offshore medical training is an essential component of any cruising experience or boat ownership journey. If you plan to leave from NZ and travel offshore you will be required to hold a category 1 certification and this can only be gained once you have your offshore medic. Not only does this give you a great knowledge base, you will also have peace of mind knowing that you have all the tools necessary should something unexpected happen while out on the water and nobody wants that! Be sure you are up-to-date with your knowledge and preparedness when heading out on your next voyage!

AidtoVanuatu

In the last few weeks, Vanuatu was badly hit by, not only 2 Tropical Cyclones, but also 1 Earthquake! That is triple bad luck! During Covid, they already suffered a devastating TC, and received little help at the time because of the pandemic and some communities are still trying to recover from then!

Sailors visiting Vanuatu soon are in a unique position to bring necessary supplies to the local communities they visit.

Island Cruising is proud to partner up with The Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey 500, a round-theworld sailing rally, which will visit 7 islands of Vanuatu in May 2023 just a few weeks from now They will be arriving in Vanuatu much earlier than our Pacific Rally this season, and we've offered to help support their efforts to get some much needed items to the people in Vanuatu sooner rather than later

Their fleet of 20 boats already committed to bring emergency relief items like: Family Water filter kits, tool kits, Shelter kits, water storage solutions, solar lights and more that will be donated via Byond Disaster Relief NZ ... But we could do more with your help!

You can still be part of our team helping to support the people in Vanuatu. Please donate whatever you feel like to our campaign so we can purchase more solar lights & water filtration kits. We will send you updates with photos & videos so you can really be part of this mission!

Too often, donations end up feeding a heavy bureaucracy with too little trickling to the people in need :( We are transparent and keep things simple … We will make a video showing our meeting the communities and giving them what we brought from all of us participating in this mission! Link to the videos will be included in our updates The joy and relief we will bring, all together, will be worth any effort & generosity of our part !

This project has the support of Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey 500– Byond Disaster Relief NZIsland Cruising New Zealand (ICNZ) , Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA) – Noonsite – Bay Of Islands Marina in Opua, NZ and others

You can read more about the campaign here on Noonsite.

Please donate whatever you can to the cause here. All proceeds will go towards useful items for the people in Vanuatu.

Rally To Japan

We are excited to announce that the Pacific Rally has been granted permission to run the Lau Group entry this season.

Early July, we will fly the Fijian officials out to Lau where they'll meet boats who will sail across from Tonga to Lau. The benefit of entering at Lau makes the ocean passage much quicker, and more convenient for people wanting to enjoy this special part of Fiji.

Limited spaces available, so please contact info@islandcruising.nz for all the details.

Imagine you are half way between New Zealand and Fiji, and your engine stops working, your electrical system is no longer charging your batteries, you've sprung a leak or your steering system fails.

Would you have the skills and knowledge to be able to troubleshoot the problems and undertake some repairs?

Learning some key techniques, understanding how your systems work together and ensuring you've got the right tools and spare parts on board your vessel can mean you get back underway quicker and prevent issues arising in the first place.

Join Ross Porter's upcoming course to learn more about maintaining and repairing your essential systems on board.

OPPORTUNITY OPPORTUNITY

Cruising the Med

ICNZ members are invited to express their interest in cruising the Med this year for flexible periods during July, August and September of this year. The boat is a Beneteau Oceanis 46 in excellent condition with 3 double cabins and 2 heads with showers plus outdoor shower on the scoop. All bedding supplied as it's too hot for sleeping bags!

Proposal

Easy sailing with day hops discovering little villages around the coast. Precise itinerary TBA but likely to be in Western Med, Spain, France, Italy. Time to be spent exploring interesting places, hanging out in cafes watching the world go by and dining out at local restaurants etc. Swimming off the boat at anchor.

Costs to you are a share of marina fees and food on board and of course your meals ashore but other costs rest with me.

(Just as background, we enjoyed 4 seasons, 2015/2018 on our NZ yacht, Shalimar, sailing around the Med and we became addicted. Hence why we're going back!)

New Zealand marine industry launches luxury yachts and leads innovation

New Zealanders are pushing the envelope with marine innovation. At this year’s Auckland Boat Show, it was an emphatic demonstration of New Zealanders’ quick uptake of big boats and innovative marine products. Central Auckland was transformed into a boater’s paradise with the largest collection of luxury yachts seen in New Zealand, as well as a sea trial marina, and marquees full of New Zealand marine companies after a hiatus of the boat show since 2019. In the on-land section of Jellicoe Harbour formerly filled with America’s Cup bases, rows of trailer boats provided fodder for a public hungry for the boating lifestyle. “Our ticket pre-sale numbers were 50 per cent higher than the previous show, last held in 2019,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook. “We know that New Zealanders are increasingly taking part in boating and the show is reflecting that; with more boats, a greater proportion of large yachts built in New Zealand, greater numbers of luxury boats, and more people through the door.”

A study commissioned by NZ Marine last year showed 1.9 million New Zealanders take part in boating annually, with more than 1,540,000 boats on the water in a $2.9 billion dollar industry which is growing by an estimated 44,810 vessels per year. “The marine industry is New Zealand’s largest non-agricultural, manufacturing industry,” says NZ Marine CEO, Peter Busfield.

“It’s an industry built on high-tech design, industry-led training and passionate people.” New Zealanders are also demonstrating early adoption of sustainable technologies with a number of sustainable brands featuring prominently at the show. Herley Boats’ 34 foot electric catamaran is a striking, muscular power-cat, powered by a hybrid propulsion system. It’s New Zealand’s first locally-produced diesel electric hybrid catamaran for the recreational market with technology which expands the possibilities on how far and for how long the owner can travel. Fellow Kiwi company Sealegs announced the development and release of an electric amphibious tender; its 3.8m electric tender, the 3.8TE.

Whakatane boat builder Legacy Marine, is displaying one of the largest yachts in the show. The striking L70 which was designed and built in Whakatane and is one of the most hotly-anticipated boats in the event. Finished to an exceptionally high standard, the yacht was built for a New Zealand owner and is another demonstration of the appetite for quality - and for large vesselsfrom the New Zealand public.

The Boat Show is New Zealand’s largest on-water display of vessels and takes place in central Auckland’s Jellicoe Harbour. The internationally-acclaimed event is known for its sea trialsallowing those in the market for a new boat to take for-sale vessels straight from downtown Auckland and onto the Waitemata Harbour - as well as hosting New Zealand’s largest collection of luxury vessels, innovative marine launches and annual new releases within a boat show. www.auckland-boatshow.com

Hydrovane What do people say about theirs?

If you sail with an autopilot, you'll already know how awesome they are, especially when you sail for long distances short handed, however as with all electronics on board, you need to consider the power demands on running things 24/7, and what your strategy would be if the equipment failed or if you were unable to generate the power to run it.

Steering issues can and do happen, so having a back up emergency steering solution is essential for going offshore.

A Hydrovane is an awesome solution It uses no power, is a back up for if your steering or rudder fails, it is silent, stylish and can be installed on most vessels

Check out the Hydrovane options here.

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001 Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made

Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising He put it to the test for five years He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank
