Just as the final Pacific Rally boats arrive home, the South Island Rally group begins! We've got 30 boats cruising around our spectacular coastline this summer and finishing up in Lyttelton in March for the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix!

They'll be heading to Abel Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, Fiordland, Stewart Island and finally Banks Peninsula.

I posted off all the rally packs today all sorts of fun things in there including a rally guide, information from Maritime NZ, a magazine from Boating NZ, fishing tackle from Hunting & Fishing, an awesome flag from Bato Flags, food from Radix Nutrition, drinks from Pure, and lots of other great information they'll need for the voyage

I am also doing some work for the SailGP covering off the On Water Operations Role. It is fascinating how much work goes on behind the scenes to organise a big event like this. I'm working with an amazing team and learning lots

The Pacific Rally for 2023 has attracted lots of attention, and we ' ve got a great group of yachts and power boats joining us for some offshore adventures. We are working on some special inclusions such as a special group deal for offshore insurance with our friends from PIC and exclusive check ins at places such as the Lau Group in Fiji, Aneityum in Vanuatu and the Lau Group in New Caledonia. Get in touch if you are interested in joining in.

If you are planning on joining the rally, I recommend you join early to get the most benefit out of all the preparation workshops we ' ve got going. We have already made a start on some of the content and having some social events to connect the rally participants with others heading in their direction

We've also got about six boats so far who are keen to head to French Polynesia so we will put together something for them as well.

This is an exciting destination and there are some awesome sailing events like the Tahiti Pearl Regatta and the Tahiti Moorea Sailing Rendezvous. We've got a webinar planned for early in the New Year for those keen to head in this direction. Everyone else will be bound for Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and even on to Australia and beyond. You are free to choose! We've got heaps more content around that coming soon too.

Why we created SailTies, the Strava for Sailing

Three years ago, Tom and I met working on a recipe sharing platform in Bristol, UK We quickly discovered a shared passion for the ocean, in particular sailing, so we booked an RYA Day Skipper course together Fast forward to a typical March day on The Solent ( ) and we were in our element, but it didn't take long to discover that two important things were missing: 1 2.

Why is a modern way needed?

Like most sailors, we want to capture our time on the water for 3 main reasons: 1. 2. 3.

Reliving our adventures when we're back on land Sharing voyages with family and friends Recording our overall sailing experience

To our surprise, there was no modern way to do this. Sailors try to keep a paper logbook up to date, however those only provide very limited information about a trip, they are boring to share and longwinded to summarise (especially if you have more than one)

Testing the existing options

After completing our course, we crewed for other sailors to build our miles We tried to record our voyages on GPS devices (marine, cycling and smart watches) and exercise tracking apps (including Strava), however nothing was suited to recording long passages or the collaborative nature of sailing. It was also very difficult to share data from the hardware. The last straw came in Greece, our first charter holiday sailing around the Ionian Islands. All we had to show for it was an uninspiring entry in our log books ��: We decided to fix these problems ourselves and started working on SailTies as soon as we arrived home in Bristol!

Our overall goal is to create a product that solves real problems for fellow sailors, that they love to use and will therefore share with sailing friends At the start of our journey we agreed on four aspects of the product we wouldn't compromise on We call them our '4 anchors' (Disclaimer: This isn't named after how we moor up at sea)

1. Easy to capture everything in one place

SailTies makes it easy to capture all of the important elements of your sailing experience together GPS track, stats, crew list, log commentary, photos it's all on the voyage record with a beautiful map.

2. Collaborative

More often than not, you will be sailing with crew. With SailTies only one person needs to record the voyage and they can tag the other crew to let them contribute photos and notes. Collaboration is not only more fun, but makes it much easier to capture a rich memory of the voyage.

3. Fun to share your experience

Always Wear Your Kill Cord in the Dinghy!

Very telling safety story from the Boston Station of the CCA:

This is a true story relayed to me by a friend in Pulpit Harbor, ME. The author is an experienced sailor and mountaineer and had just returned from a successful trip to the summit of Mt. Everest.

“ I hopped into our motor dinghy and headed out to the boat to do some routine chores. Once completed, I got back in the dinghy and headed back to the dock.

It was low tide I needed to navigate shallow water to get to my usual tie up spot I did what I frequently do in this situation, turning around to lift the idling motor into the shallow water setting. The new motor we bought this year doesn’t raise and lower quite as easily as our old one did, so I had to jiggle the motor to get it to lock into position. As I did this, the motor tiller brushed the side of the dinghy and jerked into full throttle. The dinghy surged forward, then swerved violently to starboard. I was thrown from the dinghy into the shallow water.

Outboard motors are sold with “kill switches”. These are rubber lanyards intended to be worn around the operator’s wrist, with the other end connected to a switch on the motor. If the operator is inadvertently thrown into the water, the lanyard pulls the switch and immediately shuts off the motor

These kill switches are designed to avoid one of the most dangerous situations in motor boating. If an operator is thrown overboard with the motor running, the motor jerks immediately to one side and causes the boat to start spiraling in circles. It is almost impossible for a person in the water to get out of the path of an oncoming motor boat, and the rapidly rotating propeller can easily shred human bodies. This situation is widely known as “the circle of death”. However, few boat operators bother to actually use kill switch lanyards. The lanyards are mildly cumbersome and the risk of accident is low. Unfortunately, I was not wearing a lanyard.

I now faced the circle of death I stood up in waist deep water, turned, and saw the dinghy coming straight at me, full throttle. In the seconds available, I had two clear thoughts: “this may be it”, and “I must get as low as I can”. The water was shallow and the dinghy was almost on top of me. I submerged as much as possible, my back on the ocean floor. The dinghy passed over me, motor screaming, circling hard to the right as it did.

I resurfaced, trying to assess how badly I was hurt, and realized I had to get out of the way of the dinghy’s next pass I grabbed onto another boat tied to the dock and held it to me as a shield. Eventually the circling dinghy ran itself onto the rocky beach. My legs were bleeding profusely in multiple places.

It feels a miracle that I escaped serious injury or death. The propellor blades passed over my right thigh, making five parallel cuts. But the propellor was just high enough, and I was just deep enough, that the cuts are shallow. One blade cut more deeply on my left knee, but the cut was clean. As the doctor who stitched me up said, “you are incredibly lucky you aren’t in surgery right now, with us trying to save severed muscles or limbs, or worse”. If the dinghy hadn’t turned exactly when it did, the blades would have hit me in the face.

My cuts will heal in a couple of weeks. For now, the bigger problem is contusions in my legs, caused by the propellor shaft and metal boat bottom slamming into them.

Walking is a real challenge. This too should heal soon. I am beyond fortunate. This really spooked me. It was an incredibly close call. Nothing I have encountered in the mountains compares.

I pride myself in carefully managing risk, in the mountains and on the water. I have spent a lifetime doing so. But I lapsed, and almost paid a severe price. It is a fine line we all tread, often not realizing it.

Friends, wear those lanyards, or seatbelts, or whatever And let us be grateful for every moment we get to inhabit this good earth.”
